This was a short, and a rather disappointing light novel. I found this while looking for other manga's to read, and due to the adorable front cover, I thought I'd give it a go. Unfortunately, it became rather apparent early on, that I shouldn't have bothered with this.

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn't this. The plot was weak, involving skeletal developed characters, and a seemingly overuse of certain words. For example, somebody felt nauseated in one chapter, and the author felt the need to drum it into by repeating that fact six times or more. It irritated the hell out of me, and it was completely pointless on building the story.

There was some artwork involved in this, and that I did appreciate, but in my opinion, there just wasn't enough of it. I probably won't be continuing with this series at this stage.

A cute, mostly harmless fantasy story that's content to be what it is and doesn't aspire to be anything more. Every now and then it's nice to read something that's easy on the complexity.

I could probably count it on one hand how many light novels I have read in my life. I don’t really care for them unless it is related to some anime or manga where I already like the characters or the plot. I spotted this one among the Kindle unlimited free titles and since it had a super cute cover, an interesting plot and promised a wholesome friendship between a teacher-turned-magical-cat and a student at a magical academy I gave it a try on a whim. I won’t lie, the cat part won me over.

There are a few illustrations in between the chapters, and of course the cover which is absolutely gorgeous! I love the design for Lesti and Astria!

I found this to be a quick and nice read, though I feel like another round of editing could have been used, I spotted a few grammatical mistakes which is never fun in a published work. I got way more into this than I expected. I liked that the chapters weren’t super long and we always learned something new about the world or the characters. I found the closure of the book heartwarming and I look forward for more adventures in this world. I can’t wait to see more of the world and how Lesti challanges her fate! We even had a very anime magical fight towards the end that was really well paced!

The novel is from our modern time teacher’s point of view, I honestly don’t remember if her name was mentioned in the early chapters and well after that, it doesn’t really matter. I really like her way of thinking, and her way of adapting to new situations. I do wish some things were more fleshed out though, she briefly mentions loved ones, family and friends but these are never specific so we don’t really learn all that much about her personal life. In fact, the most we see of her regular boring human life is only her job and her after-work job related duties. And if teaching was her life, I would have loved to see it in the way she talks to people and solves problems. Like with all professions, a certain skillset gets developed over time, as a teacher I would imagine she is good at reading and handling children, even disciplining them. I didn’t feel like this was used for her advantage when she was dealing with Lesti or her classmates. And I would think she would have at least a basic knowledge on sciences, which she could have used creatively in a completely new setting. And I do hope that in the future she gets to bond with people where she isn’t just thinking about helping Lesti - I really liked her scenes with Lania, and I feel like the two could bond a lot about both being teachers.

Lesti was another great character! She was a bit brash but very hard working and always stood up for herself. I hope we could see her in some more downtime, when she isn’t focused in studying or fighting.

Lani was sweet and I found it funny that she took on the role of the teacher and the one trying to rein in the others from causing trouble, even when it came to our former teacher of modern times. I wish we had more scenes to learn about her. I really liked to read about her past and about her bond with Lesti.

I appreciated that the author developed the world in detail, and even made their own rules about how magic and magic spells are used in this world. At first it was a bit strange to read about instruction based magic, it sounded a lot like writing codes in a programming language. But once it was used in practice- without having to repeat those long winded sentences- it became fun. And it was a fun trick that there was an in-world reason why the first book is limited to the school only, this allowed the writer to introduce the school and characters first before having to deal with too much word building at once. And book two promises to venture a bit further out of school grounds which sounds fun!

Overall I went in with zero expectations and ended up having a lot of fun with these characters. A lot of the things that came up as questions in my mind were answered, so I felt like a lot of work was put into the writing. For a light novel this was very enjoyable, and if some more depth and backstory was given to the characters I could see this series become a great novel in it’s own.

I am curious about the next volume, and I do have some questions remaining -

I really enjoyed the shift in perspective of seeing the story told from the view of the familiar. I also enjoyed the description of how magic works in this world and how it is used during battle. While I was a little slow in reading the first half, by the second I could not put it down and finished it in one sitting. While I have not really connected to the girl to whom the familiar is working with, I am eager to see how their relationship grows in the next volume and to learn more about this world.

Moving from the story to the writing quality, I like the style the author uses. The sentences flow nicely and with the exception of a couple of minor sports, the book is well edited. I’ve definitely seen books from large press have far more issues, and, being a writer myself, am overly picky at times. Overall, it is clear the author has put a lot of effort into his work.

Finally, a shout out to the artist. There are only a few images, but they are well draw and fit into the story nicely. Hopefully, their collaboration will continue.

First thoughts: I totally enjoyed this first volume of this debut series by D.S. Craig. The writing was well done with only a bit of editing needed to trim some spots. I loved the concept and was so glad the familiar was a cat. I would ,like to see more personality development for Lesti and find out more about the relationship with Lani and their home territory. I would definitely love to see more of the delightful artwork by Yura. I would have loved to see Astria with Skeff! The style is charming and adds so much to the experience of the book. I am looking forward to more in this series by these two. I would also be interested in seeing it in print format with color artwork. Highly recommended.

I read isekai and reincarnation light novels and such nearly exclusively now, and was happy to come across this one. 10/10 recommend this to anyone who enjoys these genres.

But my review is missing a star, and it’s NOT because of the story itself. This part is more for the author or the highly picky/critical, and not those who just read this stuff for fun. The writing overall seems like it needed one more edit. Sentence length felt a tad repetitive and commas felt a bit overused. The writing was done really well overall, but there was a lot of hand holding with inner thoughts and plot development. That could be just to how much isekai stuff I read, though, to be honest.

My last critique is that while i enjoyed the characters, they didn’t feel all that well fleshed out. Lesti’s nature seemed to change, and I couldn’t figure out what exactly her personality was. The same goes for Astria, though to a lesser degree. It didn’t take away from the story at all, it’s just something to note. I 100% plan to follow this series, and I would definitely put this on my shelf if it were offered in print.

A fun new take on an Isekai

This was a really fun read that I devoured within a couple of days. It's pretty easy going and somewhat simple but it was just what I needed to fill the gap between the LitRPGs I like so much. Luckily for me the stats in a LitRPG where ever only secondary because this had none of that.

The story follows a young teacher who ends up dying and ended up reincarnated as a familiar cat in a magical world. Although she started out a little bit more clueless and disoriented then I think is actually realistic, she quickly overcame much of that and became a solid character and of her own right.

Lesti, who she was bound to, still has some young and perhaps spoiled girl aspects to her that drive her to challenge the other kids in her class a bit more than necessary, for which Astria (the cat) chides her about, but that's totally believable for a kid her age.

Her whole drive to summon Astria is powered by a desperation to get stronger. Strong enough to defy the social conventions of their world which will force her to marry to a womanizing arrogant fool for political reasons. Her parents, having died in a war, can't help her and she's been all alone. To make matters worse, she's not very good and sits near the bottom of the class.

Astria takes it upon herself to help even though she knows nothing of magic or even about being a familiar astral cat.

But that is not easy with her classmates berating and antagonizing Lesti at every opportunity.

This is a story about a little girl becoming a woman and a teacher finally connecting with a child enough to truly make a difference in a life and all the lives they themselves touch.

I certainly recommend reading, as I will be reading the rest of the series and keeping tabs on it for following installments.

A good introduction to a promising series

I've always been fascinated with the idea of a familiar, but I'd never watched or read anything that went into much depth about them, these stories instead choosing to focus on the familiar's master.

With that in mind, I was sold on this concept by the title alone... and even more fitting is that the familiar's past life was that of a modern day school teacher! A familiar full of their own life experience and skills as a mentor rather than just a construct of magic!!

But I digress... this was a fun story that hits all the beats and keeps you from putting it down. Craig gives us just enough introduction into our protagonist's life as a human before shifting gears into the fantasy and magic. After our familiar gets summoned, there's a little bit of exposition that needs to be dealt with, so don't be discouraged if you feel the pace start to slow... I promise it picks right back up as you get past the introductions.

Craig has boiled down this world's magic system into something that is sort of like a logic puzzle... a system with basic fundamentals, but also limitless in its complexity. It's fascinating to read the characters work through this system (and to me is far more engaging than someone chanting made up Latin words while waving a wand)! All that, combined with plenty of cleanly written action scenes and warm characters makes this both an exhilarating and heartfelt story.

I know Craig is already working on the next volume, but this story is a nice and neat little package that won't leave you dissatisfied. At the same time, there's a lot of questions left unanswered that I hope to see answered in the next volume.

I bought the book as soon as I saw it I was really looking forward to the story. What a disappointment.
Lesti and Astria.

She transmigrated as a cat but isn't shocked at all. I mean reincarnation/transmigration as a human in another world is shocking but a cat?
She is supposed to be a teacher with a degree that spreads knowledge but all she does is just throw tantrums and put herself in bad situations. She has the logic of a 5 year old and the conversations she has with Lesti her Contractor are just flat boring and cringe.
Lesti ...oh my god... where to begin. She is one of the most predicable characters with a "I can do anything" mindset but with 0 talent. The moment she gained a little power she flaunts it around and just makes trouble for everyone around her. And the thing that made her character even more unbearable was the Narrator. Her attempts to sound like a little girl just made my ears hurt. The other characters she narrated were ok.

Flat, predictable, Not that entertaining.

It was an entertaining if a bit short (2100 locations) story about a once young human teacher and now astral cat familiar of a struggling mage student.

The characters were likeable with some good action. The story had more focus then most Japanese light novels, although it is very much a start of a longer story.

I found the MC's behaviour a bit too silly and inconsistent for a former adult human at times. The world and magic system are too unknown to say much about, but I am getting a bit fed up with how nobility is depicted in these kind of novels - as a universal evil uncaring bunch of jerks.

Still, I enjoyed reading the book and l am curious about the next part.

Cat Familiar learns to be a cat familiar

It's okay. A decent quick read. the absence of plot really hurts the story. It's more of a series of events than a well constructed narrative. The author also misses out on the concept of being turned into a magical cat. It comes off as a human who happens to have a cat body than a human who has turned into a cat if you get my drift. It's a light novel so it's made to be read in brief lapses in your days. I understand that it's not really meant to have a plot, but it would help. Feels like I'm reading a journal entry or travel blog more so than a novel.

Well written story

I really enjoyed reading this story about a a human teacher who finds herself reborn as a familiar in her next life. Her role there is to be a companion to an overachieving young magic student. I couldn’t put it down; I just had to finish it before allowing myself to get some sleep.

As a Christian, I’m leery of stories that involve witchcraft. This one leans more on fantasy. Their magic is renewed through eating and rest.

There is little or no profanity and the book is clean enough for any age, keeping in mind that there is magic and sparks and such.

Our protagonist dies suddenly and wakes up as a cat familiar in a world with magic. I just needed something to pass time during a power outage.

It has parts that should be interesting in theory, like the magic training arc and the demon fight, but actually reading them was boring.

I'm not sure if the dialogues are formatted badly or if everyone just sounds the same, it's hard to tell who is speaking most of the time. For being an ex teacher the way Astria speak to others is quite informal, most adults seemed to act a bit childish though.

Adventures of a cat familiar.

A lovely story, not hugely long but filled with some lightly by humour. A woman becomes a summoned cat and has to deal with her new life, the crazy kid she's attached to and a while lot more. Lots of nice world building, that's not info dumped, but occurs naturally as the story builds.
Magic and cats and dragons! Oh my!
I hope there's more to come. X

An elementary school teacher has an accident in which she seems to die. She wakes up but in the body of a cat and the cat is a familiar to a young girl who is not very good at magic. Now she has to adjust being in the body of a cat, everything being taller than her and having to deal with a world where magic is real.

It's a very different approach to magical girl books and I think it works out pretty well.

I never read a Isekai story before, but if this is a typical story, I might give more a try. I am a sucker for any book with cats, if I see cats figure in the plot I will most likely try it. I liked the story enough, but the part that bothered me was how her accident and the life (or death?)'she left behind was never mentioned again really. I thought there might be a flashback to wrap up that last life. There are a lot of sequels I intend to follow, I will add this book to my sequel list.

Lighthearted friendship story

The plot is solid and the world building is strong. There could be more character development, but I haven't read the second volume yet so that may be addressed in the future. There are a couple action scenes which I felt were very well-done, too. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an isekai story with minimal stress/suspense.

She's a 21st century teacher transferred to a medieval society, but she did not even use modern knowledge to her advantage WTF
The simplest example. It is to neutralize fireballs by removing oxygen from the environment
and also how dose She has less knowledge about Programming than people who have not even discovered electricity

Fun, cute, heartwarming, intense!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! I am shocked by how good this was! I love all our heroes in this story. The relationship between the two protagonists is so sweet. When things started heating up in the story, I couldn’t put it down! The action was also easy to follow and exciting! One of the best light novels I’ve read so far!

The title at first had me rolling my eyes, but once I started I could not stop. Reincarnated as a familiar is a fun and interesting twist on the reincarnated sub genre. I look forward to the next in the series.

Interesting premise

Started this since the premise sounded interesting in terms of isekai plots and thought it might be fun. Female main characters in a magic school setting summoned thoughts of friendship shenanigans akin to Little Witch Academia or Tweeny Witches. What you get is a mesh of real-time hard magic system explanations and some fun, but pretty by-the-numbers character stereotypes. I had also hoped to see a bit more fun and exploration (after the initial shock wore off) of being reborn in a summoned magical cat body with my human soul and memories intact, but this fell a bit short for me. Hopefully things get a lot less expository now that the world is set up and we can see more characterizations in the next volumes, but while the story meets all the criteria for a story in the genre, it doesn’t really break any new ground.

The only real problem I had with the novel was that the length was pretty short. But the storyline and character development was solid so I look forward to the rest of the series.

Highly entertaining

A teacher comes back as a cat and helps a really mature teen win at life. At times the MC is more like a child than the child she guides. However the story is fun and fast paced. I was riveted. Enjoy

It is very predictable but amusing.

This would be great for young readers or for anyone that just wants something that doesn't require much thought.

It was an origins story, very short, but it sets the stage for future books with a lot of open threads to tug on.

The story was ok. Characters are fun. Unfortunately even though Lesti is one of the main characters, I can't seem to care for her.

I was hoping the top boy would be nice for Lesti, but he seems to be average too.

Fun start

This story has a good balance of character development, world building, plot pacing, and humor. The action scenes are well written and the magic system well thought out. I look forward to reading more of Lesti and Astria's story.
