A kitten languishes in a pet shop, unwanted and unloved. Even as his price drops with each passing day, no one spares him a glance unless it's to call him names. Having practically given up on life, the kitty himself is most shocked of all when an older gentleman comes into the store and wants to take him home! Will the man and the cat find what they're looking for..in each other?
This is the cutest manga I've ever read. If you have a cat, or any kind of pet, you're going to love this. I literally cried at how happy Kana and Fukumaru were that they found each other, and how much a pet and it's owner can love each other.
Umi Sakurai! How have we never crossed paths before?
If not for an email from one of the local bookstores (*waves to Kinokuniya*) advising that some graphic novels were on sale, I wouldn’t have known of his existence. The cover caught my eye (of course!). So I ordered Books 1 – 3 in this series, and am so glad I did.
My heart melted. Completely. It's that puddle on the floor. Might be a few quiet tears in there too.
"I'll be turning one at any meow-ment now, but...I still don't have a name."
A lonely widower decides to buy a kitten who has been waiting in a pet store for his person to claim him for way too long. Serendipity and kismet all rolled into one bundle of squidgy, black and white fur.
A story about longing and hope, but most of all love. Everybody loves a hug, don't they? This book will hug you.
Absolutely and utterly gorgeous. I cannot fault this graphic novel. It has all the feels ᓚᘏᗢ
"There's no such thing as too much happiness, is there?!"
I recommend it wholeheartedly. For both the young and young at heart. A piece of calm in this topsy turvy world.
This is one I'll turn to often, as I know it will put a smile on my dial.

It was unusual to read the book from right-to-left. But somehow that added to the joy and quirkiness.
Please have a look at Deborah’s utterly delightful review!
I remember liking this a lot the first time I read it. I do not remember sobbing like a silly fool through the whole thing, like I did this time....

A sweet, adorable story about a middle-aged widower who finds someone else to love in the form of a huge, odd-looking cat. For such a slight book (it takes just a few minutes to read), the characters and their emotions, how much the man and cat need and heal each other, come through really well.
An unwanted (not cute) cat is adopted by a sad widower. Normal cat and cat owner behavior ensues. You will either love this or wonder why it exists at all.
Often, I feel like I’m missing a key fundamental understanding of manga, and thus enjoying it to its full potential always seems to elude me.
This focuses on a cat who has been overlooked at the pet store for cuter and younger kitties, but one day Fukumaru’s luck changes, and he’s taken home by a lonely man named Kanda.
Overall, cute and sweet, this is 9 volumes long so their great love story I suspect, has only just begun!
In the long run I don't think I will be able to endure the cutesy meow puns that appear in almost every single thought bubble of the cat, but the quiet dignity and sadness and occasional awkwardness of the man who has adopted him carried me past that issue this time around.
Overlooked and having outgrown his kittenhood, a cat is finally adopted by a man. He cannot believe that a purrson is taking him home. He wants to stay pawsitive. Told with feline commentary in the cat’s narrative and the efforts and compassion of the man’s, they learn to trust and love each other. With each chapter, the story warmed my heart again and again. I just had to remember to read from right to left. A must for anyone who loves cats whether they are a Manga fan or not. 5 Meows!
If want to just sit back and enjoy a really cute story of a man and his cat bonding, this is for you.
See, Kanda here has lost his wife not too long ago it seems. The story dances around the timeline but you can feel the loneliness of the older gentleman. But soon into the book we meet Fukumaru. Who's that? Well he's a fat cat who no one wants to buy and the poor cat is getting older and older and soon will probably be sent to a shelter. So Kanda buys him and they begin their life together.
It's a lot of small stories of how Fukumaru and Kanda rely on each other to grow and be happy once more. Fukumaru glad he has a dad, a home, and fun times ahead. Kanda is focused on regaining his happiness and with the help of Fukumaru he'll do just that. The bond between the two is both cute and well done.
It can get a little repetitive at points but overall this was too charming to care too much. A 4 out of 5.
Ummmm possibly the most wholesome piece of literature ever written? I LOVE THIS SERIES SM 😭😭😭
If you have a cat, or are a cat lover in general, YOU NEEEEED THIS SERIES IN YOUR LIFE. It varies between human & cat POV. IS2G FUKUMARU’S POV MADE ME TEAR UP POSSIBLY EVERY TIME. I can only hope that is how my cat feels about me! I know that I love her beyond belief & she always cuddles me & is affectionate (unless she’s in chaos mode where the little gremlin will trick you into petting her only for a SURPRISE ATTACK! & then run around the house jumping over couches, counters, you name it 😂. Lyra takes zoomies to another LEVEL OML! Is2g you can barely ever see her, that cat runs so darn fast!🤣 ) and I’m pretty sure she loves me too 😉🥰😊.
I love my ecchi harem romance fantasy manga but sometimes reading all of that can flood one's tired heart with sludge. Sometimes you just need to cleanse yourself with a wholesome story and that is what "A Man and His Cat" can do for you. To describe my experience after reading the first volume, it was a purifying read. Nothing is more pure than what this older gentleman widower and his cat have as they live and seek mutual companionship from each other.
Still, take this with a grain of salt, My profile picture totally indicate that have a pet cat and I am an easy mark for this series. Regardless, I believe you can still enjoy this with a cat and may even want to get one for your own. It is a heart warming series and it can tug at your heartstrings.
An incredibly sweet story of a cat and a man learning to love life together 😭😭. Not much appeal to a non-cat lover, but such a lovely read if you're a big cat fan!
Super cute heartwarming story loved cat illustrations Although it’s a series I won’t be continuing the series— it’s just literally about a cat and his thoughts. lol
I love cats. I'm trying to expand my knowledge of manga, but so far I have not found a manga involving cats that I've enjoyed.
There is a story about grief and loss at the heart of this that might have been really endearing but the point of view character is a cat who constantly makes cutesie meow puns. I found it impawsible to get past. I dreaded the turn of every page, and I will definitely be returning this to the shelves.
I laughed, I cried, I laugh-cried. I went out and adopted 50 cats after reading this book. A wonderfully cute book that will make you hug your pet closer or want to adopt more pets. Would highly recommend it. I will be sure to read all of the books in the series.
