Hardcover with glossy dust jacket.1997 211p. 7.30x7.25x0.90 BOOK ABOUT FIRST LADIES PORTRAITS, HISTORY, ANECDOTES, MOTHERS, DAUGHTERS,MISTRESSES, ENTERTAINERS AND MORE.
Very fast read. Each woman gets a page or so, and this isn't limited to presidents' wives, either ~ their mistresses, daughters, and nieces all make appearances, as well. It was fun reading about Dolly Madison, Marilyn Monroe, Bianca Jagger, and Alice Roosevelt just as much as it was reading about Jackie O and Martha Washington.
I think the thing I liked the most was learning about the little-known presidents as well as the greats. For instance, Buchanan was a confirmed bachelor whose "first lady" was his niece, and rumors of homosexuality swirled around his presidency. WTF? I have to find out more about that!
An irreverent look at US history you won't likely learn in school. This book just might change your mind about what you think went on in the White House!
This is a fun simple book full interesting little tidbits about various women who have been associated with the white house. Not simply first ladies and mistresses. great bed time reading.
Although often funny and interesting there seemed way too many first ladies or non first ladies written about. Also treated an important subject with a sense of triviality. It did not take long to read and for that I am grateful.
