Not how I was expecting it to go.

Inez’s mission is finally revealed and it’s up to Archie and Inez to save an entire world from falling in the hands of the SubMerged.

It starts out with a festival of sorts as the people gather to witness the titular vote. People are excited and looking for some entertainment while waiting for the vote that decides the future of the entire realm. While there is tension to be felt from the start, the atmosphere is actually quite relaxed at first. It’s a nice little break from the blistering pace we’ve enjoyed so far. Instead focusing more on characters, world building and laying the groundwork for the big finale. It’s a nice reminder that the fast-paced action and adventure are but the icing on the cake in this little gem of a trilogy.

The first real break from the relaxed mood comes with a game of grop, a new sport the writer invented for this world, which is not only charming but also adds to the fun. While there are no stakes in this game, when Merged face the SubMerged head-on in the game, all the eyes are glued to the spectacle at hand. It’s a nice way of showing instead of telling us the stakes are high, while still keeping the readers mostly in the dark, leaving us eagerly grasping for clues. From there, the tension steadily rises until we get to the end. I didn’t really know where this was all going, but everything is nicely wrapped up in the end to conclude the trilogy, while hinting a new chapter in the series is already waiting for us.

I pretty much binged this short trilogy in a few days and found it very easy to race through the pages and quite entertaining from start to finish. Would definitely recommend.

I feel like I took my time reading this book for some reason, I did really enjoy it but it felt like not much action actually happened in this book compared to the first 2 if that makes sense. I enjoyed this book the most though out of them so far so the lack of action doesn’t really effect the rating much enough to drop it down a star.

In this book we discover the true reason for Inez needing to get to the royals before the vote which sort of sums up the whole book. But along the way we face some serious challenges and some knocked confidence from Archie and Inez. Their friendship within this book is still developing but from certain events you can tell that they are going to stay friends for a while no matter what. This is the main thing that I like about this book because they started off as strangers and they have developed to now be best friends who would not leave the other even if their lives were in serious danger.

There isn’t really much else to say about this book because it is quite short and the details I’d love to mention are the main parts within the book so it would be a serious spoiler. But if you have enjoyed the first 2 books so far then you will definitely enjoy this book for sure.

I really enjoyed the aspects of the rats within the book I felt like their part was very fitting within that sort of time that it is based in. The main bits of action within his a book are well described and very enjoyable, they are also the main bits where you find the most character development, hence why I can’t really mention them or discuss what happens within them.

I can’t remember what the name of that sort of football was called thinking it was something like goof or goob or something. I would have to check it up but either way the game seemed interesting, violent and a bit confusing because there was so many rules. I did enjoy though that Darren tried to include these rules so you could grasp the idea of the game, I wonder if this is based on an actual sport or something, I was getting rugby vibes while reading about the book.

Yep, binged this series over the weekend. I'm in denial that I have to return to the real world now. I don't want to, I want to keep living in Archies world and go on adventures with him!

I cannot wait for the next installment, but that's because I don't want to leave this world. I really like that there's not a massive cliff-hanger at the end, just more then enough to keep you interested..

I love how each volume is a whole story of itself, but it makes this whole world of stories and adventures possible in the Merge.

I find that I cannot put into words how much I love this story and why exactly, besides that it is just SO GOOD. Please go, read and find out for yourself ;)

Darren Shan has been one of my most favorite authors since childhood. I was excited to start this new series. And I completed all the 3 books of this first volume within 4 days!
The action starts right away. His writing is very simple, yet unique. You start liking the characters immediately. You’re introduced to an interesting world and a plot that hooks you.
The first book is free on Kindle (I’m not sure for how long). There are 2 other books that make up this volume.
For those of you who wish to try out his other books, read the Cirque du Freak and the Demonata series. They’re absolutely amazing! The world, the characters and the magic - you’d love them! I grew up with these books alongside Harry Potter and a couple of other series, back during school.
Waiting for the next volume!

Why must this be over for now. I didn’t want to leave the world of the merged. I loved the adventures of Archie and Inez. I request volume 2 now!!! Actually I don’t cause I want the best story that Mr. Shan can possibly write! I’ve been reading Darren Shan books since I was a child at age 11. I’m 29 now and still loving everything he puts out. Thank you Mr. Shan for making me love reading like I do.

I really liked the addition of the rats/free kids in the merge.
What made me like the book a little less was the ‘grop’ sport that was introduced. It was kind of hard to follow the explanation and it kind of reminded me of quidditch.

I absolutely don’t ship Archibald and Inez, but I have a feeling they will end up together anyways...
Also I’m still waiting for the explanation why Archie acts like a merged, by being a locksmith, but is still alive?

In conclusion, I will probably continue the series because I’m too curious.

Part three : Archie faces the most perilous part of the journey yet. And that's saying something Have thoroughly enjoyed watching the growth of all the characters. Everything ties neatly together in the end. Has a wonderful twist that I wasn't expecting. All in all a great finale.

A good conclusion of the small trilogy that makes Volume 1 of the Lox series.

Definitely different than say his other works, like the deliciously demented Demonata, or the vampiric Cirque du Freak known as Saga of Darren Shan. Or even the visceral Zom B.

This is a trilogy of story adventures that opens with tragedy and ends with a more hopeful tone which is very different than his normal works.
I'm not spoiling anything even with that statement.
It's a very different pie to process, and I gave myself a few days to think of what to say for this review.

There were a couple moments that I wish he went a bit further in a darker direction, but I think he wanted this one to be more cerebral in terms of story and to be more akin to a lighter Demonata, since like Grubbs and chess, Archie is a locksmith.

If you like his zany touches and cosmic weirdness, this one is definitely for you.
Bring some mushrooms on the way and make sure to befriend a Rat.

This final book of the first volume wraps up the story nicely. Inez' mission comes to a head and Archie proves to be a key part of that (quite literally in this case!). The book lets us spend time in another realm and on the whole the action is more muted, allowing time for the characters to interact and for Archie to learn more about the new universe he finds himself in.

There's plenty of great ideas here, including Shan inventing a new sport which is a lot of fun and then a truly epic journey to reach the place where the final confrontation takes place. The truth of Inez' mission makes for a great reveal and it works well because it's no real surprise to anyone but Archie because he's new to this world. The development of the relationship between Archie and Inez is really important to this book too and it's great that there's some good character stuff alongside the fantasy ideas.

I was pleased that the volume is a complete story and it ends without a cliffhanger. Archibald Lox will return and there's clearly much, much more to be explored but an overall series arc has yet to develop. I look forward to volume 2 and to seeing where the series will go.

I definitely enjoyed this book the most of the 3. I didn't expect everything to be able to conclude in the last book but some how it was pulled off.

It was a little slow to begin with as the mission was coming close to the end. I think I found myself enjoying it more when the game of Grop begun. More books need new fictional games, I enjoy learning the rules and seeing what comes of it.

I'm sad to say there is a sad death in this book of a character only introduced in this book and there was a near miss of a beloved character.

This book finally shows us what on earth Inez means by being a camel and I loved the reason, it should have been something to guess by the name but at the same time so unexpected 😅.

Throughout the book Archie is very sure of Inez secret just for him t publicly embarrass himself by being wrong. However he had the same assumption as I did so I'm glad again the unexpected happened.

Plenty of twists in this series. It's a joy to read

A fitting conclusion to the end of the first trilogy of this series, this is fun, exciting and intriguing.

Another great book by Shan! Since this is book 3 of his newest series, I will not write a review until more people have had a chance to read it. I've been reading his Darren Dash books, but it's great to have Shan back in YA.

What an amazing ending to the first volume! Initially, I thought it was a bit bumpy in the beginning. The story starts off slowly where the previous book ended, but not much happens in the first few chapters. However, it becomes a roller-coaster ride once we read about Grop! From then, the story is back on track and does not disappoint.

Also, I loved Pol and the other vine rats and wanted to see more of them. Archie and Inez share an amazing bond. The adventures they go through to get to the Cuckoo’s Nest was amazing! There are quite a few twists and turns (literally) they encounter that you don’t expect. Moreover, I was so happy that the author did not complicate their friendship and turn it into a romance.

There are still a few open ended questions like how Archie got his skills, and what happens to some of the characters. But overall, this was very satisfying conclusion to the series.

Great ending to the Archibald Lox story! I enjoyed this book even more than the first two. Darren Shan does a great job in continuing to build up a new universe, by adding more details. There's a new sport that you get introduced to, new characters in the Merge and more details about the people you already met.

What a fantastic journey that was!

From the first page of book one to the last of book 3 I was gripped by Archie, Inez even Cal and more.

I have so so many questions and I'm really hoping that's not the last we will see of Archie and the Merge because I'm dying to know so much more.

Its a fantastic fantasy shift for Darren and as always his finest work.

Book three in the Archibald Lox series was a welcome addition to what is shaping up to be a fantastical series that I know will stay with me long after I read its last words. In every book that follows on from the last, I fall in love with Archie a little more. Archie is by no means the bravest kid in the book. He makes mistakes, he gets scared when things get tough. But he’s a smart kid with a big heart, and it’s all these things combined that, in my opinion, make him so endearing. Archibald Lox is the loyal, spunky companion to the mysterious Inez. Even though they're pretty much chalk and cheese, they make a great team, and they bounce off each other in satisfying ways that both made me laugh and warmed my heart. I'm looking forward to the future installments!

As expected from the "ex" master of horror, another amazing book to tie up the first volume.

The third installment of the first volume left me feeling satisfied yet eager to read on all at once, with an amazing ending with no cliff hanger meaning the saga can continue or cease to continue means a clean end.

Archie and Inez complete their mission, with new friends and new enemies in their lives.

As an avid Shanster I thoroughly enjoyed the volume and desperately cannot wait to begin the second. With friendship, violence and adventure this fantasy should definitely be on your 'to read' pile.

A short time ago, Archie Lox was a normal boy living in London. That all changed when he saw a young girl, Inez, being chased by assassins and he followed her into the Merge. The Merge is an alternative dimension full of danger, peril and the aforementioned axe-and-knife-wielding murderers. It is also where Archie learns that he is a locksmith of rare, considerable talent and that he might be the one to unlock the most complicated lock of all.

Following the introduction to the wonderful world of the Merge in Darren Shan's Archibald Lox and the Bridge Between Worlds and their incredible victory in Archibald Lox and the Empress of Suanpan , Archie's adventures continue in Archibald Lox and the Vote of Alignment.

Archie, Inez and the band of thespians travel to Cornan, the capital of the Sapphire realm. There they will put on the performance of their lives, both on stage and during the Vote of Alignment. The whole safety of the Merge rests of their shoulders and Archie will learn just how important his role is. He'll also get to play a game or two of grop - an extravagant combination of basketball, football and utter mayhem - while eluding those pesky assassins. He may or may not succeed in either endeavour.

I thoroughly enjoyed the festival atmosphere of Cornan, with its intrigues and drama, atmosphere and performances. Archibald Lox and the Vote of Alignment truly transports the reader away to a different place, far, far away from the real world. I was also completely unprepared for that reveal at the end!

The Archibald Lox series is exactly what the world needs right now. It is inventive, magical and fantastical, terrifically readable and a lot of fun. All the books in the series are short, recommended for even the most reluctant readers, while those who prefer more hefty tomes can binge the full trilogy in one volume. The best thing about coming to the end of The Missing Princess trilogy? This is only volume one and the next book in the series, Archibald Lox and the Forgotten Crypt will be released on 1 July 2021.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy and give Archibald Lox and the Vote of Alignment a superb five out of five stars. Highly recommended for fans of superior middle grade fantasy fiction.

Note: This is a review on the overall first Volume of the Archibald Lox series.

It's been a really long time since I read a Darren Shan YA book. After the hugely successful Zom-B series, where Mr. Shan explored a lot of social commentary while maintaining an action-packed and exciting story throughout 12 novels (Read it, I promise you won't regret it), I just had to delve back into his worlds. I grew up reading the Saga of Darren Shan, the Demonata series, and everything else Mr. Shan has written.

And so, I am very grateful that Mr. Shan reached out to me with review copies his new series in exchange of an honest review.

The reason why I am reviewing the whole volume as one is precisely because of how the books are structured. The first three books make up one overall story arc in the following order:

1. Archibald Lox and the Bridge Between Worlds (3.5/5)
2. Archibald Lox and the Empress of Suanpan (3/5)
3. Archibald Lox and the Vote of Alignment (4/5)

As usual, Mr. Shan has a creative grasp on character names. Archibald Lox, if you haven't guessed, is a locksmith, and his power allows him to open doors to different worlds and travel. He is accompanied by Inez, and together they go on many different adventures in different parts of the world, and I mean a diverse set of locations like UK, Dubai, and more.

It took me a bit of time to get fully immersed into the world, because there was a lot of exposition in the first book, but I did like the cast of characters a lot. I think that this series is Mr. Shan's Alice in Worlderland-esque effort. Because you get portals to different places, get ready for things to flip quickly, weird and quirky things happen all at once, and have some rules you were used to suddenly change.

I did enjoy the first book as an introduction, but the second book suffered a bit of a second book syndrome for me, and I was struggling to be invested in that particular aspect of the story. However, the third book redeemed itself with a very interesting plot twist.

Overall, this series feels different than Darren Shan's other children's books, and that's not a bad thing. Mr. Shan is always trying new things in his book and I appreciate that about him. I definitely can't wait to see what happens in the next volume, which I'll be reading very soon.

Overall volume rating: 3.5/5

I read the three books in the series and, in my estimation, it is a series for young people but it nonetheless was enjoyable, thus passing the test of a good book for young people...and I'm most definitely not one of that group.

I kept putting off reading this book for so long because I wanted to keep the story going as long as I could, but I had to do it anyway, I had to finish the book...

What should I say? I loved the book and volume 1 of Archibald Lox as a whole. The series may not be as gruesome as the Demonata series (so far, at least), but it is as interesting as Demonata and the CDF.
The whole idea of this new world created in the series is quite thrilling, you can never predict how it's going to be or what's going to happen.
This book sees the end of Inez's mission and it's pretty action-packed. I loved Cal even more than before, and I would protect Inez and Archie at all costs.

[Spoiler Warning]
And that ending ... I expected (and wanted) Archibald to stay in the Merge tbh, but he's obviously going to go back somehow in the future. I am also curious to know if he's going to stay in the Born for long or how he's going to explain everything.
Anyways, how am I supposed to wait a year for the next volume??

Archie and Inez's adventure continues.

4 stars - for serious adventure

The third book in the Archibald Lox series is filled with action, deceit and new characters.

Picking up from the end of book 2, Archie and Inez continue on Inez's mission. They must reach the capitol of Cornan in the Merge to sway the "vote of realignment". Two royals of the Submerged want to vote to alter the alignment of the realm from Merged to Submerged, which would lead to a more brutal and dictator- like realm. Only King Hugo is present in the realm to represent the Merged, as Princess Ghita has disappeared a year ago. The vote seems destined to alter the alignment of the realm.

But as Inez, Archie, Cal and the group of thesps journey to Cornan to shift the vote, they encounter many trials and dangerous encounters with unimaginable people, creatures and realms that attempt to thwart them from completing their quest.

Through exceptional world building and brilliant prose, the author guides the reader on a delightfully dangerous set of adventures before reaching the realm they seek. The witty reparté, particularly between Archie and Inez, only enhances the story. A game similar to Quidditch of the Harry Potter books is introduced and explained. A more brutal and violent game that involves flying, but no brooms.

In the final showdown between the three Royals, Inez discloses the secret she's been keeping since book one. But she requires Archie's locksmith talents to make it happen before the vote.

When Archie manages to master the specially built lock to reveal the contents behind its door, those in attendance in the Royal chamber are astonished!

The vote of realignment is called for immediately. But which realm will the vote allow to rule? Will the Merged be subjected to a crueler form of government? Or will the Submerged be defeated? What will become of Inez and Archie now that Inez has completed her mission? For answers to these and many other questions, you will have to read this compelling third story in the Archibald Lox series. It is rated mid-grade, but adults will enjoy it as well.
I sincerely look forward to book four.

This is a strong conclusion to the first trilogy of Archibald Lox stories. Longer than the first two books in the series, it still moves at a rapid pace, with plenty of action. We learn more about the characters, and more about the Merge, and the major storyline of the first trilogy is brought to a satisfying conclusion.
