2.5 🌟 the adventure, mystery and fantasy world building could not save my growing dislike for the heroine over the series.
She's passionate and... let's go with 'brave'. But she doesn't think. I don't know how to take her seriously or find her admirable. And she's supposed to be so powerful, with three types of magic and whatever blessings and whatever else, yet you don't really see that in action of the story. She doesn't often fight or fight back, despite how vehemently she may speak about kicking someone's ass or killing them. The scene where she finally fights Eva felt oddly dragged out (and the h wanted a "fair fight" I have no idea). And then the battle is just over (someone else does something), but she's having to fight herself (kind of) to not be consumed by a powerful magic that she borrowed.
I'm all for heroines who lean on and accept support and help from others, especially those who love them. In this book, other characters are stating how brave, badass, amazing, and powerful she is, but as a reader I did not feel like I witnessed that.
I get her being naive in book 1. The way she was raised, etc. She only had the opportunity to learn so much, and she thought that she was a human turned Shadowborn. Book 2 highlights a bunch of what she doesn't know, particularly of the Fae people, kingdoms, lands, history. But never an indication of her seeking knowledge or to understand what she doesn't know. Despite proclaiming that she'll be a future queen and ruler of these lands. She admittedly never has a plan or a clue what she is doing. But she also doesn't seek experience or advice from others. I ended book 2 rating her as TSTL. There was no growth or development for her IMO (or really any of the characters, sadly). So, in book 3, she is still stupidly (bravely?) running into danger, getting beat up by the same pair from book 2, does not physically or magically fight to prevent Eva's evil plot, and then a bunch of times where someone is saving her or her mates so they get HEA at the end.
