The perfect next listen for fans of Megan Miranda and Jessica Knoll, In Her Skin is a gripping debut thriller told from the perspectives of three unforgettable women. Meggie Meyer, an anxiety-ridden debut author, can’t bear to face her upcoming book tour, but she can’t give up on her writing career just as it’s about to really begin. She comes up with a plan that’s so crazy, it just might work: She hires an actress to impersonate her for the two-week stint. Sloan Buchanan, the spunky aspiring actress, jumps at the opportunity to use her intensive acting method to sink into this unusual role, and the line between her and her character quickly begins to blur. And Rachel Drake, the no-nonsense detective, is left to put the pieces together when Sloan vanishes after the tour’s end.
In rotating chapters from these three unique voices, we unravel the complicated web of secrets that Sloan left in her wake, working towards the shocking truth behind her disappearance.
Alex Kiester is the co-author of the New York Times Bestsellers, THE MISSING HALF and ALL GOOD PEOPLE HERE. She is also the author of THE TRUTH ABOUT BEN AND JUNE, a "witty and wise page-turner" that explores a modern-day marriage, and the "pulse-pounding" psychological thriller, IN HER SKIN.
From the beginning, Alex felt things very deeply and she learned early that the best thing to do with all that emotion was to turn it into fiction. Some of Alex’s earliest memories, in fact, are of wandering her neighborhood barefoot while narrating fictionalized versions of her life in her head. All her old diaries are full - not with writing of her childhood - but made-up stories.
While she always dreamed of becoming a novelist, Alex wasn't exactly sure how to get there. She graduated from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN with a degree in creative writing along with a few hundred dollars cash from bartending and promptly moved back into her childhood room in her hometown of Austin, TX. Her first job was as a technical writer for a distressed properties institute, which to this day, Alex still has no idea what that means. She eventually got a copy editing job at the journal for the Texas House of Representatives, which was exciting for the first few months and then wasn't.
From there, she became a book editor at a boutique romance publishing house, which, yes, is a euphemism for erotica (sorry, Dad). As Alex worked on book after book that she had not authored, she increasingly felt that she could work on one that she had. During her lunch breaks, she began writing her own romance novel, which, no, is not a euphemism for erotica (you’re welcome, Dad). While it was pretty bad, by writing a novel, she’d proven to herself that she could. And now she had the bug.
Over the next few years, she worked a slew of jobs to bankroll her novel-writing habit, from Zumba instructor to casting assistant and eventually, writing coach. And then, after years of writing and multiple manuscripts on the shelf, she finally got her first book published. Her debut, IN HER SKIN, came out as an Audible Original in 2019. Her next novel, THE TRUTH ABOUT BEN AND JUNE, came out in June 2022. She also co-wrote the #1 New York Times bestseller, All Good People Here, which came out in July 2022.
Alex lives with her husband in Austin, TX. When she’s not writing, she can be found reading in the bath, talking on the phone with her mom, taking long walks, watching too much TV, or watching squirrels from her writing desk. She continues to feel things very deeply and she’ll continue to write these feelings down for a very long time to come.
In Her Skin by Alex Kiester, performed by Cassandra Campbell, Brittany Pressley, and Bahni Turpin, was an amazing audiobook from Audible Originals!
What it's about: Meggie Meyer is a debut author with extreme anxiety. Due to her anxiety she is unwilling to go on the tour for her new book, so she decides to hire someone to do it. Meggie ends up hiring ambitious, aspiring actress Sloan Buchanan to pretend to be her on tour. But Sloan might be playing Meggie a little too well, and after she disappears when the tour is over, detective Rachel Drake is left trying to figure out just where she went.
In Her Skin really was a fantastic audiobook. I haven't listened to all that many books yet, but I was definitely impressed with how the three different narrators were able to bring this story to life. I was also really into Kiester's writing style and would love to know why she decided to go straight up audiobook for this novel. She and the narrators are clearly all incredibly talented, and I think this is going to be a book everyone can love.
The plot of In Her Skin was also on point, and I had no idea where it was going to go. The ending completely surprised me along with plenty of other things that happen. This is definitely a twisty mystery, and I really loved the detective Rachel Drake, as well as her partner on the case. Meggie and Sloan were more of a toss-up for me, but I had a lot of empathy for Meggie most of the time. There is also a trigger for rape in this book which I think is important to point out since it is an audiobook. It did end up being essential to the story, and it broke my heart.
Song/s the book brought to mind: 4 Minutes by Madonna (feat. Justin Timberlake & Timbaland)
Final Thought: There is so much to love about In Her Skin and I didn't want to stop listening to it, especially when I was down to the last 3 hours. It's over 10 hours long, but the time felt like it passed by extremely quickly, and there were plenty of short chapters to keep me going. I also enjoyed the 3 different viewpoints and the different voices by the narrators. All in all, if you like a great twisty mystery with an ending you won't see coming, you need to check out In Her Skin! I would gladly listen to (or read) more by this author and all 3 narrators.
Thank you to Audible for providing me with an advanced review copy of this audiobook! All opinions and thoughts are my own.
I've been bingeing this story for the last 24 hours. The characters are so well developed that I could feel Meggie’s anxiety and Sloan’s love of acting, but also her frustration about her career. The different points of view made everyone's individual motivation crystal clear and then detailed how each person's motivation affected everyone in their wake. The story is fresh and full of surprises. This is a smart thriller with a poignant ending that really got to me.
I’m on a streak, a terrible streak of choosing bad audible books. After listening a few hours of slooooooowness, I skipped to the last hours or so for the ridiculous finish.
I wasn't sure what I was going to think of this one as it's a new to me author and sometimes I am hit or miss with thrillers. I ended up really enjoying this one though so I am glad I got a chance to listen too it.
It's told in the POV of three different women and we know that Sloane is missing but we are not sure when it happened. We get the Rachael the detective's pov which is why we know something has happened. Then we have the povs of Meggie a new author who has bad anxiety and so she hires an actress Sloane to portray her at book tours and any public speaking engagements. Sloane thinks it will be a pretty easy gig and she likes Meggie and really gets into her role.
Through these two POV's we start to find out what happens piece by piece and from that I pretty much had it figured out though there were a few surprises.
I really liked all three POV's and they are portrayed by three different narrators but I must admit that for performance I would give it about a 3.5 because I couldn't tell the difference between narrators. I think they picked females with to similiar of voices and I didn't' realize there was three narrators till later on when I looked up the narrator! That being said I didn't mind the narration and thought it was a decent performance.
If you enjoy thrillers I think you should check this one out and I am curious to see what else comes from this author
This book was everything! I love thrillers and this did NOT disappoint. The characters were rich and enthralling. The story was well fleshed out and original. It kept me guessing from the beginning right up until the end. I honestly had no idea what was coming or how we were going to get there. And I did not figure out the ending or any of the twists! There were audible (no pun intended) gasps from me as pieces of the story were revealed. The characters and the story made me feel things! No one makes me feel my own feelings! Dang you, Alex!!
This is my first audio book ever. I can't get in to audio books and I admit it makes me feel like I'm cheating when I attempt to listen to an audio book. I'm a reader, I should be physically reading the book! But, I have been following/friends of Alex Kiester on Instagram for many years now, eagerly anticipating her debut novel, following the process and cheering her on from afar as best I could and so when she announced it was picked up as an audible original I knew this would be my first audio book ever and I WOULD achieve my goal of actually listening to the entire thing...and I DID it! And it was AMAZING!
Alex, what a debut novel! It exceeded expectations and I cannot WAIT for book number two! And I will be cheering that process on just as heartily as I did the first one! Bravo! I'm so happy. And you know if the book comes out in physical form I'll be the first in line to buy it and add it to my shelves!
An amazing 5-star debut by a very talented author, read by fabulous narrators.
I listened to this book in one day and it did not disappoint. I especially loved the book because it was not the "same old, same old". This is the first story that I have listened to about a fearful author who hires an actress to assume her own role at book tours -- and the dire consequences that follow. I also enjoyed the book because I did not guess the ending.
The plot was well developed and all three of the main characters were very compelling.
I highly recommend this book and will be looking forward to listening to more titles from this author in the future.
This book is riveting! I could not stop listening. It's incredibly well written and a wonderful story that gets you hooked, fast. I felt a connection with all 3 main characters. The characters are very dynamic, they really come to life and draw you in. Each one tells their part of the story in such a way that you'll never guess how it ends. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to reread it!
At points I could really relate to Maggie. I liked the narration from three different points of view. I also liked that the novel didn’t feel rushed. I wish there was a bit more there about Sloane’s reasons for being the way she was. In general, a very decent thriller which I struggled to put down.
I love mysteries, especially those that play with the psychological aspect and of unreliable times or narration. What this story does so well is show a person's subtle descent into their fears and instability after stopping taking their medication. It's subtle, only touched on in a few scattered sentences, but we get to see Meggie go from a phobic person who is trying to get better, and is doing so by her connection with another caring human to a person who can't trust the world around them and whose paranoia becomes louder than her rational thoughts.
This could have been done with a sledgehammer, repeatedly driving home that Meggie ran our of her meds and that she's spending her time alone going crazy; but instead is done here with a pen knife, letting you see Meggie's ever increasing irrationality from both her point of view and from Sloan's, leaving you wondering if she's really capable of doing what we all think she wouldn't.
Binged this in a couple of days, unwilling to stop listening to such a well told story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The story is told from three points of view; a meek author, the actress she hires to “play” her on a book tour and the police detective who investigates when the actress goes missing. The first half of this book dragged a bit. It may just be that I don’t enjoy police procedurals. The story got more interesting at about the halfway point and I was curious to see how it would end.
All three characters are well developed and the reader is given a clear sense of what motivates each of them.
The ending was quite a twist and left me feeling a bit let down. Everything was wrapped up nicely, but I found it a bit unbelievable. I can’t say more than that without spoilers.
There were many phone calls during the the book and the sound was changed during the calls to give the sense that it was a phone call. I found this distracting and unnecessary.
All three audiobook narrators did an excellent job. Cassandra Campbell especially did a superlative job on the meek Meggy.
So thankful that this download coincided with a road trip for work. Couldn't be more thankful to have uninterrupted alone time to listen. I kept guessing what I thought would happen next....I was wrong every. single. time. Even sat in the car multiple times refusing to get out so I could hear what happened next.
If you're a follower of Reese's Book Club, you will LOVE this book! Three strong and unique female characters written beautifully by a woman....it's exactly what that book club is looking for! I would be shocked if it's not an upcoming selection in the book club soon.
Fantastic, fast-paced listen! Highly recommend this book. The story is compelling and multi faceted. The characters are richly detailed. The writing is crisp and fast paced. And if that wasn’t enough...all three performances are the icing on the cake. It’s a captivating thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end. I can’t wait for Alex Kiester’s next book.
I loved this book! Interesting plot twists, strong characters, and amazing narrators. While listening, I had so many thoughts in my head about what could have happened and they were changing all the time, so the book kept me intrigued and feeling excited for all 10 hours. With this book, I was happy to be stuck in traffic.
I enjoyed the story and the narration. However, Meggy (WTH kind of name is that for an adult) irritated me to no end. Talk about drama! The twists and turns were pretty good and the ultimate ending was bit expected. I really wanted more of Sloane and her brand of crazy. All in all it was a decent listen.
I really enjoyed this debut novel by Alex Kiester. It was a very well written mystery that held my interest throughout the whole novel which as fellow readers you know that is not always the case.
It took Meggie five years to write her novel and now that the book tour is about to start she just can't face getting up in front of tons of strangers and reading experts of her book to them. You see, Meggie has crippling anxiety and just about anything will set her anxiety off. What should she do? Then she comes up with an idea, she will hire an actress to play her during the tour! Her cover picture for her book is an illustration so she just needs to find someone that looks enough like her.
Sloane is an actress that just isn't doing as well in her career as she was hoping she would be by now so when she sees a casting call that may be perfect for her she decides to give it a try. When she gets the job it is definitely different than what she expected. She isn't sure it is what she wants to do but when she lost the part she really wanted to her rival she decides to throw herself into the role of Meggie. She will be the best....no, she will be BETTER a Meggie than Meggie is!
When Rachel is given the case of missing girl Sloane she doesn't want the case and she certainly doesn't want the new partner her boss insists on because she has a lot going on in her private life.
(spoiler)
I will say that I really wanted to feel bad for the victim but I just didn't like her. I don't think she deserved what she got in any way but I liked that Alex Kiester did a great job showing that not all victims are likable and that sometimes we remember them as much nicer and better than they were in life.
Loved it....a mix between single white female and something 🤷🏾♀️. Crazy ish but good. Meggie is a writer whose mother died and is still grieving and her book isn't selling like it should because she doesn't do social media nor book tours. In comes crazy or in this book Sloane. A actress who really gets in to character, I mean too deep I may add. She hates her life and loves to be someone else. Meggie is an opportunity of a lifetime, Sloane cut her hair and morphed into Meggie, even changed her signature and told people she rather go by "Meg", instead of Meggie. She slept with her editor, meanwhile Sloane's family and friends thinks she is missing, as though something bad happened to her. Chile....the twist and turns this book has, is very delightful. I loved it from the beginning to end. I won't spoil all the drama, but honey read this book!!!!! #highlyrecommended #book15of2021 #bookworm #whatsnext
I found this book totally captivating. It's a brilliant set-up. Meggie Meyer has published her first novel, now she is expected to go on a book tour, but she's terrified. Her intense anxiety is trapping her and stopping her success. She decides to hire Sloan Buchanan to impersonate her on the tour. What could possibly go wrong? So, so much. This is Alex Kiester's first published novel, and it was picked up by Audible. It's an excellent audio book because of the three distinct voices, and they use three different actors to portray them, and the fast pace. It's also heavy on dialogue, which, again, works best for audio. I loved it and have recommended it to many friends and fans of suspense and mystery. It has just the right amount of details, not too graphic, and a very tangled web of lies!
I loved listening to this Audible! The three characters were narrated by different people which made it really easy to keep everyone straight. Told in alternating chapters with Sloan the aspiring actress, Meggie the reclusive author and Rachel the detective assigned to Sloan's case. The Sloan and Meggie chapters are told in the "past" while Rachel's are more "real| time and they slowly come together in current time as you find out what really happened to Sloan. Kiester wrote a great, slow burn book with twists and turns I wasn't sure what could have happened or who could have been responsible because there were enough options to keep you guessing until the shocking end!
This was an easy to listen to suspense, with all 3 narrators doing an awesome job with their roles. I thought that the author did a nice job developing all 3 so that the reader got to know who they were and understand why they made the choices that they did.
I was initially confused by the name Meggy and wasn't sure if I was hearing it correctly. (A cross between Peggy and Maggie?) Also, there was no physical resemblance between Meggy and Sloan until Sloan gives Meggy a haircut - yeah, no, that just didn't work for me.
I don’t typically listen to audiobooks so I don’t have much to compare it to, but I enjoyed the story and it captured my attention with ease. I thought the narration was smooth and done well, the characters were well-developed, and there was enough detail to picture the scenes while not overwhelming the story. The reveals, twists and turns of the plot were well-integrated through the story and the pacing was fast and good throughout. Im This was an impressive debut for a new author.
2.5 stars. Interesting premise, but it didn't end up anyplace very interesting, and it took a way too long to get there. My favorite character was Rachel, the detective, and the sections where she and her partner were working on the case were more interesting than all the before stuff between Meggie and Sloan.
I really enjoyed this audiobook. The narration should get 5 stars. Three different voices with different points of view made the story more interesting and realistic. I thought I had the story figured out but I was wrong. I finished this book in a couple of days. I want to read/listen to more from this author.
Good not great. Final twist got me, which was a nice surprise. Characters were reasonably well written, although there was too much repetition at times. I get it...one of them is outgoing and "crazy" and the other one is introverted and "mousey". Don't rush out for it, but if you have a plane ride or something...
Audio...Audible Orig - Author who suffers from anxiety hires and actress to play her on book tour. One of them goes missing. Told from the persepective of the detectives trying to solve the case, the author and the actress. Good story - somewhat weak ending.
Pretty good character development and a fairly interesting story. My only complaint is the secondary plot … in some cases, it seemed to slow down the story. Not a bad effort, but could have been better if the author didn’t spend so much time focused on the main character’s mother.
