I think most of this plot is excellent, and the author does a good job of creating a modern story set in the legal world that parallels Pride and Prejudice. I like her writing style, too, which is engaging.

Liza Bennett is preparing to be a lawyer, cramming for her bar exam, which is the last step before she anticipates getting a significant role in her father's legal firm. She's been doing intern work there for nine years and has lots of ideas about how to turn things around at the currently struggling business. John Wickham is a new lawyer at the firm who quickly ingratiates himself to Mr. Bennett - and everyone else, including Mrs. Bennett and Liza's teenage sister Lily.

Will Darcy is a lawyer at the prestigious Fitz Williams law firm, and his friend Charles Bingley is a professional tennis player. Bingley's parents (who never appear) are new residents near the Bennetts, and Mrs. Bennett pointedly invites the Bingleys to her charity event, with Jane, Liza, and their friend Cher providing musical entertainment for the guests. Charles is smitten by Jane, Will is overheard insulting Liza, and the P&P plot is immediately recognizable.

Generally, it's a light, feel-good story. I do question Liza's lack of investigation when she recognizes the after-effects of a date rate drug (nothing bad happens, but she was slipped a mickey in her drink the previous evening). I also find the HEA scenes where Charles finally declares himself to Jane and where Will declares himself to Liza to be jump-the-shark moments. Otherwise, it's a solid plot.

The writing flows well, and the author is clearly talented. Unfortunately, repeated errors in verb tense occur throughout the entire book. I stopped noting the many incidents where a sentence switches inexplicably to present tense when it should be either past tense or past perfect tense. Ditto for missing commas. Some authors use too many commas or misplace them; in this case, they're often absent where they're needed. The author has raw talent, but this book cries out for the polish a good editor should have provided.

It's a good book with some significant flaws.

Love and Law

TYPE OF NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice Modern-day Adaptation

SETTING: Present Day, West Coast, USA

SYNOPSIS: In between studying for the bar exam and starting at her father’s law firm, Liza Bennett has herself a busy summer! Not to mention: her sister Jane falling for a professional tennis player, her mother trying to set her up with the quirky nephew of her father’s law firm partner, and new acquaintances in town keeping her distracted. Can Liza be there for her sister, help her father save his firm, and prepare for the most important exam of her life all at the same time? Or will the insufferable yet gorgeous Will Darcy, who keeps challenging her and turning up wherever she goes, mess with all her goals?

WHAT I LOVED:

- Lawyered!: I love the legal/lawyer theme with this story! And I really admired all the clever ways Danica Dawn utilized this environment to translate characters and situations from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice in a modern way that made sense, such as Bennett & Collins being a law firm partnership and old Mr. Collins having an outdated stipulation that firm partners can only be male. I also thought the lawyer atmosphere worked well in regards to the Liza-Darcy-Wickham relationship/interactions and the developments we see later on in the story.

- Playful Tone: This book is full of funny incidents, flirty banter, and fun with friends. I enjoyed the warm, sincere, and unabashed/tell-it-like-it-is tone Ms. Dawn employs. It felt very much like a conversation between friends. It reminded a little of the The Lizzie Bennet Diaries with its humor and accessibility – full of characters readers can relate to and situations they understand.

- Sassy and Smart: What a delightful mixture – I loved seeing the sassy side of Liza, who is quick to make a joke, wield her sharp tongue, and make sport of herself and others. But I also enjoyed the hardworking and enterprising Liza, who is studiously studying for her exam and has compiled strategic marketing ideas to implement at her father’s law firm. Liza was an admirable character and it was easy to fall in love with her and be on her side! #TeamEliza

- Musical Theatre Fun: I saw it mentioned in Danica Dawn’s bio that she loves the theatre, and I appreciated how she inserted some fun song choices and musical theatre nods for readers to spot. I love that Liza (Lizzy) and Cher (Charlotte) are named after their mother’s favorite performers, and I absolutely adored the place Will brought Liza after she took her bar exam – it was indeed “greatness” (and I love that he knew of a place like that!)

WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:

- Some More, Please: I think the pacing felt a little uneven, with a lot of important events occurring in quick succession at the end. I wouldn’t have minded a couple chapters more to draw out these eventful and pivotal scenes, and you know…more Will and Liza scenes wouldn’t have been too bad either… 😉

- Feeling Green: It is weird to comment on this, but there were a lot of vomit incidents in this story. All three Bennett sisters, at different times, and for different reasons – maybe one incident less would have been better?

CONCLUSION:

Light, lively, and full of lawyers – Pride and Prejudicial is an entertaining and engaging modern-day adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Austenesque fans will find this book to be the delightful diversion they need at stressful times! I look forward to reading more from Danica Dawn!

Cute and funny

A modern reimagination of Pride and Prejudice.

I thought it was a cute, funny and compelling read.

Liza Bennett was a law-student with her last exams, right around the corner.

Her mother threw a charity garden party and had invited the up and coming tennis player Charles Bingley who entered the fray with his friend and his sister. (I will not give too much away but the insult was fabulous.)

The framework of canon was recognisable but the events were much changed to fit the modern era, I thought it was well adapted.
Collins was hysterical with his birds...

Recommend.

This modern variation follows the outline of P&P closely.

One difference is that there are only three Bennet sisters. Jane is an actress while Lydia is still at home. Elizabeth has not only graduated from Meryton College of Law but also has worked as an intern in her father's and Mr. Collins' Law Firm. She is studying for the Bar Exam whenever she can squeeze in a moment. She has high hopes of working her way up in the firm but worries as the firm has seen a recent fall off of business and thus revenue. Plus the family has been forced to also economize.

However the latter fact does not stop Mrs. Bennet from holding her annual Benefit Garden Party at which she demands Liza and her friend, Cher, perform. It is shortly after their outrageously forward and funny act that Elizabeth overhears an insult. Darcy and Caroline are in attendance along with Charles Bingley, a rising tennis star, whose rich and famous father has a house in the neighbor. Of course, Bingley and Jane quickly become an item.

As I said this story follows canon closely. My biggest complaint is one which Debbie wrote about in her review: the verb tenses keep changing and make for bumpy reading. Many times I had to reread a sentence to understand what was really being said, whether it was a reflection of what had passed or what was presently being commented on.

This Elizabeth continues to work at her father's law firm. However a John Wickham has been hired and he soon has gained her father's accolades. He soon moves into a private office: a privilege Elizabeth had coveted and expected for herself "as the boss' daughter". Partner, Gregory Collins,d dies and his nephew has arrived to help with probate of the will in regards to the law firm. Darcy's law firm offers to buy the firm also.

Some of the amusing events include a number of times when either one of the young ladies in this story overindulges in drink or is slipped a date rape drug or is made sick on purpose by her mother. (More than one dress is soiled.)

The Honorable Judge Catherine de Bourgh makes her appearance and makes her demands. Colin Collins happens to have a "thing" about birds...some of the funniest parts of this story.

I enjoyed this story. It does have lots of misunderstandings between Darcy and Elizabeth and that awful proposal but the second one is rather amusing. No fine speeches there.

Modern variation with a lot of confusion in parties

I have enjoyed the story with Liza and Will. John Wickham is despicable.
Jane is an actress, Liza is a law graduate taking the bar exam and Lily is still in high school. Charlie Bingley is a tennis player and Will is lawyer.
Quite weird/funny Colin Colling and Cher is her girlfriend and Liza's best friend.
I am not sure why is so important to say that Will is pale so many times.

A few annoying typos and grammatical mistakes have made an appearance too.

Review: I really liked this book! I thought it was super cute and a great romance book. The book kept in line with the original Pride and Prejudice tale and the author did amazing to modernize it. I work in the criminal justice field and I thought the story was interesting from a legal perspective. The book had great writing and great world building. The characters were very developed and the story was intriguing from start to finish!

My only issue is that I thought the book was very slow in certain places (like the original novel) but that didn’t last for long. I also thought the book was a bit too quick in some areas and they could have been slowed down to better absorb the reader into the world.

Verdict: A very sweet and cute book! Definitely recommend!

Honest confession…… I hated pride and prejudice, I don’t know if it was the writing style used or the fact that I had been told I had to read it. However, I LOVED this retelling.
It truly is a fantastic read; Danica has pulled me in from the very beginning. The writing style is modern and inviting, I became so lost in this gorgeous story that I finished it in less than three hours.
This is a book that has made me giggle throughout, you just can’t help it. I love the characters; especially Liza and Will. They have made this book perfect for me.
I must admit, this is my first read by this author; it definitely will not be my last. I loved everything about this one and honestly have nothing negative to say.
This is a definite five star read, which I highly recommend.

This is a modern day retelling of Pride and Prejudice. I have never read Pride and Prejudice so this story was all new to me and I loved it! A sweet romance story coupled with the modern issues that plague our society today, bullying, gossip and the dangers in the clubs that everyone needs to know about.
Three sisters, Jane the oldest an actress, Liza a law school graduate who is studying for the bar exam and works at her dad’s law offices, Lily the baby of the family is going into her last year of high school, and a mom that will stop at nothing to get them married to a wealthy man. I wanted to shout at that mother to just stay out of it! She was pushing her children too much and I could see that she would ruin everything for her one daughter in love.
A clueless father was more of a background character and although he clued in to the manipulation of his wife at the end and the level headed ability of his daughter Liza. It frustrated me that Liza seemed to be invisible to her dad regarding her work at the law firm.
Liza and Will had real chemistry from the beginning, taking the story from hate to friendship Liza didn’t seem able to know who to trust or who was telling the truth. This story had many unpleasant side notes, bullying not only by piers but by those in authority and how Liza handled those situations was epic. I wish I had the ability to stand up for myself like this character did. Gossip was another side venue which can ruin not only relationships but can cause a person to lose their jobs or their standing in a community; gossip is also another form of bullying.
I enjoyed reading this book one cozy afternoon, in front of a fire sipping tea. Hmm, hmm good!
So many things going on in the story and it is a lovely read.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve never read Pride and Prejudice and I’ve never really seen any adaptations but some how this retelling felt familiar like slipping a comfortable pair of shoes on.

As a prolific romance reader I’ve always thought I should read P&P. I think of it as the OG romance novel. But if the old fashioned views of Mrs Bennet in this book made me grit my teeth how would the original make me feel? Maybe ignorance is bliss?

There was a couple of romances devolving throughout this book and I really enjoyed being a spectator to them both. Despite Mrs Bennett’s interfering her girls’ romances actually developed really organically with a few bumps in the road which only made the outcome sweeter.

Will was a great character. I’d read the heck out of a book from his POV as it was I loved the glimpses of his psyche we were treated to through text messages and him finally being forthcoming.

I picked this book up for the sensational cover and stayed for the cute story. I’d have loved Will and Liza to face off in court for reals I have to say. I loved how this book was light-hearted and frustrating and sweet and serious at the same time.

4.5/5 Give me all the P&P retellings! I love them so much! Now, add in some law and it’s perfect! I’m not a lawyer, and have taken one business law class, but I love all the law shows and learning about the justice system.

Pride and Prejudicial is about Liza Bennet, a new lawyer, with the dream of taking over her father’s law firm. When Liza goes back home to visit, her mother has set up her annual get together. There she meets the handsome lawyer, Will Darcy. Too bad he is arrogant and rude. Liza vows to stay away from him, but when her father’s form is in danger, it will be Darcy that steps in.

This was such a great retelling! I loved the modern twist and the new look on all the characters. Mr. Collins was definitely the best! Everyone should read it just for his character. But really, all the characters were great! They had traits of the original, but a personality of their own. I really loved them all!

Basically, if you are a fan of retellings and Jane Austen, I would give this one a try. It was truly a fun book and I really loved the addition of law to the story line.

This is a light-hearted, funny and engaging modern P & P variation. Liza (EB) lives with her sister Jane and Lily (Lydia) with her parents. Mr Bennet is lawyer and partner of a struggling law firm with an old Mr Collins. Mrs Bennet is a charitable, conniving mother. The story pretty much started with Mrs Bennet holding a charity fund-raiser. Liza and Cher (Charlotte) did a dance performance , with Liza picking on Will (FD). Then they met again an that's when the story took off.

Love the modern Liza, she was smart as always, funny , forward and direct. Will was brooding as always. The rest of the characters were protrayed as close to the original. This story was enjoyable. highly recommend to P & P fans

It is a truth universally acknowledged that this is a wonderful, modern day re-telling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Set in the US, Liza Bennett and Will Darcy are lawyers. Liza is working to save her fathers law firm, Bennett & Collins. Will Darcy comes into her life in the usual way, as a friend of Charlie Bingham.

All of the parallels between the original story and this book are there: the awkward Mr (Colin) Collins, Liza’s best friend Cher Lucas and even the great Catherine DeBourgh turns up as a federal judge.

Knowing how the story will play out doesn’t affect your enjoyment of it. It’s witty, funny and the final scene where Will declares his love for Liza is wonderful. A great read.

A comedic yet emotional retelling of Pride & Prejudice...

Pride & Prejudicial is a must-read modern retelling of Pride & Prejudice. I was laughing while reading and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next between Liza Bennett and Will Darcy. This is still an emotional story as well since it does follow the "dislike, tolerate, love" them. You have to read about the birds, you don't want to miss it.

Anyone who loves Pride and Prejudice will read and watch every version found. This is a great contemporary version with Liza a law student studying for the bar in an attempt to save her family's failing law firm. Will Darcy is also a lawyer from a rich family who doesn't have the best interpersonal skills even though he has a warm heart. There is the usual snobbery, new misunderstandings and settings for the telling of the great story.

I received an ARC in exchange for a review in full disclosure.

I enjoyed this particular retelling of Pride and Prejudice. It was lighthearted, fun, and read quickly. The characters were well-developed. She does a really excellent job with the romantic suspense of the book, and has the reader on the edge of the seat in anticipation of when the characters will see each other again.

It could have done with one more run-through for edits and some continuity errors, but overall it was entertaining. I think if you’ve read Pride and Prejudice it’s a very enjoyable read, but a bit confusing if you haven’t read it before.

Pride & Prejudice is my favorite movie (because I have yet to read the book), so I can be a bit picky with retellings. Danica Dawn did not disappoint and did an amazing job of modernizing it. I loved it. I loved how strong-minded Liza was and Darcy was still sexy. It worked perfectly and didn't mess with the original story too much since she follows the same guideline and just switched it to modern times.

This was my first read by this author, but I'll be keeping her on my watchlist.

I received a free copy for an honest review. I have to say, this is one of the better modernized retellings of Pride & Prejudice. Liza was a spitfire and this Darcy was a bit more talkative and charming than most. I was so engrossed in the pages, I lost track of time. I kind of wished it was longer or had an epilogue or something. I didn’t want it to end. It could use one more round of editing for those silly grammar errors (there’s not many though). I would recommend this to anyone who loves P&P or needs a good chuckle.

Well written, well thought plot, Pride & prejudicial cleverly follows the plot of the original book.
It shows, doesn’t tell, which is a welcome change from most of the P&P variations. Three stars because it still lacked a little bit of emotions for my taste.
