Wraith #2

Shadow Bound

Rate this book
After recovering from a horrific fire that took the lives of two people and released her best friend, Evan, to pass from this world to the next, Jane Watts finally has a chance to live a normal life.

If you consider seeing and guiding ghosts normal.

It’s summer and Jane and her friend, Ava, spend the hot, humid days working and hanging at the pool while Jane’s boyfriend, Connor, attends summer school. With the ghosts under control, things are going well until a friend from Connor’s past reconnects with him. Hours later she kills herself. Charlotte’s suicide throws Connor into a tailspin and her ghost latches on to Jane because, as they learned from Evan, ghosts only linger if they need something.

Unfortunately, Charlotte doesn’t need something. She wants something.

In Shadow Bound, Jane struggles with the fact that not every spirit is welcome and not all have good intentions. With Ava’s help, Jane stumbles into a decades-old murder, what her gift really means and how to save Connor from forces intent on destroying them all.

This is the second book in the ‘Wraith’ series, and kicks off the summer after the end of book 1 ‘Wraith’. **Warning – some unavoidable spoilers for book 1 ‘Wraith’**
Jane has recovered from the events of the first book, and is now seeing Connor, but isn’t really seeing ghosts the way she used to see Evan.

This all changes though when a girl that Connor spent time with in hospital (Charlotte) commits suicide. Connor can’t see her, but Jane can, and things get weird between them.

Jane doesn’t know what this girl meant to Connor, or what their relationship was like, but she does know that the girl – Charlotte, is angry about something, and that she’s doing something to Connor. Connor is behaving strangely, and getting himself into trouble, and Jane and Connor’s relationship is going downhill fast.
Can Jane help Connor? What does Charlotte want? And why does it seem that ghosts can now physically touch Jane?

I enjoyed this book. It was a fast paced story, and I liked the mystery element.

Jane is once again a sweet girl. She’s learned to live with what she is, and now that she knows she can help these ghosts, she tries to do what she can. Charlotte is something new for Jane though, a ghost with malevolent ideas, who is not only purposely trying to hurt Connor, but also trying to harm Jane.

Connor is a little more messed up in this instalment. He seems to be coping less well with the ghosts, and also seems to be having issues with his medication, and even knowing the difference between right and wrong. Connor really needs help, but it’s so difficult to know what anyone could do to help him, and although Jane tries her best, it’s obvious that there’s no obvious solution for Connor.

There’s a lot less romance in this book compared to the first, mainly because this time Jane and Connor’s relationship is in trouble, but this was necessary to the storyline, and wasn’t an issue for me. It was interesting to see the troubles that Jane and Connor were having, and how easy it was for Charlotte to drive a wedge between them. I’m hoping that some of these issues will be resolved in the third and final book.

I liked the storyline in this book, and I was surprised at a few points. I did make some guesses as to what would happen, but they were only partly right. There were a few little twists that I really appreciated, and I’m glad that we got a proper ending to the story. That being said I am interested to see what happens in the next instalment!
Overall; a great sequel! If you liked Wraith, you’ll like this.
7.5 out of 10.

After having read "Wraith", the first book in the series, just a couple days ago, I decided to dive into "Shadow Bound" as soon as possible.

Once again in the positives, let me say that the author knows how to tell a story. She doesn't waste pointless time and pages going back and forth, and frustrating readers.
The actual ghost story was done pretty well, and it did manage to surprise me. Something that is always a bonus.

However this time, the characters gave me a serious case of: "Oh, for heaven sake talk to one another"...and.."you've got to be kidding me..".

I am afraid that as romance goes, I wasn't as engaged in this one as I got with the first volume.

Of course there are things happening that aren't all that prone to love and happy feelings..but they do manage to make out a lot, so...you know, seeing them really talk to one another would have been good.

As it was, I couldn't help feeling that Jane was behaving _although in a way it could be considered mature _ a little selfish towards Connor...

She knows ghosts exist, so not wanting to believe in something, just because it still hasn't happened to her, felt a little strange.

Also, I was expecting a little more empathy towards the guy....
I can't believe I am saying this.

As to the writing per se, and reiterating the fact that the story flows, it does however suffer from the same problems as the first: There's a somewhat clumsy "entrance" at the beginning and end of each chapter, that could be easily resolved.

Or maybe it already has, since this edition I've read is from 2012.

Having read these two volumes I am now looking forward in reading the third one: Grave Possession.

Bottom Line: A series that for me is definitely better, than many more known ghost stories out there.

I will preface this by saying that although perhaps I have a bias, being Angel's usual editor (unable to do this book, though), I always enjoy her stories, original fiction or otherwise. Shadow Bound is no different. **yes, possible spoilers ahead**

In the first of the series, Wraith, the stage was set for Jane and Connor, and the relationship played out beautifully in this second installment. Angel really knows how to make a teenage relationship realistic, whether dealing with the supernatural or just plain old worrying about how far to take it physically. Both teens make stupid choices (standard for their age group), which keeps this rooted in reality and, when I wasn't cursing them each for being moronic, it was understandable.

The ghosts are definitely taken a step further in Shadow Bound, with new rules and a new playing field. Angel keeps you guessing on why things are happening, and what will occur next, and it is quite easy to get lost in the easy style with which she writes. I found myself sneaking chapters in during work on my Kindle, because I wanted to know what happened next. Next thing I knew, I was done with it, and was definitely left wanting more.

Really great growth of the characters and twists in plot, and I can't wait to see what the final installment holds for Connor and Jane. We know these kids are meant to be, but how will they cope with the new separation? I may have to bully the draft for the next book out of her sooner...hell, I wrote this review for her, which I rarely ever do. Points for me!

Wraith 2 is a great book. It has everything - darkness and lightness, mystery, angst and drama. Personally I liked it better than the first, but I guess when you like something in the beginning you always expect the next one to be even better. So, mission accomplished!
The thing I love best about this book is the edge it has, that little line it holds from the horror genre. It kept me awake and shivering till late night hours, eyes wide open. The evil in Charlotte, the mystique in Tonya and her mother.
The dialogue between Jane and Connor felt a little strange in the begging of the book, a little too mature for teens. But then again, that's what they are - two kids grown up too fast because of their different hard life.

**SPOILER**

After finishing Wraith (book 1) I immediately opened up Shadow Bound because I honestly couldnt get enough of Connor and Jane. This book is just as good, if not better than the second, picking up pretty much where the first book left off you are thrown right in the middle of yet another ghost dilemna. Connor and Jane's relationship is really put to the test in this book, causing all sorts of emotions to run through my mind. I was constantly flipping through each page just waiting for that next moment to find out what could possibly happen next!!! The ghosts in this book aren't as sweet and nice as Evan was and this forces Jane and Connor to really work hard to find out what it is that they are supposed to do to help this lost soul ( or souls ) to move on. All the pressure and danger really puts a strain on if Jane and Connor are really read to take all of this on themselves. And if their relationship can last... I felt sooo torn in this book, just wanting things towork themselves out, and those pesky ghosts to get lost! But alas it is just not that easy. I am left at the end just CRAVING for more the story, and to find out what is going to happen. PLEASE HURRY AND WRITE BOOK THREE!!!!! I am impatiently waiting.

This story drew me in quickly, even though it is the second in a series. It's important to me that a sequel can stand alone even if you don't get to read the first book or any subsequent ones. Shadow Bound was that type of story in my humble opinion. One becomes easily immersed into Jane and Connor's world, rooting for them to master their shared gifts. The story is rich with very engaging characters. I also very much loved Ava, Ms. Frances, and Jane's Aunt and Great-Aunt, who were all exceptionally well-drawn secondary characters that made for a rich and interesting story.

Charlotte? Don't get me started on her. I'll just let the other readers decide on their own. :)

The mythology on which Shadow Bound is built was brilliantly revealed through an intricate plot that reads like a mystery in some respects. It definitely kept me on my toes as I read through.

If you're interested in a YA Paranormal Romance that engages you from page one and entertains to the end, you can't go wrong with Shadow Bound (Wraith #2).

I was fortunate enough to pre-read this book, and it's a wonderful follow-up to Wraith. I actually enjoyed this one even more - it's darker, edgier, and there are several truly terrifying moments that will have you checking under your bed for days. I'm not even kidding. I've really become attached to Jane and Connor, and I found myself rooting for them throughout. I hope these characters will be back for another installment, because I think they definitely have more challenges to overcome. This one's a must-read - but you may want to leave the lights on!

I was even more thrilled to read this second book in the Wraith Series. Jane Watts has gone from having been labeled as a troubled teen to the closest thing she’s ever been to normal. In book one she was able to guide her best friend, Evan, to move from a stage of limbo by solving the mystery surrounding his death and the problems that still plagues his living mother and siblings. Jane has for the first time found a kindred spirit, pun intended, in her love interest Connor who has a similar problem over which they bond after working through some trust issues. Now Jane actually has a boyfriend and is able to do some of the things normal teenagers do with her friend, Ava, while Connor does summer school in an attempt to catch up with the rest of his class.

Jane’s brief foray into normalcy doesn’t last long. In Shadow Bound, she learns even more about this gift/curse she has out of necessity, but will she be too late? Charlotte, a friend of Connor’s from his institutionalization, reconnects with him, and then promptly commits suicide. This tragedy throws Connor for a loop as he struggles with the guilt surrounding Charlotte’s death. Because Charlotte learned of Jane’s gift before her demise, when she dies and becomes one of those ghosts who can’t cross over because she needs something, she seeks Jane out to try and get the thing that is hindering her crossing.

The ghosts in Shadow Bound are way more sinister, and the mystery surrounding each ghost she encounters escalates until their problems are all resolved. Jane and Ava show themselves to be very resourceful in doing the research required to figure out how to ward off this new breed of spirit that might mean more harm than good for our ghostly philanthropists. When threats to herself, her friends and family emerge via this new breed of ghost, Jane shows us just what she is made of. Will this threat have casualties that Jane doesn’t see coming? Find out by reading Wraith 2: Shadow Bound!

After reading the first book, I wanted more. But reading Shadow Bound, the second in the Wraith series, I was so excited because I couldn’t put the story down. From the very beginning, to the last page, it drew me in and I didn’t want to stop reading. The second book in this YA Paranormal Romance series was exactly how it should be. The characters were developed even more, new characters were introduced, and the story was unique and well thought out.

Jane tries to live a normal life. As she and her boyfriend Connor deal with relationship issues, they must also deal with ghosts, especially one who wants something. As I read, I wanted them to overcome their struggles. But what they went through was exactly how life happens, this book felt very real to me.

If you’ve read the first book, I highly recommend this one. But one interesting thing about Shadow Bound is that it could almost stand alone as a single book. Angel does a great job of incorporating the important bits of information from the first and carries them over to this one.

I’ve had the opportunity to read several books by Angel Lawson and she certainly does an amazing job.

This is my disclaimer, I am terrible at writing reviews, I am not eloquent but I will try and put my thoughts into words. I thought that things started out slow, as I read further I understood that it was just the lull after all that happened with Jane & Conner and setting up for what was coming. I was happy that things had seemed to be a little bit normal for the two of them so maybe Jane could come to better terms with what she was supposed to do with her gift.
There are things in book two that weren't made really clear but I think maybe that is how we are supposed to feel because Jane and Conner aren't really sure either and that the next installment will clear those things up. I won't spoil it but I will say that book 3 can't come soon enough, the fate of Jane and Conner rests in Angel's capable hands.

Good installment but I HATED THE CLIFFIE! Now I have to sit and wait patiently for the next book. Poor Jane and Connor, they're just never going to get it right.

Interested to see where the next book goes since Connor will be gone a year. I'm hoping there is no love triangle planned, I think there's enough angst without adding that element. Wondering if we're going to sprint ahead a year and see how they've both weathered the time apart. Also wondering if Ava's going to become a more intricate part of the story now that she knows and is all into helping Jane.

Can't wait for the next installment :)

I love this story. I fell in love with the first book, and was pleased to see the characters continued on into the second without a kink. For a YA book, I really like the mystery and the way the story is written leaves you thinking. It is also very easy to visualize the different characters and settings that are described. I really enjoy that aspect. This book series (I'm already banking on #3) would make for an awesome movie!

Jane's best friend, the ghost Evan, has been 'released' after saving her from a fire in book 1. Now Jane and her friend Ava are trying to enjoy a normal summer while Jane's boyfriend Connor is going to summer school to catch up after his time in rehab. When Charlotte, a girl Connor met while in the rehab hospital, kills herself, Connor goes into a tailspin, and Charlotte's ghost tries to take over Jane. This book is a little grittier than the previous ones. After Jane finds out what being 'shadow bound' means, she tries to save Connor, and ends up mixed up in a murder that happened many years ago.

Really good story about the paranormal. The love saga continues also. But something about the relationship between the two main characters just didn't do it this time. It wasn't the turmoil in the story, it was the way the characters were written. I will be heading into the third book soon.

Pues...

***IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE FIRST BOOK IN THE SERIES, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS***

Rating: 4

The Low Down: Jane and Connor are together, but lately, Connor has been distant and moody. A girl he knew when he was hospitalized in the past has committed suicide, and he seems to be having a lot of difficulty dealing with it. When Charlotte appears in Jane’s room, Jane can tell that something is off. Charlotte is manipulative, mean and scary. She says she has no interest in crossing over because she has some things to take care of. Connor usually takes medication to help with the huge influx of ghosts that he sees, but Jane can tell that he’s not taking them now. She knows it has something to do with Charlotte, but she doesn’t know what. Did Connor have a thing with Charlotte in the past?

Meanwhile, there’s a little ghost girl that has been hanging around at Jane’s next-door neighbor’s house. She seems shy and, at first, unwilling to tell Jane what she wants. Jane is the person that ghosts go to so they can cross over, but the girl’s mother says the girl has been waiting around thirty years to help Jane. And, when Jane visits with her great-aunt in a care facility, she doesn’t know why Aunt Ruth tells Jane that it’s not a raven that’s been following her, it’s the angel of death.

Both Jane and Connor are keeping secrets from each other. But if they can’t confide in each other, than who can they talk to? Is it true that Connor is just one of those guys who is always going to be a delinquent? Are things just going to end unhappily between them? What of the ghosts? Will there be more like Charlotte – angry, bitter and scheming? And when Jane discovers that she is more than a crossover conductor for the departed, could Charlotte use that for evil?

Best Thang ‘Bout It: When I reviewed the original, I didn’t know there was going to be a sequel. The first book was neatly tied up, but as I said in my review, there were ways to make an interesting volume 2. That being said, many sequels don’t have the “zing” of the original, the freshness and newness, so they seem forced or worse, boring. There are new characters in this story that add a new dimension to the drama; and Jane finding out more about her ability is very compelling. Also, the friction between Jane and Connor adds an element of reality in a story where two people who care for each other deeply still need to get to know and trust each other. The characters are three dimensional people, not stereotypes. There’s no drama for the sake of drama which is usually a poorly used plot device.

I’m Cranky Because: My only complaint would be that there was so much going on in this book that I could have used more time with the various components. There was not one character in the book that was superfluous, the various story lines all had impact and were compelling and a vital part of the story.

Should You?: Yes. Ms. Lawson is a wonderful storyteller whose characters are absorbing, real, sometimes damaged and always entertaining.

Jane and Connor are back with a brand new set of problems: a psychotic, disturbed ghost bent on playing the tormentor, the pressures of having a not-so normal relationship, and secrets secrets secrets abound. Oy. That's a relationship killer, isn't it? Trust is the name of the game and someone forgot to tell these two what the rules are. A literal ghost from the past will haunt them and their already fragile relationship will be tested.

Jane also finds out what she truly is and what her abilities entail. I don't purposely go out of my way to find ghost stories because lately, it hasn't been my thing. But man, Angel sure run a tight ship. She won't have you questioning the whys and the hows nor would she have you bored. I also love the unpredictability of this book. There wasn't a hint as to how a couple of characters were tied to each other. And this why I'm a fan of Angel's writing. She's random but not erratic. More so malleable than anything else. This book for example, is far from the norm. It didn't really conform to all the other ghost stories out there but she did her best to offer her readers something new.

(Cheesy line in 3...2..)I miss Evan with an ache that I cannot even explain. I didn't like Connor and Jane's relationship in this book. It was frustrating and it made me realize how good Evan was with Jane. I am a little nervous that the introduction of a new character will pave the way for another round of frustration based on how things ended.

And speaking of endings, it was cruel; plain and simple. That's all I can say about that. Rest assured that I will be annoying the author with a never-ending, are you done yet? until the third book gets done. (Update: she claims she will torture us even more in the third book but she's all about HEA. I guess that's a good thing, yeah?)

Lost ghost
angry ghost
looking to find a way.
Lost ghost
angry ghost
revenge, come what may.
They speak to those
who can see,
and show to those
who can hear.
But lost ghost, angry ghost
forever lost and astray.
A girl with a third sight
a boy who seeks the light.
Out of his stupor -
toward something called,
normal life.
All is not meant to be,
pushed by force that can't be seen.
To do things against his will
forsaking all abilities.
They can't save the other -
together
but they can fight their
demons - apart.
And when the dusts finally settle
(I hope)
they'd be together come morning light.

Shadow Bound, the 2nd book in the Wraith series, opens up almost immediately where the 1st book ends. And almost immediately, the reader gets a sense of something sinister that's about to happen.

And then it does. As the story unfolds, Jane and Connor face even bigger obstacles that test their relationship and bring them both close to their own demise. Shadow Bound is an action-packed thrill ride, a creepy ghost story and an exquisite young adult novel, all at the same time.

Angel brings her special brand of magic to this 2nd installment, just like she did in the first one.

The characters are well-fleshed out and show additional growth in this installment, especially Jane. She struggles with the understanding that not all ghosts mean her well, or are simply looking for help to cross over, but that some can be sinister and wish her harm.

The supporting cast is also back, but we get additional characters (and ghosts) that play a huge role in the plot as well.

The villains are both easily spotted and come at you as a surprise. Help comes from unexpected places, and old secrets are revealed.

As I said, it's definitely a thrill ride. The book stands on its own, just like the first one did, but it does end with a bit of a cliffhanger, albeit one that made sense for both Jane and Connor.

Angel's writing is as I've come to expect - matching the tone of the novel, she seems to have chosen her words carefully and fully brings across the teenage and supernatural struggles both Jane and Connor face once again.

I can hardly wait for the next one.

These books should be read in order, so start with Wraith, then read this one.

I received a free copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not promised in return. Other than the free book, I was not compensated for my time or my opinion.

Disclaimer: I received this book from the author for free in exchange for an honest review. The review is not influenced in any way.

It's another one of those stories with a minor to majorly strange title in which the meanings of it are figured out with the following ways: a) woven throughout the pages and only reading will enlighten you, b) it's in the dictionary and it has a double meaning, which definitely isn't the typical definition you generally hear, or c) you simply never find out why.

Well, it's been a while since the situation with Evan and his family has passed. It's now summer vacation and it's been ghost-free for Jane and Connor for some time. At least for awhile. It's not along until another ghost comes along, and it's worse than Evan's situation.

I like how Shadow Bound is a different situation to both Jane and Connor than what they're used to. It's a bit more challenging for them, and we find out more about Jane's ability, which is different than what she thought it was. I'm surprised that Ruth was willing to help and warn Jane later; she seemed too lost to help, much less warn.

I'm confused a few times, especially a bit at the beginning, but overall, I found Shadow Bound better than Wraith in a way. I am hoping, however, that if there's ever a *insert one word spoiler*-sized ghost, both Jane and Connor have better luck, despite the tedious situation they'll be in.

Shadow Bound by Angel Lawson is the 2nd book in the Wraith series. I highly recommend that you read Wraith (book 1) before reading this book. Shadow Bound continues the story of Jane & Connor and their experiences with ghosts. In Shadow Bound, the reader also discovers why ghosts are able to physically interact with Jane. In Wraith, the ghosts that Jane interacted with were nice and friendly. But in Shadow Bound, Jane and Connor have to deal with a malicious spirit who wants Connor and is willing to hurt Jane.
The story was interesting and had some definite creepy and scary moments. It was dark and intense.
I really enjoyed seeing how the characters dealt with the malicious spirit. Jane grew stronger and also more willing to trust the people who care about her with her secret. Connor had a lot of trouble dealing with the situation and started to regress. There was a lot of tension between Jane and Connor.
This was a great continuation of Wraith and a great read.

I read Wraith when it was originally released and I did not re-read it before reading Shadow Bound. I was glad I didn't because although there are references and reminders of what happened in Wraith, Shadow Bound could be read as a stand alone book. I enjoyed Wraith but Shadow Bound is a much grippier and darker storyline and the threat of danger just keeps you page-turning until the end. We learn more of Jane and Connor and their relationship as well as delving a little into Connor's past when it unexpectedly arrives in the present. There are new characters introduced, some good, some bad, but all described in a rich tapestry of words. This sequel is much stronger that the first book in this series and I am looking forward to reading the next story, given the development of the writing. Keep up the great work!

Jane and Connor return and let us further into their minds and lives. Someone from Connor's past comes back to haunt him, literally! The more I read of these two, the more I want to know and I was thrilled and enchanted to follow along their story and find Jane a new friend as well, a big sigh of relief for that!! Love this series and Ms. Lawson!

I have even held onto one of her books, Vigilant, for a long period because I knew when it was done, it was done and I didn't really have another to read!
Her characters are engaging, the stories go in different places that I don't expect and I always am left wanting more!

4 STARS In the first book, I found Connor to be a beacon of hope and understanding for Jane. She needed to trust someone who wouldn't judge her by her gift. In this book, the trust is tested and slowly tearing apart. No matter how strong their bond is, Connor and Jane must be stable individually in order to work well collectively. Jane has grown so much and the more knowledge she receives about her abilities and the other planes, the more confident she becomes in herself.
Will the ghosts sent to her always be on her side? Will she always be able to find a way to release those lost souls, even if they don't want to move on? When a ghost learns more about Jane's abilities than it should, will the vantage be in their favor? Can Connor and Jane survive without the other or are they destined to be together?

3.5 stars.

This is actually a very solid, incredibly readable sequel to Wraith even though it can stand in its own right. I was surprised by how realistically Jane and Connor's relationship problems escalated then deescalated with a natural, rhythmic development. And as always the ghosts in these books are as underhanded and unpredictable as can be.

I knew book 2 was going to amp up the excitement, the emotion and boy did it ever! I was caught between hopeful and seriously tense as I watched these characters try to muddle through an intense and dangerous situation.

I am again impressed with the sensitivity and attention given to topics such as obsession, drug/alcohol abuse and sexual abuse. They are not used simply as gimmicky, cheap, plot vehicles, but are presented in a way that evokes genuine emotion and a desire to see justice done.

I was all twisted up over the struggle between Jane and Connor, and thought it is a bittersweet journey thought that the choices they both made were true to form.

What a great book!
