No woman has ever piloted a chimera, the legendary mechas that once served to defend Earth from the alien invasion that nearly destroyed us all. No one... until me.
Once, I was a normal girl. Much to my mother's dismay, I didn't have any magic, but that was all right. Not every girl carried Gaia's Gift. There were other things I could do to prove myself, even if I couldn't heal the earth. I could simply live a normal life—something which should always be treasured.
Maybe I'd have done exactly that had I not stumbled into the mysterious Sphinx, one the most dangerous metallic guardians in the world, considered impossible to pilot even by the most skilled Tamers.
As it turns out, that wasn't exactly true. I have a natural talent for being a Tamer, a pilot for the elite unit of Chimera Warriors, and I'm the only one who can pilot the Sphinx.
There's just one problem. To do that, I have to go to the legendary Chimera Academy. The all-boy academy, where everyone will hate me on principle. And I have to face the pilots of my future unit—all born and bred for this task.
Best friends August and Pollux, the pilots of the entwined chimeras Scylla and Charybdis, the heroes who once single-handedly repelled an attack from our worst enemies.
The mysterious, yet notorious Knox, pilot of the Cerberus, a fire-breathing demonic chimera almost as dangerous as its owner.
And last, but not least, Brendan, the heir of the Royal House of Chimera and pilot of the monstrous Typhon. How can I compare to them? And how can I discover all the secrets Chimera Academy is hiding?
Chimera Academy is a reverse harem bully academy series, and it will contain themes of heavy discrimination based on gender. Some scenes may make you want to punch certain characters in the face. But don’t worry, my MC will do that for you—with a giant robot! Also, the story will delve deeply into themes of mental health issues. There will be dark content ahead, so tread lightly!
ARC received in exchange for an honest review - thank you!
Somewhat to my surprise, I struggled a lot with this.
It has an absolutely amazing premise - mecha creatures called chimera, ancient mythological monsters, are controlled by men, until Selene comes along and becomes a mecha rider. She has to go to the all-male Chimera Academy to learn how to control her powers. Cue hysterical hatred from fellow men. Also, she's assigned to a squad who are just as determined to see her run out of the academy ('for her own protection') as her enemies.
So yes, pretty intriguing formula. Unfortunately it was dragged down by some of the WORST worldbuilding I have ever seen in my life. Things and places were poorly described, the writing was so bland that no emotions came through, and in general it felt like a cliched mash-up of Percy Jackson and Eragon. Which sounds amazing but in practice was boring, uninspired, and repetitive.
The characters... man, don't even get me started. It's told in five POVs, Selene and her four men, and I'd be hard-pressed to find ANY distinguishing features between all of them. They all sounded exactly like each other. Two of the men were so colourless I now remember nothing about them, the other two were slightly more interesting but never lived up to their promise.
The 'bullying' in the book was weird - OTT in some places, nonexistent in others. Since I could feel no real emotion between the heroine and heroes, I was left unimpressed by the 'betrayal' scenes between them and dramatic sentences like 'Little did I know then, doing this would be one of the worst mistakes of my life...' Etc etc. The single sex scene was awkward and unsexy.
So yeah, in short, reading this book was a bit of a waste of time, though I've given it two stars because I didn't find it what I'd call offensive. Just bland as hell.
Selene is the only woman able to pilot a chimera, a giant robot with the soul of a mythological creature—the Sphinx. She's sent to an academy to learn how to use her powers, but she face bullies everywhere, as the academy is all-males. Ever her broodmare are against her staying there.
I got really excited about this book when I first read the book. Gundam vibes? Sign me up for it. But I was left disappointed. Moreover, I cannot see how the relationship between Selena and her team developed as one day they were like "let's make her give up her place at the academy" and the next one like "let's protect and trust her".
Imaginative And Darkly Inspired View of a Dangerous Future
This book is incredibly innovative in it’s construction of concept. Selene is the daughter of the High Priestess of Gaia in North America. Sadly Selene has no magic of her own, and is instead drawn to the Chimera, the giant mechanoid constructions that house the souls of mythical beasts. The constructs were gifted to them by Tartarus, God of the Underworld to aid in destroying their foe, the Sun-Dwellers, or apsids. These foe nearly destroyed the Earth until the torment of the planet woke Gaia and Tartarus and they restored their magic into the world to save their planet.
Two hundred years after successfully fighting off the apsids Earth society has fractured into the Gaians who work Earth magic and healing and help rebuild Earth, to one day make it completely habitable again, and the Chimerans, who live in space on a asteroid where they live and train to fight the apsids in space. It also seems that only women can work with Gaia’s magic and only men can work with Tartarus magic. Until Selene. In an incident on Earth, Selene ends up bonding with a Chimeran, and they are forced to accept her for training at the Chimeran Academy, where she is thrust into a dangerous and unfamiliar world where women are treated as objects.
It’s a fascinating book, and I loved Selene, who felt she was very normal and ordinary, but she actually has a loving heart and a spine of steel. She was raised by a powerful woman, who had wisdom that she shared with her daughter, and an influential man, who taught his daughter all about Tartarus, and how to fight. She is unusual both on Earth and in space.
There is a lot unspoken in this book about the motives of the characters, but enough is revealed to tantalising. I couldn’t stop reading, because I wanted to find out what was going on.
1) I couldn't tell any of the characters apart. They all sounded the same - human (male or female) or robot. No one had a clear distinct personality, nor did anyone talk differently compared to the rest. If the chapters hadn't come with a name tag, I wouldn't have known who was talking.
2) None of the things in the "warning" bothered me, but the way sex, actual sex, was finally approached was somewhat abrupt and dumb. It was just a case of "hey, you're naked, we're naked, we're in the shower - let's bang". And then apparently that was it. No need to work on the relationship aaaaaany more than that. They go at it again and again, or so we're told, but it's just casually mentioned as a recap "oh yeah, we've banged some more, but it wasn't big enough of a deal for us to actually write it out". Which led to...
3) The relationships between the girl and at least two of the guys just happen. No build up. No actual feelings or thoughts of liking each other on any deep level. So why are the guys even in the book? And well, none of the relationships felt like they'd be that awesome to read about, really.
Aaaand 4) this girl, who is 19, calls the boys her "lovers". Which, for some reason, just goes to show how stiff everyone is in this book.
Also, the beginning was really heavy to read, in my opinion, seeing as the girl was in the middle of a fast-paced action scene, and yet we were drowned in background info and history. The book really was very focused on narration, a lot of the time, which made it rather boring to read. Or perhaps I just couldn't get into the whole world that this book was trying to build.
Story line is great and I loved the characters. I really enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it! Unexpected twists and turns had me reading this book in one sitting. Great storyline and character development made this book a hot and enjoyable read!

What a read! This unique well written story was just fantastic. A sci-fi / fantasy / paranormal reverse harem read that will just hook you from the very start. It is a bit dark and there is bullying in it so please be aware but I really enjoyed the multiple plot twists and the characters especially Selene our heroine! It’s suspenseful, it’s captivating and I cannot wait to read more!
Finished the entire book and I still don't understand a single thing of what's going on. Not to mention that the whole time of the book is extremely disturbing. It's starting to feel less like a fight between right and wrong and more of one where you choose between a bunch of wrongs...not sure how to explain it but the last chapter definitely made me extremely uncomfortable.
I do like the concept behind the world building. SciFi isn't really my thing but you add some elements of fantasy into it and I usually enjoy it.
I will continue onto the next book but I will also withhold passing any positive comment on the series yet. It doesn't seem very promising right now. Which is disappointing because it started off really great and I was really excited.
Anyways. Onto the next. We'll see how it goes. Hopefully this isn't another regret-read.
Really tried, the plot seemed interesting however the delivery was flat.
I was bored.
Assuming to keep us reading, out of the blue smut was chucked in and I was done.
The MMCs barely interact with the Selene. The time line makes you think it's been weeks yet the actual conversations fill one page. The heroine is basically bumbling about on assumptions for 45% of the story. Just.... why? The MMCs don't stand out, I'm hard pressed to remember their names.
I'm disappointed. The plot is original, machines with souls of god's and goddesses. This could have been epic.
First in the series, this book is a very good start. I quite enjoyed the story line, adding mythical spirits to giant metal beasts is not something I normally read about. I thought it was a more unique story. However, I'm just not sure about the relationship between the characters. I feel like there is not enough of a connection. I am hoping I will read more character development in the next books.
Souls of Steel, book 1 Chimera Academy series, was part of a Complete Collection I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). My favorite part of this book and story line, is that it could easily have stipped into all the typical sci-fi and woman-against-the-world tropes, but this author stayed on target and created a great female character and a fast-paced story line. I can't wait to slide into the second book.
She believes she do what a man can because she doesn't take after her mother. When she goes to school she is bullied to leave. Does she? Will she surprise her squad? And WHO IS MOTHER?
The plot was interesting but sometimes confusing. My worst complain is the relationships: what a jumbled mess. There's no progression, no chemistry, no logic in it. I feel let down
Fantastic premise and world building. Got weird vibes 50% in and checked the blurbs for the other two books. There's betrayal and pregnancy (the latter not being with her original lovers). Grim.

This is a start to a wonderful new series. Beautiful world building in this one. Lots of action to kepp you gripped. Well written plot and story line that is engaging from the start. Very different and intriguing. Characters are fleshed out well and I can't wait to read more about them. Need book two asap!!!! Recommend reading.

I do not know where to begin with this book. First and foremost I have to say that as I was reading this book I was totally picturing the movie Pacific Rim to get a better picture of the Chimera's. Totally picturing Charlie Hunnam as Knox or Brendan. Anyways back to what I was about to say. I FREAKING LOVED THIS BOOK!! It was deceptively hot and I am thirsty for more. (Yes pun intended there.)
Selene Renard is a child of Gaia but without Magic. She is a daughter of a High Priestess as well. So when she finds out that there will be a Chimera in the city she is at she wants to see it. She has always found Chimera's fascinating. She never imagined what would happen next. She meets Knox, Brendan, August and Pollux the four Grand Chimera's. This group of four men is pretty interesting to say the least. So when she shows up at the Academy and that set them on edge. One because they are attracted to her and another they don't want anything bad to happen to her. So they make a plan that either can make or break her. They did not expect her stubbornness and determination. Selene has a feeling about them and about other things going on and she is determined to prove everyone wrong. So her journey begins.
Oh my this book is sizzling hot, with action, and keeps you on your toes. It does leave in a mind blowing cliffhanger so beware. This is a great start to a new series and I cannot wait to read what is next.

So interesting and unique premise for me. Love this storyline so far. This is a bully/enemies to lovers type reverse harem. Selene is the first woman to become a chimera tamer in a new society where females are literally viewed as only sex slaves. So saying this is a big deal to everyone is kind of an understatement. Sphinx chose Selene and she accepted. It wasn’t going to be easy. Nothing about going to an all male academy would be easy. But Selene was determined to prove to herself and everyone else she could do it. Having her 4 fellow tamers all fall for her was icing on the cake. But there’s so much yet to find out. This is an absolute roller coaster. Around every turn there’s another question. Another secret. Another mystery. Everyone is against Selene. I can’t wait for Book 2 so we can find out more about what’s going on!!
Souls of Steel by Eva Brandt is the first book in the Chimera Academy series. This book is a science fiction paranormal reverse harem adventure that occurs several hundred years in the future after the Earth has been partially destroyed by alien attack and humanities destruction of the planet when they tried to destroy the alien invaders. Out of this catastrophe came a new age and this is where the story begins. The main character, Selene is a woman out to challenge the gender role that has been forced upon her by attending an all male military academy and becoming a Chimera pilot. This book is very unique with lots of twists and turns. It has some very dark themes but that is part of why I enjoyed it so much. This book is definitely a winner. Souls of Steel is a very unique futuristic paranormal military academy adventure.
Selene is a Terran woman, curious about Chimeras, but she knows she is not supposed to be around them, When one is to be displayed, she sneaks in with a friend to see it - but when the Sphinx claims her as her trainer, she cant help but accept. It means going to the Chimera Academy, which has been strictly for males. How will she manage to get herself accepted by the other students? It seems that even the Judiciary wants her gone - or dead - can even her Chimera help her survive? Will any of them uncover the plots that are underlying everything? There are some triggers in this story, but I found it great reading, and look forward to finding out what will happen to Selene and her harem.

I love stories about an underdog prevailing against the odds. This book was definitely that. I really loved the main female character, Selene. She was determined and strong yet still logical and compassionate. I especially enjoyed her interactions with Sphinx. I was really angry with the rampant misogyny found on Tartarus Base but that was the point, I believe. I am looking forward to the baddies getting their comeuppance in future installments. Overall, this book was different and fun. I definitely recommend it especially to lovers of SFR, RH and strong female leads.
This is a fantastic start to a new series and I absolutely loved it. Selene is the daughter of a high priestess but Selene has no magic whatsoever she wants to live a normal life but I’m afraid that it doesn’t happen because Selene goes to see a Chimera and it changes her whole life and now she has been sent to the Academy where there are only male Chimera pilots and having a female pilot brings out so many emotions in the men. Being the only female pilot with a bunch of men is going to bring Selene some heavy duty bullying. Amazing story and wow what a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
What really shines in this book is the author’s care in creating complex and layered sci-fi elements that guide the world building and make the setting feel very real. This is a darker reverse harem, with A LOT of misogyny and patriarchal elements. The academy theme isn’t as strong as in other books in this genre, but lends an interesting backdrop to the main plot. This is also a bit more of the medium/fast burn as the FMC is intimate with the harem quite quickly.
With a strong FMC and a group of misguided boys what could possibly go wrong? Selene is chosen as the tamer for The Sphinx and taken on a wild ride into a world where Brendan, Knox, August and Pollux try to protect her in all the wrong ways until the get it through their thick (male) brains that to truly protect her she needs to be theirs. This is a wonderful example of an author who looks to extend our imagination in the best possible way.

Selene only wants to be something other than a female without Gaias Gift shes not like her mother her path brings her to the Chimira Academy the dormant Sphynx has chosen her as her tamer. But Brendan, knox, August and Pollux stand in her way. There is heat, danger and a mysterious terrorist group and Selene has another admirer what danger will she face next. I love the plot twist that this author throws in and I cant wait till the next book comes out.

This book was really different. It brings in every kind of emotions, people, and more. I didn't get into the book like I would hope and it did leave a cliffhanger, so now I have to wait for the next book. I'm not really big on big cliffhangers. If you don't have the stomach for emotion turmoil , you might want to think twice on reading this book. Keep an open mind for this read, so you can know that some of this really happens now. (not the machines)

An academy story with a sci-fi and magical theme. It has a slight darkness at times that just helps make it more intense. The main character of Selene is easy to care about. She is an inquisitive innocent that gets dragged into something so much bigger than her little world. She will become the first female to control a chimera. And in a world totally controlled by males she will be beaten both verbally and physically. But she is so much more and can take anything they throw at her. Then add in the four young men and things get hot and evening more dangerous.
I can't even begin to express how much I loved this book. I have a huge love for mechas and when I heard of this book, I couldn't wait to read it! I enjoyed every second of this book and anyone who loves mechas as much as me, will definitely enjoy this new take on them. The love story mixed in wasn't bad either. I would have liked to have more steamy bedroom scenes but I'll take what I can get. I can't wait for the next book!
I'm not usually a big fan of sci-fi. I need to be in the mood for this genre before i pick up this kind of book but i'm sure glad i did with Souls of Steel. I found myself engrossed in the story and i had to finish the book but at the same time i never wanted it to end!! Eva Brandt work is definitely a must read for me. I love all her books i've read so far.
