One Summer in Italy

Rate this book
Reeda Summer is running from a troubled marriage and a truth she can't face.

When the Summer sisters discover their grandmother's journals after her death, they unlock a mystery that shakes their family to the core. Who is Charlie Jackson? Is he their grandfather? And if so, what happened to him?

Reeda leaves the Waratah Inn and returns to Sydney, her husband, and her thriving interior design business, only to find her marriage in tatters. She's lost sight of what she wants in life and can't recognise the person she's become.

Instead of facing her problems, Reeda embarks on a journey to discover more about the grandfather she never knew, leaving her troubles behind her.

Her search takes her to Italy, where a trail of clues leads her across the country with few answers to satisfy her burning curiosity about the past. And instead of helping her to forget, her pilgrimage reminds her of everything she loves and what she's left behind.

Under the Italian sky, Reeda discovers that the joy she was searching for was hidden inside her all along. And instead of running from her problems, she embraces the healing she needs to face them.

The 2nd book in the Waratah Inn series is sooo good. It definitely pulls you in and makes you feel like you are a part of the story. You can't help but share Reeda's feelings and as the oldest of the Summer sisters there are definitely some feelings that need to be explored and worked on. Follow her on her trip to Italy where she goes to find the biological grandfather none of them knew existed. Along the way she finds her way back to the love she thought she had lost. Another book in this series you will not want to put down. Highly recommend!!

A well written women's fiction series, this the second book and story of Reeda and Duncan, trying to resolve their marital issues, also the continuation of Charlie's life/death(?). The characters are well developed, the continuity is good and is beautifully written in the scenery of Italy. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Reeda is the oldest of 3 Summer sisters. When their parents die in an automobile accident, Reeda feels responsible because they had taken her to a dance performance contest. The sisters went to live with their grandparents at their B&B Waratah Inn. In the first book in the series the sisters returned to the inn when their grandmother "Nan" died and found they were the new owners of the Inn. They spent a year refurbishing the Inn and getting reacquainted with each other. After that year, Reeda returns to Sidney to her Interior design business and her husband only to find out that her business was running quite nicely without her and her husband thinks they are at the end of their marriage. In their efforts to remodel the Inn they found some old journals that Nan had kept for years and in reading those they discovered that Pop was not Nan's first love and that their Dad was not Pop's biological son. But they also found information about a man named Charlie Jackson who never returned from WWII and that he had been in Italy before he disappeared. So Reeda decided she wanted to find her grandfather or what had happened to him. Her journey takes her to Rome and then on to several small communities and this his her journey of discovery. Not just her grandfather but also a discovery of herself and her ability to go it alone. Not because that's her desire but what her husband evidently wants. This is a terrific story and I enjoyed every minute of it. and I can't wait for the release of book 3.

One Summer in Italy: The Waratah Inn Book two is by Lily Millen. This second book in this series is absolutely wonderful. Who wouldn’t want to visit the unexplored Italy? The book takes us from Australia to Italy along with Reeda and her questioning of her relationship with Duncan. She is also looking for some trace of her biological grandfather, Charlie Jackson. Charlie was shot down over Sicily during World War II. He was never heard from again and no one in the family knew what happened to him, not even the love of his life, Edie (Nan). Edie went on to marry Paul Summer and to bring up Charlie’s son Keith, although Keith knew nothing of Charlie. When Keith and his wife were killed in a car accident, their three daughters were brought up by Nan and Paul. Reeda has never forgiven herself for insisting they go to the recital that night. She did well in the recital and won a trophy of which her parents were so proud of her for. However, she was the only survivor that night and even her sisters blamed her for the accident. After all, if it hadn’t been for Reeda, they would have been home. The sisters grew apart as they lived their lives until Nan’s death brought them back together at the Waratah Inn. Now that they are back together, it seems that Reeda’s life is falling apart. Can she fix it or does she even want to?

I enjoyed this second book in the Waratah Inn series. In this book we learn about Reeda, who travels to Italy by herself, driven by an insatiable desire to learn more about her family's mystery as well as escape the tensions in her life. Interestingly, the more answers she uncovers, the more questions she finds. And could it be that the most valuable clue she finds has resided within herself all this time? Can she continue striving for something she doesn't have, or will she finally find fulfillment and satisfaction in that which she already has? An interesting and insightful story! I loved that the h wasn't just explained away as being moody, angry, etc., but that the reader is given insight into her reasons for thinking/believing/reasoning. The descriptions of not only Australia but also Italy were wonderful--like having a personal tour guide! I highly recommend this book.
I can't wait for the next book in this series as we continue in the mystery as well as find out more about Bindi! I received a complimentary ARC of this book and have voluntarily given my honest opinion in this review.

A poignant, insightful story

This is a wonderful series that combines WWII history, a family’s struggle to overcome a difficult past and a mystery. There are rich descriptions of Australia and Italy. The story jumps around between different places and time periods, but it is nicely organized and easy to follow. Dates and locations are clearly marked.

This book is eldest sister Reeda’s story. By outward appearances, she has it all; she’s beautiful, has a handsome, successful husband, a lovely home and a thriving business. But she is miserable, stressed, depressed, angry and lost. Reeds’s biggest problem is herself. By not telling anyone how she feels, she is stuck in her own thoughts, never getting another point of view. She goes to Italy to find out what happened to Charlie and finds so much more. It shows the need for forgiveness, communication, perspective, adaptation and acceptance.

One Summer in Italy ( The Waratah Inn Book 2 )
By: Lilly Mirren
One Summer in Italy is book two in The Waratah Inn Series. This series is wonderful. You will need to read the first book in order to know what is going on with the three Summer sisters. I was grabbed at the start and did not want to put it down. The sister discover their grandmother’s journal and learn some things they did not know. Who is Charlie Jackson ? Reeda’s marriage is not what it should be. She wants questions about Charlie. Would a trip to Italy give her answers? Love this series and it keeps getting better . I was on the edge of my seat trying to read faster to see what was going to happen next.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book, but was not told that I had to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Total escapism.

This wonderful story is total escapism from the outside world.
Following on from The Waratah Inn, this book focuses on the eldest sister Reena. The relationship with her husband is becoming strained, and she heads to Italy to trace her biological grandfather who disappeared during World War II.
The book is a multi timeline, mostly told through a series of journals and old letters, and is set in coastal New South Wales as well as Italy.
I have come to know and love all of the main characters, and am looking forward to reading more in this fabulous series.
So well written and researched, the story had me hooked from beginning to end, and is highly recommended.

Love in Different Eras
This is book 2 in a wonderful series of Women's Fiction. While this book could stand alone, it is so much better read in order. This story is written so well that I feel I know these people. So much of what these characters are going through can match my own life. I have found that I have become emotionally involved in these books. The author's descriptions make it easy for the reader to be in the book with the characters and live and feel right along with them. Awesome writing! This is a great story that touches me deeply. The author gave me an ARC of this book for free and this is my honest review.

Having covered Kate's story in the first book we now come to Reeda's story. Her marriage is struggling so she takes the opportunity to travel to Italy to investigate further what happened to her grandfather, who was shot down during WW2 but whose fate is unknown. Travelling around Italy on her own gives her the opportunity to reflect on her own life and marriage.
If you prefer books with loads of action or feel good romance (nothing wrong with that, I love those myself) this might not be for you, however for a thoughtful book flitting between eras this is an excellent example.

Reeda is the oldest she has lots of guilt over her parents death and her marriage is not doing well and after she learns her grandmother secret she wonders who she is and who was her grandfather. But after returning to Sydney she finds things haven't gotten any better her marriage is almost over and even her business doesn't need her. So she decides to see if she can find anything out about Charlie Jackson but she will have to go to Italy to find out anything. What will she find and what dose her future hold. I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.

One Summer in Italy stands on its own but it is the second book in the saga of these women's lives. I am a bit behind with my chores as I could not stop reading once I started! This book is Reeda's journey to self awareness as she travels to Italy looking for clues in her grandfather's life after he was declared MIA in WWII. I am looking forward to the next book. This is compelling women's fiction.

Rheeda is running. Her marriage is going to pot. She was tired of trying so hard to have a baby. After reading her grandmother's journal she decided to run off to Italy to try to find out what happened to her biological grandfather they never knew about. The storyline and characters are very good. Lily has written a very interesting book. It has lots of twists and turns. I recommend this book to all who like good clean reading.

Reeda is the eldest sister in the Summer family, and this is her story. After discovering the sisters have a grandfather they never knew, Reeda goes to Italy to find out what happened to him after WWII. Reeda's life is spiraling, and she needs an outlet. But, after finding only a little more about her grandfather, Reeda discovers more about herself as well. I loved the story and the vivid writing kept me turning pages.

The theme of this story is really good. A granddaughter is searching for the Grandfather she didn't know she had until recently. He was supposedly killed in WW2, however, the jumping back and forth in time was just too much. 1943 to 1996 to 1945 to 1981 to 1943 to 1983 to 1953 to 1996....just to much. Just as you read one chapter in one year with certain characters, the next chapter jumps to another time with other characters and the reader constantly has to shift their mindset. While Reeda was looking in the current time for evidence of what happened to her grandfather, every other chapter was about Charlie and what he went through while a pilot in WW2 and every third chapter was about Edith and what she was doing while Charlie was MIA and then a chapter of what was going on with Reeda and her sisters in present time, then back to Charlie, then back to Edith and so on.

When Reeda was in Rome and other locations, there was just to much socializing about food, culture, people etc that had nothing to do with the story and it kind of rambled on in those cases. I scrolled past a lot of it.

Usually, I enjoy this type of genre but this one was too jumbled. Maybe if 2 chapters in a row were in the same year it would have been easier to read. It was hard to determine who the characters were and their relation to each other until later in the book.

The worst part - after sticking with all the "confusion"...the book ends without finishing the main storyline - What happened to Charlie Jackson - Reeda's grandfather? That is when you find out it is a series book...you have to buy the next book to see how book 1 ends! And so many possible endings going through my mind...did he die a POW, or did he escape and something happened that he got amnesia so he didn't know to go home, or did he survive and went home only to see Edith, the love of his life, remarried with a child and he didn't want to disrupt that so he goes back to Italy to live his life out? And that is assuming Book 2 tells the ending and not Book 3. This is why I hate "books" and will only get them if I can get the whole box set at one time.

Review:

This is a beautiful uplifting story about finding yourself and second chances. The book is nicely written, very vivid and captivating. The characters are interesting and nice people their actions are explained well this made them realistic. The story is told over two different time periods and set in both Italy and Australia the changes in time and place are marked clearly and flow well and nicely wrap up together at the end. Overall a wonderful story with nice characters, a great relaxing read.

Reeda Summer is suffering from discontent, especially in her marriage. After helping her two sisters renovate their Grandmother's Inn, she returns to Sydney. Her husband, Duncan, seems to be more and more distant with each day. Their unsuccessful attempts to have a child have driven them apart and Reeda isn't sure if they can salvage their marriage.

Upon the death of the sisters' Grandmother, they find out that the man they thought was their grandfather really wasn't their grandfather. Instead, their father was conceived right before WWII and their real grandfather, Charlie Jackson, was (supposedly) killed when his plane was shot down over Italy.

Reeda decides to travel to Italy, both to try to find out the truth of Charlie's demise and to figure out what to do about her life. The book follows Reeda's discoveries in Italy and also tells the story of Nan and Charlie's lives through letters and journal entries. There was quite a bit of WWII history and I was intrigued by the tales of Charlie's life during this time.

The author does a good job in describing the journeys of the characters and even though the story jumps around a lot, the times and places are well marked throughout the book. My only complaint about the book is that it ends without resolution for any of the storylines. I hope that the subsequent books will resolve the cliffhangers that this one had.

The narrator does a good job and keeps the story moving at a pleasant pace. I was given the chance to listen to the audiobook version of this book by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review i

One Summer in Italy takes us away with the oldest of the Summer Sisters. Reeda is married and wants to have a baby. But things don't always come as planned, and the strain on her marriage has caused some stress. To refresh and think things through, she embarks on a trip to Italy to try and find her biological grandfather. The imagery in this story is so beautiful, it's like we are there with her, learning and enjoying the fruits of the country. The book is masterfully written in two timelines, from the diary of the Summer sisters grandmother during World War II and the current time of Reeda coming to terms with her own life. We do get back to The Waratah Inn which is like coming home. I am enjoying this series. The idea of learning your family history through the words of a family member is enticing and I love the way the girls are embracing their heritage. I can't wait for book 3!

Brigid Lohrey gives a wonderful performance, giving us all the acccents! From Aussie to Italian, she brings all the characters to life and lets us see the story in our minds., It's a great beach summer escape to listen to.

This book centers on Reeda, of the three sisters. Her marriage is in a state of estrangement and she is struggling with much confusion and disappointment. Reeda takes a trip to Italy to explore the disappearance of her biological grandfather from WW2. She also is searching for a sense of herself.
These books are nicely written. This one, as the first, alternates from the present, the setting being the mid-1990s, to the past, WW2 era, as relayed through the deceased grandmother's journals. This gives an interesting twist on the narration. Italian culture is invitingly depicted. The emotional depth of characters is adequately described.
Of course, being a series, the book leaves the reader wanting the next one, which will be focused on Bindi, the youngest sister.
These are not romance novels, although there is a relationship aspect, in this book, the troubled marriage and infertility issues.
An aside: I want to find a place to purchase waratah seeds and grow the plant. The unique flowers look gorgeous!

Another great book in this series. This book focuses on Reeda, the oldest of the three. She is having marital problems.

She and her husband are desperate to have a child. So much so she purchases multiple pregnancy test kits every month and keeps testing. She gets depressed when she finds all the tests are negative. She and her husband stress over it, and their marriage is in danger. Reeda has read her grandmother's journal, and realizes that Paul, Evie's husband, was not their biological grandfather. Charlie was her father Keith's biological dad. Charlie was in the Australian Air Force, and his plane was shot down. He was a WWII prisoner in Italy. The was no official word of his death--he just never came home. Reeda decides to go to Italy to look for him. Interesting what she finds out on her trip. Hard to put down.

I liked this well enough that I would be interested in reading book #1 as well as the rest of the series. This takes place in Australia, with a portion of this book in Italy. The last name of the main characters is "Summer" so there's a bit of play in the title. This series features 3 sisters, mostly raised by their grandmother due to the death of the parents at a young age. This particular book deals with Reeda and her husband Duncan and their desire/frustration at having children and the ramifications of that struggle. There is a lot of back and forth between chapters with present day and past as the story unfolds which is why I gave it a 4star rating; sometimes it was hard to keep track of which part of the story I was in.
