Today I'm reviewing The Astrology of Love & Sex, a Modern Compatibility Guide by Annabel Gat. Illustrations by Jess Rotter.

Release Date July 30, 2019

Generally I like to start out with a disclaimer. I am an contemporary witch. I look for the connection between magic and science without the need to search for a creator. I receive no compensation for these reviews and all my links are standard Amazon links and not affiliate links. I am a practicing photo reader and have spent the last 16 years honing my craft. I offer personal readings by request and have a strong online history that boasts over 412,000 views.

I'm going to start off with a review of the physical book. In this day and age of e-Books I find that most publishers are skimping on the physical aesthetics of a print book. Most are poorly bound or the pages lack luster. The cover lacks definition and/or color and the art is pitiful. That is NOT the case with this book. This book is stunning. The cover, although only two colors, is delightful. The front is decorated with the illustrative work of Jess Rotter. I snapped a few photos of these images and man, they are fantastic. As an out Lesbian married to a Trans-man I can tell you we do not see enough diversity in some of these books on love and relationships that cross my desk. This one, however, is the exception. I love the way this artist interpreted the signs and represented love across the board in such a way that, in my humble opinion, anyone can connect with. This book is heavy too. A solid book with shiny gilded page ends that make for a wonderful feel. If you are a person who loves to feel a strong book in your hands, this book is for you!

On to the contents!

The author takes us on a journey through each of the signs telling us the ins and outs (pun intended) to hooking up with each. Taking my own sign, the author tell yous about the Piscean at their best and worst. First impressions, flirting and the how each sign can connect with this mystical fish.

I did a quick check of course, comparing the signs of previous lovers and found that the author seems to be able to connect directly to the positive and negative aspects of each sign. Showing exactly how the ebb and flow of love and sex are intertwined.

Cross referencing the signs (Pisces and Virgo then Virgo and Pisces) shows the skill that the author avoids the easy copy and paste here and gives the dirt on working with each sign, from that sign's prospective. My partner and I have been together 17 years and this book was dead right on our relationship. For example the author writes:

On the surface, Virgo may not seem as mystical as Pisces, the psychedelic fish, but this is vary from from the truth: Virgos are deep thinkers, profoundly concerned with finding inner truth, which is something these two very much have in common.

That is very much true in this relationship. I loved every aspect of this book. The artwork, the way the author weaves together the lives and loves of the signs. They even include a poly relationship. So amazing to see. I highly recommend this book for anyone who longs to see diversity displayed in all its rainbow glory on the pages of a horoscope book. No more pretending to see people who look like us. This book takes on a magical journey, and we want to go back again and again!

This book is beautiful! The illustrations are a total standout for me; by Jess Rotter. It's a sun sign compatibility book...so if you're familiar with Linda Goodman's Love Signs or any similar compatibility book, this is the same idea. It's just way updated for the times, so it's inclusive and not heteronormative. I enjoy this type of book a lot. It's interesting in the introduction, Gat discusses whether she 'believes in' astrology; and basically concludes that while she doesn't, she finds it a helpful guide. I think most divination systems are like that. I do tend to subscribe to astrology though; and I find it pretty reliable. If that's wishful thinking, or confirmation bias in effect, I'm okay with that. I definitely would recommend this book though; I like the way it's written, and again, it's lovely with beautiful full colour illustrations and bronze edged pages; so it's satisfyingly pretty and feels like a special volume.

Literally “a modern compatibility guide,” there is no other compatibility book more inclusive. Apart from being accessible to a readership of diverse romantic and sexual experiences, you don’t have to be an astrologer to decode it. Author and astrologer Annabel Gat amazes me because she translates technically advanced astrology into pop art. Her clear, sharp philosophy and process are fully available in the first chapters, showing her work and encouraging the more astrologically curious to try it at home.

Gat breaks the boundaries of sun sign compatibility, interpreting an entire solar chart to provide a well-rounded, fleshed-out analysis of the compatibility between any two signs. And better yet, the passage for Taurus and Libra is entirely different from the passage for Libra and Taurus! There is not a single sentence that discourages readers from having relationships with certain signs-- an antidote to the toxic, evil, or simply novice ways I see many using astrology today.

Gat makes astrology not only accessible, but enjoyable for a general audience, both in her horoscopes and in The Astrology of Love & Sex, which is written with the same witty and enthusiastic tone. Everyone who sees this book wants to read it-- it is the only book in my library with this effect. The eye-catching, beautiful artwork draws in everyone who crosses its path, and the text keeps them hungry for more. It isn't just a thorough deep dive into sun sign synastry written by a skilled and lighthearted astrologer, it is a well coveted, conversation-starting book.

An interesting relationship guide based on the Greek zodiac. The book is broken up into essentially twelve different parts that correspond to a Zodiac symbol. From there, the reader finds his or her own symbol and then matches it with the symbol of his or her partner.

The book does more than just state the traits and characteristics of the different symbols. It goes on to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the relationships between persons of the same symbol and those of different symbols. The book focuses on how the "couple" would best utilize their private or "love" time together.

For those interested in seeing what kind of relationships exist and how best to use their zodiac symbol's unique characteristics, this book is worth a look.

**I received this book as part of a goodreads giveaway.

This is an amazing book! I took my time reading it because every time I returned to it I found something clever that made me laugh I hadn't noticed before.

It does an amazing job of describing sentimental and sexual proclivities associated with each sign and it feels like you're getting an in-depth psychological look at the essence and preferences of each one. It gives great ideas for how to please a sexual companion and how to make them feel cared for. Reading it you get the sense the author has done a ton of research, and I feel I understand my own sexuality better having read it.

I love how open minded this book is, and how it doesn't kink shame, focus on gender or sexual norms even. This is truly a book for everyone and a treasure for those who are newly interested in astrology and those who have been around the block a few times.

I really loved this book. I find it often hard to actually read "non-fiction guides" and often just use them to reference (which I certainly will be going back to this one as well), but I love Annabel's writing style and approach to the topic so much that I read the entire book. Annabel is insightful while still being accessible. This book also is one of the few astrology books about love and sex that is super queer and polyam friendly. Annabel uses the gender neutral "they" through the entire book, which I so appreciated. I highly recommend for folx who are just getting into astrology and also those who are a bit more seasoned--it's got something for everyone. And the book itself is gorgeous--makes a great gift!

This book is gorgeous, informative, and spot-on when it comes to the wisdom explored, and the dynamics of the different astrological pairings!

As an Aries, Annabel Gat's synopsis of my sign spoke to my soul and made me giggle at how on-the-nose it was.

The good, the bad, and the not-so-ideal aspects of the archetypes are easy to relate to, whether you're new to astrology or an adept. Plus, this is great on-going research for exploring the dynamics between the signs/elements with your current partner, potential partner, or the person you may be interested in pursuing further.

I LOVE the art by Jess Rotter as well. Highly recommend adding this book to your collection!

Good pillow read

This book is excellent if you don't have much knowledge about astrology, or even much of interest in it, as well as for more advance reader. It can feel repetitive in parts, but it's more because of similarities between signs and not lazy copy/paste technique. You can wonder if it's worth your time to read it all, or even have a look how compatible you are with your partner after checking it other way around, and I would say yes it is. My biggest turn off in this book was that most description for more American audience then European o e that I know, but it didn't ruin book for me.

This is a fun gender inclusive and sex positive astrology book on sun sign compatibility. It’s accessible for casual readers and beginner astrologers—no technical language at all. It should be noted that this book is providing interpretations, not teaching you how to do interpretations. Although charming and wry throughout, the format gets a bit repetitive to read straight through. I would recommend reading about each sign and then looking at the pairings relevant to you. Nevertheless, I will definitely go back to look at pairings as they come up in my life just for Gat’s enjoyable and nuanced interpretations.

Annabel Gat's The Astrology of Love & Sex: A Modern Compatibility Guide is a witty, accessible, and refreshingly inclusive look at romantic and sexual dynamics through a cosmic lens. The book ditches rigid gender roles and heteronormative assumptions, providing a candid and modern exploration of zodiac compatibility.
Instead of declaring "good" or "bad" pairings, Gat highlights each pairing's unique strengths and challenges. Her grounded and humorous writing style makes the often-reductive topic both entertaining and informative. It's the perfect guide for anyone, from novices to more seasoned astrology enthusiasts, looking to better understand their love life through the stars.

I gave it a higher rating based on my own personal enjoyment, rather than for its factual accuracy and evidence-based approach. (which it kind of lacks)

I'm not going to rate this book, but I still had a lot of fun reading it. It was a lot of superficial information and I didn't feel like any of it was brand new but it was nice and accessible if you're just curious about astrology.
