Addie isn’t like other girls; she has thoughts and opinions and time travels back to 1880 by accident. Ben Hunter is the gruff ranch foreman she knows is responsible for the death of her father/grandfather (it’s weird) and despite her forty-five “he’s my enemy”-s she can’t resist riding him into the sunset. But are things the way they seem? (No.) Did Ben do it, or was he framed by an angry cow? (🐮) Does it all wrap up nicely with every plot hole filled and end tied up? (No.) Will I regret calling it Yeehaw Outlander? (No.) Is there a reliable amount of men not understanding the word “no”? (Yes.) Check your expectations at the door and move along, little doggie, to the batshit world of Give Me Tonight.

Tras leer la sinopsis lo primero que pensé es que me iba a encontrar un libro de Kleypas ambientado en Londres de mediados del siglo XIX, lo típico de la mayoría de sus novelas pero aquí me he encontrado algo muy distinto.
Creo que esta es una de sus primeras novelas (escrita en 1989) se nota su pluma, no tan depurada como la que tiene actualmente pero bastante buena y curiosamente se decide por una novela de viajes en el tiempo ambientada en Texas. Así que me quedé un poco descolocada pero me ha sorprendido, la novela tiene sus fallos pero es muy entretenida.
Addie Peck vive en la Texas de 1930 junto a su tía enferma; huérfana desde muy joven ha sido criada por su tía Leah siendo su única compañía pues ella misma se ha aislado del mundo. A sus veinte años Addie es una joven enfermera independiente, ama a su tía con locura y tiene unos sueños muy tórridos con un extraño joven...

No había leído la sinopsis cuando decidí leer esta historia, y, a diferencia de lo que estoy acostumbrada con Lisa Kleypas, no me encontré con los salones y las mansiones londinenses, sino con una historia ambientada en Texas y, además, de un viaje en el tiempo.

La ambientación estupenda, como siempre. Pasamos de la época del jazz, en la que las mujeres fuman, beben y gozan, en general, de una mayor libertad, a un pueblo vaquero cincuenta años atrás, donde las mujeres no expresaban su opinión y eran poco más que un adorno para sus maridos. El contraste para Addie, la protagonista, no puede ser mayor.

Adeline, Addie, vive con su tía Leah, ya mayor y gravemente enferma. Lleva tiempo velando por las dos; trabajando para ganar dinero y sostenerlas; tonteando con los hombres, pero sin comprometerse a nada serio. En el fondo, no se ha permitido a sí misma vivir como la joven que es, puesto que prefiere pasar el tiempo junto a su tía. Cuando esta fallece, se ve transportada de repente al pasado, al cuerpo y a la vida de la que fue su tía abuela Adeline. Poco a poco tiene que afrontar el hecho de que aquello no es un sueño y de que todo ha sucedido por una razón, salvar a su bisabuelo Russell de ser asesinado.

Aunque viene de un mundo avanzado, futurista, Adeline se adapta a la perfección al pasado y, excepto por alguna que otra expresión y el hecho de que le gusta expresar su opinión, casi termina por parecernos que no pertenece a otra época. Quizás por eso el personaje no se me ha hecho tan interesante, aunque tiene cierta fuerza.

Ben, el protagonista masculino, apunta ya maneras de lo que serán los hombres que Kleypas nos presenta en sus novelas londinenses. A pesar de todo, no es un personaje redondo. Tiene un pasado que le ha influido bastante en su forma de ser, puesto que él procede del Este y ha estudiado en la universidad, aunque se comporta en todo momento como un auténtico vaquero; es arrogante y orgulloso, pero al mismo tiempo sabe ser dulce y tierno, apasionado y seductor. Su relación con Addie se nos presenta de una manera preciosa, amándola con devoción y tratándola como a una igual. Los momentos entre ellos son intensos y apasionados.

Lo que no ha terminado de gustarme de la historia ha sido el final un tanto abrupto en el que nada queda cerrado a satisfacción. No sabemos qué provocó el viaje en el tiempo de Addie ni como tuvo lugar, ni qué pasó con la verdadera Adeline de la época; por otro lado, ella no logra cambiar el pasado, y Russell muere sin que sepamos al final quién fue el causante de su muerte. Para mi gusto, deja muchos cabos sueltos, centrándose, más que nada, en la historia de amor de Ben y Addie que, a pesar de los pequeños rifirrafes, queda muy enmarcada desde el inicio.

Es una historia agradable, muy romántica y entretenida.

This is one of Kleypas earlier books and it shows. Badly.

The prototypes for her later (and much better) books are there,the strong and driven man,the headstrong woman etc.

But its not the same Kleypas who wrote "Dreaming of you" or "Devil in winter" She evolved since she wrote this book.

I couldnt bring myself to like Addie,she was supposed to be the nice girl,but she has at least one inner monologue about how the other women are so simple and narrowminded,only caring about the household duties and such. The only one she can talk about serious things(politics,art,science etc) with is a MAN. *rolls eyes*

I guess the author wanted her to come across as an intelligent woman...instead it backfired and made her seem like a stuck-up little girl.

Creo que me esperaba tan poco de este libro que me he encontrado más.. jajaja
Lo compré sin saber ni que era de un viaje en el tiempo ni que transcurría en el oeste, género que tampoco me suele gustar mucho.
A ver, sobre el tema del viaje en el tiempo no voy a opinar mucho, lo cierto es que no se explica ni cómo ni el porqué, pero también es cierto que no las suelo leer porque no me cuajan nunca jajaja. Sobre la ambientación, hay muchas cosas que chirrian y no acaban de cuajar....
Sobre la historia, no voy a negar que a mí me ha gustado, no es, ni de lejos, lo mejor de la Kleypas y, de ella, siempre se espera mucho más. Pero la historia ha conseguido engancharme y, sobre todo, me gustado que no sea predecible.
Creo que es de sus primeras novelas... pero ya se ve su maestría para construir protagonsitas masculinos.

Me encantan las historias de viajes en el tiempo, de hecho tengo una shelf dedicada a ese género. Pero este libro es bastante pobre en ese aspecto y en muchos otros: la ambientación está muy floja, el protagonista es blando, y la heroína es insoportable.
La protagonista viaja al pasado, y uno de los puntos en los que más molesta es que es una feminista que cree que sólo puede tener conversaciones inteligentes con los hombres. Las mujeres de esta novela, aparte de ella obviamente, sólo cosen y bailan, mientras ella se opone a todo porque #mujerdeotrosiglo #empoderada #rebelde. Y el héroe la sigue como si ella fuera lo más, next.
BTW, el tema central del asesinato de uno de los personajes y sobre el que gira la trama, no se resuelve de la manera que una espera, porque la protagonista es una idiota que no piensa y pierde montones de oportunidades por creerse la mejor.
Estoy releyendo "Dreaming of you", para sacarme el mal sabor de boca.

Disclaimer: One of my guilty pleasures are "Harlequin" novels. It's one form of literary junk food for me, especially with red wine [or any alcohol really] or copious amounts of hot tea. It relaxes me. I also use the word Harlequin to describe romance novels that are not necessarily published by the Harlequin company. I've been reading romance novels since I was 12, and at the time, it was the hottest forbidden thing ever, until I found hardcore erotica/fanfiction. LOL I have learned to read romance novels and not think about it too critically with my feminist analyzing, because it is just an indulgent fantasy for me, but at the same time I can't completely still that part of my brain and I think that is pretty healthy. I will try not to go on feminist rants, since this is in no shape or form YA. I might eventually go through romance novels and review with a feminist view, but that might take the fun out of it for me.

Things I liked: It was your stereotypical romance novel. Fiery, sexy, feisty heroine, but not too feisty. The sex scenes were purple prose, trying to avoid mentioning by name or even slang words for any of the genitalia/sex acts. It amused me greatly. I am probably going to be posting some excerpts to weepingcock because it was lolzy at times. The main love interest was hot and a bit of a cocky asshole. Those are my guilty pleasures in romance novels. The allure of the bad boy and all that. There was also a murder plot and a murder. It also takes place in Texas in the mid-1800's or so on a ranch. Also a wedding at the end of the book.

Things I Disliked: The time-travel was never fully explained or I didn't catch it. It was the only thing that really threw me off the plot. I love time travel in novels, but there has to be at least some explanation to it, or I start to over-analyze it. Over-analyzing and red wine do not mix. LOL

Main Romance Novel Sex-Tropes used: No-no-no-yes with the main love interest; there was some forced make-out scenes by the main character and the man who plotted to kill her father- also some attempted rape thrown in. I feel like I should warn for that. Also virgins having amazing, non-awkward first time sex with no pain/discomfort [I do realize that not every woman's first sexual experiences have pain or discomfort or really awkward, but I feel like it's rarely written about in romances/erotica, but then again it is a fantasy world].

I probably shouldn't be writing reviews after drinking a lot of beer, but everything looks legible. Happy fourth by the way.

I am so totally conflicted over this book. A few parts I loved, most of it was boring, some of it was sad, some made me mad. I went in not expecting much because it was an older novel and I’m used to her more recent work and writing style.

I really think this book needs to state somewhere it’s a time travel. Some people hate them and avoid them. I like them, but I was so confused for the first 50 pages and had no idea what was going on. It’s probably enough to get enough people to put it down right there. The heroine essentially has two timelines that are merged, I guess, because honestly the whole time travel element was not done well or to completion, in my opinion. It tried to pull together at the end but I left the book still feeling a little...unresolved? Still I liked the ending better than Deverauxs A Knight in Shining Armor 🤣

Addie is the heroine. For most of the book she’s Addie from 1880 that lives with her family in a large Texas ranch. Ben is the hero, a maverick hired to help run the ranch and make decisions by Addis’s father.

I really feel like I can’t talk about much without spoiling the book. The things I didn’t like were the way Addie acted and adjusted after moving through time. I felt a lot of the scenes and things that took place in the book were totally annoying and unnecessary. The way she just went with everything bothered me. However, I just LOVED the hero and heroines interactions. Loved it. I found myself unwilling to just quit the book and instead briefly skimmed the nonsense towards the end and just read their interactions. I really enjoyed the hero. I found the heroine unlikable at first but she grew less annoying as the book went on. There’s not necessarily consent issues with the hero but he is rather aggressive. I guess borderline. He’s not a gentleman. He kisses her roughly when she says no. That’s fine for me in a fictional romance. He’s not rapey though like many older novels.

A few triggers for this story, although not the main characters - abortion is briefly discussed as well as a stillborn baby/miscarriage.

So overall definitely not the Lisa of today. 😉

Although there were times the story dragged as hell, I enjoyed it very much. I loved Ben's character, his loyalty, stubbornness, pushiness and devotion to Addie. If I could I would gladly partake in this time travel "experiment" too.

Otra de esas novelas que la propia Kleypas ignora en su página web. En mi blog la consideré una antigualla prescindible y es lo que hay: salvo que seas fan de Kleypas y quieras decir que lo has leído todo, no merece la pena. Hay un viaje al pasado de Adeline, se supone que para intentar cambiar algo que ocurrió, un par de asesinatos, cosa de poca monta,… Ben es el vaquero que se convertirá en su interés amoroso. Pero vamos, siendo de 1989, sigue el esquema habitual es decir ella que no, una y otra vez, que me dejes, lucha físicamente, hasta que él consigue forzarla y entonces se rinde, y ya todo se supone que está estupendo. En fin.

2.5 La idea me atrapó desde un principio, pero convengamos que no es una originalidad después de tantas historias sobre apariciones en otros tiempos.
Creo que la arruinó bastante con una protagonista que no se enfoca en lo importante, que cree que es muy inteligente pero no lo demuestra para nada. Que siendo que no recordaba, perdió todas, TODAS las oportunidades que tuvo (y fueron varias) ni mucho menos las propició, para enterarse de cuáles eran los planes para asesinar a su padre. Claro que la autora pretende hacernos creer que es imposible otra forma de acción de alguien TAAANN inteligente con estas palabras “—No puedo ayudarte a menos que me lo cuentes. «¿Contarte qué, que viví en el futuro durante veinte años y que descubrí que mi padre actual había sido asesinado? Ah, y no sólo esto, sino que...” y aquí detalla todos los puntos en que se ve incriminada, pero teniendo al enemigo creyéndose aliado, ¡LO ESPANTA! Lo ahuyenta y no le pide un simple recordatorio del plan, una simple pregunta de cuándo lo harían o si estaba todo en orden con quién lo tenían planeado para que suelten el nombre.

Me calenté... le bajo una estrella!

Wow!! ¡Qué decepción! Acabo de terminar de leerla y tenía expectativas para un giro imprevisto con algo que quedaba suelto. Pero no...

Cada vez que la repaso para ver si me había perdido de algo, le quiero bajar más una estrella!!!!

I liked this book alot, even though it was an early Lisa Kleypas and different than what I have come to expect and love from her.

This is a story of time travel, second chances, and redemption. Sort of.

Adeline Beck is living in the 1930's and considers herself a pretty enlightened contemporary woman. She supports herself and her aunt as a nurse and is quite independent. She tells her aunt of an old man who appears to be stalking her and her aunt recognizes the name that others in the town have given to her. He killed her grandfather which led to the downfall of the entire family including the ranch which fell apart after his death. This man, Ben Hunter, disappeared and is back after 50 years.

Her aunt is suffering from cancer and Adeline finds her dead one morning. She is devastated. While grieving on her front porch, she finds herself transported back in time 50 years into the body of her great-aunt, Adeline Ward, who had mysteriously disappeared one day before the murder occurred. She was never found, according to the stories her aunt had told her. She realizes she has been given the chance to prevent her grandfather's (now father's) murder and to correct mistakes she learns she has made. Along the way, she falls in love.

The story has a lovely HEA and is wrapped up quite nicely. I'm glad I was able to find an original copy and read it.

Kleypas vuelve a encantarme con esta novela ambientada al oeste. Juro que jamás se me hubiera cruzado en la cabeza algunos sucesos que ocurrían en la novela, así que me sorprendió por un lado. Me gusto tambien que haya caracterizado bastante bien a los personajes e incluso no deja de lado algunos secundarios que no tienen desperdicio alguno (por lo menos).
Las dos únicas cosas negativas que encontré en la novela fueron dos cosas. Primero, lo lento que se desarrollaba la historia. Vale, reconozco que Kleypas se ha lucido con la novela y todo (motivo del cual ha tenido que esplayarse más de la cuenta), pero en toda la lectura las cosas se pasaban de manera tan lenta que casi pensaba que no iba terminar nunca. Y segundo, el final. No me convenció del todo en como terminó la historia. No sé. Como que me esperaba un poco de acción para variar, pero bueno... Si la autora quiso terminar la novela así, que así sea.
De todos modos, esta novela me ha gustado. Lo mejor de todo es que es independiente y no forma parte de ninguna saga. El que quiere arriesgarse con Kleypas, que quieren leer una historia ambientada en el oeste y no quieran leer sagas...
Pues les recomiendo este libro.

The plot devices and concepts in this book was quite out there. There were several untied loose ends...and the time travel/reincarnation scenario was too convoluted to make sense...but man what a love story....the chemistry, longing, and love between Ben and Addie was worth enduring everything else. Addie was a romantic feminist through and through...and Ben was encouraging and understanding of her outrageous demands and behaviors. I loved it. Goodread :)

I'm a big fan of Lisa Kleypas but I really struggled with this older book. I didn't like heroine's snap judgment of hero that she carried on so long. A third of the way in I skipped 100 pages and she still thought negative of him. I gave up. Addie is told Ben was bad and she sets out to prove it.

Did i miss the ending? Is she stuck in the past? Does she come back? She goes back tp fifty years bfr. She is the spitting image of her great aunt. She has a sister, Caroline who is her future grandmother. But she has a miscarriage which is her mother. So, wouldn’t she be erase from existence? She saved the man she loves from, acussed murder. And that’s it? It’s all there but then the ending is just there. Because she got there either Mmc , he is not accused of murder but her dad still died and now she”s married?

Es una historia que me atrapó desde muy pronto. El personaje masculino me encanta. La ambientación. Introducirme en el mundo de tejas y los ranchos ha estado interesante pero me esperaba un final más espectacular. Con tres estrellas ( casi siempre doy 5😁) no quiero decir que no me haya gustado pero me esperaba un desenlace y final más llamativo. Y se me han quedado puntos por resolver y hablarlo entre los protagonistas.

Adeline Peck dlm kesedihan mendalam krn kematian bibinya dan tidak menyangka dirinya terlontar 50 thn sblmnya menjadi sosok bibi buyutnya, Adeline Warner.

Adeline alias Addie nyaris tidak bisa menyesuaikan diri sbg Adeline Warner. Jelas sekali kepribadian mereka berbeda spt bumi dan langit tetapi tidak ada yg curiga atau merasakan perbedaan yg terjadi pd diri Addie. Hanya Ben Hunter, musuh bebuyutan Addie, yg merasakan perubahan tsb adalah hal positif, dan mengubah rasa sebal Ben pd Addie menjadi cinta. Addie pun tidak kuasa menolak bibit² cinta tsb. Sayangnya Addie tidak bisa mengubah takdir kelam Russell (ayahnya).

Romance ini lumayan unik krn digabung dgn time travel, dan misi Addie adalah mengubah sejarah keluarganya. Ide dan gaya tulisan tante LK di buku ini sangat memikat dan tidak membosankan. Justru makin mengundang penasaran krn ada unsur suspensenya juga, saat kita diajak utk menduga-duga siapakah pembunuh yg sebenarnya. Sejujurnya saya kangen dgn gaya tulisan author yg jadul spt ini krn lebih terasa berisi ketimbang karya author yg belakangan ini yg terasa spt romance receh dan sangat standar.

Proses benci menjadi cinta dlm hubungan Ben dan Addie sangat menawan dan masuk logika, dan perbedaan² diantara mereka malah makin membuat mereka cocok spt kancing jepret alias klop banget dah. Satu²nya kekurangan novel ini adalah masa sih satu keluarga, satu kota bahkan musuhnya juga tidak menyadari bhw Addie bukanlah Adeline Warner, gadis manja dan licik. Semuanya terlalu mudah dan menerima begitu saja perubahan dlm diri Addie. Inilah hal paling tidak masuk akal tetapi justru sangat vital. Seandainya ada satu saja tokoh yg peka, kemungkinan novel ini akan sempurna.

Hace algunos años leí este libro, es un bonito viaje en el tiempo, pues Addie vive en los años 30 junto a su tía a quien cuida por estar muy enferma en Texas, luego de la muerte de su querida tía, se queda completamente sola hasta que un hombre empieza a perseguirla por las calles de la ciudad, una mañana repentinamente despierta en otra época y otra casa.

Addie es transportada al hogar de sus antepasados tatarabuelos, y alli se reencuentra con el extraño hombre de la ciudad, con quien sin proponerselo termina enamorada sin remedio.

I've read this book a few times. This has been one of my favorite stories ever, even if it's not so logical and there are some big gaps. But what I can't get enough is of a simple se love story, with it's ups and downs, which takes into account the way of thinking of the moment and with a realistic view of the problems to face when loving someone else.

I admit, I was very hesitant to read this since it involves time travelling and I’m not a big fan of that subgenre, but more than the love story, the story itself is interesting.

Adeline was born into two lifetimes, one woman, two memories. She started out 50 years after, in 1930, as a semi-modern woman, working as a nurse and tending to her dying old Aunt Leah, who took care of her since she was 3 years old. Then we see glimpses of her memories from the past, at first of things she doesn’t understand. She found out that her family used to be rich, but that her great grandfather was murdered by a man whom they all all trusted.

Then we’re brought back to 1880, suddenly Adeline wasn’t Addie Peck, but Adeline Warner, the daughter who was the catalyst for their family’s downfall. I have to say, I love the cloak and dagger mystery of this novel more than the passionate love story between her and the foreman, Ben Hunter (the alleged murderer), although that’s really a cherry on the top since the declarations and love scenes were kinky and hot for its time. I do find some thoughts and dialogues to be a bit disorganized, and could have been executed better, but all in all this is a very memorable read for me.

My only beef with this story is Adeline’s cowardice at the end. I would have preferred if she came clean. And an epilogue of what her life would have looked like would have been nice, since past and future were prominent themes in this story. 4.5 stars.

3,5. Well Lisa surely does know how to write a perfect, real man we all want so badly. Ben was such a honey! It was not mindblowing but sweet anyway. And I also noticed that her random “unexpected” plot twists at the endings, just to add a few more pages to the book, had much more sense in the 80’s. I think they are well thought out and less striking.

Early Lisa Kleypas time travel romance. This story had a potential to be better than it was. I am a big fan of LK and love her later work. Some of the things which did not work: What happened to the original Adeline? The most we ever get is a report that someone saw her disappear into thin air. Why? Where did she go?
Caroline's baby died. That baby was supposed to be Adeline's mother. Why have the baby die? How is Adeline to be born now? Adeline never tells Ben the truth about who she is, why she had a sudden complete personality change, or what the precious Adeline had planned. If she did, maybe she could have stopped her father's murder. The people who paid Watts to commit murder get away with it.
There were too many loopholes and the ending was not the resolution it should have been. Aside from that, I didn't buy into the romance. Sorry. I guess it's a good example of how the craft of writing can improve with practice.
