For Mito, being the thrall of a vampire is the least of her worries.

Mito's lived life on the streets since she graduated from middle school, dressing as a boy to stay safe. She's managed to eke out a grungy, friendless existence, but when a handsome vampire, Ruka, rescues her from sure-death, he makes her an offer that sounds too good to be become his subservient thrall from which he can feed whenever he wants, and she can live with him—in the boys' dorm. Because her very existence depends on her secret not being found out, every day is a new danger—to say nothing of what living with a vampire could mean! Ruka, not knowing Mito's a girl, dotes on her night and day in an attempt to ripen her "disgusting male blood," but the closer he gets to her, the more likely her secret could get out...and the closer she gets to having her new, wonderful life come crashing down around her...

A heart-pounding, (blood)-thirsty new romance from the award-winning Ema Toyama (Missions of Love, Aoba-kun's Confessions)!

(Thank you Netgalley for an eARC in exchange for a review)

"The world is full of people and not a single one wants me around"

Vampire Dormitory starts its story with Mito, who has been abandoned and lived her life as a boy on the street as a means to stay safe after graduating from middle school. She was then saved by Ruka, a vampire, who took her to reside in the boy's dorm after an indecisive effort to kill herself in exchange for becoming his vampire thrall.

Admittedly, this manga is not in my top tbr list but since Netgalley is open for a request, I thought why not. I can see the traditional murkier manga, complete with cross-dressing and reverse harem themes but make it with vampires. However, I find the plot pretty comical (not in a good way) and add the few corny dialogues, things were pretty cringy.

"Each and every day I will love you to ripen your blood"

Nothing was going on with the manga honestly. The pace was a bit off and everything was with no substance. I was expecting a semi-serious plot but it was meh. The only time I enjoyed reading the manga was when Ren made an appearance or the mangaka's side illustration on the left of the manga

And as usual, ending the manga in a cliffhanger always made me want to jump to the second book but I'm not sure of spending my money on the series since it didn't start with a good foot. I love the art though and I can see this becoming a light and fun anime if it is adapted, but not as reading materials (unless you're in for a silly plot).

I’ll admit that this wasn’t full of substance or serious content. Nope, and that’s why I think I like it so much. It’s vampire fluff and it’s so much fun!! I will also admit that I might have given this five stars if Mito had really been a boy, but that’s neither here nor there. She becomes Ruka’s thrall, which for those of you not in the know is basically a human blood bank. The vampire feeds on said human and don’t suck them dry.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this!! I’m a huge fan of the protective relationship and the two have this going on hardcore. Super cute!! The secretive drama and then Ren thrown in, it’s basically a soap opera. And that is so much fluffy adorable-ness that I can’t stop myself from liking this.

If you’re into serious vampire content, this may not be for you. But if you’re into manga with protective guy/girl relationships with a little vampire thrown in, you will most likely dig this one. I certainly do!!

Thanks so much to NetGalley, Kodansha, and Ema Tōyama for the opportunity to read this for my honest and unbiased opinion!!

A vampire romance with boy love vibes, only it isn't a boy love manga.

Mito is out on the streets. No job, no money, and no place to stay. After being saved by a vampire named Ruka, Mito agrees to be his thrall. Ruka tells Mito that he's been looking for a boy like him for some time now because he won't feed from a woman. Which would be fine except Mito is a woman. She disguises herself as a boy to help her survive being homeless, and now she is too desperate to let him know that she's a girl.

This is an interesting one. It's got some serious boy love vibes but it's not actually a boy love manga. It seems to be making its way to a love triangle manga. I tell you manga and love triangles go hand in hand, and as long as they are done well, I love a good love triangle. The illustrations are gorgeous as well. I really enjoyed it. I will be continuing on with this comic as soon as I can get my hands on the next volume.

Some of the logic doesn't make sense though. So she puts on a wig and transforms into a hot guy? At the end of the manga, it shows that she has a pretty sizeable chest. So even wrapped, those breasts are going to show. Also at the beginning of the manga, she loses her job because she brings in too many women to the owners 'men's' place. Seems to me like most business owners would want to keep an employee that brings in so much business.

I would not recommend this to anyone under the age of 18 due to some nudity. Great for those who like vampire romance stories. This has that added bonus of boy love vibes, but I'm sure that will go away as soon as she is outed.

I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review this book. This does not in any way influence my honest opinion or review.

I received a copy of this manga through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

It was a pretty classic smuttier manga with tropes of cross-dressing and reverse harem (with quite beautiful man specimens)…and…oh yes…vampires.🧛
I like reverse harems and cross-dressing girls in all-boys-school but I find the whole taking in an unloved person to “ripen their blood” amazingly toxic and creepy. It’s basically like grooming someone to take advantage of their vulnerability…and getting a quick burning love story out of it…Uhhh…🙄
Not to mention the mostly light-haired and big-eyed decisively white characters and all the gay-romance part of the book being actually cross-dressing straight love…Yeah, mangas are kinda problematic at times…But at least the boys were attractive, the art pretty and the smut was sort of hot! 😜
In its old lane it was an okay manga but times have changed and some things might need to start keeping up with that! 🙂

*Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.*

*More like 3.5 stars than 3.*

I had really mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, the art was great, the characters were all good-looking, and the main love interests had chemistry, but on the other hand, the whole depiction of the vampire thrall felt exploitative and the circumstances surrounding it felt extremely odd and problematic.

The way the protagonist clearly had a bust but then somehow managed to hide it when pretending to be a boy was entirely unrealistic. I could accept the idea of this vampire hiding in a boy’s dormitory, but I couldn’t suspend belief enough to stretch it to that, especially when the vampire love interest hugged the protagonist and was in close quarters with her many times. It was just impossible that he didn’t realise she was a girl at any point.

Still, the plot was interesting and had some twists, specifically when the character Ren, who I assumed was the second male love interest, entered. So this vol wasn’t without potential or somewhat engaging content, but it did make me feel uncomfortable because of the vampire love slave angle.

It was decent. Kinda reminds me of Twilight only the heroine pretends he's a guy. I am rooting more for the bad boy than the vampire.

2/5 Horny vampire manga but pretty art

Trigger warning for attempt unalive, slight blood, and sexually suggestive content in this manga. Slight spoilers (I didn't include anything that wasn't already mentioned in the synopsis but it is still a bit spoilery for those that don't like to know anything.)

First off, it should be noted that I am not a person that likes romance or sexual stuff for myself so I'm not really one for smutty books but sometimes I find them interesting so I don't mind reading them occasionally. This is definitely for lewd lovers and people who are into the whole cross-dressing troupe which I hate. I don't know why I hate it so much but I do even though I am gender fluid it just sparks anger in me lmao. I think it's probably because of the way they go about it because they always get into some sort of gay relationship but they're lying to their partner so that not very cool. The story was meh, it basically like most shoujos where a girl gets kicked out and has to end up living with a guy because they're in poverty. The art was pretty but it was really weird how she was flat-chested but then had boobs when she would be in a robe which is when you think she'd bind but I don't know lol. The other visual thing that bugged me is that she wears a wig the same hair color just to have shorter hair but she'd lived as a guy for a long time wouldn't she just cut it???

Overall, definitely for those who like lewd content and those who fetishize gay people so not for me (I'm not being homophobic I'm pan just in case it comes across wrong and I like lgbt romances but this is very much for a female audience). I wouldn't pick this up again or buy the next volume but if the publisher posts the next volumes I may pick them up just to review because it was a quick read like Kodansha books usually are and I'm a hoe for free manga lmao.

Disclaimer: I read this arc on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

NOTES WHILE READING:
-I only asked to review this because it's a quick read and from Kodansha so I don't know if I will like it since it's probably horny vampires lmao.
-TW for unalive oof
-Crossdressing troupe :| Also, why is she wearing a wig?? What??
-Don't understand where her boobs go if she isn't wearing a binder/bandages like in the one scene???
-AGAIN WHY DOES SHE WEAR A WIG TO HIDE HER HAIR JUST CUT IT
-This is so weird why

The art is pretty for the most part, but that's about all the praise I have. While Mito's situation is heartbreaking, the story doesn't dwell on her hardships and it feels like it's just there for the story. This is disappointing as Mito's situation could provide an interesting discussion on homelessness and how callous people can be towards homeless individuals, but NOPE! Can't have any of that depressing stuff in our smutty shoujo romance! Let's just throw her into a dorm bursting with "hot" guys and move on!

On the subject of the pretty boys readers have met so far, this is purely subjective but I don't find them that attractive. Since I predominantly read shounen action series (that also happen to have pretty boys), I've grown so use to the "shounen pretty boy" aesthetic and am disinterested in the glossy, sparkly "shoujo pretty boy" aesthetic. Again, this is pure bias on my part, but that's how I feel.

To top it all off, I couldn't connect with any of the characters and found myself losing interest at an alarming rate the further I read. I'm not saying this is a bad start to a series or a bad series in general, but it was definitely not for me. That being said, I can see how it can appeal to others, so if you're interested in a slightly smutty shoujo romance, give this a shot. Otherwise, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

I've been on a vampire kick recently, and this is just fueling the flames. Definitely skims over important information I wish they would've focused on, but I loved the art and enjoyed the story nonetheless.

I LOVE this manga. The art style is beautiful and the story is my catnip. I love a good woman-disguised-as-a-man trope, especially when there's a bit of a love triangle involved. This has slight Ouran High School Host Club and also Hana-Kimi vibes in that Mito is a very cute "boy" at an all boys school. I love the added vampire element, and the reasons Mito needs to keep pretending to be a boy. There's a bit of a comedy/rom-com element in this, as well as some really hot scenes where the leads' hearts go ba-dump. Just love it entirely.

Did I read this first one and then immediately buy the next six volumes in this seven volume series? You bet I did. And that's about the highest recommendation there is!

A digital ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for review. All opinions are unbiased and my own.

Kind of silly, but very entertaining. And more than that, it is rich. This thing is just itching for a thematic essay on its queer coding. Perhaps the depth there is not intentional, and maybe even problematic in parts? I think it’s too early to tell how smartly sexuality and gender are being handled here. And side from that, I’m quite intrigued. The magic rules seem to be made up as the story unfolds, but that’s okay. I’m here for the fun of it.

Reading my library vol. 1 checkouts: #3

This was like unhinged crack. Complete, nonsensical ridiculousness from the first page, all the way to the end. But I think the story works because it’s ridiculous and isn’t too serious. And so I enjoyed it. I don’t think this was great or anything, but I’m willing to read more. I’m curious if this will be a throuple situation, or the FMC is going to keep cross dressing? I’m not sure, but I will be reading vol 2.

This has a lot of tropes in it. Girl pretending to be a boy. Boy who says he can’t care about anyone but then it turns out he cares for the MC. Protective side character that causes lots of drama. This has it all! Plus vampires and great art! Honestly, what more could I ask for?

What happens when a girl, dressed as a boy, becomes the thrall of a vampire? Will her life get better? Or not?

Meet Mito, a girl who is dressed as a boy/acts like a boy. For safety and all that. One day things just go from worse to worse and she meets Ruka. A vampire. He is interested in her. Especially due to her bad tasting blood and a friend saying that maybe Mito is unloved (it is not untrue) and that giving love would help out. Well, Ruka is up to the challenge. Oh if only he knew that he was still fanging a girl, because he thinks Mito is a boy. Even takes her to his dorm and let’s her stay there. YUP. I really like Mito from the start, I feel for her. I want to give her a better and happier life, after all that happened she 100% deserves it! But I wasn’t a fan of how she hid the fact she was a girl from Ruka. Ruka who is just so gosh-darn honest and sweet and just wants the best for his thrall. I just hope that this whole situation gets resolved soon. Because they are getting closer and closer and it is clear they really like each other. I don’t want this to explode and create drama or hurt.

I really was amazed that our vampire (and well everyone around Mito) still has no clue about Mito being a girl. I guess it helps that she looks pretty boyish (though I immediately spotted she was a girl) and that her blood is disgusting (I know that only goes for Mito, haha, unless there are some other vampires lurking around in that school).

Then there is boy in the picture, he is a bad boy who knows about Mito (thanks to karate/judo practice and a slip of the hand). I am not sure what to think of him. And you all know how I feel about love triangles. Generally I hate them. A lot. I think it is kind of cute he is so protective of Mito… but also kind of creepy. Especially since Mito clearly has stated numerous times that she is OK. That she doesn’t need help. I hope that he becomes less protective and maybe becomes more than a white knight/the extra pawn in the love triangle.

But why would you wear a wig (which may fall off, though for some magic manga reasons it doesn’t) when you can just cut it off? I would have done that. I can imagine that for her maybe it is a way to be herself, but it is just so much effort. XD

Oh, and the scenes were Ruka is drinking from Mito? swoon It was just so sexy. Haha, I hope that this doesn’t sound wrong. XD

I loved the art, but then again it is Ema Touyama and I adore her style.

Well, I am so happy I got this from the Google Play store! If I can get the other volumes I will definitely be reading on, because I need to know how the story will continue.

When I first saw the cover of this manga, I never would have thought this vampire story would look like in this way. It was unique and unexpected. The art work of this manga was really pretty, but the plot and storyline itself felt a bit rushed. Well I know that in first volume you have to make reader intrigued to read others volumes as well. No matter this fat it still was too fast for me.

When I just started it, from first pages you could tell that something is wrong and character has a lot of women features. Later through the story my first thought was confirmed. This shoujo romance part felt a bit weird, you couldn't really name what kind of relationship was that. It wasn't really for me, but if you're a fan of vampires you should enjoy it.

I don't have anything against vampires and surely lot of time went past since I read any book or manga with these creatures. This theme was more last decade, but I still were really happy to see a new vampire story, especially romance.

Thanks to Kodansha and Net Galley as always for providing us an online copy of this manga in exchange for an honest review.

2/5 (This review is for all 14 books in the series). Vampire Dormitory is more than just a buddy love story. It’s an example of what happens when the worst kind of cliches are all dumped together, resulting in a bowl of slop that’s total inedible.

A beautiful, perfect girl with no character growth that does nothing to earn her partner’s love. A trite love triangle with an abusive love rival. Horrible pacing that wastes time on cookie-cutter side characters. Story beats that flow together poorly. There is no character development, terrible world-building, and the broader story arcs do not make sense. The soft artwork and pretty character designs only make this read even more offensive, signaling what could have been. It even attempts to take a bold risk with greater themes of “loving someone despite their gender” but does not commit.

Toyama-sensei somehow manages to create the worst Shojo comic that’s ever existed. Instead, check out her earlier works, Pixie Pop and Koko ni Iru yo (I am Here) for sweet, feel-good romances.

I'd like to thank NetGalley and Kodansha for the chance to review this manga volume.

Vampire Dormitory nails all the tropes it sets out to hit.
Likeable main character, that's had a rough time getting by.
This gave me some Ouran vibes because of the mistaken for a boy aspect of things.
You an interesting lead in our vampire Ruka-Kun he's the cool type but he's pretty funny too.
I really liked him plus he wore glasses in a few panels and I was a goner!
Then enter Ren and all bets are off because he's the mysterious brooding type and who doesn't love that.
Like I said this is your typical paranormal Shōjo and fan's of such will really enjoy it.
The character design is excellent and the story is very interesting. It seems like they'll go the love triangle route and at this point I don't know who I would choose.

This marginally reminds me of Hana Kimi hehe

Mito is a human who is propositioned by a vampire, Ruka, to be his thrall. Ruka has Mito enroll in the all boys school he’s attending to keep him close but here’s the catch: Mito’s actually a girl 🙃

There’s a handful of fan service, straight forward story, and a potential love triangle! The art’s pretty and it’s reading quickly too.

Volume contents: meeting at the cafe, school enrollment, weeb reveal, camping, Ren seeing a woman.

Overall...this one wasn't that bad. It was a bit too cheesey, but it also had all the basics you could want. So if you're looking for vampires, two cute boys as competing love interests, girls secretly dressed as boys, and lots of close proximity scenarios, this one may be for you.
