Greatest Works of Rabindranath Tagore

Rate this book
Greatest writer in moder Indian literature, Bengali poet, novelist, educator, and an early advocate of Independence for India, Rabindranath Tagore won the India's first Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. The Tagores tried to combine traditional Indian culture with Western ideas. Tagore was the first Indian to bring an element of psychological realism to his novels. His writing is viewed as spiritual and mercurial; his seemingly mesmeric personality, flowing hair, and other-wordly dress earned him a prophet-like reputation in the West.

This volume consists of a novel, a memoir, selection of short stories and collection of 103 poems called Gitanjali.

Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West."

Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.

This hardbound edition brings together the translation of some of the best works of Tagore. There are 25 short stories; the poems collection, Gitanjali; an incomplete biography, My Reminiscences; and a novel, The Home and the World.

DISCLAIMER:
I DON'T THINK I AM COMPETENT ENOUGH TO REVIEW THE REVEREND, SIR RABINDRANATH TAGORE.
I THINK NO ONE IS!

And if you ever doubt why Freedom is important? Why Humans matter and not nations or religions, you have to read Tagore! His verses. His prose. Everything.

The Short Stories
They are wonderful! All of them. They span over different genres- sarcasm, horror, tragedy, spirituality, and comedy. There are some grammatical/printing errors which appear only in the short stories and can be easily ignored.

GEETANJALI
My personal experience has been that it talks about spirituality without being religious.
It binds you to your spirit but doesn't cages you in religion.
He allows you this freedom, because he himself believed it to be of utmost importance.

My Reminiscence
A biography which doesn't indulge in vanity.

The Home and The World
A Parallel comparison of a family with the nation at the verge of attaining its independence and the bloody partitions that would ensue. The constant dilemma of choosing between the path of peace and taking up of arms to snatch away the rightful claims.

I knew that he was also called "GURUDEV", but now I know Why!

It's one of the good classic collection of work written by Rabindranath Tagore. This was the first book I took up written by him and it's commendable work. It's a good merger of some stories in this book. This edition is quite good as it has a good translation of his work.
