Dragon Hunters #1

The Dragon Hunter's Son

Rate this book
A land of castles, swords, and dragons... except the dragons are just stories now. The dragon hunters have done their job too well.

Philip travels from town to town as his dragon hunter father chases old glories and the next drink. Philip is there to carry the bags, tend to the horses, and fade into the background. The promise of riches brings them to a village in a remote valley, but Philip longs to find something – or someone – to call his own.

When a mysterious and compelling stranger appears in town, Philip hopes for connection – even a romance if they can hide it from his father. But the stranger has secrets of his own.

I thoroughly enjoyed Hanna Dare’s 'Mind and Machine' series, but I’m not totally convinced by this one.

I’m not sure whether the tone of the writing is deliberately fairy-tale style, or if it simply felt like that to me. This is about dragons and men and love and has - despite a couple of ‘hot‘ scenes – Ejoler is a fire-breathing dragon after all - an air of innocence about it.

Nothing wrong with that, of course, but what I really missed was some depth.
I needed more world building, more details about dragons and how Ejoler lives his life. I wanted to know how the two men are going to have a life together when Ejoler will easily outlive Philip and Philip has no life plan whatsoever.
But maybe this is only book 1 in a series?

I liked Philip and Ejoler, and this was by all means a pleasant read, but – I must be greedy – I had hoped for more.

The relationship development was non-existent, because no, I don’t consider a bunch of sex scenes and half a serious conversation a relationship, and Philip was a completely insipid character. His supposed character development felt forced, I couldn’t believe in it at all because I couldn’t feel him change, his growth didn’t feel real, one day he just went from complete doormat to a half-doormat. Ejoler was better drawn as a character, but as I said, I didn’t buy the relationship and the plot was half predictable and half boring, although I think it would’ve been perfectly enjoyable if I’d liked and cared for the characters and their relationship more. Or at all.

I’m not really in the headspace to write a thoughtful review but I want to give this sweet little gem a shout out. With the world on fire, I’ve had a lot of trouble concentrating and staying “in” stories as I try to read. I didn’t have that problem at all with The Dragon Hunter’s Son. It was fresh, entertaining and relatively light but I think what allowed me to stay so completely in the story was that it wasn’t really our world. It was lovely to truly escape into another world, and better yet, one with dragons!

The ability to stay immersed in an alternate world wasn’t the only draw though. The characters were unique and compelling and were not stereotypically and classically “beautiful.” I always love that.

The romance was a bit insta but in a paranormal world with magic and dragons, I didn’t mind it, especially given how engaged I was and how the story allowed me respite from the real world.

I read this on KU but enjoyed it so much I have purchased it as well.

4.5 stars rounded up.

Edited to add after reading for a second time:
I decided to re-read The Dragon Hunter’s Son timed with the release of its sequel, Chasing Wings. The timing was perfect in that I surely needed the distraction once again and just as before, I thoroughly enjoyed it and was whisked away into its world. I’m really looking forward to diving right into Chasing Wings.

One thing I forgot to mention in my review previously was how much I loved the epilogue! I’m often epilogue ambivalent but this one was really sweet. It was lovely to catch a glimpse of Lily’s life a few years down the road.

Very cute.
The Dragon Hunter's son who falls in love with a dragon. 💛
The story isn't particularly deep but I did enjoy the dragon's characterization and the way he carries on about jewels. It was incredibly adorable. The main protagonist was lovable, kind hearted despite his less than ideal father and still had some fire in him when the occasion called for it.
Overall it was a nice story despite it not being particularly memorable.
Definitely recommend for an easy-read with a lovely HEA when one isn't in the mood for anything heavy or intricate. It's straight forward in characterization and storytelling.

Sweet 💜

For me it started off a bit slow, but I kept trudging along. I have to say I’m glad I did. It really was a sweet story and it picked up for me when they first went to the Earl’s house. It would be nice if the author would have addressed their lifespan. I can only assume that Ejoler will outlive Philip, and then what happens? Sorry, it’s how I think 😬

If there is such a thing like a cozy fantasy this is it. There is definitely an air of fairytale in this story which was exactly what I was looking for, so how could I not enjoy the adventure of Philip, the dragon hunter's son. He's traveling with his father through the kingdom and looks out for him like he promised his mother before she passed away. There is not much love between those two but they get along like families sometimes do when they are back on their own, when one is still reliving his glorious days and the other let him get away with that attitude although the last victory is 18 years in the past and dragons are extinct ... until they aren't but what does a dragon know about humans. Probably nothing about their kindness and obviously nothing about the possibilities of a human body and the pleasure it can bring.

The characters are mostly fresher than the medieval fantasy background usually allows and I loved Lily the bar maid for that and Ejoler, the haughty dragon was a pleasant surprise. So why going a half step down from a 4 star rating? I wasn't convinced about the I-Love-You's at the time when they came (although it was sweet and I was completely on board with the way they said it) and that scene when Philip finally stood up against his father was too rushed and didn't rang true but latest with the epilog the author had me back again. Wouldn't mind to see those 2 again.

I really enjoyed this author's Mind + Machine series and was curious about this series with more of a fantasy slant. The concept is interesting, but ultimately it didn't feel quite as engaging as her sci-fi series. Maybe because it was a bit shorter in length? I still enjoyed it, and I plan to continue with the series, but I didn't ever feel super deeply invested in the characters here.

This was a cute dragon book!

Perfect length for a casual one-day read. A dragon hunter's son meets a peculiar newcomer in town, a man who ends up being a dragon.

This was just...nothing.

• the plot(?) was slow and almost absent for the longest while...in fact I'm not entirely sure what the plot actually is still

• it took forever for the other MC to show up (assuming that's the other MC)...

• characters lack depth - Philip is a doormat with no other features, the dragon has absolutely no personality

• the only character with personality is Lily, random woman. also the only character I cared about. take over the valley and be cool as heck, you dont need no man

Overall, this was just boring. Nothing happened. No one mattered.

This was surprisingly good! I say surprising because the blurb did not help at all. I can’t count the number of times I saw this book, read the blurb and decided to pass on it.

Don’t know what drew me to this today but I’m glad I took a chance because it was good! There’s a bit of a melancholic undertone to it which kinda stayed with me throughout the whole book. I’m not sure if it’s the writing or just my mood.

Phillip is such a nice character - kind, helpful but certainly has an air of wounded soul. Ejoler, on the other hand, was definitely portrayed very well. Something just not quite right with him 😆

Definitely a good read 👍

3 stars means I liked it. It was a cute, self-contained story with elements I appreciated: dragons, people growing up and making their own decisions, and some fighting. I loved the epilogue. Nice job by Hanna Dare.

“I — I have decided that if I gave you reason to look at me that way again, it would be a better fate to die by steel than to bear it. What I am trying to say is that your opinion matters a great deal to me, Philip. More than anything else in the world.”

The Dragon Hunter's Son is the first book in Hanna Dare's Dragon Hunter's trilogy, and the first book I have read about this author. This features a fantasy romance between the dragon, Ejolnar, and Philip, a human who is the son of a once-famed dragon hunter.

Ejolnar and Philip's relationship starts from mutual lust, develops into something more, but secrets and fears between them cause them to part. Yet despite their hurts, their undeniably attracted to one another and realize they need each other, especially because Philip is willing to try and right the wrongs his own kin have caused. There were quite a few swoony lines from our closed-off dragon, and I did enjoy the bond they had, and how Philip was the one who taught Ejolnar about sex. Plus - the flying scene, and the dragon hoard sex scene? Ohhh man.

Pacing wise, this book struggled being slow and not really upping the stakes on something that I felt should be more important. Or maybe it is just the writing didn't evoke the tension and suspense in me? I'm not sure. World-building was little but I know it is expanded in the trilogy, if I really wanted to learn more. The world does have some homophobia in it, but I liked that there were places where this wasn't true and that it is suggested they do go to visit there.

The writing itself just wasn't quite pulling me in. Maybe it is the 3rd person single POV, or some of the descriptions and lack thereof, but it just wasn't enough to get me emotionally invested to what happened to the characters even though tropes wise it does line up for me. One thing that wasn't addressed is the fact Philip is human and will eventually die long before Ejolnar does. That troubled me.

The epilogue itself was super sweet and admittedly gave me some feelings, for the overall queer family in fantasy vibes. I don't think I'll continue the series, but it wasn't a bad romp.

“I think I understand.” He touched Ejoler’s face. “And I love you, too.”

DRAGONS.
That's it. That's my review.

I kid. I do wish there were more dragons. And magic. But I'm pretty happy with what we got. This is sweet and sexy. Ejoler and Philip are adorable. There's first times and new adventures. There's bad guys and a happily ever after. I adored the friendship between Philip and Lily and how that came full circle in the way that it did.

if I was to be picky the elements in the book could have been expanded but take it for what it is and enjoy. Really is a lovely book.

**grm** (some spoilers)

I wasn't sure about my rating for this book until I reached the last pages and the epilogue. Then I decided to round it up to 4 stars.
I liked the MCs as a couple(here the "virgin" wasn't the human, but the handsome dragon top), but I wished there was way more happening in the story, and that the finale would tell us something more about how Philip and his Dragon are going to live now. We found out that they are raising Ejoler's niece, the one that got out of the egg, but that is something we could already have guessed. What I really wanted to know is if Philip life's span is going to increase by having a Dragon as lover (or mate?), because not knowing that couldn't make me really happy for them. Ejoler is a young Dragon, he is 136 and for dragons that means he is around Philip's age(20) when they meet, but the man also tells us that his race can live for thousand of years, so I really hoped the author would tell us that they would now live the same, and that the sweet Dragon will not be left alone once Philip reaches old age. We can't know that, because in the epilogue we don't know how much time passed for sure, but Philip seems to be now 30 and the girl they are with 8, we don't know if only 10 years passed and if so Philip is aging like a normal human(we don't even know after how many years the girl came out of the egg, since we don't see that on page), or if more years passed and he just looks like a 30 years old man. I wish we could know. It was a sweet story with some angst(In the end I also pitied Jaxon, Philip's father) and also if it went a bit too fast, it wasn't bad. But for all the reasons I added up, I can't rate it more then 3.5 stars rounded to 4.

Ps= at start I was also annoyed a bit by Lily, but in the end she was a good girl and helped our guys, so I started to like her.

4.25 stars.

There was hardly a flaw with the idea of the Dragon Hunter's Son. The premise was well thought out and the setting was interesting. The prose was well executed, both in terms of editing and flow. The characters were for the most part detailed and interesting. I had only one real qualm, and that was that I felt like the love interest was just a bit less detailed than any other character. It was plain that the author wanted him to be a mysterious figure, and I respect that. But it felt like that came at the cost of sacrificing his characterisation.

I really liked Lily. The best character in the book.

Absolutely adorable shapeshifter dragon and human romance. It’s a quick read and just made me happy the whole time. I expected a little more conflict and angst, but was happy when it didn’t happen. Some instalove and cutesy stuff with dragon cliches, but I liked it.

MMy Thoughts and Review:
It has been so hard to escape into my books of late. However, Hanna Dare took me on an adventure into a realm I believe to be much like that of Arthurian Legend with its bold tales of wizards and dragon slayers. This tale though is of the overlooked, often under-appreciated, steadfast, and noble-hearted son of the dragon slayer, Philip. Philip, who follows behind his father often cleaning his messes, working to pay off his father's debts, and keeping his father's tales of past courage in fighting dragons from getting him in trouble in the face of present altercations.
With Philip's sweet disposition and stalwart heart, he makes friends with the inn's maid and one of its wealthy patrons.

This was such a nice break from the typical shifter fantasy recipes that take two blokes, add a bit of chaos and dilemma, 2 sex scenes (because it can't be gay romance without that), and a quick wrap up (even if confusing) in a red bow.

In this fantasy world, I got to feel the snowfall on my face and hands, smell the sulfur from the hot springs, feel the cold hard earth under me, and the air whip through my hair. I imagined the pain Philip went through and the embarrassment his father often made him feel. Then for him to finally connect and make both a friend and a confidante to share his most scary and painful moments with. I experienced all of that and more.

The author does an amazing job with their storytelling. You will breeze through this one in one sitting and devour each word on the page. I let my TTS read to me using the Scottish brogue, Stuart. I looked for one with a Welsh accent but so far, I've had no luck. If you use TTS as I do, give Stuart a try, he's pretty cool.

If you are in need of a different kind of fantasy or looking for a new author to try, give THE DRAGON HUNTER'S SON a chance, you won't regret it.

It wasn’t a horrible book but it wasn’t amazing either.

It was insta-lust and insta-love. The characters were having sex and confessing their love within days of knowing each other. The first “I love you” was said almost 70%~ in but in the book only days have passed since they first met each other.
I wasn’t feeling the romance (since there was barely any build up to it. That certainly would have helped.) but a boy that was just excited to have sex and fall in love with a man and escape his father and a dragon that hasn’t had contact with anybody in a while and was new to the whole “falling in love and having sex with a man” thing. It felt like two teenagers experimenting more than 2 adults falling in love in a normal manner.

The whole egg thing was given much fanfare only to fall flat at the end. It was never explained why Philip (a human) could hear a voice coming from the egg but nobody else could, they escaped with the egg so a few scenes of them with it while the baby grew, or even the god damn birth of the baby dragon, would have been nice. We only get an epilogue with the child already been born and like 4 years old. Way to destroy the whole egg thing.

Like I said, it wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t great either. If it was more fleshed out and had more content (good substantial content not filler) with a well paced romance, it would have been amazing because dragons, man. I didn’t read anywhere that this was a short story so that’s even worse because as it is, it gave the feeling of a short story.

A dragon hunter's son, falls in love with a dragon. I was hoping it would be an exciting read, but it ended up being slow and failed to hold my attention. I found myself skimming early on, which is never a good thing.

The best thing I can say is, the characters were likable. Especially Lily, one of the minor characters. Now her story is one I'd be interested in reading.

This will be my last attempt to read a book by this author. Machine Metal Magic is the only book I really liked, and it remains a favorite.

For all her other books, however:

The author touts she writes character-driven stories and I have to agree with her on this point - both MCs are well written and likeable - especially Phillip. As for the fantasy - well there are definitely dragons here, but with rather thinly sketched world-building ... given that almost all action occurs within a remote small highland township (mainly the local watering-hole hostel), the surrounding hillsides and caves and a worn-down ominous looking manor-hold of the local lord. My interest was retained by some description of dragon magic and artefact- related power and enchantments but mostly it was the lovely dynamic and relationship built between Ejoler and Phillip that kept me going. Romance readers will be pleased there are some mild-moderate heat M-M sexy-times and a believable HEA to be found in the epilogue. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 for a nice first-exposure to a new author (for me).

Wonderfully built story

I wish there was more because I loved this. A dragon hunters son and a dragon coming together and creating their own family. I wish we’d gotten more back story on dragons or the Earl. I feel like the world building was really well done and will be reading more from this author.

Whilst I preserved in reading this story it was incredibly slow and plodding. I found it frustrating that a rather interesting premise could be stretched out so much as to take what could have been an amazing story and made it rather mundane. There was very little relationship building between what were supposedly the main characters.

Lovely and quick

A good book, with enjoyable characters and a quick pace, without feeling rushed. Philip and Ejoler were an interesting pair, and the supporting characters felt like fully formed individuals in their own right. Recommended.
