Of all the accusations Gregory, Duke of Halstead, has ever had leveled at him, this is perhaps the most offensive and the least accurate. But as he has just woken naked in bed with no memory of the night before, next to a beautiful stranger, perhaps it's time to reevaluate!
Innocent Prudence is just as shocked when she awakens! But as these strangers begin to unravel the plot behind the scandalous circumstances, she discovers the delicious consequences of finding herself in bed with…a duke!
I've been published by Mills & Boon since 2007..but I'd been making up stories in my head for as long as I can remember. It was a long walk home from school, and there were no ipods in those days to keep you amused! When I wasn't daydreaming, I had my nose stuck in a book. My parents used to take me to the library every Saturday, until I was old enough to get there on my own, and my house was always full of books.
During school holidays, the whole family loved to visit stately homes and castles. As soon as we got home, my older sister and I would either dress up as lords and ladies, and romp around the garden, or, if it was raining, retreat to our bedroom where we would draw intricately detailed plans of our very own imaginary stately home, complete with secret tunnels, dungeons, and usually, a maze in the extensive grounds.
When I was old enough to go to university, I studied English literature, with Philosophy. I was not sure what I wanted to do after that, but meeting a handsome student of maths, who was the owner of a very powerful motorbike helped me make up my mind. Reader, I married him.
For many years I felt it was important to stay at home to raise our two children, but one day, when the youngest had gone to senior school, I began to wonder if all those stories I made up to occupy my mind whilst attending to mundane chores, would interest anyone else.
I started to write some of them down, and eventually decided that one of them was "deep" enough to merit attention from publishers. It took me almost two years to complete, mainly because I kept tearing it up and starting all over again. And having to keep going out to work to help pay for school fees, then university tuition, slowed progress down as well.
Needless to say, this masterpiece was rejected by every single publisher I sent it to, but by this time, writing had become an addiction.
Four more stories got rejected, before Mills & Boon bought "His Cinderella Bride", a regency romance.
I do have some other interests, besides writing! I love spending time pottering in my garden. And recently I've taken up ballroom dancing as a way to try and keep fit (and keep the romance alive in my marriage!)
The premise of In Bed With the Duke - two complete strangers wake up in bed together and have no idea how they got there – is one I liked the sound of, and I was looking forward to finding out what happened and what they were going to do next. There’s a mystery to be solved, the hero is a duke in disguise, the heroine is the victim of a plot to steal her inheritance… but even though the book is well-written and the central characters are engaging, there’s something missing I can’t quite put my finger on and the story as a whole just doesn’t gel.
Gregory Willingale has spent almost his entire life being dutiful and responsible. A widower of some years, he was married at seventeen to a young woman who didn’t love him and wasted no time in cuckolding him, so he is wary of emotional entanglements and suspicious of women and their motivations. When he awakens next to a rather lovely, very naked young woman with no memory of how either of them got there, while another woman harangues him and accuses him of being a “vile seducer of women!”, he is furious and immediately jumps to the conclusion that he is the victim of a plot to entrap him into marriage.
Wanting nothing more than to be on his way, Gregory hastens the young woman from his room, but when he later discovers that she has been abandoned by her relatives, his protective instincts won’t allow him to leave her to fend for herself. He tells her that he will take her somewhere safe – to the house where his aunt lives – and then work out what to do next. She has no alternative, and agrees to go with him, realising that in spite of his earlier anger and his brusque manner, he is a gentleman and will not harm her.
Miss Prudence Carstairs has lived much of her life with her aunt because her mother died when she was young, and her father, an army officer, quite rightly thought that a life following the drum was no life for a young girl. Aunt Charity – who isn’t at all charitable! – took her in begrudgingly and has always belittled her and insisted on squashing Prudence’s vivacity and spirit. Lately remarried to a man Prudence dislikes, her aunt has been trying to marry her off against her will in order, Prudence suspects, to get her hands on her inheritance.
As Gregory and Prudence travel together, they begin to piece together the events of the previous day and night. At first, Gregory suspects that someone called Hugo must be behind the prank as a way of causing him (Gregory) to lose a wager, but they gradually work out that they had both been drugged and that Prudence was deliberately placed in Gregory’s bed, most probably by Aunt Charity and her new husband – but for what purpose?
Even though their journey only takes a few days, it’s not a particularly comfortable one after they are robbed and have to make their way on foot. They end up having to sleep in a barn, Gregory has to do some manual labour to pay their way and they have a long day and night’s walk in order to reach their destination – which Prudence is astonished to discover is much grander than the simple country cottage she had been imagining. And when they do reach safety, Gregory is faced with the prospect of having to confess his true identity to Prudence – that he is in fact the Duke of Halstead and not plain Mr Willingale at all.
Gregory is a rather sweet beta-hero whose backstory provides strong reasons for his actions during the course of the book. He is unfailingly solicitous of Prudence’s welfare and protective of her, even when she accuses him of trying to control her or of being after her inheritance. She is quick to judge him, it’s true, but is just as quick to admit when she’s wrong about him and to realise he’s trying to do what’s best for her. They work well as a couple – her vivacity loosens him up a bit – and I enjoyed their interactions, but their relationship evolves at lightning speed and I didn’t really feel a strong connection between them.
The biggest problem I have with the book is that the title gives away Gregory’s identity immediately, whereas he doesn’t reveal it to Prudence, make her aware of his motivations for not telling her or his reasons for travelling incognito until the last quarter of the story. I can’t help feeling the book as a whole would have worked better had I not been aware of his identity either, because then I might have been able to feel more sympathy for Prudence when she finds out. As it stands, her reaction feels forced and contrived simply to introduce some uncertainty into the last portion of the story.
In Bed With a Duke isn’t the best of Ms Burrows’ books, and while I’ve certainly read worse, I’m afraid I can’t recommend it. It’s a pleasant, undemanding read, but there’s nothing especially memorable about it, and the romance moves too quickly to be really convincing.
To simply wake up every morning a better person than when I went to bed. - Sidney Poitier
Two unlikely lovers - a soldier's daughter and a disheveled traveler - find themselves in bed together at a posting inn, not remembering how they came to be naked with the other. Mayhem breaks out and Prudence's aunt abandons her at the inn. Yet the stranger from her bed carries her away from the scene. Thus starts a journey of the heart for Prudence and Gregory.
IN THE BED WITH A DUKE starts off with madcap comedy of Prudence and Gregory unexpectedly finding themselves dazed and confused as a series of guests rubber neck their way through the hall outside their room. The tone turns slightly dark as Prudence realizes she is helpless until her mystery man turned white knight comes shining through to give her a new lease on life.
I appreciated Burrows' details in bringing Regency England to life in the opening scene, spotlighting the prejudices against "fallen" women and the chivalry of the nobility. Burrows gives our hero and heroine an adventure that allows the to discover the identity of the other while understanding their own nature. Burrows offered witty banter and authentic characters to create a sweet and satisfying romance.
Recommended read for fans of Regency romance and class conflicts.
I received a print copy from the author for an honest review.
So this one was a little out of my usual reading range but I was shelving it and couldn't get the premise out of my head. That'll teach me for reading book blurbs when shelving! Anyway...
There's a reason I usually avoid romances. I'm can't handle the complete lack of logic. Now, down't get me wrong, I can handle all types of fantasy and science fiction so long as the world (and characters) follow some kind of logic.
The book was completely historically inaccurate and the characters fell in love over the course of what seemed like a day and also seemed mostly physical and yet they get married. This is my problem with romances.
Despite this I still got swept away in the whole ridiculous thing. It was an easy and quick read. It hasn't got me into reading romance but it has got me into reading some steamy fanfiction!
A new author to me and one I think I’ll follow up.
Great initial premise and an engaging story. Sadly it was spoiled by 2 things. Firstly, the title gave away the fact that Gregory was a Duke and meant I was so used to that fact that I thought Prudence’s response was totally over-the-top and disproportionate. It introduced a level of conflict that felt false to me and made me dislike Prudence. Secondly, the ending where the revolting Aunt was forgiven by the annoying Prudence. Yuck! Why bother? I wanted an ending with Prudence and Gregory happily married with family etc - not to have the awful Aunt brought back into the fold. Well written and generally an entertaining read!

Loved the beginning and the set up, loved the cross country run, loved the final outcome... a great story, worth the read, and a little 'light reading' if you need a break from the stress of life to escape into the problems of someone else, with a happy ending and a twist! xx
The author weaves a great story. She builds on the story with interesting characters, fresh and different plots and lively dialog. The author is one I and you will continue to enjoy.
It started off promising in fact it remained interesting till they arrive at the dukes residence from then in the story doesn't gel well. To much is improbable and unnecessarily drawn out.
Sparkling, witty and absolutely delightful, In Bed with the Duke is the latest captivating tale from the queen of Regency romantic comedy, Annie Burrows.
When Gregory, Duke of Halstead, bedded down for the night in a grimy inn, he never expected to wake up naked in bed with a virginal beauty and end up being accused as a seducer of innocents by her scheming aunt! Gregory is damned if he is going to have his integrity compromised by a hysterical woman and he loses no time in throwing everyone - including the seductive girl in his bed whose body is now imprinted on his mind! - out of his room and hopefully out of his life for good. However, it seems that fate has got other plans in store for him and his unexpected bedfellow!
Ever since her Aunt Charity remarried, Prudence Carstairs' life has gone from bed to worse. Constantly punished for the smallest of misdemeanors, Prudence feels her spirit and joie de vivre being eroded every single wretched day she spends in their company. When she awakens one day in bed with a naked stranger, Prudence is flabbergasted and alarmed, however, even she cannot resist sneaking a peek at Gregory's gorgeous naked physique! She may never have met a man as handsome as Gregory, but Prudence is not willing to trap him into marriage, but little does she realise that she's about to be thrust into very close proximity with the man whom she simply cannot stop thinking about!
After rescuing her from an ostler's lascivious hands, Gregory realises that if he leaves Prudence alone, there is no telling what kind of scrapes she will get herself into. Taking her under his wing, Gregory is determined to get Prudence as far away from her wily aunt and crafty husband as he possibly can. However, the one thing he hadn't counted on was on falling head over heels in love with his seductive charge!
As mutual attraction gives way to a passion that simply cannot be denied, Gregory and Prudence quickly find themselves giving into temptation and succumbing to pleasure, but with dangerous secrets and shocking scandals standing in their way, does their burgeoning love stand a chance of surviving? Or are they destined to spend the rest of their life condemned to a lifetime of regret?
Annie Burrows effortlessly blends wit, heart, passion and pathos in irresistible stories which historical romance readers find absolutely impossible to resist and In Bed with the Duke is the latest in a long line of fantastic Regency romances readers will find themselves unable to put down. Deftly juggling laugh-out humour and hilarious repartee with searing emotional drama and red-hot romance, In Bed with the Duke is a stellar tale of hope, second chances, courage and the healing power of love that has got keeper written all over it!
Wonderfully written, uplifting and outstanding from start to finish, In Bed with the Duke is another must-read by Annie Burrows!
Ms. Burrows writes her romances with tongue in cheek and a definite sense of humor. This novel starts where most romances end—with the leading lord and lady in bed together. So how did that happen?
Therein lies a tale and quite a saucy and funny tale it is too. Having both been drugged for unknown and nefarious reasons, Prudence and Gregory embark on a road trip that involves a foul-tempered nag, a conniving aunt, a greedy uncle, suspicious tavern keepers, lecherous fops, an angry, gun-toting, bickering farmer and his wife, theft, secret identities and so much more. If it sounds improbable, the two are well aware of it. But that makes it a truly ripping yarn.
Another aspect of Ms. Burrows’s novels are the inherent misunderstandings that arise from mistaken impressions, silences and misinterpretation of other people’s moods. Just because you’ve got the hots for someone doesn’t mean you know what’s going on in your significant other’s mind and Ms. Burrows is well aware of this. Because Prudence gets unnerved by the revelation of Gregory’s real social status, marriage gets proposed, withdrawn, awkwardly handled and refused in such dizzying succession, you wonder if these two will actually make it to the altar.
The novel manages to amuse and titillate in equal measure as the unlikely bedfellows argue and battle their way to understanding and into marriage. It’s good stuff and shows that there’s more to romance than automatic sexual heat.
3.5 rounding up to four. Is there a name for the "waking up naked in bed with someone and having no recollection of how you got there" trope? Because this is one of them. It's always struck me as a rather unbelievable premise for a book, but given that, I do think it was well executed here. I never did understand how he got drugged. I liked both the hero and the heroine, though, and more importantly I liked them together. They're going to have to learn how to deal with each other, and that is realistic, and not something often portrayed in romance novels. It's too often seen as true love erases all the coping mechanisms and learned behaviors you've accumulated over your life, but that isn't real, and that's shown here. And a very nice and sweet ending.
Loved the beginning of the book!! Admit it is a favorite (read Lord Ruin by Carolyn Jewel if you haven't & always looking for recs). Great attention to detail, you can feel the h/h's confusion and later embarrassment. The hero acts differently than I would expect. It is explained later in the book but at the time it tossed me out of the story a bit and I wondered if I missed something.
The h/h spend way too much time bickering. It felt like page filler at times. And I hated what happened with the aunt at the end.
Overall entertaining read and would read her again.
This was an enjoyable and entertaining romance that had a wonderful hero and heroine and I found myself immersed so much that I couldn't put it down. Prudence was a delightful heroine and Gregory a hero that any woman would love to come to her rescue. I enjoyed how Prudence stood up to her Duke and how she won him over. Would have liked to see the villain get his comeuppance at the end but it was enough to know that her Aunt at least did. This was a thoroughly enjoyable romance that I heartily recommend.
4.5 stars. I'm giving this a book such a high rating because of the wonderful way it was written and the excellent character development - also because it felt very authentic to the time period (and many Historical romances aren't these days) There was a nice simmering build up to the romance right throughout and I really didn't want to put this book down until the end. The story kept me engaged 100%. Good job !
The was definitely a book of two halves. The first, where Gregory and Prudence were found together was interesting and amusing. As was their journey together but it was over too soon when they arrived at the family home.
While I liked Gregory's family, Prudence's circumstances were too neatly tied up and the change in their feelings for one another went up another level without really knowing one another that much better.
"Burrows is a master at Regency romance. Her novels are always full of brooding heroes and feisty heroines, and this is no exception. Readers will be drawn in by the authentic setting, enigmatic characters and the numerous misadventures the couple has on the way to true love" (4 stars @ RT Book Reviews).
I started reading this, thinking I'd stay up a bit late and read the rest in the morning. Now, it's 2 am and I just finished it. The novel was well-paced, and I enjoyed both main characters. Overall, I have no complaints aside from losing a few hours of sleep. I might have to re-read this one some day.
I was provided this book for free by a Goodreads GiveAway.
A fun, sweet, fluffy romance :) The characterization was occasionally formulaic, but not enough to spoil the experience. I do believe I'll read more from this author.
Gregory and Prudence's adventures were a fun read. As soon as they reached Gregory's family, the story turned from fun to silly. Their bickering due to forgetting what they learned of each other went on too long.
It wasn't a bad book and a nice easy read I did struggle to stomach the hero's totally character change but I liked the heroines strength. All the fuss at the end about not being good enough to be a duchess was a little much
A fun and short read. Love the witty dialogues between Prudence and Gregory. The irony of her thinking he's marrying her for her 'fortune' haha..."Ten thousand pounds" inheritance. .."Per year?" "That's it." The duke bets $10k on a turn of a card at his club! lol
When Gregory and Prudence wake up in the same bed, both suspect the other of ill intent. The resulting road trip reminded me of the classic Clark Gable film:"It Happened One Night."
