Rascal is a cat. My cat. I didn't ask for him, he just sort of... happened to me. But that's just how it works sometimes, isn't it?
When a mysterious mewling package arrives in the mail, one busy young woman's life changes forever. Rascal lives up to his name, filling every day with wild adventures and long naps: brave expeditions into closets, fierce battles with curtains, and wrestling with slumbering giants... Sometimes she's tempted to throw him out the window. He's lucky he's cute.
Over 128 pages, Jean-Luc Deglin paints a purring portrait of one unforgettable black cat, an elegant inky swirl in a world of striking blue tones. Hilarious and heartwarming, exasperating and enchanting, Rascal captures the full range of emotions that come with keeping God's cutest killing machine as a pet.
If you love cats, or dream of having one, this book is dedicated to you. Once you bring Rascal into your life, you'll wonder how you ever lived without him.
just finished reading this with my cat, luna! 🌛✨ rascal was such a cute graphic novel. there were so many relatable and laugh-out-loud moments! i recommend to any cat lover or cat owner. it’s a quick, lighthearted read and the illustrations capture the body language of a cat perfectly! it was great to see the relationship of rascal and his owner develop. the owner was not originally a cat lover, but as the book goes on, you see her grow more and more fond of rascal. 😸
If you 're not a cat lover at all, this is a two-star book, I think. The art is very inviting, though. It's about a girl that gets a cat in a box left by her mother at her apartment door (though she doesn't see the box for days, and there was no food or water in the box)! If you can read on in the book after this initial abuse, as I did, well, the story is of a single non-cat-lover becoming a cat lover, with some adorableness and humor. There's not much story here, but the quality of intimacy and sweetness in the drawings bumps it up to three stars for me. I liked it.
This is a cute comic about a cat and its owner. A young woman gets a mysterious package and is stuck with a new pet cat even though she doesn't want to. Her new kitten is quite the handful and the young lady doesn't warm upto him at first. The comic shows the budding friendship between a new pet owner and the pet. There's very little dialogue and more conveyed through panels. The different cat poses are enough to make you love the book. However, the book is limited to these cat poses and daily life of the owner-cat duo. There isn't a bigger plot. So I'd recommend the book for cat parents who want to see their day-to-day life in comic strips and go 'That's relateable'.
This is an ideal gift for a cat lover because it has all antics of the feline immortalized as art. The claws, scratches everywhere, spoilt winter clothes, the arrogance, being fussy, not moving when the lady has to work, the cuddles and hugs (and scratches again). A cute book.
Much thanks to the publisher for the e-ARC. All opinions are my own.
A funny slice-of-life graphic novel about a woman whom receive an unexpected devilcat in her life (You Rascal!). All cat-owners would be able to identified themselves with many vignettes. Madness, fun, and cute et al.
It remember the style of daily cartoon presentation.
Como ahora tengo mi propio cat devil, me identifique en varios momentos.
I've had my sister's cat over enough to relate to some of these - but even so, overall this comic's just rather bland and not very memorable. Neither of its core characters have too many personality traits outside of Generic Cat and Her Beleagured Owner.
Crapule, in the original French, which would make a great name for an evil cat monster.
This book is a slight, amusing offering, not a novel, but a series of one page comics about the commonplace joys and challenges of life with a cat— cat hair everywhere, neglected cat toys, cat sitting everywhere but cat bed, cat tearing around like a wild, um, cat ("Who should I call? A vet or an exorcist?").
The set-up starts with an uncomfortable situation, a big no-no in the pet world—the young woman's mother drops off a kitten, uninvited, unsolicited. The young woman did not ask for a cat but now, and worse than that, has been gifted a rambunctious kitten.
Even a cat lover such as myself will freely admit that energetic kittens are pure evil. Much of the humour of this book is squeezed from the young woman's discovery of the nature of cats.
But, like I said, each page is a new moment, there is no story, there is no real payoff, except the repetition of the idea that cats are cute monsters, adorable but annoying. Selfish, cruel, and lovable, cats are cats, and if you already know cats this book will be relatable and mildly amusing, and if you don't know cats it is you who are the real monster.
This is a darling cartoon strip about a young woman who ends up with a lovable and thoroughly annoying (and typical) little cat, and their ensuing life together. Cat owners will smile at the many familiar situations, like when she goes out in public with bare arms and is asked if she was in a bramble patch because she's been playing with her kitten. Pouncing on the covers, moodiness, hairball horrors and all the familiar goods and bads of cat ownership are covered in delightful art. This will be a good read for any cat lovers that will surely bring a lot of smiles to kids and adults alike.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.
Cute and relatable for cat owners, doesn't have anything going other than its relatability ("Haha, my cat does that too!" "Yes haha, that's what cats are like!") Feels like it'd be a popular Instagram page, not something that should be published. Objective rating would be 2 stars but it feels too low, it's not bad or offensive (and I really love cats), so 3 stars it is.
A simple tale of a young lady trying to get used to the wild and unpredictable life of a little black kitty that she later names Rascal.
It is incredibly relatable and doesn't try too hard to get into cliches while also offering a metaphorical perception of their relationship if they were just wild animals.
This little comic is a lot of fun, and Rascal's antics will be instantly familiar to anyone who's lived with a cat, especially one who's a little on the wild side.
I don't know if Rascal is based on a real cat, but I dearly hope the act of neglect that brought him to his person didn't actually happen.

Top Shelf Productions’ Rascal by Jean-Luc Deglin is a graphic novel about the life of a woman and her newly acquired cat. It is 128 pages and each page consists of four panels that succinctly deliver a glimpse inside a day in the life of a cat owner. You might be wondering if four panels per page is enough to tell a story but, surprisingly, it is. I found that, although they were all narratively connected, each page of Rascal could serve as a stand alone comic since they expertly paint a scene even with it’s limited panels. The reason for it being structured in this way is that according to Top Shelf’s website Rascal was, “originally serialized as Crapule in the Franco-Belgian magazine Spirou.”
While reading Rascal I found myself being immediately captured by every page. Perhaps this is due to the fact that I am a cat owner myself, but I couldn’t help but be touched by the endearing scenes of this unnamed woman and her little black cat Rascal. There is one scene in particular that made me tear up and countless that made me smile or laugh. It was truly heartwarming to read. I think that the art was really adorable as well, which is consistent throughout the book with blue, black, and white tones. I also felt like each expression of both the woman and Rascal were drawn really well and were successful in conveying the story being told. A scene in particular that stuck with me in this graphic novel is when Rascal is poking out from behind a door and it made me smile, because the eyes were drawn so large that Rascal looked so innocent and curious!
Ultimately, I believe this graphic novel really captures the everyday moments of living with a cat, and I think it is a perfect read for all the cat lovers out there. Rascal by Jean-Luc Deglin is out on May 10 and is available now on Amazon for preorder so make sure not to miss out on such an adorable book!

This is too cute and creative to give it fewer stars. I'm happy that I received this ARC through Edelweiss. This book is about the author and her cat. They were forced to live together after the kitten's owner passed away. And guess what, cats are really hard to live with. And the kitten's name is Rascal, I can't even. This book shows the hard part of living with a cat, but also how much fun and adorable it can be. It definitely encourages people to adopt cats. They are worth the trouble. Although I never had a cat, I have a special place in my heart for every cat I meet on the street. I'd take one in if only I could. The art was amazing. I recommend it to cat lovers and for people who want to know how life with a cat is.

This read was so cute and adorable. Has a cat parent I can relate so much to many of the panels. I found my self laughing more times then I could count and melting at the love-able-ness the other half of the time.
Basically a book about how mischievous yet cute cats are. Might as well be called Riley bc this is basically his day to day. The illustrations are adorable and every cat-fancier will find Rascal familiar and his frustrated caretaker relatable.
I received an arc of this book from #netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was so cute! It's basically a series of webcomics about various interactions between a woman and her cat and as someone who owns two cats I have to say there is just so much relatable content here. Probably every single page was something that one of my cats has done at one point and it was so funny to see them all lined up here together. Definitely recommend this one to cat lovers!
When I saw this book up on NetGalley, I couldn't resist requesting it. Rascal by Jean-Luc Deglin was one of those graphic novels that all cat lovers will relate to. Each frame shows the hardships, the beauty, and everything in between when it comes to cat ownership.
I couldn't help but smile while reading this book. I may not own a cat but they're some of my favorite animals. This book really could be used as a way to determine if you're ready for a cat. The graphics were well done, the story was engaging.
All in all, I enjoyed this a lot! If you're thinking of getting a cat, I highly recommend reading this book.
Just a quick read I borrowed off of hoopla to read over lunch. I finished the comic before my lunch, which shows how quick a read it is. Some of the strips don't even have any text, but are still successful in communicating their jokes to the reader.
Rascal is a cute book of comic strips about the author, Jean-Luc Deglin, and her cat Rascal as they go about their lives. Any cat-lover will get the humour behind these strips.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review. Cute, quick read about a cat who wins over his reluctant new "mom". I hope the 2nd book in the series will be translated to English and available on NetGalley.
