Are you familiar with the case when you like the author and enjoy their writing, but you just don't click with the story?
That is what happened to me with One Thousand Stars and You.

I usually love Isabelle Broom's work. Ever since she started publishing her stories back in 2016 I fell in love with her writing and the way she would describe places her characters visited, and she found her spot on my favourite authors list.
Unfortunately, although I still enjoyed her descriptions of beautiful Sri Lanka, I didn't fall in love with this novel.

I think the main reason I was out off was the way one of her characters was presented to us, through other characters' (and what it felt like through author's too) eyes.
I am talking here about Moureen who was perfect the way she was, but for sone reason our MC and her love interest looked down upon her, like they are for some reason better then her.
Like MC was pure and inocent when in reality she was emotionally cheating on her boyfriend since the moment she met Max, and Max who for some reason acted like he deserves better then Maur.
It was just really hard to love the story with hard-to-like characters.

I also wasn't a fan how the novel reminded me of Me Before You in some parts and I am still not sure would I loved it better if it went all the way there or do I like it that it took a different turn.

In the end I appreciate the message behind this whole journey, and think that the book is good and would still recommend it.
I just wish I liked it little bit more.

Alice is travelling to Sri Lanka with her friends for a final hurrah. She leaves behind her boyfriend, Richard, a teacher, who wants to marry Alice. Whilst in Sri Lanka, Alice meets a man called Max, who lost a leg while fighting in Afghanistan. He has struggled to find friendship ans romance ever since. There is an instant connection between them, but Alice is in a realationship and Max is not looking for a woman. They are both trying to discover more about themselves.

I love Max's character for many different reasons but probably most for his struggles with his disability. I also know people like Alice, who struggle trying to please everybody around them. The way the author describes Sri Lanka is almost perfection, I think Sri Lanka has just been added to my bucket list due to this. I also liked the way Alice and Max's relationship was not rushed. A story of hope, learning to live again and emotional turmoil. Have the tissues handy.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Penguin UK - Michael Joseph and the author Isabelle Broom for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I would like to thank the publishers Penguin Random House, as well as the author Isabelle for inviting me to review One Thousand Stars and You via NetGalley!

Isabelle's novel My Map Of You was one of the first I ever reviewed as a book blogger. That was over two years ago and still remember it fondly. One Thousand Stars and You was a good read, with main character Alice (bonus points for using a character that has the same name as myself!) travelling with some of her friends to Sri Lanka and spend time away from her busy world back in England. She is leaving her boyfriend, a teacher called Richard, who plans to marry Alice. During the trip to Sri Lanka, Alice meets a man named Max, who lost his leg during fighting in Afghanistan and is struggling to find friendship and romance again in an ever-changing world. Their worlds collide in an instant and soon, Alice is left to make some very difficult decisions. Stay with Richard and forget about living thrilling adventures? Or remaining close to Max and travel the world together? This is most definitely not your typical romance novel. It was a visual and vibrant adventure, Isabelle's writing style is one I like a lot and can connect with easily as a reader. The pacing did move a little slow for me, but started to pick up again towards the end. There is a lot of tears, emotions and moving on from past events. This one however, is a release I would recommend to readers who love travelling with their characters and not leaving the comfort of your own home.

Isabelle Broom is my go-to girl for holiday romance. All her books have beautiful settings and intriguing stories. I'm totally hooked.

One thousand stars and you is a heart-warming story about love, life and loss. Alice has dated Richard for a long time. Their relationship and life have become predictable and safe. Alice had an accident when she was younger which left her with scars. Richard has always been dependable and a security net. He wants them to get married but for some reason, this idea doesn't fill Alice with the right kind of butterflies.

Alice and two of her friends are planning a trip for their 30th birthday. Sri Lanka is a beautiful place with adventure at the heart. It isn't a beach holiday it's mountains and site seeing. They meet two guys of similar age and the group make memories together.

Max is recovering from a loss in more than one way. When he meets Alice he knows she has a boyfriend but somehow she puts the spark back into his life. He wants to open her eyes to who she really is. A friendship forms and both find what they are looking for. Life isn't about settling. It's about living.

5 stars out of 5. This is a bittersweet story. It's happy but sad. To be true to yourself you need to let go.

Probably my favorite Isabelle Broom, they just keep getting better and better! loved it.

Alice really needs to visit wonderland to see everything she's been missing thanks to trying to please everyone else (her mum and Richard being the main two). Instead of wonderland though she heads to Sri-lanka.

With friends Steph and Maureen what could possibly go wrong? They went for a girl's holiday then meet Max and Jamal. From the start Jamal suits Steph while Max suits Alice.

It's great how Alice doesn't pity Max with his war injury and Max lets Alice live and be herself. It's like Alice has been leading a half life.

The descipritons of Sri-lanka are amazing and the safria trip sounded a little scary but that would be my favourite part seeing all the animals.

Back home I love the brothers Freddie (Alice's) and Ant (Max's). The end was so heart breaking.

I love the writing style and will be reading more of Isabelle Broom.

Words are failing me, this was amazing, it was beautifully written, and it is without a doubt Isabelle Broom's best book.

From the first pages I found myself enchanted by the story being told and just wanted to read it in one sitting but alas real life intervened.

Alice and Max are both on holiday in Sri Lanka when their paths cross. There is an instant connection between them but Alice is in a long term relationship, and Max isn't looking for women. In fact they are both trying to discover more about themselves after events in the past have re-defined their characters.

It is a story of self discovery in one respect but also if like me you are a fan of travel, it is a glorious trip through Sri Lanka taking in many different aspects of the country. It is clear the author must have enjoyed her research for the country and everything is described so vividly.

There is wildlife to be admired, sites to be explored, friendly owners of homestays to meet, there are the tuktuk journeys and other trips on public transport. There is the incredible descriptions of a sunrise from a stunning location and a whole lot more besides. For a country I've never really thought about there is more than enough detail to really feel as though you were there - especially when as I did reading this during a heatwave - I could even feel the heat and humidity.

I loved all the different characters in this, with the focus shifting occasionally from Alice to Max and getting to know him more intimately was great. I don't want to say too much about either of them but will say they are well rounded, full of depth and both are incredibly easy to love.

This is an absolutely stunning book that I can't do justice to, so will stop here and leave you with this. If you want a fabulous story to read, and possibly one of the best books of the year, then give this a try, and if you have read the author before stop thinking, and just purchase it and start reading. You will love this!

Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

This is an incredible, amazing and enthralling story which I absolutely loved from the very first pages, all the way to the ending. This is another of those rare books where my advice is grab yourself a copy and read the book rather than my review!

Alice was a really adventurous tomboy as a child but that was before she had an accident which left her with facial scars and an over protective mother. After that both she and her older brother were encouraged never to take risks and that behaviour was largely ingrained in her throughout her teens and twenties. She’s in a long term, very stable relationship but she arranges to go on an adventurous holiday to Sri Lanka with her two best friends so they’ll all celebrate their thirtieth birthday there together. It is there they meet up with two men who are participating in a similar adventurous holiday. Max is striving to prove he can cope after life changing injuries ended his army career.

As the two groups merge to explore the country together there are adventures to be had, relationships to develop and emotions to be explored. It is a lovely story of re-evaluating your life, making choices and being prepared to make changes to help achieve happiness - but only after some dramatic events and near disasters. I thoroughly enjoyed this whole book and the great range of characters in it. The author clearly knows the setting well and brought it to life within the pages of this story. I have no hesitation in highly recommending this to anyone who enjoys reading of someone taking stock of their life choices and being brave enough to make new choices because of love. It is an enthralling story, a keeper and one that will live on in my memory - one I look forward to re-reading in future, and I don’t do that for many books!

I requested and was given a copy of this book, via NetGalley. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.

Alice has a boyfriend who wants to settle down with her- but she decides to go away to celebrate her 30th birthday with her best friends. They travel to Sri Lanka , which is so beautifully described that you feel that you holidayed with them. You experience the friends they meet, the food and drink they try and the wonderful sightseeing expeditions they go on.
They want an authentic travelling holiday and we follow the trauma two of the characters have been through, romance and flirting alongside wonderful friendships that are tested but remain strong.
The last book I read by Isabelle Broom had me booking a trip to Prague next month and now I really want to travel to Sri Lanka! She has such a wonderful, warm writing style that draws you in and captures you until you have finished the story.

This was such a lovely book to read over the summer holidays! The writing is gorgeous, warm and heartfelt and it was a delight to be caught up in the world of these characters who were all searching for something on their travels.

The main character is Alice, about to settle down with Richard who offers stability, a safe future and everything Alice wants- or perhaps more truthfully, everything everyone around her wants for her. She's not quite prepared to accept that she feels a little trapped by her family and by Richard, but when there is a chance to travel with her best friends, she decides to take it. Why not have one last journey alone to feel free and do something full of adventure, risk and excitement? A trip to Sri Lanka is suddenly Alice's last chance to escape into the chaos, colour and heat of a country thousands of miles from home before she settles for a steady, predictable but comfortable life with Richard.

Sri Lanka is as much a character in this novel as Alice and the other people she meets along the way. I've never been there but it was so easy to picture it all through Broom's effective evocation and descriptions. The location gently emphasises the themes explored in the book and the reader is immediately transported, not only immersed in the sights, sounds, smells and sense of the place, but also feeling the release in Alice and the freedom offered by this country. It's a great way of highlighting the contrasts in Alice's life and the reader is caught up in Alice's emotional journey as much as her physical one.

Once there, Alice meet Max. The chapters alternate from Max to Alice and we find out that Max is also on a journey - physically and emotionally - as he tries to prove himself after a devastating injury that has left him changed in many ways. He is also in search of adventure, in need of escaping his over protective family, determined to find freedom and rediscover his identity through this trip.

Both characters are very well created and the reader connects with both of them. Over the course of the holiday, Max and Alice become close and through their time together begin to confront their fears, the things they are trying to run away from and then gradually begin to realise what it is they both really want from life.

To me this book felt very filmic and it was very easy to imagine the characters and all the scenes that take place. I was very happy to be transported away and watch the characters place themselves in challenging situations, make impulsive decisions and discover their inner strength. There's a great mixture of watching them all enjoy the company of old friends and make new ones. This is a group of young people on an adventurous holiday and in amongst the more serious issues, there is plenty of fun, humour and lightheartedness. Broom captures the dynamics between the friends with conviction and authenticity and she developed the emotional turmoil of both Max and Alice well, revealing their dilemmas, heart ache, fears and concerns as they both try to confront the real reasons they are on the trip.

There's heartbreak, there's drama, there's excitement, tension but ultimately this is a great love story with a truly heartwarming ending. Broom's writing is fluent, easy, polished and full of heart, understanding and insight about people and what it means to love. I really enjoyed it and found it the perfect holiday read.

When we’re first introduced to Alice you realise that at some point, things have to change. Who you really are can’t stay buried for the sole reason of pleasing those around you and despite Alice trying her hardest, when that tension gathers she has to do something about it in the most safest of ways possible. Parental expectations, duty and responsibility are often heavy and will always bring some degree of guilt … Celebrating a milestone birthday with friends Maureen and Steph in Sri Lanka gives Alice the outlet she needs (especially when Max is around).

The friendship between Max and Jamal is many layered, a friendship worth treasuring! Max is on a journey to independence and acceptance of who he is. Sometimes his determination and strength is a weakness as he hides his struggles. Such an inspirational character. I might just have fallen a little in love with him myself 🙂

I enjoyed the developing bond between Alice and Max. The confiding and understanding adds depth to the romantic spark. I enjoyed all the relationships between the characters as they journey around Sri Lanka, sharing experiences and a different way of life (the fun and the conflicts!). The settings felt very real, once again Isabelle Broom’s writing drawing me in so that I stepped into a scene and became a part of the group, experiencing the landscape and customs as they did.

As well as the romantic theme in One Thousand Stars and You, emotional health is an integral part of the story. Authentic and sensitively done, I expect you’ll feel it as much as I did.

One Thousand Stars and You is a story that shows how important it is to live fully – not only a small percentage of life because you’re so caught up in being what others want you to be. It’s about integrating all aspects of who we are, sharing the fear as well as the love. A recommended read from me.

Alice is coming up to 30 a birthday she shares within a few days of her best friends Maureen and Steph, and so they decide to celebrate it together by having a holiday in Sri Lanka. Richard, Alice's long term boyfriend, and her mother are not too happy as she had been wrapped in cotton wool since a childhood accident but she is desperate to escape from this stifling atmosphere and have an adventure.

Max is an army veteran with a prosthetic leg and PTSD, he had also been stifled by family and desperate to get away he goes on holiday with his best friend and physiotherapist Jamal, when they meet the girls on their first night instant rapports are made and they decided to journey together...... can Alice let her real self come out and enjoy the adventures and how much will she enjoy sharing them with Max?

A lovely book which was made great by the descriptions of Sri Lanka and definitely transported me back there. The main characters were interesting and I enjoyed watching their true characters emerge throughout the story.

Of course you want to make the people around you happy, but does it make you happy ...?

The author does not only take us on a beautiful trip through Sri Lanka, but also on a life changing one for every character in the book.

It certainly is about love. For some it's as simple as finally meeting the right person. For others it's a lot more complicated. It's about putting yourself first and not going on pretending. It's about being honest with yourself and the people around you.
If you love someone, you want to keep them close. But there is close and suffocating. Sometimes you need to loosen up on the reins just a little.

It's not a light-hearted and sunny holiday read. It's a story that makes you realize that sometimes a happy life is about making a u-turn, even if you have to hurt someone in the process.

A fluently written and emotional story.

Thank you, Isabelle Broom, Penguin and Netgalley

Alice always does her best to make everyone in her life happy. She doesn’t take risks and whilst she’d secretly love to throw caution to the wind she knows just how much her boyfriend Richard and her very protective mother worry about her.

However, Alice will turn thirty very soon and a trip to Sri Lanka with her two best friends is something that she cannot resist. Ignoring, for once, the protests of Richard and her mother, she sets off, determined to have one last adventure before settling down forever.

Max is also determined to shake off the image that he’s had since he suffered a devastating injury. He wants to re-discover the fearless Max that has been hiding behind his disability and a holiday in Sri Lanka with his good friend Jamal feels like the perfect way to prove himself.

When Alice and her friends meet up with Max and Jamal, there’s an instant spark, all of them recognise something in each other that seems to bind them together. Previous plans are abandoned and the five of them decide to spend their holiday together. They don’t just discover new and exciting places, they learn more about each other.

As Alice and Max grow closer, they find themselves opening up to each other; revealing more about themselves and their hidden inner selves than either of them have admitted in the past.

Isabelle Broom’s writing sweeps her readers away to a exotic destination, her sense of place and wonderfully evocative descriptions are beautifully done. One Thousand Stars and You is an irresistible love story, made up of an eclectic and loveable cast of characters. Unashamedly romantic and touching, reminding us all that love and relationships are never as easy as they seem.

If I could give this book 1000 stars I would

Honestly I fell in love with this book. It’s so beautifully moving with characters you can’t help but fall in love with and want the best for. Being set in Sri Lanka was such an eye-opener, I could relate it slightly to some travels I’ve been on but I’ve never experienced Sri Lanka (and now I’m desperate to!). It felt like I was there, experiencing the country with Alice and Max (who are two of the most relatable, loveable characters I’ve read about) and I was rooting for them all along!

The book is easy to read, a slow burn romance (which I usually hate) absolutely captivated me and I was even reading it with the parents watching TV (I can never usually read with the TV in the background!). I may have to invest in some more Isabelle Broom romance to magic me away again!

If this isn’t on your TBR pile make sure you add it!

This is a really light, sweet contemporary romance. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, but personally, it’s not quite to my taste. I like romances with some passion and want at least one steamy sex scene. There is a distinct lack of sex scenes, or even passionate kissing.

Lots of character developments, and the story is a slow burn. I was kind of ambivalent to the setting of Sri Lanka, and really wanted the romance between Max and Alice to be the focus. It kind of feels like a side plot. I think the issue is solely with me, and my particular taste in romances, then with the book. Despite that, it was a really engaging read and I flew through it, however I doubt it will stick in my mind for very long afterwards.

I thought this was a bit slow to get going, but towards the latter half it picked up - I enjoyed it more towards the end. I have to say that whilst I loved Max (the hero if you like), and Steph and Maur (Alice's friends), I wasn't overly keen on Alice herself, which was a problem being as she was the main female character. Whilst with Max I could understand his issues, I thought Alice was a tad melodramatic, and should have been able to stand up to her mother way before she turned 30. Max was lovely, just right, and the ending was done well too. Great descriptions of Sri Lanka. Overall, a good read.

I have a rather embarrassing confession to make. Although I have all of Isabelle’s books on my ever increasing ‘To Be Read’ mountain, ‘One Thousand Stars And You’ is the first book that I have actually read. Sorry Isabelle. However, going by how much I enjoyed ‘One Thousand Stars And You’, I can guarantee that the rest of her books won’t be on the TBR mountain for much longer. I absolutely and totally flipping well loved this book but more about that in a bit.
Alice is one of those characters that you can’t help but take to and think of her as a friend. I also felt rather protective of her. At the beginning of the book, Alice is very self conscious about a scar that she has on her face. She is convinced that people are talking about it behind her back but really they aren’t. To a degree I could empathise with her in that respect. I have a scar on my arm thanks to an accident I had as a 5 year old. I am convinced that people see it and talk about me behind my back when really they don’t. For a long time I tried to hide it and I would refuse to wear short sleeves but then decided that my scar was part of me and why should I keep it hidden? Sorry I digress so back to Alice I do go. Alice is in a relationship with Richard and it looks as though it could lead to wedding bells. At the beginning of the book Richard and Alice’s mother are desperately trying to put Alice off from travelling to Sri Lanka because they say that it is too dangerous for her. To be honest Richard irritated me a bit and he sounded rather boring . Alice is a bit of a stubborn devil though because once she has decided on something then you know that that is exactly what she is going to do. She travels to Sri Lanka with her two best friends and the trip is to celebrate their 30th birthday. Alice is a proper little tourist who swots up on anything and everything to do with the country to which she is travelling. Her friends gently pull her leg about her super organised travel research. Alice meets the lovely sounding Max, who is travelling with his best friend. It’s easy to understand why Alice and Max get on as well as they do because they are both of a similar nature. Both have suffered injuries that have left them with scarred both mentally and physically, both feel self conscious, both are gentle and kind souls and both sound rather easy going and easy to get along with. It soon becomes clear that there is more than one spark between Alice and Max. Will Alice and Max get together? What happens to Richard? Is there a twist to the tale? Well for the answers to those questions and more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out because I am not going to tell you.
Oh my giddy aunt this book is one hell of an emotional read, which had me smiling and wanting to cry in equal measure. The author’s writing style is such that you can’t fail to be drawn into the story from the first word on the first page. That’s what happened to me anyway. I found that I couldn’t put this book down. It wasn’t glued to my hand but it might as well have been. The writing, the story and the characters were so beautifully and sensitively written that I just had to keep reading. If I had to put the book down then I was counting down the time until I picked it up again. It’s fair to say that reading ‘One Thousand Stars And You’ became a serious addiction for me. I would pick the book up only intending to read a couple of chapters, only to realise after a couple of hours that I had read way in excess of a couple of chapters. It took me no time at all really to work my way through the book. I had mixed feelings when I finished reading this book. Don’t get me wrong I was pleased to finish the book because I knew how the story ended but I was sad to finish the book because I was enjoying reading it so much that I just wanted the book to continue. Reading this book certainly put me through the emotional wringer somewhat. As I mention towards the start of this review, ‘One Thousand Stars And You’ left me smiling and wanting to cry in equal measure.
In short, I absolutely adored reading ‘One Thousand Stars And You’. I would strongly recommend that you read this book. ‘One Thousand Stars And You’ is right up there on my top 5 reads of 2018 and Isabelle Broom is up there on my list of must read authors. I can’t wait to read what she comes up with next. Here’s hoping that I don’t have too long to wait but whilst I wait, I fully intend to read Isabelle’s other books. I’m looking forward to reading them. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board can be nothing less than 5* out of 5*.

One Thousand Stars and You is the first novel by Isabelle Broom that I've read and I really enjoyed it - I'm not one for really cheesy, over-the-top romance/ chick-lit (hate that word, sorry) but this managed to have a good dose of relationships, fun friendship and humour without being any of those offputting things...

The characters are great, and they're a big part of what makes this book so enjoyable. Alice is likeable and sweet, and though at times she can perhaps come across a little naive, she makes a great protagonist. Her friends Maureen and Steph are vibrant, entertaining characters (though Maureen got on my nerves sometimes!) and Max seems like a great guy - kind, fair and brave considering everything he's been through. It may be obvious from near the start that Max and Alice are going to hit it off, and there are various parts that are fairly predictable, but the story is lovely to read about anyway, so to me that doesn't matter!

The setting for this book completely sucked me in - I've always wanted to go to Sri Lanka and I felt like I could really picture their trip, from the bustling streets and vibrant colours - Isabelle Broom manages to bring this amazing place to life for the reader. Definitely gave me travel envy (yes, this is fiction but still...!)

I really enjoyed One Thousand Stars and You, and would recommend it to anyone who fancies a light, entertaining but also quite emotional read. It's touching, heartfelt and definitely has its funny moments!

Many thanks to Penguin for providing a copy of this book on which I chose to write an honest and unbiased review.

Isabelle Broom has a wonderful ability to transport the reader immediately to the setting of her stories. One Thousand Stars and You is set in Sri Lanka, the beautiful island that I was lucky enough to visit earlier this year and it was fun to revisit many places during the story. It was a little predictable but I liked the characters and the journey they went on both literally and personally.

Um livro que me fez viajar até ao Sri Lanka. Uma história que nos faz pensar na forma como estamos na Vida.
