He needs to work hard, crack strands, and avoid the attention of those hunting him. And oh yeah, his family and friends want to know why he’s shacking up with five gorgeous women and stockpiling a mountain of ammo. Meanwhile, his newly released Beast just wants to teach all enemies a lesson they’ll never forget…
Don’t mess with Texas!
But how can Brawley succeed when psionic outlaws seize neighboring ranches, threatening to kick off a bloody range war?
Warning: Power Mage is an explosive series containing graphic violence, explicit scenes, and a harem of gorgeous women who wreak serious havoc with their minds. Read at your own risk.
This is yet another 5-star book for this series. Hondo Jinx delivers another great novel in what is fast becoming one of my favourite series in this genre.
(Note: This review is more a commentary on the series as a whole than this individual novel, but the points are still relevant)
This genre is a guilty pleasure of mine, but I have always been aware of the fact that it is little more than pure fantasy and light reading. However, some books like Michael Scott Earle's Tamer series, William D Arands's Sales on Superheros series, and Jan Stryvant's Valen's Legacy series, show the potential for how this genre could mature into something more than a guilty pleasure.
Hondo Jinx comes the closest to this potential of any series I have read yet. The story is deep enough to hook you beyond the male-fantasy angle, and the writing is as polished and professional as any other excellent novel I have read.
Therefore, when reading these books they become less guilty pleasures (a story about magic, sex and a harem fantasy), and more just an excellent story with an adult subplot that won't be to everyone's tastes, but that improves the story for others.
This has been achieved through two simple things:
1- Care has been given to the series beyond an excuse for the protagonist to have sex with lots of beautiful women 2 - All of the women in this book are treated as characters and not just conquests.
Both are important points, but it's the second that has raised this series above the rest for me. Each of Brawleys wives are developed into well-rounded characters before they're added into his harem. This makes the reader care about them individually and makes the rest of the story more meaningful.
All that being said, the balance is still a little off for this series to ever fully escape my 'guilty-pleasure' shelf, but it is a fun read that has glimpses of becoming something much more profound.
Once again the author provides a great book that entertains and leaves you wanting more. The pacing was breakneck and the action scenes are well written. The author has continued to make the characters grow and develop in ways that keep you engaged with the story. Overall it was good and I highly recommend it.
Meaner and edging into misogyny There is a thing some books do where the hero suddenly gets stupid in just the right way to advance the plot. This is that book in this series.
Another good installment in the series. Brawley and the girls are now in Texas and have other problems to deal with. The first is introducing his 4 wives to his parents! Things are progressing with the story as anyone would expect. He does end up cracking open another power in this book (I won't tell you which one cause that would be a spoiler). The main people after Brawley (The order, the psi mob, the government and the tiger mage) don't really play a big part in this story. Instead, Brawley and his girls have to deal with someone different. A new neighbor is doing something shady and is a psi mage. Does it have anything to do with him and his girls?
We also find out a little more about the massacre that happened 20 years ago with the killing of all the power mages. This part didn't make much sense. As an abstract idea I can understand, but to think that killing all of the power mages was a good idea and then do it? Then to have people 20 years later still believe it was their only choice? This was all based on a rule that nobody remembers the reason for?
Overall I like the magic system, I like the women. Each one is different and has a unique personality but isn't one dimensional. I won't go so far as to say they are complex, but they aren't only stereotypes. The story is pretty good except for my complaints above with the set-up. No story is perfect though and I do really like the series.
I have to say, this series is just getting better and better with time. I am loving where this series is going and can't wait for the next installment in the adventures of Brawley and his wives as he masses power, wealth and learns more about his past and potential future. If you haven't been riding this series like a cowboy on a bull, do yourself a favor, strap in, grab your cowboy hat and ride this bull of an adventure.
More of the same if you liked the others this one is a great addition. A little put off by how little happens hopefully the author willl change the time scale soon and give us more than 36 hours of progress. I imagine he will with the situation at the end of this book as Brawley scurrying around barely surviving is becoming a bit rote. A man only gets busted in the jaw so many times before he learns to keep it down.
Each book in this series is like a fabulous pub burger. Tasty, juicy, filling, and a guilty pleasure. There’s more going on than what meats the eye, and there’s a master plot that you’re just dying to know more of. Definitely adult material: not just the sex, but a lot of side commentary, including great descriptions and humor need a bit of age to really appreciate. Definitely worth trying and following. Recommended.
Brawly made it back to God's Country(yes I love in TX!) Now he and the girls have to setup house learn to work together get Frankie on board! All the while avoiding the Order and Tiger Mage, to top it off he's got a new neighbor that's up to no good and he and his crew are in serious need of an ass whoopin'! If you haven't started this series do yourself a favor and Do It Now!!!
These books are a guilty pleasure. There are flashes of good writing, but mostly it’s silly entertaining trash. The main character, Brawley, is so cliche and comical, you can’t not like him. Even though the magic system is still fun, the gimmick has worn off.
All things considered, this series is still fun to read. I’m looking forward to the next book. I’m just hoping the ending doesn’t drag out too long, which is what it looks like it’s going to do.
This book was recommended to me by Audible. I didn't realize it was the 4th in a series until about a quarter of the way in. Nevertheless, very entertaining and imaginative. Good characters and situations. The action scenes were graphic and so well written. Great villains and henchmen. The one thing that took me by surprise, were the sex scenes. Just like the action scenes, the descriptions here were very detailed. But all in all, good storyline.
Unfortunate. I now have to go to book one to find out what some of the past references were all about.
Brawley feels better about being home, but he has to come up with a strategy to counter his enemies and protect friends and loved ones. He gets more powerful, but still it isn't enough to take on the White Tiger. Several questions are answered, but more questions arise. I like the action, humor, and romance. I look forward to the next book.
This one is definitely a nail bitter in a lot of places and makes you feel like our hero is done for. Excellent read and great build on the story, can’t wait for the next one.
Its continuing to be in synchronization with the overall plot begun in book one. The mc is faced with new challenges to solve or not solve with maybe the loss of one of his women?
I won't have to wait for the next book. What was a wicked twist at the end but I probably should have expected it. Another well written storyline, along the lines of what I have come to expect from Hondo Jinx!
Had to grab this soon as it dropped, one of my current favourite series (admittedly I have 5 or 6 I really love to read but this is one of them). The story is growing and the action is hotting up, and the sex scenes are getting more ingenious and somewhat poetic in description (you will need to get about 85% through the book to get to the part I’m talking about). Can’t wait for more, keep them coming.
great series of four book.I hate writing reviews . if I like the books I read the whole series , then write one review for the series.
This series has everything I'm looking for in an action adventure series. The plot is fast moving ,the characters are fun and believable ,with the Right amount of brain and sass. I am waiting. Not so patiently for the next book in the series.
To date I've liked all of the author's books, and this is no exception. A key thing for me in books is to like/respect the MC, and Brawley is a good character. The move to Texas and the ensuing shenanigans progress the plot, and of course the reveal on Brawley's beast form (no spoilers) was satisfying. Looking forward to more.
This was a great book and what happens when you mess with a super-powered cowboy. Brawley continues to entertain me and the interactions between him and his girls continue to be better.
The plot continues to be interesting and engaging. Looking forward to reading the next book.
This a enjoyable adult urban fantasy series that is definitely worth a read, each book of the series continues from were the previous end so you do have read them in order to know what is happening
This next chapter in the Saga of Brawley was a serious action piece. Non-stop plot development and even more members of the harem. I love how distinct every setting and all of the characters are. Great work Hondo! Now write MORE!!!!!!
I'm sitting here and I can't wait for the next one being from West Texas I know the kind of land and stuff that's there he detailed it pretty well with a A humorous way
Yet another great entry in the power mage series! If you love action, a great story, fantastic characters then this is the series for you. The story has really built up and created something epic!
Power Mage 4 expands on the interesting premise of the series. Brawley, working to open up all his strands and getting strong enough to defeat the Tiger Mage. This time he goes home to West Texas though.
Another great book I think he series. Finished it in two sittings, would of been one but hey I have a life. I can’t wait till book 5, hurry up Hondo don’t make a brotha wait!
