Darius Foroux (pronounced as Da-reeus Fo-roo) is the author of 7 books, and the creator of 6 online courses.
He writes about productivity, business, and wealth building. His ideas and work have been featured in TIME, NBC, Fast Company, Inc., Observer, and many more publications. Until now, more than 30 million people have read his articles.
While reading this book, I have decided on what to do with the toxic people in my life who I cannot avoid, what to do about the passive aggressive people in my life (again who I cannot avoid), some basic changes I can make regarding my work problems and also what I need to do about the negative side of me.
The best from the author and my most favourite self help book of the year.
I feel if you really need to read something at a price of less than an overpriced cup of coffee that would actually make you see some basic truths about yourself, get this book.
Really enjoyed this. Any practicing stoic will love it. Perhaps you may not learn anything new, but you will feel inspired to make a few changes and tweaks to your life.
Remiantis D. Fouroux knyga "What Takes to Be Free" išskyriau pagrindinius principus, kuriais vadovaujasi laisvas žmogus.
I mainly look for 4 elements in a self help book:- 1. Defining a clear area of improvement the book is gonna deal with 2. Guidelines to follow 3. Thoughts, ideas and perspective i could not have found someplace else. 4. Self improvement doesn't stop with completing/closing the book.
This book did a good job in all of the above.
In the beginning I did feel this book is seemed to repeat what I know and have read elsewhere, but in the author's defence the first part is a discussion on what freedom means. In part educating the reader freedom means different things to different people.
The second part dealt with the price of freedom. Everything in life has a price - tangible or intangible. Topics like comfort, lie, mindless entertainment, incompatible people, fearing money, expectations and a lot more!
Goals are achievable only via plans and the third part helps you define your freedom plan.
I could relate and imbibe concepts of part 2 & 3 more as I was clear on what my perspective is of freedom and why I wanna achieve it.
Either you are going to like this book word by word or you are going to abuse author after reading through few chapters. I finished the book and liked what author said, I made a connect.
The book might leave you in pain because it is practical, naked and brutal. It will make you believe that the world is not a fairy tale and will also make you realise why it can't be.
Book #90 Completed: What it takes to be Free – Darius Foroux #myread4change #read2lead #read4life #books #Freedom #selfhelpbook #whatittakestobefree
“Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.” – Sigmund Freud
The word freedom has been used everywhere and yet if you ponder over what it means to you, you will be amazed at the vacuum we feel inside. And so we avoid this question by getting busy being busy.
Darius claims it is very much possible to live a free life, as long as we are clear what it means to us personally, and are willing to put in the work it entails.
The book is divided into three parts. 1) Awareness – To know what freedom means. 2) The price – which needs to be paid upfront in full. 3) The Plan – Make a plan, get to work, and make amends along the way.
Few 🔑 Ideas –
• Living the way you want means suffering voluntarily. People will get upset with you, may even abandon you. You have to do hard things. But on the other side of suffering is freedom.
• Avoiding Pain – When you’re free from the fear of suffering, you can do what you actually want. And it turns out that what we really want requires some suffering. Think about it. Nothing worthwhile in life comes free.
• Lies - You don't have to lie about who you are, what you like, and what you do. Just be yourself. If the price of being honest is judgment or sadness, so be it. You’ll still be free. That’s the real prize.
• Don’t be attached to your ideas - A lot of people defend their beliefs because they become their beliefs. When someone attacks their ideas, they feel they are attacked. They need to defend themselves. That’s the opposite of being free.
• Debt & Financial Cushion – Darius reminds that nothing can keep you captive in work you despise more than debt. Avoid it like a plague and build a financial cushion so you can live on your means.
Few 📌Quotes –
1. Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility. – Sigmund Freud
2. Ideas are great, but useless without execution. Life is full of challenges, and positive thinking alone will not help you, but preparation will.
3. Although many of us claim to have a desire for freedom; our actions rarely reflect the pursuit of a free life.
4. The truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable – James A. Garfield
5. For every minute you remain angry, you give up sixty seconds of peace of mind – Ralph Waldo Emerson
It is not every day you will read a book with this combination of honesty and wisdom. The book is not an end in itself but a beginning. Hopefully the beggining of taking the reins of your life. Give up control on things who don't matter and instead focus on putting to practice measures that will help you 8n years to come.
What would your answer be if I asked you what freedom means to you? . This book will help you understand 'Freedom' from a perspective you had not thought of. As you start reading the book, you would want to call the author a crazy person or be open-minded to read and understand what he has to say. . I fell in love with how frank the author was in his book and put forwards everything without sugar coating anything. As I turned the last page of this book to finish it, my definition of freedom changed. . The word freedom has been used everywhere. If you ponder over what it means to you, you will be amazed at the vacuum you feel inside. Our fast-paced life had not given us enough time to ponder upon the meaning of these simple words that we so loosely use in our life.
Darius claims that it is possible to live a free life as long as we are clear about what it means to us personally and are willing to put in the effort and take action for it. As he says..Ideas are great, but nothing without action taken.
Not every day you will read a book with this combination of honesty and wisdom. The book is not an end in itself but a beginning.
Darius Foroux has divided this book into 3 parts: 1. Awareness - to know what freedom means 2. The Price - which needs to be paid upfront in full 3. The Freedom Plan - Make a plan, get to work, and make amends along the way
As you understand the meaning of freedom, the author smoothly goes on to part 2 of the book and explains the price you got to pay to experience that freedom. Once you understand and figure out this new perspective, Darius lines up exercises for you to do in part 3 of the book. These exercises will help you implement and take action to experience freedom.
On a personal note, this book left me thinking about 'freedom' day and night. I feel liberated to understand my core values and what I need to do to feel free. I'm also very impressed with the financial advice given by the author. As a finance student, I had not thought of planning things this way. I highly recommend you to read this book while I go to read the other books written by Darius Foroux. 😁
I’ve started to dislike the term self-help over the years. Maybe because I’ve been reading books from this category since those school Scholastic book fairs, or maybe because the label today feels more diluted than meaningful. To me, these books are simply non-fiction perspectives — people sharing how they choose to live their lives.
With that said, What It Takes to Be Free felt refreshingly honest.
The book has a very stoic, practical tone - no fluff, no exaggerated promises.
Darius writes in extremely simple, direct language, almost like an elder brother giving grounded advice.
He’s clear that this is his perspective - you don’t need to follow everything, but you can learn from what he’s experienced.
One idea that really stayed with me:
If you truly value your own freedom, you will naturally value other people’s freedom too. It’s such a simple thought, yet deeply impactful.
The book talks about freedom not just at a personal level, but across finances, relationships, discipline, and stoicism, with short reflections and codes scattered throughout. It’s informative without feeling heavy.
What I liked most was how relatable it felt. Many things he talks about were already familiar to me, and reading them from someone older brought a quiet sense of reassurance - not validation, but comfort. A reminder that there are others walking a similar path.
It’s a quick read, very easy to understand, and perfect for a weekend reset.
I actually picked this up last minute at Blossoms while checking out - flipped through a few pages and instantly added it to my stack. And it turned out to be exactly what it promised: short, honest, and thoughtful.
Overall: If you’re feeling constrained or weighed down by something in life, this book makes for a great few-hours read. Simple perspective, calmly delivered.
In today's hasty and tearing world, we all wanted to be free. Freedom is to do what you want and to be what you are. But Is it easy to get free?... Well it's not easy but possible to achieve. All you need is discipline and commitment to be free.
The author summarised his own theory of freedom and how he has achieved it. Though it's not happens instantly, but we need to keep going with patience. The book is well divided into 3 parts, having short chapters.
First part deals with Awareness. We are trapped in our daily lives, through our jobs, social obligation, following emotions, lack of self esteem etc.,yet striving to get free.
Second part deals with the price that we need to give up to be free. Comfort, lies, mindless entertainment, anger and resentment these are the things that weighs us down in quest of freedom.
Third part deals with action plan, author has implemented successfully achieving freedom. In this part he suggested to do planning, setting our core values, meditate, invest etc.
The book is quick read, giving the practical guide to achieve freedom. It makes us to introspect ourselves, and certainly worth reading. We can't achieve 100% liberty but we can still start our journey towards it today. I would like to recommend it to everyone who loves to read self-help books.
I like to select books from my bookshelf intuitively. I let my soul take the lead.
This is the second book I read from Darius Foroux and it came to my mind to read it during a period when I felt trapped. Trapped in places where I let the flood of my life carry me. Once those places were not in my plans to be, I had no idea how to get out of it, and this book fit like a glove the moment I read it.
It is divided into 3 parts: the first leads us to the consciousness of what liberty is and what it is not. The second part shows us what it costs to be free, and the third part is meant to help us develop a plan of action to be free.
I was under the impression that this book spoke to me in every chapter, then I decided to read it in homeopathic doses. Slowly.
I found three awesome things in this book about freedom and life recently: 1. sometimes we make choices and we fail to realize that we have made them, but we have made them and the results of our lives are because of them. 2. Doing no choice is already a choice. 3. Freedom is not cheap, for many reasons, and to be free we must let many people go. The journey may be lonesome.
We want so many things in life, but we are willing to pay the price for just about nothing. Freedom isn't free, it has a high price! Who said it was meant to be easy? Choices.... life is all about choices!
This because is an extremely straightforward book. Nothing is sugarcoated. The book is based on the theme of freedom. It starts with explaining the idea of freedom and what freedom really is. " Freedom is to live your life the way you want without hurting others"
Once we have understood the meaning of freedom, the next important thing is to know get an awarness of why you should be free? Because without knowing the why , it will definitely not intrest you to read further.
The second part describes the price you need to pay to get the freedom you desire.
Well, I expected the book would end with this, however the third part in my opinion is the best. The author ends the book with the practical tips and tricks to achieve what you have read so far.
The book is simple and brutually honest. We all would agree to what has been written however it is the implementation that matters. This book should be a part of your "Re-read category". Achieving freedom is not an overnight thing, planning with execution along with consistency is what is required.
“What It Takes To Be Free” is for people, who believe personal freedom is the most essential thing in life. It’s a practical guide, that’s based on timeless wisdom and personal experience.
Darius Foroux shares the story of how he became free, help you find out what freedom means, and shows you a way to achieve freedom for yourself.
Part I of this book is about raising awareness. Darius looks at what stands in the way of freedom and the many traps we are unaware of.
Part II is dedicated to what you have to give up to become free. You may want all, but once you realize that letting things go will make you free — you will stop holding on to everything.
Part III is an action plan where Darius shares specific techniques that prepare you to become free.
Darius Foroux shared his personal experiment with freedom. and that is the best thing about the book. also, the author doesn't want you to follow his path always choose your path wisely.
This book came to me at the right time. What It Takes to Be Free is a simple, no-nonsense guide that gently pushes you to stop making excuses and start taking responsibility for your life. Darius Foroux writes in a clear and relatable way—he doesn’t try to sound overly philosophical or preachy.
What stood out to me most was the reminder that freedom isn’t something we wait for; it’s something we choose by letting go of fear, self-doubt, and the need for approval. A short but powerful read that gave me a fresh perspective and a much-needed mental reset. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone feeling stuck or searching for clarity and direction.
Authentic freedom comes at a steep price. Darius Foroux goes through each roadblock in detail: Certainty, comfort, lies, incompatible people, fearing money, mindless entertainment, anger and resentment, expectations, debt, unwanted help, defending ideas, and forced happiness. There are many hurdles, but it is crucial to have a concrete and tangible long-term goal to aspire for, as well as the financial capacity to tide over the difficult times. This is a handbook that gets you from merely planning to actually moving and getting the job done.
Good book to read if you want to design your life in your own way, it sets you free but at some cost which everyone seeking freedom has to pay, defination of freedom is what you decide it to be like.has three sections first one introduce what freedom means, second tells you what it costs you to be free and last section gives you action plan. All over it's a short straight forward book with small chapter, if you don't know this concept then it will introduce you to freedom and if you are already on the path then you will get validation that whatever you are doing is right.happy reading
Freedom means to live life on your own terms. It means waking up in the morning and deciding what exactly you want to do that day. Living free is not a fantasy!
This book What It Takes To Be Free will lead you on the path to personal freedom. It's based on timeless wisdom and personal experience.
📍Remember 'You're the ruler of your own kingdom. You can do anything you want, spend time with people you like, and have a career that you love.'
I mean, yes it has some truths, but it has no real depth. It is a rapid-fire book with very many chapters, all written in short sentences. A lot of quotes gotten from a quote site, out of context and without the author really having read who he is quoting. A fast-paced read, but too simple and too self-help fluffy. I'm not convinced this is a good book, but I'm sure many will find it inspirational. And I did get a few things out of it, but nothing really worth highlighting except for a few obvious contradictions and bad logic the author uses occasionally.
“Freedom is to do what you want and to be what you are”
What it takes to be free take us on short ride to remind us that we are capable of achieving the freedom we want be it financial, emotional or in relationships and It attempts to prepare us on how to achieve it but we need to be willing to pay the price for what we ask!!!
Quote of interest: There can’t be any large scale revolution until there’s a personal revolution on an individual level. It’s got to happen inside first- Jim Morrison
one the best self help books that i have read in a while now. It clearly defines what the problem is, tells me upfront the price that i will pay for resolving the problem is going to be high, tells me what i need to do and how i need to do to resolve the problem. the writing is fluid and simple, no big words and ideas, simple practical easy to implement not to so easy tips. I loved this book, i hope you do to.
This book gives the reader a chance to introspect thoroughly. Yes, certain points mentioned in this book hit us harshly, we might react immediately saying that they are wrong. Stop! Open mindedness is the need of the hour, if we certainly want to lead a free life. Highly recommend book for those who are ready to accept what not to accept.
It's a book made of simple concepts. Nothing new or extraordinary. If you're already an independent, liberal, broad-minded, and even a fairly financially educated and self-disciplined person, it's like brushing through what you already know to re-gain your grasp.
But one key take away is the understanding that we often look at freedom as an outside input, but it's what you give to yourself, from within.
I enjoyed reading his work. There's always something to learn and adapt from his thoughts. And, Freedom for me is a piece of jewellery that I would want to wear every time. But, as quoted by the author, there's a price attached to it. We are so bound by the nitty gritties in this materialistic world, that we often fail to describe what freedom actually means to us?
I hope, with this book, most of us could get some clarity on what freedom for them is, and how to achieve it!
Rather 3 step to be free. A Wonderful book by Darius. This book slowly starts building ur personality albeit something can't be changed over night. However these type of books shred some light for the path to be taken. I'm pretty much convinced with first 2 steps while 3rd step is not convincing . But overall it's worth the reading. I would like to give 4 rating .
Indeed a good one. The author made me feel like I asked a question how to improve my life and make better decisions towards the life situations; and he provided me with an academic book with practical solutions, examples and ways to deal with our present, past and future. Hats off. Must recommend this one to read at least once. p.s. you will surely read more than once 🙂
A simple book that added a lot of value into my life by providing us with related life examples, new perspectives and life exercises to follow to try and change our lives, not by much, but by too much. I really liked the definition of Freedom Darius brought and it goes inline with my definition of Freedom.
