Paranormal investigation takes balls. Amanda will just have to wing it then.
What was she thinking? Quitting her steady job in the Police for an uncertain future at a paranormal investigation agency? No time to dwell on it though as she has a new client with a surprising problem – Kimberly Kousins has been cursed by a voodoo priest.
Determined to prove to herself, her former Chief Inspector (whom she loathes) and everyone else, that she is a capable woman with no need for a man to rescue her, she is going to have to bend the day to her will.
But voodoo nonsense isn’t the only thing distracting her. After several dates with hot, athletic, superrich Brett Barker, they still haven’t made it into bed. Is that normal? Is he waiting for her to make the first move? Her new boss has inexplicably taken the week off without warning, leaving her to run the business and his best friend, the six-foot-seven-inch, handsome, muscular Benjamin Winters AKA Big Ben is being very clear about what he wants to do with her.
You can be certain that nothing will go as planned in this mayhem-filled, madcap cozy mystery.
Let's start this off with an invitation to get some FREE books. No, you didn't read that wrong, we are talking about multiple free books. I love giving away free books because once people delve into the fast-paced mystery thrills I write, they go on to buy lots more.
When I wrote my first novel, Paranormal Nonsense, I was a Captain in the British Army. I would love to pretend that I had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that I have had to change my name and continually move about because I am still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, I started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.
At school, I was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, I won my first award. However, calling it my first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, I am having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and will claim to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in my head as they clamor to get out.
Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good.
In the Doodoo with Voodoo by Steve Higgs is the 6th book in the Blue Moon Investigations series. While Tempest Michaels is taking a well earned break after the Klown case, Amanda Harper is left to handle the Blue Moon Investigation agency and takes on a case where a woman is being stalked and cursed by a so called voodoo priest. A fun book. Amanda shows that she is a capable and smart investigator but I wish she would stop feeling that she can hold her own and accept and ask for help and advice when needed. It is sad that her former police boss is so misogynistic and obnoxious and makes it difficult for her with her former colleagues. Patience is a lot of fun as always. We don't see or hear much from Tempest until the very end. The mystery was interesting with a lot of strange and weird characters and the spiders and snakes were creepy. It would be nice to see Tempest and Amanda spend more time together on the cases and hopefully this is to come. Hopefully Brett stays out of Amanda's life. Plenty of laughs and a very entertaining cozy mystery.
The Amanda Harper stories aren’t as good as the Tempest Michael’s ones—no puppies. Also, the plot was pretty guess-able. Fun to see Patience Woods again, but not my favorite of the series even if it did involve potential voodoo.
I actually like the premise of this series since I made it this far in, but I cannot figure out if he’s insulting my intelligence in particular or all of his reader’s intelligence. The two big things that made me quit this series are the god-awful 1980’s sitcoms tropes around relationships; he literally doesn’t even bother with the “just let explain” as they storm off, just no one says anything. Second is the resolution to the big conspiracy/mystery is wrapped up in 2 pages. The author spends more time talking about details of traffic than he does resolving plot lines. It started with an interesting premise, but has just gotten worse from there.
After the last solo Amanda Harper book ( and my slightly scathing review for it) I was not sure how this next one would be. But it read perfectly within the series. Was not taken away from the series as a whole with a different protagonist. Amanda’s interactions with Big Ben were pretty funny at times but the book was everything it was meant to be. A fun British crime/detective story with characters that are similar to many people we meet in our day to day lives. Looking forward to the next book. ( also see a mention of a Mr Schneider in there. Nice nod to another of Higgs’ series)
Ex police officer Amanda is shepherding two jobs simultaneously in her last week as a serving pc. She is called, via the Paranormal investigations agency, otherwise known as BLUE MOON, to contact a young woman called Kimberly who believes that a former boyfriend of hers had put a voodoo curse on her.
In order to solve the case, Amanda enlists the help of her good friend Patience Woods who is a police officer and former colleague, in finding the person accused of this crime. Kimberly states that it was an ugliness curse that was put against her and it seems to be affecting Kimberly very badly.
The man who is accused of doing the voodoo is Bartholomew King. He's a nasty piece of work, who seems to have a strong influence on other people and who firmly believes that he can in fact, do voodoo.
When going to interview Mr. King, Amanda runs afoul of this voodoo doctor and starts to become unwell after attempting to question him.
What is happening to her?
Can Patience help, even though she is afraid of voodoo and believes in its power?
How can they prove Mr. King is a faker, when in fact, his curses work, causing both women to become slowly uglier, seemingly straight after rejecting his advances?
Amanda and Patience set out to prove he is just a clever faker. But will both the women be able to do so, before the ugliness curse really takes hold?
I liked this book for its laughs and for characters like King and Jane/James, you will understand that when you read it. It is a really fun read with a great plot and some really memorable characters. King as a character was one of those sleezy, nasty types who think the world revolves around them and I hated that and yet loved how well written he was. Jane/James was a brilliant character too...one I will remember forever I think.
Amanda Harper has officially finished her police career and is now working full time with Blue Moon Investigations. Just in time to meet with a new client who believes she has been cursed by voodoo and as a result is losing her hair, her gums are bleeding and she has a massive outbreak of acne. Further investigations show that other girls who have also turned down a certain bloke, met on a dating site, have also suffered the same fate. James/Jane offers his/her services as does Big Ben, Amanda's erstwhile colleague Patience has also become involved in the case. It is only when they all individually disappear only to be reunited by their kidnappers that Amanda realises just what they have become involved in. Luckily, given that nobody knows where they are or even that they have vanished, Tempest Michaels turns up just in the nick of time, accompanied by a number of police officers from the serious crimes lot that he has managed to persuade to ''assist'' in finding his missing staff and friends. Even better, Amanda and her friend Patience gain the publicity from having managed to infiltrate and destroy a group that the local police have been hunting for years, robbing the local DI of the credit he was intending to claim for himself. Another excellent book from Steve Higgs.
"In the Doodoo with Voodoo", sixth episode in the Blue Moon Investigations series, takes the focus off Tempest Michaels to concentrate on his newest employee (and love interest) Amanda Harper. This time the crime features an aspect of Voodoo with young women, who have rejected the amorous approaches of Bartholomew King, losing their hair and falling ill. Of course, as anyone who has followed the series thus far will know, there is no room for the paranormal - come hell or high water there will be a more mundane solution. Amanda is joined by serving copper Patience and gender-fluid off manager James/Jane as the details emerge. I stopped reading the series a while ago as I felt it was becoming too predictable but getting back into it was like putting on a comfortable slipper - I remembered the characters and even some of the previous tales. I was away for three days (first time since Covid and, of course, finally succumbed to it!) and a lot of it was spent reading the series. 3.5 Stars.
Mr. Higgs, please Sir can we have some more Patience? 😂😂😂
O.M.F.G. She is my favourite character in this series by far. 1.09am.. I mean 0109 hours, and I'm still laying in bed laughing...
and I quote "I glanced at Patience and wished I hadn’t. She was naked and had boobs that, without the benefit of support, and with the addition of frantic motion, had turned into an additional pair of limbs. They were going different directions so that her nipples were now about three feet apart. Of all the images my eyes had captured tonight, this was perhaps the one that would stay with me the longest."
There's more of course, but that just needed highlighting!
While Tempest is away for the week, Amanda hands in her police uniform and takes on her first totally independent investigation. A young woman tells her she is being terrorized by a vodoo priest who has cursed her to be ugly. Her hair is falling out, she develops terrible acne, and her gums are bleeding. With more than a little help from Big Ben and police officer Patience Woods Amanda takes down a man who has been sought by the police for 30 years.
Amanda's rich and handsome new boyfriend sees her with Big Ben and thinks she is cheating on him. He goes out of the country with friends and tells her that he does not want to hear from her anymore.
Like most of the books in this series there are a lot of good things to be said. Such as the fact the pacing is decent, the drama is good, and the ending is humorous. There were some minor issues, but that is more with the dislike of certain elements of the story.
The only really bad thing that stands out is the some of the side characters are unentertaining or well written. Some are great, but some are not. I guess it balances out to some degree, but not enough in my opinion.
Overall, a good ride and the series seems to be picking up momentum after a few average books. Worth your time staying invested in the series
My hopes that this series would improve were completely destroyed. The horrible tropes continue to abound. In addition to the sex obsessed friend "Big Ben" who is so gorgeous that women throw themselves at his feet, we now have the large, loud, black policewoman who is sex obsessed, mouthy and refers to herself in the third person. The investigator makes stupid choices. Oh well. This one was so bad that I couldn't finish it and I doubt I will read anything relating to this series ever again.
With Tempest out of town, Amanda takes on her first big case of paranormal detecting and it's a doozy! There is a drug dealer and cult leader in the sleazy part of town who is stalking a young woman who turned him down, called the Zombie King! With the help of Big Ben, James/Jane, and her girlfriend Patience the PC, they try to infiltrate what turns out to be a freaky family business indeed.
Who knew that escaping with their lives and without a stitch on could be tremendously funny?
I am reading the Blue Moon Investigation books from the boxed set. The editing is poor. Sometimes it is difficult to determine if the wrong word was inserted, a word missing, or a sentence that is just garbled. This story was an Amanda Harper tale. Tempest showed up in the end but he was away fighting ghost pirates at the same time. I liked the character development for Ben. I am anxious to read a story with the whole gang working together.
Another funny one. We learn more than we want about Big Ben and Patience's sex lives; Amanda finds out Tempest is in love with her and a few bad guys get their comeuppance. The voodoo in the title is used by a stalker and is, as usual, not paranormal at all. Can hardly wait to read the next one. Recommended.
After enjoying the Tempest Michaels books it is a big letdown to read such boring drivel how many times do you read that she wants to go to bed with her new boyfriend. The book lacks the humor you come to expect in the Tempest Michaels books. I'm hoping Steve writes more Tempest books and quietly.kills off MS Harper. Not Recommended
Do NOT have a hot beverage nearby when reading this book! The characters are exceptional and many of the situations are just too funny for words. Which is one reason why I will not attempt a recap, and no spoilers here. You wouldn't believe either, anyhow!
I almost didn’t read this. Growing up in the Deep South you learn that voodoo is some nasty stuff. However I was laughing from the start. Riggs managed to spin a great tale punctuated with good humor. I am in love with all of the characters.
Despite the name lol this was a good book. The plot and characters are interesting and well written. A little help needed in proofing but really a good story I whole. Definitely enjoyed and recommend
This is my least favorite in the series. Protagonist Amanda started out as a strong female character earlier in the series. In this book though she acts without thinking or planning which puts herself and others in grave danger. Hopefully, the next in the series will be better.
This is another Blue Moon Investigations adventure. It’s thrilling and a bit offbeat. If you know Steve Higgs other books, you understand what I’m saying. Honestly you don’t want to miss this one.
Such a delightful scary, funny, "who done it"! Tempest's crew is a amalgamation of characters with different skills, life styles and personalities all which make "Blue Moon Investigations" so very successful. Great story can't recommend this book highly enough.
Read like it’s written by a thirteen year old scribbling whilst sitting at the back of a bus. Just had to stop reading not often I’ve cringed so much when reading something.
Boy do things get complicated when a client hires them to protect her from a voodoo king and it only gets more complicated from there, so many twists and turns it's hard to tell which end is up but in the end they bring the voodoo king down. Great read.
I am loving this series! I am so happy that this series has a several books! I know that I am going to read each and every one of them. This is a wonderful story, get your first in this series and enjoy!
A change of viewpoint, the main character for this tale is Amanda, the policewoman Tempest has taken on to build the investigation team. This didn't work as well as expected, mainly because of the continuing innuendo, although the mystery of the voodoo and resolution were well done. It was OK.
