Survival requires sacrifice.

The world irrevocably changed after the hellhounds and fey appeared. Most people didn’t survive that first night. Dad had said we were lucky we did. I’m not so sure about that anymore.

With her father murdered before her eyes and her faith in the remaining humans shaken, Brenna reluctantly accepts sanctuary in Tolerance, a safe zone managed by the fey. The wall keeps the infected out. But it also keeps the humans in…with the very creatures that caused the world to break.

Big, grey, and ruthlessly deadly, the fey strike fear in the hearts of men and women alike. But Brenna finds one more intimidating than all the rest. Scarred and angry, Thallirin watches Brenna with an intensity that makes her relive the events that followed her father’s murder. She knows what Thallirin wants, and she’s never going to be used like that again.

Tormented by her past, Brenna sees no possible future other than eventual infection or starvation. There is hope, though. Her community is abuzz with a newly discovered way to protect women against the disease that’s turning people into zombies. However, it doesn’t come from a needle.

It comes from sleeping with the dark fey.

1 star (warning: mention of sexual assault in the review)

I really enjoyed the concept of this series, and the first three books were by far my favourite. But, this book really bothered me - a lot more than any of the others.

I like that Brenna was strong-minded and didn't only rely on one of the fey for her survival. I liked that she had some skills to defend herself, and was willing to teach other humans to do the same. This was really positive, especially when you consider her backstory, where she was forced into sex for food for her and her brother at a previous human-run survivor camp.

The part that really bothered me was that I felt like she forced herself upon Thallirin. He clearly didn't want to be with her until he was certain that she was 18 - but she continued to try push things, no matter how many times he said no. This really doesn't push the message of 'choice' and 'freedom' that this book promotes, to me - no means no, regardless of which partner says it. Her excuse was basically that she knew he wanted it, so it was fine...which is not consent.

I know you don't have to like the main characters to enjoy a book, but this completely took the main point of the book away from me. Having a choice goes two-ways.

Based on other reviews, I don't think many other people see it this way - and that's okay too. This was just my personal opinion for this particular book in the series. Again, the first three books in the Resurrection Chronicles were my favourite and I would definitely recommend reading them.

I just spent some time rereading this whole series just in time to find out what Brenna and Thallirin were going to get up to. I really like Brenna but sometimes parts of this book... aka at least the first 25-30% rubbed me the wrong way.... also I HATE Mya...

Brenna came into the picture of course in Eden’s book where Eden and Ghua helped rescue the family after her previous captors kidnapped Brenna and her brother Zach while murdering their father and leaving their wheelchair bound mother alone to die. It’s obvious that Brenna’s week long captivity was bad and it’s all left some scars. So I get why she doesn’t want to be bothered by anything male, makes sense. And Thallirin’s interest in her is troubling for her, especially since she is technically still 17 and all and the fey of course consider her a child. I get that they are long lived and all but waiting somebody out to reach 18 is kinda creepy. I mean she is weeks away from her 18th birthday so it’s not that bad but still it’s weird.

The problem...

Everybody keeps pushing her towards Thallirin and all the fey believe she belongs to him which irks her. Even after going to Mya to ask for help with getting them to leave her alone Mya basically refuses to help. And makes it pretty clear that she’s always going to take the fees’ side on whatever is wrong. I hate Mya. It’s nothing new I disliked her from the 2nd book and I doubt I could ever like her but that’s another story. The way Mya acted was completely disgusting. And the way Brenna was seeing things like staying in town for a girl meant that eventually you would be pushed towards a waiting willing fey seemed to be true. My heart broke for her most of the time. The funny thing about this whole thing was that everybody else was the problem not so much Thallirin. I mean yeah he was following her around and trying to overprotect but he never did anything or said anything.

But since this is a romance.... obviously things would turn around I wasn’t sure if I could get behind that after everything from the first 30% of the book. Brenna was definitely treated unfairly and they should have been applauding the fact that unlike the people of Tenacity she’s willing to pull her weight and go out and find food and do all the things any man or fey would do. Her willingness to do things while the other girls with fey boyfriends just sit home being taken care of made me start looking at them different. I mean obviously Angel can’t go anywhere and Cassie is the town’s unqualified doctor plus she has two kids. I get it the world is scary I would probably want to hide too but it just seems like nobody does anything.

Anywho Brenna makes an effort to understand Thallirin and his intentions after a few blow ups and a lot of issues. I don’t think her behavior was ever wrong and she had been through some things that made life difficult, I admire that she was trying to move forwards and not dwell on the past. Not an easy task especially considering how young she is. Once she managed to get Thallirin to actually talk to her it was easy to like him he never really seemed unlikable really and of course he had no experience with girls. The two of them are kinda adorable together once things get going. I absolutely adore Brenna’s family and her mother just says the funniest things.

The story isn’t just about the complicated relationship though, Brenna is trying to find herself after her trauma and the people of Tenacity that I still find lazy and stupid learned that the real monsters aren’t exactly the Fey and hellhounds and zombies there are other more human things that are wrong in this world gone wrong. I often wonder though if those rather prejudice people will ever change and maybe the two towns can get along better. I didn’t like Matt much before but he’s not so bad he is trying to hold things together under difficult and unusual circumstances and he’s obviously not trying to rely on the fey to do everything for the lazy humans he wants them to do things for themselves. And of course there are always shenanigans with the infected and their level of planning now is very troubling. I was always waiting to see what they might do next and wondering what they might try in the future since there seems to be an endless supply of them.

All in all it was a great addition to the series and I like another Brenna and Thallirin and their family. Can’t wait for the next one to learn more about Hannah though since she’s being hovering in the background since the 3rd book.

What a fantastic addition to this series! I think a new reader would appreciate this book much more if they start with book 1 in the Resurrection Chronicles, as it starts with the main world building, even though it's evolving thru the series. Trust me, it won't be a hardship to start at the beginning, I loved every book in this series so far. We see a lot of the other characters from previous books, so still feel all the connections in this world. I knew from all the interactions with other characters that these 2 had in the previous books in this series, that Brenna & Thallirin's story was going to be fantastic! It was not a couple combination I would have thought up, but it definitely works! This book was everything I hoped for Brenna & Thallirin! :) There is a lot of intense & emotional moments (not just between the couple, but in the story in general). I think this book elicited a few more tears from me than most of the books in the series (not ugly crying, just tears) as well as some pissed off moments at stuff going down in the story. The humor definitely helps offset that heavy side of the story that's so emotionally charged. There's a lot of humor. The smoldering connection between the couple before they relent to the attraction is intense. Brenna has been thru so much in such a short time, and I'm so glad she's come thru it all in the end to get a HEA with the big guy. She's definitely a strong character to come out the other side. Thallirin's been such a misunderstood fey from the get go, that's been totally portrayed as a "bad guy", though I saw a much different side to him in this book. He's definitely redeemable in this book -at least because of Brenna! When he does talk, he's intense and makes every word count! I really just can't get enough of these grey fey men!

book deals with sexual abuse, minors*
It seems like im in the minority in this rating...but here goes!

Where do I even start with this book. Its rare that I hate the lead female character in a book. But Brenna disgusted me on so many levels. I understood that she was sexually abused in the past, shes broken and dealing with an apocalypse...but the way she treated Thallirin was upseting. In the beginning she called him stalker, perv, pedophile...at every turn she belittled him. She ranted and raved that she wouldnt choose any of the fey as a mate. She berated Mya about "forcing her to choose". BUT NOT A WEEK LATER SHES PRACTICALLY SHOVING HER VAGINA IN HIS FACE! UGH.

Being a minor, Thallirin wanted to wait for her to be eighteen before going further. She forced herself on him, at every turn she pranced around naked, sat on his lap etc. After all her spouting about being forced, she kept pushing herself on him and he kept saying no. In my book thats sexual harrasment.

I saw no emotions in her, the only reason she made her moves and joined with him was because she wanted to stay alive...I dont think she cared one bit about him. My heart broke for Thallirin, all he wanted was a partner who loved him for him, scars and all.
Ive loved this series so far, but this book was sooooo off putting.

Action packed

Thallirin finally gets his story alongside the feisty Brenna and it’s a story full of action and drama. It’s another great read for fans of this series, with many twists concerning the future of the humans and fey still unfolding. This is a four star read for me as it isn’t one of my favourites from the series, I would have loved some chapters from Thallirin’s POV and more opportunity for him to talk about his past.
As a side note this story does contain sexual activity and sexual assault of the main character who is 17, this many be distressing to some readers.
Looking forward to the next book and hoping it’s a little further into the future so we can see how things are changing in Tolerance.

WOW! JUST... WOW!!!

I think this is the best one so far! Don't get me wrong, the other books in the Resurrection Chronicles are very, very good. And the first three with Drav and Mya are my favorite, but this book gives those a run for there money!
I love the banter between Brenna and her family. It had me cracking up! This book made me cry, laugh, and hate. Not hate the book, but certain characters in the book.
I've read this book twice! As soon as I finished it, I started it again. And now I'm going to go back and re-read the whole Resurrection Chronicles from beginning to end.

Thallirin - Yea, he's one that would have scared me, but not Brenna. She kept trying to put him in his place. I have to give it to him though, he was relentless, as are all the fey. Every word he spoke, what little he did say, showed his feelings for Brenna.
Thallirin's inability to give up on Brenna no matter what happened or what she did to him, because of what he DIDN'T see in her eyes when they first met, had me saying "awww" and made me want to hug him and prove him wrong about how he thought everyone was thinking about him.

Brenna - What can I say, she's bold - very bold and straight forward. She had me cringing at times. Melissa did a great job with her. At times I wanted to hug Brenna and make her feel better, other times, I was embarrassed by her, and I was also laughing at what she did. I loved her boldness and the way she brings things up with Mya, and how Mya reacts.

Zach - I love the protectiveness of Brenna, the way he makes sure she's okay, and sticks by her. That's how a brother should be. I think he's the coolest little brother.

And what's up with the zombies!? I wanna know what's going to happen with them. I'm intrigued! Can't wait for the rest of the books to come out so I can find out what is going on.
I was so excited to see that certain people had gotten what they deserved for the way they treated people. Afterwards, my heart clenched at the reason why Thallirin asked Brenna why she was still there.
I also love seeing old characters in the new books Melissa writes. For those of you who don't know, Melissa Haag is her YA books and M.J. Haag is her adult books. Her writing in both is AMAZING! If you haven't read any of her books, I would, if I were you. You will be hooked from the first paragraph. I was!
M.J./Melissa Haag is my favorite author. When you read this book, you will know why.

4.5 stars — Well, this one helped my slump! There’s nothing like a favourite series to do that sometimes…

I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about Brenna, because she is just so forceful and angry and off-putting. But I actually really appreciated her journey. I know this will sound weird, but I really loved the kind of rape that was addressed in her story — the kind where it’s coercion, where “technically” you consented, but it’s still rape. I think people need to remember that rape comes in all forms, and traumatizes people in different ways. Brenna had a lot to work through, and even though the timeline was a bit fast, I still believed it. It doesn’t hurt that the tension, anxiety and fear that they’re living in in this new world speeds up emotions and all that stuff.

So in the end I think I really liked Brenna…especially the Brenna she became, the one who learned and grew. I appreciated that she confronted the misunderstanding stuff head on…or at least after her eyes had been opened to it. It was kind of refreshing. And she was both strong and vulnerable.

The romance was a bit slower in this one as a result. But I felt so much for Thallarin, even though we never got his POV. Someday I will go back and binge read this series again, so I can remember all the nuances, but he really went through a lot. And while he wasn’t as funny as some of the other fey, my heart went out to him with his loneliness. And in the end I really enjoyed the relationship that they developed once they actually started talking and learning.

Lots of crazy action in this one — both of the infected variety, and of the human variety. AND then there was the other romance in the background! That was adorable, and I really loved it as well.

The other thing that I strangely love is that the other friendships aren’t without missteps. That previous characters can still make mistakes with the best of intentions. Because that felt more real. So often in these series we see past characters who already have their HEA, and they’re just a bit too perfect, you know?

I was feeling…I don’t know, like the books I was reading were good, but just not sucking me in as powerfully. But as soon as I started this one I remembered how much I’ve come to love this series, and I was absorbed. Maybe I just need a lot more non-contemporary in my life at the moment.

I loved this story. It was entertaining but also very sincere. At first, I was worried about reading Brenna's story but I'm glad that I did. There are a lot of feels, so be aware!

Brenna is a survivor. She has survived the hellhounds, the infected and other human survivors but not without a price. After being rescued, Brenna lives with her family in Tolerance which is one of the safe zones. The Tolerance safe zone is protected by the dark fey. They are big, strong, grey and intimidating. Brenna wants to make sure that she is never a victim again and works toward being as independent as possible. One of the fey, Thallirin watches Brenna which makes her feel angry but also scared.

This was a hard story for me. I understood where Brenna was coming from and was right there with her when she was trying to get the "adults" to listen to her about her. I cried while she explained her feelings. Please be aware that even though the attack on Brenna has already happened when this book starts, she does describe it and if you are sensitive this may trigger you.

Her mom and brother were awesome. Thallirin, once you got to his motivation and his feelings for Brenna was actually super sweet. The way Brenna and Thallirin end up working toward each other was wonderful and very touching. I loved how their story ended. I definitely recommend reading this book.

Each of these fae becomes more amazing than the last. While Brenna is trying to prove her worth and her mother is trying to find someone who will protect the family, Thallirin is watching her closely and hoping to find a way into her life. She's been through horrific events since this started, and her trust in men has diminished exponentially. But the fae don't give up. And when a group from Tolerance sets out to find supplies, they are in for a serious awakening. The zombies are not what they used to be, and Brenna may need Thallirin more than she's willing to admit.

I just fell in love with this story as I have all of them from the beginning. Brenna is so strong-willed and willing to learn how to defend herself. And Thallirin is so persistent. She has a hard time trusting men after what she's been through to survive. And Thallirin has his own demons to overcome in order to find his place among his kind as much as in human society. I was so glad to see them find their happy ending because they worked so hard for it and deserved it so much. I don't know who the author is going to write next, but I hope she's got more than one story left in this world. I can't help but find these fae endearing, and I want to see all of them happy.
This was such an exciting and awesome story, and I can't wait to find the answers to so many of the questions that have come about since the start of the series.

Damn I love this series!

I have absolutely adored every book in this series so far and this one was no exception! Brenna and Thallrins relationship was so different and complex compared to any of the other couples. Brenna brought a new depth to the role of FMC in this series and Thallrin was brought face to face with the much darker side of human beings. The Fey are extremely protective of their women and finding out what had happened to Brenna had to have been extremely difficult for him to even comprehend.
We also got a to see new sides of some of the past characters, mainly FMC #1, Mya. And I have to say, I was not pleased with what I saw. Mya completely ignored everything that had happened to Brenna, only weeks before, and was still insistent on manipulateing and pushing her towards the Fey. I know she has a lot on her plate, and I could understand subtlety doing it, but when Brenna came to her and pleaded for her to stop, Mya still didn't let up. Instead sending Drag to do her dirty work by keeping Brenna on base (most likely so she would be exposed to less human males and hopefully fall for a Fey instead) Mya needs to get a serious reality check and learn how to actually listen to the people she's insistent on leading, which means she needs to let the Fey figure out their own relationships and stop trying to play match maker.

I like how the author keeps the character from past books consistent with their actions, even if it might make readers dislike them (Mya, Drav, etc really got on my nerves in this book haha). Glad this topic of non-consensual sex is touched upon in such a realistic manner. As we know from the past book, Van raped Brenna through coercion, not through physical violence, but it is rape nonetheless. The aftermath of this plays out in a very natural manner. Brenna's fear of the male species, her reactions, her emotions all seem very realistic to me. Unfortunately, this book just seemed quite repetitive for the most part. Going on constant supply runs, having the same arguments, everyone being angry with each other, people bullying Brenna and trying to push their own agenda on her (even if they didn't "intend" to), Brenna lashing out, Thallirin being a jerk and stalkerish. I just didn't really feel connected with any of the characters in this book sadly. It took me a lot longer to get through than the rest of the series which I had devoured.

Another homerun! Demon dawn brings us back into the exhilarating world of the Resurrection Chronicles. This time we get to learn more about how the world is changing while also getting to know two fan favorites!

The plot of this book is as brilliant as all the others. The world is changing. Can the human and fey keep up with all these new developments?

All this book did was make me want more. I could legitimately live in this world for weeks without needing a break. The heat is on point and that author writes it in such a way that you feel like you have lived in the characters shoes. I would 100% recommend.

Soooo Brenna...

She was beautifully flawed and believably broken. Her strength and tenacity held her together and made her one of my favorite women in the series.

Thallirin was Brenna's equal, broken and strong, noble and caring he is likely one of the most misunderstood of all the Fae we've read about so far.

The way these two characters healed each other's wounds was so very sweet and my one complaint is that the book wasn't longer.

When Brenna's switch flipped, I would have loved to watch a slow burn that was more focused on the healing of their hearts along with the coming together of two bodies.

I get why it was written that way, but come on, you can't fault me for wanting more. 😉 Especially since I'm gonna have to wait so long for the next book. 😒

Another great story in the Resurrection Chronicles.

This one is a little darker and more serious than others in the series. Brenna has had a rough and dark past. Readers triggered by rape should proceed with caution. It’s understandable how she might make some assumptions and jump to conclusions when it seems one of the grey men develops a smothering obsession with her. But she must work past her own misconceptions and learn to not only communicate her thoughts and feelings, but teach Thrallirin to communicate his to her as well, before she can realize the depth and breadth of his hope and love for her. Great story!

It didn't get any better since my last update. Brenna was rude throughout the book and also immature. I understand what she went through and I guess that's how she chooses to cope but it doesn't give her the right to be rude and disrespectful to the people who are helping her.
Even at the end of the book I disliked Brenna despite her "change" of character. Thallirin deserved better.n
I was disappointed in this book and almost quit the series entirely. At this point I'm more interested in reading about how the survivors navigate this new world rather than the romance.
Maybe the next book will be better.

“Demon Dawn” is a fabulous addition to the Resurrection Chronicles by author M.J. Haag. Brenna is a tough young woman in a world where you must fight to survive. To survive and for her Mom and brother to survive, Brenna had to make some life altering choices which has increase her anger. M.J. Haag writes Brenna’s journey as she tries to overcome her past and to open herself up to a possible future very well. I really enjoyed reading along the journey. I’m looking forward to the next book in the Resurrection Chronicles.

Wowza!!

I LOVE this series and this book did not disappoint!! Brenna is strong and will stand up for what she believes in! She is trying to run from some shadows haunting her but she has also found one unwilling to leave her and wants to help her heal in Thallirin. The combination of these two is brilliant and I loved reading their story and perception in how life is just now for them.

If you haven’t started this series yet it is a must!! Every story is unique but intertwined and is truly an amazing read!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This series is it!! It has amazing bad as sin women and so otherworldly epic demon Fey! Then this is going to meet your every wish!

I love this series so much

Great world building
Intelligent dialogue
Well plotted
No typos

Brenna is so strong and a little broken. This is not an easy world she lives in.

Thallirin is a typical fey for this series. He’s had a bad time of it as well. He’s honorable, kind and possessive.

I loved the growth of Brenna through this book. She’s able to overcome her past and she genuinely cares for others. She’s so smart.

I highly recommend you read this series from book one. I’m thinking of re-reading the series before the next book comes out.

From the description, I wasn't as excited about this one but I was in need of a story where a guy (or alien) had single minded focus for just 1 female, ready to be her everything. It is very comforting to know that is what I was going to get.

There was plenty of inner conflict/dialogue and I do think she changed her mind a little too quickly, she seemed to go from "I am leaving the compound if you want me to give him a chance" to "I wonder what happens when I touch him" in like, a few days. Whiplash.

But humor saved the day. My favorite this time was Zach- the humor quotient was unexpected and very timely and he made it allllll better. Loved that dynamic.

One of my favorite books in the series.
Address adult themes like consent and manipulation in order to survive a bad situation.
The male MC is socially awkward at best and because of the female MC past experience, she thinks his inability to communicate properly leads her to believe he has bad intentions in mind. Once he understands where she is coming from, he checks his behavior to the point it could be counter productive to their budding relationship.
Male MC is probably one, if not the, strongest fighter among his brothers but one word from the female MC and he is helpless.

This was my least favorite book in the series. I liked Thallirin, as I do all of the fey. However, I didn’t like Brenna, at all. Not even when she stopped rejecting Thallirin. And although I liked Uan, I had zero interest in Nancy’s romance. In fact, the only regard I had for Nancy, was that I was glad that it wasn’t Merlov that she wound up with, which is where I initially thought she was headed. I hope Hannah redeems herself in the next book, because she’s another one that I can’t stand.

Great continuation in the series!

Breanna has endured many trials in her young life. After the recent death of her father, her mother decides to move on and she herself is being pursued by Thallirin...kind of. Due to her age (under 18), Brenna is protected. However, Thallirin wants her for his own. However, after he hears her tragic story, he distances himself. Can Brenna figure out what she wants? Where is she really safe? Where does she belong? Read and find out!

So freaking good! I love this series so much! After the first three books, each book after can be read as a stand-alone! But i encourage you to read everything because its so good! Zombies are getting bloody smarter and more dangerous! Scavenging for food and essentials could be your last! Huge sacrifices must be made! The romance was a slow burn and worth it! Must read!

Wow!! Total read all night long!!

This was amazing!!! We have been waiting for Brenna and Thallirian’s journey and it was soooo good. The infected got sneakier and you saw some old characters!! I love the drama/dilemma surrounding Brenna and her having a choice or not choice and how she addresses this. I love that she wasn’t immediately onboard with everything.. she kicked butt and came into her own. I love this whole series and this book did not disappoint!

The hardest, shyest Fae

I really Brenna. She and her family practice what all people should be doing, they communicate their feelings so no one gets the wrong ideas. I say practice because, like all humans, we forget things and get lazy sometimes our don't follow through. These characters are so real, it's amazing and wonderful. I'm so glad there are at least a few more books before the end.

Wow, read it in one go!

Demon Dawn is another book in this series that I could not lay down. As always Mellissa wrote it fastpaced and the story is emotional and exiting. I love how the main character just draws you in and you slowely get to understand her better.
I can't wait for the story to continue.
A well-deserved 5 stars. I loved it.

So good!

I don’t know where to even begin in describing how much I love this series or the author in general.

I’ve reread this series 5-6 times since initially completing it because it is so well written and each story just adds so much this series and this world

I won’t spoil anything but trust me, I can not recommend this series highly enough. READ IT.

Prepare for an all nighter because you’ll keep reading till the last page.
I inhaled this book like vacuum cleaner! It was so good I kept on turning page for page till 4 am! Brenna and Thallirin take center stage in this book. Their complex nature and situations are what makes this story so great and after Mya’s story is the best one!

I have LOVED this series from the beginning, but this may just be my favourite... oh, who am I kidding? I can't pick, it's like trying to pick a favourite child! I'll just say it's good, oh, so very good, my heart broke for both of them, and the ending is absolutely beautiful!

You must read the series though, they all build on to each other. I mean, you could still read it, but a lot of it probably wouldn't make a lot of sense, and you'd be missing a HUGE amount of backstory that is vital to this one, and the series as a whole. Plus, why deny yourself from reading the whole series (up to now anyway), you won't regret it!
