Falling in love with her sister's suitor had never been part of her plan.
After losing her parents, Elizabeth Watts and her two sisters are taken under the care of their great-aunt, who has promised them her estate upon her death. From a young age, however, Elizabeth has learned not to expect to keep things that can be taken away. An unforeseen change in the will reveals that Elizabeth and her sisters may have the estate, but only if the eldest weds Dr. Luke Pembroke, their great-aunt’s beloved physician, who needs the estate just as desperately as they do.
Knowing her sister to be in love with another, Elizabeth is appalled when she begins courting Dr. Pembroke, intent to sacrifice her own happiness. Nothing if not determined, Elizabeth makes plans to sabotage the courtship. With her schemes underway, she quickly learns that her sister’s suitor is nothing if not clever—nothing except, perhaps, handsome, kind, and infuriatingly charming. When the feelings between them become impossible to ignore, Elizabeth discovers that love has a scheme all its own, and it might just be the most determined of all.
An Unwelcome Suitor is part of the ENTANGLED INHERITANCE series, a set of stand-alone regency romance novels. This was a fun Regency story with Elizabeth's scheming and the misadventures that result. She has a good sense of humor when things go wrong for the most part, although she is determined to see her older sister marry for love and just doesn't give up. She has some character growth as her eyes are opened to the real circumstances of people she has judged prematurely, and I liked her more as the book went on and she developed some depth and humility. Luke is patient with Elizabeth's antics but doesn't let her get away with them and finds them entertaining as well as frustrating. They start out as enemies, then turn to frenemies, and their relationship continues along the natural path to friends and more. I just had to keep reading to see how the complex situation of inheriting the estate would turn out!
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
It’s always a wonderful day when Ashtyn Newbold has a new release. The premise for An Unwelcome Suitor sounded delightful, but I must admit it exceeded my expectations. I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful story and wanted to both savor the journey and quickly read it in order to see how everything turned out. In the end, I inhaled it in a single sitting and enjoyed every moment.
Eliza’s wonderful first-person narration and the situation she and her sisters find themselves in captured me from the beginning. Juliana’s sacrificing marrying the man she loved in order to protect her sisters and Eliza’s determination to thwart the arrangement made for such an interesting setup for what turned out to be such a lovely and humorous romance.
From the moment Eliza met her aunt’s beloved physician, Luke Pembroke, their chemistry leapt off the page. Eliza’s schemes to sabotage his relationship with her sister created some delightful banter and many fun situations, especially when Eliza’s plans inevitably backfired. I loved the way Luke responded to her antics; he was so charming, patient, and such a good man, definitely one to add to my ever-growing list of book boyfriends. He complemented Eliza so well. She was also a fantastic character; I loved her loyalty, spunk, and impulsiveness. Her banter and interactions with Luke were both delightful and humorous, while also being thoroughly romantic. Their romance developed at the perfect pace, all while Eliza experienced some fantastic growth. I especially loved the book’s message about choosing to be happy regardless of our circumstances. So beautiful.
Overall, An Unwelcome Suitor was such a sweet and beautiful love story—well written, thoroughly entertaining, and utterly delightful. Definitely one of my favorites from Ashtyn Newbold.
I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review, but I loved it enough to ask for the paperback for my birthday. Hooray!
I have loved this series. This one was hard for me, I didn't like the idea of the H falling in love with her sister's intended. I knew it is a story line I have not liked many times before. So this is a good book and it was cute and had good points but over all it was not my cup of tea.
Plot- the premise was good, but the plot was dull. When I had only 14 pages left and the climax was underway, I briefly considered not finishing it. The conclusion was happy for everyone, albeit a little overly convenient.
Characters- the FMC came across as very immature, esp when she decided to sabotage the MMC. She kept lying, which is also a turn-off to me. The way her mind worked, the conclusions she came to, the way she behaved- all of this was just off for me. I never connected to her. The other characters were ok.
Romance- the main romance wasn’t as believable or convincing as I would have liked. The pacing also felt a bit off. The chemistry was mediocre/low.
Content- Language- no swearing Spice- clean. Some sweet kisses. Cover- I don’t really like it Format- KU
Ashtyn Newbold did it again. She had me so invested in the story right from the first chapter. The characters were loveable, charming, and funny! I laughed out loud a couple of times during this book and it left me smiling when I finished it.
When their Aunt Augusta dies, Eliza and her two sisters are surprised by the recent ammendment to their great Aunt's will. Instead of inheriting Brookhaven as had been planned, the sisters will only inherit it if the oldest, Juliana marries their aunt's physician Luke Pembroke. This wouldn't be such a big deal if she weren't already in love with another man.
Eliza takes it upon herself to try to keep Luke from courting her sister. When that doesn't work she tries to make him seem less desirable. As Luke accepts each of her schemes with good humor, Eliza realizes that he has more redeeming qualities than she initially thought. Eliza's schemes were hilarious, especially because they all seemed to backfire on her. I loved the camaraderie that developed between Eliza and Luke, and the chemistry that built between them as well.
I was a little frustrated with Eliza in the first half of the book as her schemes were pretty juvenille, but she was trying to help her sister, and I understood that. I liked Eliza better when she and Luke were no longer at odds.
I have only read one other book in the Entangled Inheritance series. Each can be read independently. The only overlap I noticed was that the families had used the same solicitor for the wills. This story was funny and sweet. I laughed out loud, and shook my head often.
Content: clean (gossip about ruined reputations, a few kisses)
I loved this. The plot really sucked me in. I was always itching to pick up this book when I had the chance.
I love that Elizabeth grew into a better person throughout the book. She made mistakes but she grew as the story progressed. I enjoyed following her throughout this story. I really liked Charity Oakley. I am excited for Charity's book which comes out soon!
On the other hand, I loved Luke. When he came out of his shell and was more teasing (and adorable....XD), he was just great hehe. Eliza and Luke were cute and perfect. Literally, every scene when they were together got me excited. Two scenes in particular that I liked (though I loved so many) were at the pond and when Eliza played blind man's bluff the first time.
Also, that plot twist at the end completely caught me by surprise! And the ending wrapped up pretty nicely. Well, It was such a good book. My first of Ashtyn Newbold's, and most definitely not my last! :)
This was a really cute Regency romance that drew me in the longer I read. Although I started out feeling a little impatient with both the heroine and the hero for different reasons, I got to like them and thought their story arc was credible. Fun read!
I really REALLY enjoyed this story. It's my 2nd Newbold story after The Ace of Hearts. I found the characters really well drawn and the dilemma was a truly difficult one. What would you do if by marrying someone you could save your family and theirs? But what if you didn't love that person? The difficulties were genuine and not contrived as far as how the characters reacted, everyone fully thought out the consequences of their actions before following through on them and even the villain wasn't really a villain. Just an annoying prick of a cousin. I found myself also wondering what I would do in that situation. The author really showed that by simply writing about life and people provides enough drama and angst without having to throw in murderers, crazy villains and kidnappings, etc. I am definitely going to check out more of her works.
Loved the two main characters. They had great banter and I really didn’t know how they would win out in the end. Anyone who likes a good clean regency... this is your book!
I’ve truly enjoyed this entire series. Although they could all be read as standalone novels I’ve really enjoyed reading them in the order that they were released. Each one has featured Mr. Tuttle-Kirk & the outrageous wills/inheritances he has had to organise. This one in particular had me wondering just how things we’re going to work out. I didn’t see the twist at the end coming. This book, as well as the entire series, has been a clean & wholesome read with fun & engaging characters that you can easily love - & despise as the case of the villains may be. I loved the character development of this story. Luke especially is one of my favourite hero’s yet. I love his interactions with all of the sisters. I can definitely recommend this book, the series & the authors!
I was in a reading funk when this little gem came along. I haven’t loved the last few books I’ve read and I thought it might be because I have been so busy and take longer to read them. But then this book happened and I am so thankful to have really enjoyed reading this book.
There is something I love about characters having immediate dislike for one another. This one came with some hilarious pranks that didn’t quite turn out they way they were intended.
Dr. Pembrooke was a very likable character once you got to know him. I loved how awkward he could be at times. Elizabeth was definitely unrealistic and immature sometimes but that is what made the story interesting.
Clean romance. Thank you to the author for an arc of this book for my honest review.
Firstly, I have to say that I did not want to hate this book. But ultimately, the first half drove me nuts because I hate the ‘inferior woman who cannot best the superior man’ trope, even if it was meant in jest and even if it - in his condescension - made the hero love the heroine.
Then, as if that wasn’t enough, a attempt was made to garner sympathy from me for the hero with his poor, orphaned family. I did not, because if there is one thing more annoying than a perfect heroine, it is a perfect hero. Bleugh.
Ultimately, I made it to the end, but it was just dissatisfying to my imperfect heart that everything should have worked out so neatly.
I admit I kept trying to figure out how there would be a happily ever after for this story and could not figure out how it was going to work. This was a fun story. Eliza is so determined, Juliana so selfless and Luke trying his best to be the same. It was a little crazy at times, but a lot of fun. I would have loved a peak inside Luke's mind just a little to see what and when things happened for him.
This story, simpIy, is beautiful. Elizabeth is funny, loyal, full of mischief, and an easy heroine to root for. I'm crossing all my fingers that Ashtyn chooses to write books for Martha and Luke's sisters, even though this is a part of a series with 3 other authors.
Delightfully fun! Again, I have to say that I just adore this series. These are the perfect type of stories to read when you need an escape from reality. This was one of my favorites in the series. Elizabeth’s antics were absolutely hilarious. I love it when a book can make me giggle like a silly school girl or put a big grin on my face. Those are always the best!
Elizabeth was really immature and annoying at the beginning, I have to admit. I almost decided to stop reading it because she was annoying me, but I’m glad I didn’t. She grew and matured and figured things out along the way, mostly after being forced to learn them through her hasty actions. Thankfully, the second half of the book redeemed the beginning, so I gave the book 4 stars.
I liked it. The first few chapters were slow, and I didn’t like how the ending was wrapped up, but the development of their relationship was really fun and the ending was just off not terrible.
Elizabeth and her sister live with their great aunt after their parent’s death. She has been a good, but quirky guardian for them. The great aunt loves the new physician in town. When Elizabeth meets him she finds him cold and decides she doesn’t like him. Her older sister, Juliana, has fallen in love with the farmer down the road, Gilbert. Their great aunt has disinherited her great nephew in favor of the girls, but before she dies she makes a stipulation that if Juliana doesn’t marry Luke Pembroke before the end of the summer then the nephew gets the estate and living. Problem is Elizabeth convinced Juliana not not tell their aunt before her death about Gilbert. So Elizabeth tries to make things right by sabotaging the courtship. Luke has decided they will court before the marriage so Juliana can be sure. Elizabeth gets caught in every single one of her schemes from a frog in the hat to a fake love letter from Luke. Luke outsmarts Elizabeth at every step so he takes her attempts on stride. Elizabeth learns the girl who is considered the town floozy is really just a girl who gets sick. She would leave balls due to illness and someone her family and the ton thought she was slipping away to make out with lots of boys. (This part doesn’t make any sense). Elizabeth befriends her after learning from Luke the town was wrong about her. Olivia tells her the Luke had lost both his parents too and he needs to living to support his four sisters. Elizabeth softens and begins to help him court Juliana but in those efforts to teach him romance she falls in love with him. One day she goes and meets his sister’s and the older sister tells her to not ruin it for them as Luke is clearly distracted by Elizabeth. Elizabeth realizes she does love him and begins to avoid him she is hurt culminating her trying to avoid him in a rain storm and him running after her. They kiss. She confesses to Luke that Juliana was almost engaged to Gilbert which opened the door for him to act of the feelings that had been growing for Elizabeth. She decides to flee to London for a governess position which was already filled so she swings by the solicitor’s office to make sure there are no other options from the will. In rereading she realizes that the great aunt left the estate to the nephew not the great nephew. Turns out they misunderstood this whole time and the rake wasn’t the one set to inherit but the Uncle that made so much money in Spain and loved it that he wasn’t interested in the estate and left to the girls discretion whether they could run the estate. So Elizabeth got her Luke and Juliana got her Gilbert. Luke’s 4 sister moved in along with Gilbert’s mother and sister. So 2 men and 9 women now live at that estate. I guess Juliana would be the head of household. Those are some brave men. I would have ended it so it wasn’t so uncertain. Technically these two grown men are relying on the charting of the Uncle in Spain. That seems weird. Also, rich men don’t get rich by just giving up fortunes, so that seemed super generous to me borderline unbelievable. Overall it was a cute relationship build and I’m glad Juliana and Gilbert and Elizabeth and Luke ended up together.

I really enjoyed reading Eliza’s and Luke’s story. Eliza was a really fun and interesting heroine. She wasn’t perfect. She was selfish but also selfless. She made wrong choices, and she made right ones. It was really enlightening to read about a character that I both rooted for and cringed for. She was a realistic person who struggled with differentiating her own priorities and the priorities of others. I really enjoyed her growth throughout the story. Luke was a great foil to Eliza too. He was so sweet, and I loved how Eliza was able to pierce through his mask. The romance was great, and the plot moved along nicely. I enjoyed the tension throughout!
Leave it to a old lady to fall for her doctor and complicate everyone’s life. With less than two weeks left to live, the old gal (rich as Midas) changes her will. In order for her grandnieces to inherit, the eldest must marry the young doctor. The doctor is young, intelligent, handsome and single. The eldest niece is already in love but the gentleman is not as wealthy as her social status would demand. The doctor is also of a poorer class of people but rich aunt approves. How to untangle this mess. Plus keep undesirable great nephew from undoing everything and taking over the entire inheritance!
Elizabeth Watts and her two sisters inherit their great-aunt's estate on the condition that the oldest girl marry Dr. Luke Pembroke. Unfortunately, the oldest is in love with someone else though both she and Luke need the estate to care for their respective families so they decide to go through with the marriage. Elizabeth is determined that her sister not make this sacrifice and tries everything to break up the couple, falling in love with Luke herself. I found the story a bit contrived and I didn't like Elizabeth very much. She seems very juvenile and there didn't seem much chemistry between her and Luke. It's an okay story and I'm sure others will enjoy it. It just wasn't for me.
I had a very hard time getting into this one and almost didn’t finish it. The story is told by Eliza, the main character and I just did not like her. She is immature, insensitive, conniving, and meddling. An unexpected clause in her great aunts will requires that the eldest sister Julianna marry Dr. Luke but she is in love with another. If she doesn’t marry him the estate goes to another relative. Eliza plots against the doctor to prevent the marriage and ends up falling in love herself. There are some really funny, sweet and touching parts of the book which is why I gave it a 3. I just found Eliza to be a challenge.
This book was such convoluted mess, that only got worse for the characters as it went along. I could not figure out how everybody was going to end up happy. I knew, of course, what needed to happen, but I honestly could not figure out how everything could be solved to the satisfaction of the characters and to the satisfaction of the reader. In the end, it was done so adeptly, and so suddenly, and so cleverly, that it stunned me. And I am not usually stunned by endings. Very well-written and it kept me on pins and needles throughout, culminating in that satisfying ending I was hoping for!
Ashtyn Newbold has written a delightful series of books based on oddly written wills left by very clever forebears. I thoroughly enjoyed the first three, but I believe this has been the best in the series. From the first chapter, I couldn't put it down (as the dishes in my sink and unmade bed will attest!). This is a story of familial loyalty and sacrifice, the mistakes of making assumptions based on first impressions and gossip, and the greed of distant relatives. (Yes, there is a villain!) The vagaries of romantic love, the unexpected attractions and consideration of others are gently woven in this very clean and suspenseful tale.
Elizabeth's impulsive personality reminds me of Anne of Green Gables. Her impulsivity get her into some laughable situations. She always means well, which makes her so likeable.
The first chapter confused me, how in the world had the sisters never met the physician or Gilbert? Didn't they notice the physician as he made house calls for the ailing aunt in their own home? Wasn't their home in a small village where people know and greet each other? Puzzling indeed.
Speaking about judging a book by its cover: this cover doesn't do anything for me. And it also doesn't match the vibe of the book.
Cute easy read. Clean. First person, Elizabeth only
Another delightful and well written story in the Entangled Inheritance series. The main characters in this story, Julianne, Elizabeth and to a lesser degree Martha Watts are orphans living with their great aunt, she is dearly loved by the girls but she is a strict and at times manipulative woman, on her death her will stipulates that Julianna must marry her Doctor, Luke Pembroke, in order that the girls inherit their home. This act results in a series of events instigated by Elizabeth to stop the marriage as Julianna is in love with someone else, unfortunately Elizabeth is not so adept at sabotage, and the results are quite amusing, as well as at times quite heart wrenching as feelings, between the couple's become entangled. Mr Tuttle-Kirk appears again as the harrassed attorney who desperately attempts to sort the complicated will. The baddie in the story I was pleased to see got his comeuppance. The secondary characters being Dr Pembroke's four sisters were endearing with the exception of Betsey the eldest who was very spiteful towards Elizabeth initially. All in all I would thoroughly recommend this book as a very enjoyable read.
Eliza is very emotional and impulsive. The whole thing is told in the first person which made it feel extreme. Orphaned sisters live with their great aunt on an estate. She dies and leaves a ridiculous will requiring the oldest sister to marry her doctor. If she doesn't the estate goes to another relative and they are homeless. The aunt supposedly loved them. The book starts with secret keeping and continues. The great aunt didn't know Julia had fallen in love. No one told her. First Eliza abuses the doctor and then tries manipulation. Of course they fall in love.
3 1/2 stars. This was another cute story in the Entangled Inheritance series. Luke and Elizabeth were a great pair to root for in spite of the crazy legalities of this inheritance story. Gilbert and Juliana were also a sweet couple, but not quite as intriguing or interesting. Although I did indeed enjoy this story, there was something a little lacking about it (from my perspective) compared to the rest of the series. I can’t quite pinpoint it, but they were times it seemed to drag a bit or get lost in the narration. Ultimately, however, I highly recommend this series.
