Scorchwood Supernatural Penitentiary is Hell. Literally, it’s in Hell.

Of all the things to end up in jail for, embezzling wasn’t what I thought would bring me down. I’ve got a pretty healthy arson and murder hobby on my down time. White collar crimes never go to Scorchwood. I should have been given a fee and probation at most. Something is going on. My cell mate, Skoll is an Alpha wolf in for manslaughter. He wants me to meet Roman, a vampire and Amduscias, demon who is really shifty about what his demonic form is.

Something fishy is going down in Scorchwood with the elementals. Skoll’s last five cellmates were elementals who were framed for white collar crimes. Amduscias is cellmates with one of the worst elemental women in the entire jail and she is not pleased I’ve made friends with him.

Something is going on. Someone is framing elementals and sending them to Scorchwood. But they made a mistake framing me. They didn’t know about my little hobbies before they sent me here. They didn’t know about Fergus, my fire dragon.

There’s so much I don’t know about why I’m here, but there’s so much they don’t know about me too. I’ve made friends in Scorchwood and I don’t call myself Elemental Batman in secret for nothing. This should be fun.

Oh Boy

The writing was very elementary. Almost every sentence started with “she” and the dialogue felt choppy and unnatural. It was repetitive with many info dumps. This read more like a first draft tbh. The characters were interesting and the overall story had potential, but the execution was sadly lacking and unfortunately took me out of the story because of how bad it was. :/

This was a really good start to a new series. I love when the harem is mixed with supernaturals of many types and this is no different. What do you get when you throw a demon, vampire, fire elemental and a wolf shifter together in a paranormal hell prison? More sexual tension than one can handle that's for sure. It certainly doesn't help that birth control is not a priority down there so remaining abstinent is pretty much the safest bet. Serafina has been wrongly convicted of a crime she didn't commit and it's up to her and her men to discover the why and take down a corrupt system. Easy peasy! I'm curious where things will go from here but I was real happy we learn what and who Serafina is at almost halfway through and it did not become some big hidden dragged out secret. Ready for them to all escape so she can claim her men!

This is only the second book I’ve read by this author and she did NOT disappoint! She has this way of writing where you literally can’t put the book down. She brings to life and incredible new place that you can’t help to love. The story is easy to follow along with. Beautifully written. The characters are all great. Love the dragon. Can help but seeing yourself right there along side of them. The cliffhanger is no joke though. Massive. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book. I definitely recommend this story and this author!

Wow such a good story. I claim Fergus. Like mine!!! Once of the first stories I have read from this author. And holy wow it’s really good. Little slower burn which is perfectly fine with me. Yes that ending... cliffhanger!!! But I don’t even care. I want the next book!!! Phenomenal storyline!!! Definitely a must read!!! Loved this story so much going to see other series by this author. Highly recommend!!!

This is book 1 and be ready for a cliffhanger! I loved the characters and the way they all entertwine is fantastic!! Book one was more of a lead up and world builder with minimal spice. The angst is there and I'm sure book 2 will have much more in store.

Whew..I "read" all 3

I was torn about leaving a review. Normally I leave one if I feel a book is so bad I can't finish or so good I want others to enjoy it. This series was just meh.
There was very little character interaction or dialog. Everything is described in the characters head and reads more like a tech manual then a story. It makes it difficult to connect with them and develop an interest in what happens to them. The three stars are for the plot line. It was interesting enough that I was willing to skim pages at a time to find out what was going to happen. Its like the author had a wonderful outline for a great book but not the ability to weave it into a story. 3 stars for possibilities taking off 2 for lack of execution.

Flame on

Serafina has a dark side. She has no problem letting it out to play, either. But what she's on trial for is something she didn't do. No murder charges, no arson charges. Nope, she's here for embezzling from a charity? Wth? But, her cellmate is pretty nice for a murderous wolf, and the heavenly looking vampire is no slouch in the kill department, either. But that demon next door, when it comes to murder and mayhem, he may win the prize. Now she just has to keep the voice in her head to herself and figure out why elementals are being herded to a death row prison in Hell for white collar crimes. But, if a fire elemental has to be locked up, what better place than one named Scorchwood, right?

Spoilers ahead.
So, I read the Monsters series first. And they mentioned characters that originated in this series, so I picked these up. A lot of the same elements are here: monsters locked up, mysterious birth circumstances, people disappearing (although not to fights this time), and monsters being adorable. This realm leaves as many questions as I had about the other one.
*So, the whole fae can't be with humans is because of a regime change? But, the highborns can open the portal? So, why didn't they come back and kill the elementals when they realized they weren't dying off?
*Why does the whole prison run without guards, but no one questions when they appear to haul off prisoners?
*In a supernatural prison, you're going to have powerful prisoners. The powers that be aren't curious as to why a demon hasn't just walked out the door? Or worried about being slid a powerful prisoner who could break out? For no other reason than if stories escaped with the prisoner then this little inner prison crime ring would be found out.
*Is the monarchy based on magical strength? Because, if 1 family overthrew another once, it could happen again.
*Being purist snobs is 1 thing. But knowing humans breed like bunnies and even just a single generation could bring back fertility, and not utilizing that resource is stupid. And, it's not like they aren't born without abilities. Elementals prove that. They could even skip humans altogether and just pick some elementals to woo. Then power on both sides, less risk of null babies.
*How old is Serafina? I thought 29, Fergus mentioned bio dad came through the portal 34 years ago. Did he have an extended stay? Because another conversation made it sound like he was just there long enough to knock up her mom. Possibly unwillingly. But the time seemed specific, and her age didn't match that.
*I'm guessing that only the fae are having fertility issues? Because vampires, wolves and demons were specifically mentioned as unable to produce kids with humans. And no mention of population waning. Did they come from other realms, too? What are their cultures' histories?
*The places Amd listed were in latin. A human language. Does that mean that demons taught humans latin? That would be hysterical with so much of religion being passed down in latin.
*In her monsters series humans didn't seem aware of supernaturals. In this one a street rat knew about elementals and fae and others. Without being part of a family where such info would be handed down, that would be hard to come by. As well as finding jobs that only hired elementals. How exactly do you fit that on a resume? And why would an accounting firm hire specifically people who could control elements? Also, are these humans more aware of supes in their midst?
*If a demon could come and go as it pleases, why wouldn't they leave and just come back to spy? Or snoop while there since he couldn't convince 1 of his friends to leave? A few hundred years he's been there and he doesn't know about a research wing, or where the guards are listening in at (think like a monitoring room, screens, headsets) just that they are, but he knows where to stash bodies at?

While as entertaining as the other series, there are inconsistencies, just like in the other one. I like uncowed heroines with attitude. I enjoy strong male leads that understand consent and aren't alpha-holes. And I adore a book where there's a great one liner on every page. I rolled over the misunderstanding of boob jobs, retail chains and how porn has changed over the centuries. But there's also some very bothersome editing issues, dropped words being the biggest.

JB has another hit with this new series starter. The characters are well-created & written. They are easy to connect with and imagine yourself along for the ride. Scorchwood Penitentiary is in Hell, but it's in the frozen, uninhabitable region. From the description alone, you know it's a place that nobody wants to be in.

Serafina is a fire elemental who has been framed for embezzling money, which is funny because she would never steal money. She's never been caught doing what she's actually guilty of--murdering wrongdoers. What should have been a slap on the wrist turns out to be a lengthy sentence in Scorchwood. When she gets there, she's put in a cell with Skoll, an Alpha wolf in for manslaughter. He knows that he can't keep her safe on his own so he takes her to meet Roman, a vampire and Amduscias, a demon. Together they come to the conclusion that something is going on at Scorchwood as all of Skoll's previous 5 elemental cellmates were taken from the cell never to be seen or heard from again. Serafina's dragon spirit guardian, Fergus, is able to go see what is going on, but he has to leave her to do so. He knows that his feelings for her are forbidden, but he can't help the way he feels & hopes that once she realizes that there's more to him than she knows that she will accept him. When they find out exactly who Serafina is, all Hell will break loose, but that will be in book 2.

I did not want to put this one down. This one has everything in it that I have come to expect & love from one of JB's books. A strong female lead who takes no $!@# from anyone and HAF alpha males who will do anything to protect those they love. This one does have a small steamy scene in the shower as none of them want to go all out while in prison. It's a slow burn, but it will definitely end up hot. This one ends on cliffhanger which definitely leaves you wanting more.

Serafina is convicted of a crime she did not commit. They never did find out all the things she really did. Serafina will be spending her sentence in Scorchwood Prison. Serafina is determined to find out who framed her and why. She will exact her revenge on them.
Once she gets to prison, her cell mate is Skoll, he is a wolf shifter. Serafina is told to trust him. So she goes and meets with his two other friends. She is not sure what is going on, but she will need help there. Serafina meets Roman, the vampire and Amduscias the demon.
They all start talking, it turns out that there is a pattern with elementals being sent there. They decide to see what is going. They all feel the pull to on another. Serafina will have a problem with the lone elemental at the prison, what does she have to do with it. She will also learn the truth finally about her family, from her guardian.

This is was series started off with a bang and kept getting better. You want to see what is going to happen next with Serafina and her guys. There is so many different layers to the story. Only gave a some things that happened, but will not go into detail. You need to read this book. This is a reverse harem, but it only adds to this story. Can't wait for book two.

`Hell’ is in danger of freezing over!

It’s seriously cold at Scorchwood Penitentiary for Supernaturals where Serafina has been imprisoned. Scorchwood is known as `Hell’ because people are sent there to die. Slowly.

Back `topside' Serafina appeared to be a mild-mannered bookkeeper. But in reality Serafina is hot. Really Hot. She is a fire elemental who fries evil people in her spare time. Until she’s framed for embezzlement, a crime she did not commit.

Her only friend is an invisible Fae fire dragon named Fergus who acts as her secret guardian. Having grown up an orphan, Serafina is gratified to be passionately befriended by 3 sexy prison inmates, reverse harem style.

In addition to Fergus, Serafina now has a wolf shifter, a vampire and a demon on her side. So the odds for survival in `Hell’ are looking up. But they desperately need to find Graves, the psychotic doctor who is torturing and killing inmates.

Then the inmates will be running the asylum. What could go wrong?

It certainly couldn’t get much worse!

Chained and Confused has a great plot line but gets bogged down at times with fantasy world building of Fae, Demon, Werewolf, Vampire, Elemental culture, history etc. TMI. This story would also benefit from more vivid dialogue and action.

This book is amazing! JB weaves an excellent story that sucks you in and never lets you go! Serafina is a fire elemental who finds herself in Scorchwood prison for a crime she didn't commit. There she meets a wolf shifter named Skoll, a vampire named Roman and a demon named Amduscias. The men vow to protect her and soon they realize that she is their mate. She also has a guardian, Fergus, who has been in her mind since she was 16. Soon, they realize that something nasty is going on that is causing elementals to be framed for crimes and brought to Scorchwood. They must save Roman from a wizard's spell, find out why someone wants Serafina's blood and figure out why they want elementals. While Fergus is searching for answers, Amduscias is questioning a water elemental and Skoll and Roman are with Serafina, something is sent through the prison that knocks all of them out. Serafina awakes to find herself in a lab with a very creepy wizard staring at her. He has learned the truth of her Fae parentage and it doesn't look good for Serafina.

Underwhelming

I rarely write reviews for all the books I read, I usually write for books I love and think everyone should read or if the book is so bad I couldn't finish reading it. I don't make a habit of leaving books half done especially if I like the premise behind the story. This book read like a first book sometimes does for authors just starting out which surprised me because I liked the Fortuna Academy series that this author wrote. I did finish the book keeping my fingers crossed she'd fix some of the writing before the end, that never really happened I kept reading because I liked the over all plot and wanted to see how things wound up. I'm not sure if this need editing or a slight rewrite the main thing that bothered me was the characters constantly repeating information we had already gotten sometimes within sentences of them saying it or a different character would repeat the same information. This happens alot, I'm hoping she fixes it in the later books because I did enjoy the characters enough to want to know more. I'm not saying don't read this book just be prepared to feel like it's an unpolished copy.

Serafina -- a half-human/half-Fae fire elemental protected by Fergus, her fire dragon -- is surprised to end up in Scorchwood Supernatural Penitentiary for embezzlement. There were tons of things she DID commit that would have gotten her here, but white collar crimes like embezzlement don’t get you sent to Scorchwood. Something wasn’t right here. She needs to find out who set her up and for what purpose.

In prison, she meets Skoll, an Alpha wolf and her cellmate, who introduces her to his friends, Roman a vampire, and Amduscias a demon. As they discuss the situation, they find a pattern where elementals are being framed for white collar crimes and sent there, just like Serafina, for something they didn’t do. And as they work on figuring things out, they are drawn to each other.

Lots of things are going on in this book, but the reader will be intrigued and delighted as the author makes it all come alive! Grab your copy and enjoy – and be ready for the cliffhanger ending. Book 2 is right behind and promises even more!

This first book about Serafina the half-fae by JB Trepangier was a very dark, intense, and very entertaining reverse harem read. The characters, Skoll, Roman, Amduscias, Fergus, and Serafina, include a wolf, vampire, demon, fae guardian, and fire essential half-fae royalty, which is the all the more interesting when they come together to try and solve a mystery going on in the hell-hole prison where prisoners can disappear at any time if the guards decide to take them. Of course, it also leads to a very interesting multiple-party sexual dynamic as they attempt to pleasure each other without actual intercourse penetration. However, readers fear not for the author manages to describe in some very vivid and graphic detail their sexual encounters. My only complaint is how suddenly the book ends, and damn right, the author should apologize for it. I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series, and hope the author does not make us wait too long for it. This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Booksprout.

Suspenseful
“Chained and Confused” is a slow-burn tale of Sarafina who is the half-fae daughter of the heir to the fae throne. She is thrown into Scorchwood Penitentiary, which is in hell, for a minor offense. Chained and Confused has a suspenseful and intriguing storyline that bursts with drama, action, and enticingly sexy chills delighting the reader. This tale also gives the reader an enthralling romance with steamy chemistry that bursts on the pages with its intensity. The characters are well-written, complex, and authentic with depth and traits that blend and flow, transforming into genuine approachable personalities. The scenes are vivid and intense. This is the perfect beginning to this series. I’m excited to continue finding out more and more about Scorchwood!

Not as good as I had hoped

The story starts out well enough, with a story line and plot, but segued into sex and mushy feelings about each other, which was fine except I wanted more of a story than the mushy mushy lets sleep with each other, sharing, worries about all three (really 4) being her fated mate and exhibition sex. I'll admit it has been a while since I read the book, and I do remember liking it... I just got a bit impatient waiting for the story line to continue... guess I just wanted a bit more story than I was getting, in fact the book ended way too soon. I am not even sure there could be a good ending if the series is only 3 books... especially with how little story was actually in the first book.

Fun series with a little bit of cross over.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

FMC is abandond as a baby and is then brought up by nuns. they abuse her and one day when she is about to get breat, she burns the church down. thats when she realizes she has elemental fire power. later on she decides to avenge those who cant stnd up for themselves and goes after rapists and murderes to burn them alive. That is until she is framed for fraud (which is one of the few crimes she didnt commit) and gets sentenced to the worst super max prison there is , and its in hell. thats where it goes down hill. she meets her mates and they soon figure out there is bad stuff going on. The story seems incomplete and like huge chunks were cut out of it. If written better, this would have been a good book but it seemed weird and incomplete and moving too fast and too slow at the same time. I didnt want to pay for this so i decided to DNF it.

Holy Hell! What do you get when you mix a Demon, a Vampire, Werewolf, Human/Fae, and Dragon? One HELL off a tantalizing mess!!

The world created by Ms. Trepagnier is absolutely AMAZING! The characters are too die for, the dialogue is superb, and the chemistry is such that you can hardly wait to see what happens.

The entire time you're reading this book, you only have one, well two, thoughts in mind, and they are where can you find yourself some Alpha males as tantalizing as the four portrayed in this book, and when the HELL is the next book in the series coming out, because as soon as this book is coming to an end all you want is to curl up, hiding in disbelief that it's actually over - even for a short period of time.

I relay liked this RH story; I liked all characters and story development. The only think I did not liked was cliffhanger in the end; I am not fan of cliffhangers and usually decline to read books with one. But here the story description was interesting and I did not regret it. It was fluently write; I had no problems in following the story and was not bored in any part of book.
In this part, hot times are just announced (I have no other word how to describe it) and because of justified reasons… But even this announcement was hot and enough (surprise for me, because I like my romance as dirty as possible).
I am looking forward to next one in series and really hope it will justify this suspense :-)

Some of JBT books are steamy and some have a slow build-up. This one will have a slow build-up. I know once the steam is finally released it will be so good. Already the line up is interesting, a vampire, a demon, and a werewolf in prison in hell feel drawn to protect a half-human/half-Fae fire elemental who has an invisible Fae spirit as a guardian. With the world set against them and they keep reminding the reader how they won't be having sex in a dirty prison, the tension is palpable. Really can't wait for the next book in the series. Lucky the author was kind enough to mention it won't be long.

I loved, loved, loved this book!! Serafina has been sentenced to Scorchwood Spernatural Penitentiary for something she didn't do, and she's determined to find out who framed her and why. While there she meets her mates, Skoll (Alpha wolf), Roman, (Vampire) and Amduscias (Demon). This book wonderfully written, the plot flowed smoothly from page to page, and the characters are just fabulous. It's filled with twists and turns, secrets, adventure, and humor. An absolute must read and I can't wait to read book two.

I enjoyed this book and knew it would end in a cliffhanger. I would have liked to have seen a little more ass kicking action but i understand having to get everyone’s backstory in place. I feel like book two is going to be a lot more action packed and I can’t wait. This books is about an elemental who kills bad guys that get off to even the score. She’s floored when she gets arrested and convicted for embezzlement and is completely innocent. What is normally a slap in the wrist lands her in jail that’s housed in Hell where the real fun begin!

Liked the story, not the writing. Essential information about characters backstories, workings of the world were provided via internal musings of the characters. However these musings felt artificial. I also expected the FMC to be warrier: having lived on the streets, involved in illegal activities, framed to be send to prison are all reasons to be warry on your new environment. Yet following gut instinct she opens up to the guys quite easily.. I am not even sure if she realises all the work Fergus has done to keep her save and away from those who can sense her true birth.. So yeah, I will continue reading but not totally in love with the series (yet?).

Eh…I mean, it wasn’t terrible

2.5 disappointing stars

I don’t know, the premise of this book sounded really cool. I was excited to start reading it. Unfortunately, the story wasn’t very good.

The personality of the characters didn’t seem authentic. The vampire started acting like a vulnerable child. The ‘badass’ fire elemental started coddling all her men in a way that didn’t seem natural. Everyone kept letting Jasmine get away with shit when they should have just killed her. Why the hell did they let her walk away with seraphina’s blood anyways?

I just felt like everyone should be a lot more badass, violent, and bloodthirsty than they were. It was a let down.

Paranormal, RH, MM, and MF story.
Listening to audiobook, the narrator is good on female voices, but her male voices are confusing and sometimes sound like the female voice.
Audiobook could be better with a good narrator. I am able to ignore this a bit and focus on the words and build it in my imagination so soon I can enjoy the book.
It's fun, spicy, sweet, and honour in the MCs book.
It's a mystery as to why elementals are being set up and sent to hell based prison, and with the mystery, there are hidden secrets.
The FMC is a fierce badass who had a hard childhood but still managed to gravitate to knowing the good over the ugly. She's also not a shy fire batman

First I want a sexy shape-shifting dragon to guard me. It's like avatar the last air-bender mixed with fae and it literally in hell yeah you heard that right. Even for a slow burn it gets pretty steamy cue the bad joke. This book is so awesome and the way they don't get the human world kills me. I laughed so hard I couldn't get enough of this story I'm glad she started on book 2 because now I know why she said me may riot that ending was perfect. Also I agree about big chain stores I think everyone's fought the urge to end all Wal-Mart's lol.
