Eden's Gate #6

The Ascent

Rate this book
Book 6 of the bestselling Eden's Gate series!

As a newly anointed member of the Mage's Guild, Gunnar begins his training under Darion and Eanos. Resistance, staves, and ranged fighting are all staples of any mage, but the pride of being a member of the guild is access to a strange device that helps its members locate areas of powerful magic.

During a routine outing with another mage, a group of mysterious Magi attack and know more about Gunnar than any outsiders should. They know he's a Reborn, and they know he stole the Fellblade from the Sparrows. Worse, they've captured someone he loves.

The Magi want a weapon--an ancient weapon--for her return.

Gunnar must ascend to new heights and come face-to-face with some of the most powerful creatures in Eden's Gate if he's to get another chance at a weapon like the Fellblade. Can Gunnar beat the odds, or is the likelihood of death too much for even the whole of Unity to handle?

Let's get that path of the mage underway for real, Gunner.

Yes, well, this LitRPG is more of the same. If you've been liking the adventure before, you'll like it now. Slow progressions, bigger stakes, and we even have a save-the-princess trope.

Awwwww.

All joking aside, it's still fun and mindless, too. :)

(That's a good thing when you want a mood-lifter.)

While I enjoyed every other book, I gotta say, what a nightmare. Aside from the frequent grammar problems, the characters seem to have regressed in personality to the point where 6/10 interactions are truely cringy. I found myself shouting at the main character to just stop. Skipped large portions of dialogue because the conversations went nowhere, truly and incomprehensibly awful. Every time the MC wants to do something, essentially every single character says it's a bad idea. Every time he does it anyway. This time around, as if the author decided his main character has too much luck, everything gunner tries ends up failing miserably, and he finds himself darting from one useless and boring task to another, describing it in needless detail as if he had a word count goal he couldn't quite reach. The few fights in this book are constantly with things or people who considerably outmatch our main character and he literally gains NOTHING the entire book aside from a mask with a spell that lasts two seconds.

None of the internal monologue the MC is constantly jabbering about makes sense with regard to women, it's unreal. He is always trying to be the good guy or nice guy, but is an absolute hippocrite with regard to women. Never once does he acknowladge how insane he sounds when he's dealing with emotions related to his two (three?) love interests- He constantly feels jealous and entitled to both women without making a single honest advance toward either. The whole story is silly and takes place over like a 4 day period where he goes tons of places and accomplishes absolutely nothing. If you were hoping for some main story advancement then just wait for the next book or read the last two pages of this one because honestly that's the only thing that happened.

Honestly this book reads and feels like a filler episode to a great anime and a half-assed filler at that.

I still like the world, but I hate the MC. Most characters in this book have the maturity level of a middle school student. EVERY plan Gunnar comes up with is stupid. He gets told over and over again by everyone not to do something and yet he does it anyway. He is told to focus on his magic skills and not get distracted but he jumps from one activity to another with no rhyme or reason. The plot of the story was ludicrous to begin with

I am probably still going to continue this series but I am not really excited about the upcoming books anymore.

I wish I could give it zero stars.

Well this is the final book I'll be reading by Edward Brody as he seems fascinated by a possible harem which I could care less about. He seems to take pleasure in getting his MC killed and achieving no really progress. Keeps making the MC fight with a staff instead of with his wonderful Arcane Blade build....because reasons. It's kind of sad to see such a wonderful world turn to garbage. The Sizzler is just such an annoying character that would get punched in real life.

Why do LitRPG authors seem to have an obsession with adding sex into their novels or harems...honestly one of the biggest reason I avoid a lot of the longer running series.

I'm not going to lie, these last couple of books have been pretty brutal to read. Mainly because of Gunnar, he seems to be getting more stupid and whiney after every book. He simply makes terrible decisions and never learns. Moreover, his indecisiveness about Keysia and Adeelee is annoying. In my opinion, it's obvious who the better choice is but a part of me wants him to simply pick Adeelee because Keysia is way to good for his dumb ass.

It was a good story though very little progress was made within the main story. Gunner is still pretty dumb and stubborn. Lots of failure in this book. Some random LGBT diversity character is added and it's a pretty disgusting stereotype of one though he isnt in much of the book. A whole different method of fighting is forced upon Gunner for no apparent reason. He again uses overpowered things to get more overpowered things just to give the overpowered thing away again so he isnt "overpowered" but in the stupidest way. I did have fun reading this though even without progress. 4 stars

I really enjoy the world and most of the characters in this series. However, I have found that I have enjoyed each book a little less than the previous book. I have also come to realize that I have not shouted at a book this much in a long time.

My frustration comes from the Main Character (everything else is enjoyable). The MC is not stupid, but his judgement seems to grow worse with each book. I enjoy a MC who makes mistakes and has to deal with the consequences of that mistake. What I don't enjoy is when a MC only makes a mistake in order to progress the plot and then has to be saved by some intervening force. This series has gotten progressively worse by having the MC make a stupid (and avoidable) decision that requires him to complete an impossible task. There is no way the MC can accomplish the task, but then he gets incredibly lucky at the right time and clutches victory. It's boring and it irritates me to see a MC not learn from previous poor decision making.

I will give the next book a read and I hope the MC does some self reflecting on his poor choices.

Outstanding

I read a response to a reader from the author about how if he was looking for a fast paced overpowered protagonist, this was not the book series to read. (Paraphrasing and it might not have been in response to anyone just a comment the author made... but I digress). That gave me pause as I wondered if that meant the book would be a slow affair that was hard to stick with, God bless my ADD.
This series had been anything but that. I have thoroughly enjoyed the progression of Gunnar and his new guild/family. Plus my years of playing WoW definitely come into play with the dying and respawning. But with the NPC mortality and his need to protect them I really am invested in all of it, all the characters in the story. Anyways long story long, kudos to you Edward Brody, you have written an amazing story and I thank you for helping me get out of self during this quarantine.

A great balance between litrpg and fantasy

I really enjoy the series, and can't wait to see what happens next. One thing I like is how the author makes the npcs and characters important and I introduces the possibility for real loss. That's the only thing I think that is lacking, the main character hasn't really had any real loss yet, of course I don't want any characters to die but at the same time it feels like that needs to happen for the world to continue to have that real feeling that the author seems to be going for.

Not going to read book 7 for now

I gave this a shot after feeling like no progress was made in book 5 and this was pretty much the same. Nothing. Dude gets a couple of levels. Level 28 by the end of book 6. Gets maybe 1 spell and a mask. But loses so much more. It’s just a yawn fest of everything possible that could go wrong. He’s back to using level 1 gear and learning to be a mage at level 25 I just don’t understand what the point is. Go find a different series where the author isn’t trying to find his way.

Great Read

I'm looking forward to where this is going. I'm also very glad that this series hasn't taken a turn for the dark side. The difficulties are real, but the fun is still there. So many litrpg characters end up in horrid situations where evil things just happen to them and stress me out to the point it's just not enjoyable anymore. I really enjoyed this series and look forward to more.

I’m disappointed I have to wait now...

So, I went through the last 3 books extremely fast and I’m bummed out now that I have to wait for more books in the series. Glad I’ll get at least 3 more from this!

I could have actually killed Gunnar in this book, though. I went to bed livid at him in certain parts.

Great read and interesting to see how all the pieces are starting to fit together. <3

Still like the story, but author keeps using words they aren’t familiar with!

Looking forward to seeing where the story goes, but for the love of god, someone explain what “smirk” means, because the author loves using it, and only used it correctly once in this book. Same for “cooing”. For example, it’s really distracting when the someone gets terrible news and they start “smirking” like a teenage edgelord who just owned someone.

Pros

+ Chaotic cliffhanger ending
+ Dragons crest
+ Great ending

Cons

- To much focus on magic training
- Overwhelming

I felt that this book started off really slow with Gunner training his magic. There was a huge exposition dump at the beginning. This book felt a little bit all over the place and had a lot going on it felt overwhelming between the magic training, kidnapping, and heading to dragons crest. I think the strongest aspect of this book was the cliffhanger ending. Despite the plot being all over the place it did tie up nicely even with a cliffhanger. The chaos of the scourge invasion along with the dark hand getting an ancient weapon reminded me of the chaotic ending in the arena and I loved it. I love it when books end with the heroes unprepared for an unexpected crisis.

Wondering

I like the series, however...I can't tell if the main character is an fool, a person with limited EQ, or just a manchild. He always seems on the verge of making an intelligent decision but backs off. He seems to grasp the situation but allows less mature friends talk him out of it. It's as if he simultaneously has all the confidence while lacking all conviction. I'll keep reading, hoping he grows up but I don't see it from here.

Very fun with a couple bothersome details

The story is really good. The descriptions of places for the most part are great.

What bothers me is that this world is 10 times the size of earth, and even though we're only in Gunnar's starting area he can get anywhere in just a couple hours of riding a horse. I know Sora can travel fast but it seems they're never more than a couple hours from anywhere else

Decent twist at the end

overall the book was good. Storyline was a little less fast paced as before but the last quarter held a few surprises. The door leading unfrozen tundra, or invasion and the largest of all. The Dragon asking to be freed. Funny how that was glossed over. Maybe Gunner will have a Dragon of his own.

Enjoyed.

Not gonna lie, there was a good 2 weeks between starting this, pausing for other stories, and coming back.

I left at the exact time to make the pick up worth while.

If you've made it this far in the series, I doubt a review will sway your mind.

I'm excited for the next.

More awesomeness

I love reading this series. I lose myself completely and share in the feelings of happiness and sadness of the characters created by the author Edward Brody.
I have the next book sitting idly on my kindle waiting for me to venture forth with Gunnar and Co to see what happens next..... and I cannot wait any longer!

Overall great

Felt like I was in a game and could not put it down. Am impatient to see how Gunnar goes in his levelling. Only minor gripe is with some poor grammar choices but not enough to knock a star off

Unity starts to show some, working together for a common cause. Of course, that doesn't work and it falls back on Gunnar, but, that's okay - baby steps.

There's a fair amount I don't always remember in these series. It feels like this is getting far enough into the series that a "Previously on Eden's Gate" would be useful. I'm sure I've forgotten major plot points.

Hm

For a litRPG, it’s pretty solidly written! Not too Grindy or inundated with stats sheets, only occasional grammar issues. Good enough for me to read six in the series in 24 hours, and to look forward to the next one.

Writing continues to improve

The first book in the series was OK, but enough to continue reading, and I am super glad that I did. The characters all grow as does the writer. It is one of the more nuanced lit RPG books out there. Highly recommended for fans of the genre.

Amazing. Agin a job well done by Mr. Brody. A lot of action. Nail biting. Loved the dragon. I hope we find out more in the next book about it wanting to be released by a reborn.

Kickass!!

Damn, this book was pretty exciting. It had alot of action, and some cool puzzles. Some sad parts, and definitely buying nails as things got crazy. Hehe, Gunner is tenacious, he won't give up no matter what.

A thriller from start to finish

In the 6th book, we get to witness the lengths that Gunnar is willing to go for a chance to save a friend, we also witness the depravity and scope that Eden’s gate has evolved without influence from the Reborn

Interesting bit so stupid

Omg wow this feels kinda like a combination soap opera and a bad 80's sit com. The plot is so slow and sometimes just doesn't make sense. I think if I didn't have my Amazon Kindle subscription I would have never gotten past book 2.
