HER BIGGEST ENEMY IS BACK...

At the end of Fuzzy Navel, J. A. Konrath surprised readers with an agonizing cliffhanger: One of Lieutenant Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels's loved ones is dead. But who? Readers were left clamoring to know more.

Cherry Bomb opens at the funeral. While Jack stands graveside, tears in her eyes, her cell phone rings. It's the killer, escaped maniac Alex Kork, taunting Jack, drawing her ever further into a twisted game of cat and mouse. Because while Alex is more than willing to kill random victims, Jack is her true prey. But which woman wants revenge more?

Cherry Bomb is J. A. Konrath's most gripping novel of suspense yet--filled with twists and turns that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Wow! The sixth book took off like a rocket!

A small backstory:

Jack ended up dealing with a tragedy in the last book "Fuzzy Navel" so this book opens up right on the heels of the last book as she has to deal with an emotional upheaval along with tracking down Alex Kork as things went awry in the last book.

Alex goes on another killing spree and Jack has to get help from her friends Harry and Phin to track down Alex before she kills again, but Jack is in hot water with her job so she has to go out on her own and break some laws to track down Alex.

Alex has lots of tricks up her sleeves and lots of weapons to do whatever she needs to do to make Jack suffer. Alex keeps slipping out of Jack's reach while all the time trying to kill off people that mean something to Jack. There is quite a bit of a cat and mouse game within this storyline as the closer that Jack seems to get to Alex the further away she slips.

Thoughts:

This book was different as well as the author had every other chapter for the villain Alex and her criminal activities. The chapters go back and forth like that through the whole book.

This book had lots of the humorous banter once again and I found myself laughing a lot with this story. There was lots of action along with a fast paced storyline that kept me guessing and the author threw some twists in there as well. Giving this one five "Vindictive Villain" stars.

2.5 starts. Another typical Jack Daniels mystery, without the mystery. Before I picked up the book, I knew it was going to be about Alex & 3 of 6 about the same psycho just gets old. I was pretty sure I knew what the basic plot would be & was right, so there were no shockers overall. Specifics were pretty good though. The monkey had me chortling at times, but I have a very low sense of humor, so be warned.

I'm fairly sure where the series has to go from here, but I think I'm done, at least for now. I'll watch my friends reviews just in case something new & exciting pops. There is a chance, but somehow I doubt it.

Quite honestly, I had a hard time trying to decide whether this book deserves four stars or five. Finally, I decided to go whole hog simply because the heroine, Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels, rids herself (and future readers) of one of the villains who has been dogging her through several previous books. Frankly, it's about time. Although the action is fast-paced, the plots are well thought out and I've had a hard time putting down any of Konrath's books including this one, watching Daniels get the stuffing knocked, kicked and shot out of her time and time again and come out of it without having to take so much as an aspirin was starting to get a bit old (as is she, at age 47, for goodness sake).

There are two books remaining in the series so far, and I fully expect some other dastardly do-badder will fill in the gap. Even though Daniels has made some major changes in her life (spill the beans? Not me!), she'll probably continue to be physically tougher than nails until she's 90. And you know what? Lord willin' and the creek don't rise, I'll still be around to enjoy the heck out of reading about it.

Honestly, one of my favorite Jack Daniels' novels in the series. I won't give any spoilers for those who have been following this series, but only some basic comments on what I liked about this one.

The characters: obviously, as a series, we've seen these characters grown in various ways throughout this journey. Konrath remains true to their individual identities, and the changes or events taking place in their lives are completely in tune with what we, as readers, have come to expect.

The pacing: As always, a fast-paced novel that I absolutely LOATHED to put down once I started.

The blend of off-beat humor in "serious situations": Konrath really pulls this off well in all of his novels, IMO. And since the characterization is consistent, things that seem to come from out of nowhere somehow fit it believably well.

For those following this series, this one is a must-read.

Highly recommended!

Cherry Bomb was a fast-paced thrill ride that left me more satisfied than a drink of the same name. Jack Daniels is back and her nemesis Alexandra Kork has returned to finish the job undone in Fuzzy Navel. As Jack stands at graveside, her cell phone rings and Alex is leading the chase again. People are dying while Jack is forced to slowly track down the victims before their time runs out. The quest becomes personal when Alan, Jack's ex, and Herb are at risk. As time runs out, Jack is forced to play the game and also face internal questions that she has been running from for years.
This was the best book of the series and honestly I hope it is the last. As much as I love Jack Daniels, I think Konrath wrote a masterpiece with this one. We get the answers to many of the questions in Jack's personal life and these answers were satisfying in all of their finality. Jack is always going to be a character that I love and her supporting cast is forever memorable. The action in this book was spot-on and the humor was fantastic! Overall, this entire series was wonderful and I highly recommend Konrath to everyone I know that enjoys a great book!

3.5 this didn’t feel as good as the previous ones. Frankly I was bored of the whole Alex storyline. Also Harry McGlade, who is very funny admittedly, was just too much this time with ‘Slappy’. Good to see there will be some changes in story direction now, so I’m hoping the next will be back to the usually great form and humour that I love in this series.

AARGH!!! Why did I keep torturing myself with this series? I know that I will never give it more than 3 stars, not after the repetitive serial killer theme and one of the most irritating characters I have EVER read. Still, it's a crack, and I can't seem to stop.

So the focus here is the showdown of Jack and Alex, yeah, Alex kills more people, , and Jack is determined to end this once and for all. Harry is so GOD DARN ANNOYING and unfortunately after the event in the last book, he even has MORE scenes, and I am ready to kill him myself after his attitude in the funeral. Why doesn't he die already?!?

Then, we have Jack acting like a sorry ass. . I mean, COME FRICKIN' ON!!!!

There is only two more books in this series but I don't know if I can continue. Yeah, maybe I stop now, before I am going insane.

I just finished Cherry Bomb and I am thoroughly disappointed. Upon reading the Introduction by Author JA Konrath, I decided this would be my last Jack Daniels novel. I’ll miss Jack. Konrath told more then I needed to know prior to beginning this novel.

In the end of Fuzzy Navel you are left wondering which character met their demise. When the victim was revealed in Cherry Bomb it was not who I expected, and wished it had been anyone else. Things proceeded downhill after that revelation. Then I began to view Kork as a coward, not just a psycho sociopath sadistic serial killer. Her power over others was not her strength or intelligence, but a taser gun and duct tape. As I turned the pages, I concluded that Kork wasn’t even a good serial killer just someone good at torturing and killing. Her character was also accorded too many pages and her actions were repetitive and predictable.

I didn’t think Slappy was the least bit funny. In the end there was no understanding or sympathy on my part for Jack’s conflicting feelings toward Phin. It just didn’t make sense that she would be exhibiting those emotions toward him or anyone other than Latham at this juncture.

I wish my love of the Jack Daniel's Series had ended differently...

Up to this point, Jack Daniels has been dealing with the same psychopath so I decided to lump the reviews all together.

Aside from the first book in the series, I found these all to be very engaging. Jack started off a bit cartoonish in the first but gets very serious quickly. Each of the stories may involve the Kork family but they are all independent stories, but being a series they really should be read in order to understand the finer details.

The only character I haven’t cared for is Harry McGlade but I find he’s growing on me, much like a fungus. He’s like the clown in a circus act coming in right after some death-defying act. He keeps it all from becoming too dark. Perhaps a new serial killer will get him later? We can always dream.

I’m not a crime story aficionado but I found myself caught up in story after story so I would recommend the series so far. You’ll probably hate Harry like I did but all the other characters hate him as well.

Cherry Bomb by J.A. Konrath is the 6th book in the Jack Daniels Mystery series. Following on from Fuzzy Navel, psychopath Alex Kork targets those close to Lietenant Jacqueline Daniels. An explosive fast-paced thriller with plenty of bodies and a twisted cat and mouse game. Lots of laughs with Harry and his new pet. Unstoppable action all the way.

This series is like a car crash for me, one that I can't help but to look at even though it drives me nuts. I think these books are just ok, but for some reason I can't quite bring myself to stop reading them and I am not sure why. Jack is only mildly interesting, and most of the other characters just grate on my last sane nerve with their stupid actions (like getting a monkey???? Really come on!).

This time around Jack is just not herself, she is recovering from her fiance's death and still being stalked by Alex, the psycho. Alex is trying to hurt Jack by striking at those who are close to her and doing a bang up job too. These strikes just keep getting closer and closer to Jack eroding away at her self confidence, making the Jack that is in this book different from the other books. The cat and mouse game between Jack and Alex is interesting and just when you think Alex can't get any crazier you turn the page and say WTF.

The ending doesn't really come as any surprise, but if you are like me you are just glad that this little episode is over but are very happy for other things that happened.

Reading a book of fiction having all the elements you enjoy does not happen on a regular basis. Cherry Bomb had it all! Cherry Bomb had drama, suspense and humor.

What I like about Konrath’s Jack Daniels series is how he portrays his female cops and female criminals as real people. Konrath cleverly weaved a story around two women: Jack, a detective and Alex, a psychopathic serial killer who enjoys torturing her victims before murdering them and, if they appeal to her sexually, she tortures them while sexually abusing them.

Jack killed the only man Alex loved. Alex repays Jack by killing the people Jack cares about. The cat and mouse chase kept me on the edge of my seat. If you’re looking for a fast paced exhilarating book to read, Cherry Bomb is that book.

Susie Beck and Dick Hill brought excitement to the story and defined the characters perfectly.

What a terrific series!!!!!
I wanted to give this novel 5 stars but I found the final scene with Alex to be a complete letdown. It seemed entirely unrealistic to have a character like Alex, with such a brilliant criminal mind who planned every move, to be so easily outwitted by Jack in the last showdown.
Beyond that, this was your typical page-turning, roller coaster romp that we've all come to expect from Konrath. I also love that he finally introduced a relationship between Jack and Phineas (who I always thought was much better suited to Jack than Latham).
I recommend the Jack Daniels series to anyone who is looking for a new author to read in the adventure/mystery/horror genre. The great thing about Konrath/Kilborn (besides the fact that he is an awesome storyteller) is that he is quite prolific.
Enjoy!

Cherry Bomb
3 Stars

In the aftermath of the attack on her home and the death of a loved one, Lieutenant Jack Daniels must confront the darkest side of her soul and decide whether vengeance against the maniacal Alex Kork is worth the price of her badge and her honor.

Not up to Konrath's usual standards.

The characterization takes a weird and irritating turn. Who is the whiny woman who has taken over Jack Daniels' body? Since when did Phin become so smarmy? How could Harry McGlade possibly get even more grotesque? Why can't Alex Kork just die? And where the hell is Mr. Friskers?

The cat vs. mouse storyline between Jack and Alex Kork has gone on for far too long and the descriptions of Alex's sadism and violence are excessive and completely unnecessary. They do nothing to ratchet up the tension, and it is impossible to care about any of the victims as they are completely underdeveloped stereotypical placeholders rather than actual characters.

While this series has been enjoyable over all, Cherry Bomb is a lackluster installment and the time has come for me to take a break from Jack for the time being or lose interest for good.

The first couple of books in this series were pretty good. I've continued reading them because on my Kindle they're free. The last book, Fuzzy Navel, was pretty bad and this one wasn't much better. There are too many unrealistic killings and not much of the action is believable. In earlier books Harry was pretty funny but now he's plain silly and having him get a monkey didn't work for me.

Amazing! I loved this whole series! I'm thinking I liked it better than the Stephanie Plum books. This book has the serial killer from hell returning..along with all the characters I've grown to love. Plus a monkey that had me laughing so hard I thought I would pee myself. A Plus all the way!

There's a darkness to this book. Some troubled times for the protagonist. Be prepared for loss. Then there's Harry. Harry and Slappy. Hysterical stuff. The narrators truly make Harry's wit shine. In the end, the book strikes a good balance of highs and lows.

The book opens with a gloomy, depressing scene. Jack Daniels is standing in the rain attending the funeral of her loved one killed by Alex Kork. Alex can’t even leave Jack alone long enough to grieve. Jack gets a call at the graveside from Alex advising Alex that she is ready to kill again unless Jack can find a way to stop her.

So begins a wild chase with Jack determined to catch Alex this time and end her reign of terror for the last time. However, Alex always seems to be one-step ahead and taunting Jack by phone all the way. Jack has done everything she can to protect her loved ones. They’ve been sent in different directions with the hope that Alex can’t find them.

This time Jack is working outside the law. She has some help but Alex is leaving a trail of bodies. Her victims do not die easily. Alex is a very violent person and her hatred for Jack is intense.

Some of the characters from previous Jack Daniels books are present in Cherry Bomb. Even though Jack has sent her loved ones into hiding, a few loyal friends stick by her. Konrath adds a bit of humor to the bizarre race between Jack and Alex. A monkey even takes part in a bit of the action.

Konrath’s books are always exciting with a touch of humor and a bunch of action. Cherry Bomb is no exception. The conclusion took me by surprise. This is the sixth Jack Daniels mystery.

Cherry Bomb by J.A. Konrath

Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey is satisfying, not my favorite but satisfying. Jack Daniels the book character is a hard nosed female detective tracking a psychopathic serial killer out to destroy all who Jack loves.

Apparently in a previous book, Jack had incarcerated and disfigured Alex while killing her only love. Alex took this amiss and that is her rationale for her demented behavior.

I have only read one other Konrath book and this one was even more violent than the last one. The action was continuous with soul searching by the protagonist and introspection by the villain. The viewpoint of the villain is often overlooked and that added an interesting dimension to this book.

The plot was not too complex, revenge, horrific revenge was the theme. It was well done and a compelling read.

I highly recommend it.

I bought the first six of this series online for like $2.50 each. I no longer consider it a good deal.
Torture porn, serial killer porn? Not sure what to call these, but the gruesome detail in which Konrath describes the killers' actions and thoughts go way beyond what is necessary for the stories. For me, it completely ruins what would have been 3-5 star books.
The talent, or whatever it's called for how accurate he writes the killers, doesn't seem to apply to how he writes Jack. His writing from a woman's view fails on many levels.
As much as I love books, and even keep ones I dislike in my library, I'm seriously considering burning these so that whoever inherits my books isn't tempted to read them.

This is the 6th in the series about Jacquieline "Jack" Daniels..If you have been reading this series, you know that the last one left you wondering who in Jack's family was dead..This starts off and now you know. Jack has been after Alex (a woman serial killer) who blames Jack for the death of her brother.
Now Alex has killed someone close to Jack and is after Jack.

You meet up with Jack's partner, Herb, also at the end of the book you were wondering if Harry was her brother or not? Will Alex succeed in killing everyone that Jack loves and cares about.

As usual, this is a good humor book, that keeps you laughing and action where you wonder if Jack is going to survive.

Just eh with a shrug. I didn't really care for this one for some reason. Maybe because of Alex. It just wasn't believable to me that all these people can be killed and no one links it all together!

When her ex-hubbie is captured they had two hours to send all the cops in the city to look at the hotels that he "checked in" at. Why didn't anyone else think of finding him like she did. They could easily have found him in time.

Things just weren't believable enough for me I guess.

This series is just about over and I am really going to miss em. I have enjoyed these books very much. In this one Jack is out for revenge in a big way. She is also waiting for DNA results regarding a possible brother. Her and Phin come together on a whole new level. There is a lot of humor and many explosions going on.
