Wow, I was NOT expecting that from Yotsuba's backstory. Holy shit, that hit a lot harder than I thought it would. Fucking hell, I feel so bad for her and what she's been doing to herself emotionally. Shit.
Only a more amusing note, I love how Nino actively convinces herself that she's never said anything awful to Futaro, despite having several instances to the contrary pop up in her mind. Denial is a powerful emotion and one Nino struggles with despite the strides she's made. By the way, I love how proactive she's been, not just voicing her feelings for Futaro, but actually trying to win him over. While she's still unlikable at times, I can't deny that she's grown a lot throughout this series.
Speaking of growth, Futaro continues to show his growth and I am all here for it. I love his dedication to the quintuplets as well as acknowledging the fun he has with them. He can still be a bit dense, but he's catching on faster than most harem protagonists, so I consider that a plus.
Damn, only three volumes left! I'm nervous and excited that I'm so close to the finish line, but I can't wait to see what happens now!
The biggest mystery in the series, aside from who Futaro marries, is which sister he met all those years ago. This volume gives us our answer and more! With this reveal, we also receive an accompanying backstory for said sister. From the story thus far we know that Yotsuba likes to put people before herself, which has caused conflict in the past. Even though this characteristic sparks a couple of issues here and there, I always thought how endearing and admirable of a trait it was. However, I never could've imagined the harmful mindset that fuels her self-sacrificing nature.
Being one of five identical sisters has its challenges, especially when it comes to individuality. The lack of distinction between them all was the reason that Yotsuba was not able to say goodbye to Futaro the day they met. The lack of distinction is why Futaro didn't notice he was talking to somebody completely different that night. That is why Yotsuba made it her mission to be identifiable, to carve her own identity. She started wearing a ribbon, she started focusing on her studies, she started joining clubs, she wanted to be better than her sisters. She wanted to be on top. She was so hellbent on being different from her sisters, she started grabbing any opportunity to prove her superiority. Yotsuba's quest to be the best preoccupied her so much she ended up flunking, this wouldn't be a big deal but because of the school she and her sisters were attending, this means expulsion. Upon hearing the news that Yotsuba would have to switch schools, the sisters rallied behind her and revealed that they cheated on the final exams so they too could be expelled.
All this time Yotsuba had been trying to one-up her sisters, all this time she had been trying to alienate herself from them, so for the other quints to sacrifice themselves so their sister is not alone hits Yotsuba like a truck. From this point on her psyche does a complete 180. She no longer wants to be the best sister, all she wants now is the best for her sisters. However, this new mindset comes at a price. Yotsuba realized how wrong she was for trying to be the top sister, she realized how disappointed her mother would've been to see her trying to dissociate from the group, and she realized the burden she's been to her sisters as a result. Yotsuba wants the best for her sisters, and everyone in fact but at the expense of herself.
Going back to volume 4, Futaro and Yotsuba go on a "date" and on that date they do activities that the other sisters like to do. So when Futaro finally realizes this, he asks her what she wants and Yotsuba can't reply. At the time, I really only chalked this up as just a part of her altruistic character type, never would I have guessed that it went this deep. Because of her past, she genuinely believes that she does not deserve to be happy if it means that her sisters can't experience that same happiness. In chapter 81 she confesses, "It's only natural that they end up happier than I do". Considering Yotsuba's usual cheerfulness, reading this hurts. You can only help but wonder how much of that bubbly personality is a facade for others. Tying this back to her backstory with Futaro, it's obvious from the read that their chance encounter left an impression on her, a big one. It is also clear that from the moment they met, Yotsuba has loved him.
My favorite panel ever is in this volume. It is the full pager with Yotsuba on the swing saying "I have loved you all this time". By this point in the volume when I first read it, I was already crying profusely, because I was not expecting such a tragic backstory for this seemingly joyful character. When I got to this full-pager though, I had to put the book down because of how much I was sobbing. Pages before this panel, the author had done a little montage of Yotsuba noticing her sisters develop feeling her Futaro, all the while her accepting the fact that she can not pursue him despite her feelings because she wants her sisters to be happy with him. Not only does she believe she is unworthy of love/happiness, but she also does not want it. She's accepted her detrimental role and she is content with it.
This volume really blew me away, and her backstory still gets to me even though I've read this so many times. Thank you for reading, Yotsuba is the most tragic female character in anime history. She is the best sister without a doubt and this volume cements that.
Not really a fan of harem romance story ||orz Even if there were a lot of people telling me this series is somewhat different from regular(?) cliche(?) harem stories out there. I still felt like I am not belong here? Like lost in the harem forest?
Jadi paham kenapa teman saya menolak melanjutkan terjemahan ini. Yep, jelas bukan karena dia "baper" tokoh favoritnya gak dipilih si cowok tokoh utama. Hoax betul itu.
So we get growth from Ichika, deciding what she wants to do with her life, and Nino and Miku are both playing for keeps now. Itsuki seams to be the most worried about keeping the sisters together, even though she supports Ichika when she leaves to do her shoot. I like how they are all slowly maturing and thier bonds are strengthening. The cute art is a big bonus too :)
This volume, at its first half, was a sort of improvement because the quintuplets felt like fully fleshed out characters again. For some reason, the whole background given to Fuutarou and mysterious quintuplet seemed a soft retcon because it didn’t quite fit with has been shown but it didn’t bother much. Mostly due to the route I thought this was going. The last half was the same rom-com tone, which doesn’t work for me in this story.

Finally, FINALLY a volume that not only made me feel something positive but captivated me too. The second half isn't all that impressive, but the first half of the volume is the best of anything that has happened in this series. It gives a retelling of the events of the comic thus far but from the perspective of Yotsuba. The insight into her backstory and character is beautiful and even emotional.
Unlike every other sister, I feel like I understand Yotsuba on a deeper level and that she's a complicated person beyond the basic harem archetypes everyone else slots into. She's layered and has conflicting motivations like a real person. I really felt for her and am rooting for her all the way.
I want her to win. At this point I believe she will.
Other than Yotsuba being amazing, the rest of the manga is alright. If I choose to overlook the sexualization of the twins, at least. It finally feels like something is happening and the characters are changing for the better. Dynamics are shifting and the status quo is fading away.
This volume... gosh, what a ride. This was the most backstory heavy volume we've had and I am so THANKFUL for it! I think this backstory really ties things together and allows us as the readers to understand the characters better. I, of course, won't spoil anything, but I can say, the girl was unexpected. I will not lie about that.
Anyway, I don't have much else to say that hasn't already been gushed about in previous reviews (aka: how much I love these quintuplets), so I am going to go and read volume twelve!
CAWPILE: 7.93

Decisions are made, and now, everyone is starting to...
Futaro comes out of his shell. The girls have mostly decided what path they wish to pursue. But who will Futaro choose, in the end? And now he's directing & costarring in an indie film?!?! Waaaaaa? All this, and a trip to both the beach, & the pool, too! Cuteness overload! Art, fantastic. Dialogue, heartfelt. Characters, believable, likeable, relatable, adorable.
This series is superb. This book just didn't do it for me. Yes, it has a couple of nice moments, but I just felt like I was reading something that was just trying to stretch out the time before the ending. Not wholly a filler book, but it felt enough of one to lose a star. That being said, still one of my favorite recent series. Definitely worth a look!
Verdict: If you like QQ keep going, even if like me you didn't get much from this, the series is great.
I love this series so much. I love how the author writes these characters, they just feel so natural.
Yotsuba has a really great couple of chapters showcasing how she is really just a people pleaser with no real goals of her own. Because of that she suppressed her feelings for Futaro.
I’m still not sure which girl I want winning it. My heart says Miku is the best one for him and she liked him the longest.
Everything comes full circle, such an important part in the series! With the end of the school year around the corner and the things revealed here it really feels like were progressing towards the end game with this volume. I have given everything from The Quintessential Quintuplets a 5/5 and this is no exception. Actually, I would say this is the best volume in the series, go read it!
This is my favorite volume in the series because of the flashback chapters. It was extremely adorable seeing all the girls and Futaro as children, along with learning a lot about Yotsuba. She almost seemed like the sister that was left out, in terms of the overall storyline so this volume was very much appreciated.
The Yotsuba backstory was a strong way to open the volume. We then get a lot of development with the quints. We can tell that the end is coming as characters are coming to terms and decisions for the direction they want to go in. The ending felt a little flat when compared to the strong opening.
The closer we get to the end of the series the more I just don’t care who he ends up with. Protag is so underdeveloped, that the flashbacks we get of his past as brief as they are show off more personality than his current incarnation. The girls are all so one note, I just can’t believe how little I know about them. Maybe 5 was too many.
Yotsuba fails her make-up exam and flunks out. Yotsuba confesses to herself that she's the one who loved Futaro for all those years. Futaro tries to convince Ichika not to leave High School for her acting career. Ichika takes a leave of absence from school and moves out.
