Alger, une communauté juive du début du XXe siècle. Au centre de l'action, le chat du rabbin. Tordant, le chat : un squelette à oreilles, une dégaine de poubelle, un goût prononcé pour la discussion — c'est un chat parlant. En l'occurrence, il raconte à Zlabya, sa maîtresse adorée (et fille du rabbin), la vérité sur le Malka des Lions — un cousin qui doit arriver prochainement, tout auréolé et légende. On le dit capable de dompter un lion, même les yeux fermés. La vérité, c'est qu'il a pour ami un vieux lion poussif avec lequel il a monté un numéro : le lion effraie le monde, le Malka arrive et arrange tout. Ce qui lui attire gloire et récompenses variées.

En attendant, le rabbin a un problème : le consistoire israélite de France exige de lui qu'il fasse une dictée. En effet, s'il veut être agréé rabbin officiel au lieu de "juste rabbin comme ça", il doit écrire en français — pour faire la prière en hébreu à des Juifs qui parlent arabe, note le chat dans sa grande sagesse.

Après La Bar-Mitsva, premier épisode encensé par la critique, Sfar nous donne encore une fois un chef-d'oeuvre d'intelligence, d'humour et de tendresse — trois vertus qui s'expriment autant dans les dialogues, captivants et savoureux, que dans le dessin, merveilleux de finesse et de drôlerie.

About the author

Joann Sfar (born August 28, 1971 in Nice) is a French comics artist, comic book creator, and film director.

Sfar is considered one of the most important artists of the new wave of Franco-Belgian comics. Many of his comics were published by L'Association which was founded in 1990 by Jean-Christophe Menu and six other artists. He also worked together with many of the new movement's main artists, e.g. David B. and Lewis Trondheim. The Donjon series which he created with Trondheim has a cult following in many countries.

Some of his comics are inspired by his Jewish heritage as the son of Jewish parents (an Ashkenazi mother and a Sephardic father). He himself says that there is Ashkenazi humor in his Professeur Bell series (loosely based on Joseph Bell), whereas Le chat du rabbin is clearly inspired by his Sephardic side. Les olives noires is a series about a Jewish child in Israel at the time of Jesus. Like Le chat du rabbin, the series contains a lot of historical and theological information.

His main influences are Fred and André Franquin as well as Marc Chagall, Chaim Soutine, Will Eisner, Hugo Pratt and John Buscema.

From 2009 to 2010, Sfar wrote and directed 'Serge Gainsbourgh: Une Vie Heroique', a biopic of the notorious French songwriter, of whom Sfar is a self-confessed fanatic. The film, which draws substantially on Sfar's abilities as a comic book artist through its extensive use of fantasy artwork, animation and puppetry, was released in 2010 to general critical acclaim.

Volume 2 was okay. I feel there's something off, and I'm not sure to what degree it is intentional, in the way the plot is constructed; cat's thoughts get a looot of panels, extending action time of one plotline of the volume, while the events of another plotline, of much consequence to the protagonist, will come suddenly out of the left field, resulting in an imbalance.

Dyktando pisane po francusku przez Rabina, który obawia się o utratę swojego stanowiska, tymczasem może stracić coś o wiele bardziej cennego, podobnie jak jego czworonóg. Szczególnie wymiana zdań między kotem i osłem zacna, ale nie jest to aż tak głębokie jak tom I. Kreska Sfara wciąż urzeka.

Me encanta esta saga. Es un comic de una aparente sencillez, pero muy profundo e inteligente. Alabo en cada tomo su filosofía y su acercamiento cultural a diferentes pueblos y religiones de manera respetuosa e inclusiva. Un ejemplo de convivencia y tolerancia.

A friend has told me about this comic book series, but I have never read it. Today I was at the cartoon museum in Basel with a big exhibition on Sfar. They also have a cool little library where you can read at leisure. I finished the first two volumes and enjoyed them very much. I also had a glimpse into some of his other work.

I liked the second volume a little less than the first one, as the cat does not talk all that much. But it was still good.

Lovely introduction to a little-known universe: a Jewish rabbi, his daughter and his snarky cat, living in Algeria.

Lovely drawing style: it doesn't seem very refined, but it's very much alive.

Wat een charmante reeks lijkt dit te worden. Heerlijk eigenzinnig tekenwerk dat een beetje doet denken aan dat van Fred, en volstrekt originele, relaxt plotloze maar daarom niet minder boeiende verhalen. Dit heb ik ten onrechte twintig jaar links laten liggen.

Este segundo cómic lo encuentro más sobrio que el otro. Me gusta el toque más serio, siento que ahonda más en los personajes, trata otras emociones y nos habla de otras religiones desde un total respeto hacia éstas. También tiene sus puntos graciosos. Asique, vamos a por el tercero.

J'adore Sfar, j'adore cet univers, j'adore ces dessins.
Ce deuxième tome est aussi plaisant que le premier, néanmoins je ne retrouve pas assez l'impertinence du chat qui m'avait tant séduit auparavant. Pour autant j'aime ces lectures qui nous transportent dans un ailleurs.

Po przeczytaniu dwóch zeszytów z tej serii doszłam do wniosku, że mi wystarczy i nie muszę czytać dalej, nie ciekawią mnie dalsze losy bohaterów. Podtrzymuję opinię o pierwszej części: postać kota i narracja z jego perspektywy jest bardzo fajna. Może kiedyś wrócę do tej historii.

Second book about Rabbi's cat is not as good as previous one. It's still fun to read it and I love harsh drawings but there's less of witty intelligence and wisdom so shocking in book 1. Malka's character is a bit absurd, I'm not sure if I can accept it.

The rabbi receives two letters at his home in Algeria one day, one from his cousin, the mysterious Malka of Lions, telling him he's coming for a visit, the other from France, ominously letting him know that he must pass a French dictation in order to continue as an official rabbi. He asks his cat to help him practice and when the cat sees how bad the rabbi's written French in, it offers to help him pass the test. Just as clever and amusing as the first book. — June 2011

Cuando terminé el #1 pensé que lo mejor estaba por venir. Cuando leí este segundo tomo me di cuenta de que no porque me gustó bastante menos que el primero. Pero como hoy ya tengo varios tomos más leídos, me doy cuenta de que un tropezón no es caída. Cuando leí este pensé que lo que hacía que aflojara la historia era que la premisa se iba por la borda: es una serie sobre un gato que habla que, de golpe y sin previo aviso, no habla más. Así que adiós charlas con el rabino y adiós insolencias contra toda la gente. Que la serie mejorara en tomos posteriores con el gato en la misma situación me demostró que el problema no era si hablaba el gato o no, sino la historia en sí que se cuenta en ese sfardiano mundo. No sé si hoy, pero seguro que cuando escriba sus correspondientes reseñas me explayaré al respecto. Eso sí, el Malka de los Leones es un capo.

Avec le deuxième tome, l'histoire du Chat du Rabbin est toujours aussi géniale et le style graphique de Sfar toujours aussi moche. Enfin, c'est un style original un peu brouillon que plusieurs apprécieront j'en suis sûr, mais moi c'est pas mon genre. Mais ça vaut la peine de lire cette BD ne serait-ce que pour son superbe récit.

La majeure partie de l'histoire de ce volume se retrouve dans le dessin animé, sauf l'histoire du mourant et du jeune rabbin qui demande Zlabya en mariage. Il y a quelques scènes marrantes ou touchantes mais c'est pas aussi envoûtant que le dessin animé et un peu moins plaisant que le premier volume. Ça demeure toutefois toujours une bonne lecture.

I really liked this volume; I laughed a lot and learned a bit more about this culture that is still a mystery to me

The cat is a really fun character, not really evil but not a saint. I love his point of view.

I got really attached to the rabbin and his cousin (who seems so interesting and fun to hang out with). I actually felt sad with both news and wished a happier time for him (which he did have after his first news turned out to be false).

J'adore l'histoire, les personnages, les idees etc...mais j'ai des difficultees avec les lettres dans MALKA et aussi dans tome 1. Ce n'etait pas une probleme pour KLEZMER ni VAMPIRE, mais je les ai lus en englais--je me demande si l'escritor est different?

I didn't enjoy this second installment as much as the first in the series. It seemed a bit more scattered and there wasn't always a clear narrative; I wish it would have focused on just one of the two storylines. It will be interesting to see where this goes in L'Exode.

Część pierwszą wypełnia w zasadzie tylko (albo "aż") genialny dialog kota z Rabinem, część druga jest już bliższa klasycznemu komiksowi, gdzie jest konkretna fabuła. Nadal jest mądrze i dowcipnie, ale jakby już NIE TO.

même en n'arrêtant de parler le chat décripte les angoisses du rabin, ses problèmes vis à vis des autorités françaises, l'ordre des choses, tres intéressant...et parfois amusant
