When Kitty looks for the perfect home, she makes an unlikely best friend—Dragon! From Epic! Originals, Kitty and Dragon is a lovable early reader series about finding true friendship when you least expect it.
Book 1 of this early reader series features three adorable stories about Kitty and Dragon—best friends, even when one of them is snoring, being messy, or having a sad day. Even though they are quite different from one another, Kitty and Dragon have learned that there’s nothing better than being together, just the way they are.
MEIKA HASHIMOTO's first baking foray was a chocolate cake. She was eight years old and, in her excitement, forgot a few key ingredients like sugar and baking powder. She also left the cake in the oven for far too long. Although it resembled a brick, her parents politely ate it and gave her very encouraging feedback. Meika's baking techniques have improved greatly since then. When she's not kneading bread dough or baking cheesecakes, she can be found editing children's books.
This is utterly adorable and honestly one of my favourite little picture books of the year! I'm totally impressed and totally enchanted by this tale. Kitty and Dragon are the sweetest little things and have a wonderful yet adorable relationship.
If you want a seriously sweet and joyful book to light up your day, this is it. It's fun, soft and simple while being a great tale for all ages. Adults and children alike will enjoy it! This shouldn't just be limited to kids.
I seriously need more of this in my life ASAP.
Five out of five stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
Kitty and Dragon is three stories in one book and this is the first volume with more planned in the future. In our first story, we meet the gorgeous Kitty as she goes wandering trying to find somewhere quiet as she gets fed up with the loud noises. The other animals she passes on her journey warn her to be careful about the silent Dragon she is nearing.
In the second story, Kitty gets a cold and Dragon gets to look after her. The third story is about Kitty and Dragon learning to live together and about being more caring towards one another as Kitty is tidy and Dragon is messy.
The book is exceptionally cute and has amazing illustrations. It is a story of friendship and what friends do for one another. The text is kept to a minimum so it would be perfect for new readers.
The book was a real joy to read and I love how each of the stories focused on one area of friendship. This would be lovely to have at home or even to be used as a class read to show the children what friendship is all about.
This was a very cute story (with super adorable illustrations) about a kitty looking for a quiet place to sleep, so she stumbles into the dragon's cave, who everyone warned her from, but the end up being the best friends ever and living together, and it really made me smile throughout the entire story!
Oh my gosh, this story was so damn cute! I wanna write a story like Meika Hashimoto's Kitty and Dragon. Illustrated by Gillian Reid, this was honestly one of the most adorable stories I've ever read. So much so that I would just die if it was made into a kid's show (anyone up for making that happen?). I would definitely make my nieces watch it just to have an excuse to do so myself.
Kitty Just Wants Some Quiet
In the beginning, Kitty and Dragon have never met. In fact, Kitty lives in a barn. But Kitty can't stand to be around all the noise. It interrupts her sleep. Thus, Kitty sets out to find a quiet place to live.
Meanwhile, as Kitty journeys through the land she meets a variety of creatures all warning her away from the silent dragon. Despite how scary everyone makes the dragon out to be, one thing sticks with Kitty. That dragon is silent.
Next thing you know Kitty has arrived at the dragon's cave. Within moments she realizes she has found an amazingly quiet place to live. And she is thrilled.
Kitty's Got the Sniffles
As if this series couldn't get any more heartwarming, after living with dragon for some time Kitty catches a cold. Dragon quickly grows sad since Kitty's cold means that she won't be around to join him in kite flying. But, instead of responding in any selfish manner, dragon instead decides to go to his library and read about how to take care of a sick Kitty.
Thus we are presented with an adorable little montage of dragon being the best caretaker ever for his new roommate. Also, I just loved that library. Ultimately, I don't think Kitty could have ever found a better friend to live with. And, even better, I don't think dragon could have met a better roommate than kitty.
Living with Mess-Makers
Oh my gosh, I laughed so much at this one.
I didn't realize that I could relate so much to a simple kid's story. But, here I am, just dying with laughter at Kitty's most recent problem with Dragon. Turns out Dragon is a giant mess-maker. He leaves his dishes out when Kitty cleans up hers. He treks mud all over the cave after Kitty had just cleaned. In general, Dragon just sucks at being neat when Kitty is the cleanest there ever is.
Now, I won't claim to be the cleanest ever like Kitty. But I definitely know what it's like to live with someone who leaves their messes all over the place and treks in all kinds of nonsense from the backyard that I will then have to clean up. Dishes and paper towels are left all over the place when they belong in the dishwasher and the trash, respectively.
So, how will Kitty deal with the messy, messy Dragon? In one of the best ways ever.
Art, Message, and Readability
The strongest piece of this series is the artwork. Hats of to Gillian Reid because she drew some of the cutest characters I have ever seen. I loved everything about the visuals in Kitty and Dragon. Not only was it all absolutely adorable, but everything was bright and colorful. Wide-eyed Kitty and long-tailed Dragon were engaging throughout.
Each little story included in this volume had a simple, but important message in it. I loved that so much. There's something for children to learn on nearly every page, resulting in a book that I can definitely get behind supporting.
As an educator who specializes in teaching children to read, I have a tendency to pay very close attention to reading levels. This is considered an early reader series, though I would caution parents who have struggling readers against starting with this book. If you've got a kid who doesn't quite have a lot of multi-syllables yet, it may be best to start with something a little different. That said, if your first grader already has an adequate grasp of how to decode those words, have at it.

Gah! This book is SO CUTE! I absolutely loved it. Total warm fuzzies. It's a fun, sweet, magical story of an unlikely friendship. I doubt everyone would give it five stars (my children didn't seem quite as enamored with it as I was) but I smile every time I think about it, and that goes a long way these days ;-) There's a picture of Kitty all snuggled up in a lovingly-but-imperfectly made quilt Dragon made for her, with a happy smile on her face and the cutest little heart nose... yup, I need to frame that and look at it every day. I just I really hope there will be more books about Kitty and Dragon!
Note: This edition contains the three stories (which appear to have also been published separately): Kitty and Dragon Kitty and Dragon: Kitty Gets a Cold Kitty and Dragon: Kitty Tidies Up
The cover says the book "includes 3 sweet stories." The stories are, in fact, rather sweet, and the first two challenge expectations a tad. The third one, alas, is not at all set up in the first two (in which the cave is shown as tidy), and very mildly follows gender norms and sets low expectations (if Kitty will do the bigger, harder tasks then Dragon will do one easy one when asked). Kitty was apparently raised in a barn, so how would she know housekeeping? Everyone needs to be taught how to clean a toilet, after all. More messy girls, please. We won't have enough for quite some time.
This is a cute "chapter book" for early readers that's in a similar vein to the Dragon books by Dav Pilkey. There are three stories/chapters included: Kitty and Dragon, Kitty Gets a Cold, and Kitty Tidies Up. Each chapter is basically it's own picture book set in the same world. We read the first two chapters in one sitting (because my kids demanded we keep reading!) and then the last chapter the next night. This could be read all in one sitting, or chapter by chapter. The illustrations are really cute, and each of the stories is engaging. They're very simple because this is meant for early readers, but also complex enough that they were enjoyable for my kids to listen to as I read aloud. I'm looking forward to reading this again with my 6 year old so we can practice his reading skills.
Guest review by Jaime (age 6): Which story was your favorite? "Cleanin' up a mess, I like where Dragon is cleaning under his tail."
Guest review by Link (age 4): Which story was your favorite? "I like the too noisy one." "There's some parts that I really like. I love when them was cute, like when they was kind of cute."
A digital ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for review. All opinions are unbiased and my own.
42/55 books read in 2020. Provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Full review to come soon. =^.^= In short: A cute book (love the animation style) about friendship, taking care of one another, accepting the other, and learning to work together. Probably 4 to 5 stars.
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review here and on my blog, Samwise Reviews. This was adorable. The artwork was bright and captivating, and each of the three stories included in this volume were unique and enjoyable. I felt they really showed how different friends can be while still learning how to play and take care of each other. The text was fairly simple, making this a good story for beginner readers. Definitely a cute story for all ages.

This was adorable! I am instantly drawn in to anything that has a cat on the cover or is about cats so I took the opportunity to read this one immediately.
I am so glad that I did! This collection of stories about Kitty and Dragon brought me some much needed joy. I just know that this book will make anyone happy, no matter their age.
The messages included in this were great, the art was adorable and overall this experience was so joyful.
I recommend this if you’re needing a little pick me up, you like cats or you have kids or all three!
I love this story I am a huge fan of this series and I cannot wait for more of them to come out! Like the other Kitty and Dragon books I enjoy them so much and I think they are entertaining and students love them.
Kitty & Dragon are best friends, but they’re so different! In this collection of three short stories, we follow this cute but odd pair as they get to know each other. In the first, Kitty walks into the forest and climbs all the way up a mountain to get away from the noisy barn she lived in, ignoring the fairies', frogs’, and giants’ warnings to ‘beware the silent dragon’, settling in for a nap in the cozy home at the top! But will Dragon be excited to have a new friend in his quiet life? The second finds Dragon wanting to fly a kite, but Kitty comes down with a cold! Dragon does everything he can - even uses magic! - to help make her feel better. But is he sad he didn’t get to fly his kite? And the third is a story about learning to live together: Dragon is messy, Kitty is not! Kitty tries to make Dragon less messy, but is it better just to work together? I love that these simple stories are all about accepting and loving your friends as they are, and my favourite part is leaving each story in this charming series laughing-out-loud at each reveal. The adorable, expressively illustrated characters look both magical and squishable, and the two unlikely friends’ adventures in getting along will leave you with a warm, fuzzy feeling. You’ll be left wondering what they’ll get up to, next!
2021 bk 371. A book for beginning readers or parents who want a short story to read at bedtime. This book contains three short stories (about 400 words each) that follow the adventures of a kitten who doesn't like loud noises and a lonely dragon. It was fun, but the paper is the type I thought had gone the wayside in children's book - it is easy to tear and I predict lots of tape in its future. One of the things I liked about the book is the simple line drawings that were colorful to attract attention - and that children could easily draw their own adventures using the characters as models.
Adorable. This is a reader really, but I'd easily categorize as an early level graphic novel because of its vibe. My son was enthralled and loved it. Hope we can find more of the Kitty and Dragon stories out there :)
I just love this little book. Such a cute and sweet picture book. So, so sweet. The pictures are so perfect. And the story line is cute. It is perfect for kids.
My daughter liked this book and the drawings were really nice. It was colorful and inviting to see. Even when you read the sentences the words were easy to understand. I was able to ask my kids questions about the book and they easily understood it.
Very magical series of positive stories illustrating some of the main aspects of friendship. I absolutely loved the color palette for the artwork. Each story ends with a bit of humor in its last image, which guarantees you always have a smile on your face when you finish reading!
Kitty and Dragon by Mejia Hashimoto is a very cute book for children I think my grandchildren would like it because it is a quick story. Children now days want to read quick to get back to video games. The illustrations are beautiful. Great story for children. Read it to your child or grandchild. He or she will love it.
In this collection of stories, Kitty is looking for a quiet place and meets Dragon. Then Dragon takes care of Kitty when she has a cold. And finally, Dragon and Kitty find out how to live together when one is a neat freak and the other is not.
The text in this book is very simple (think Frog & Toad type writing), but still sufficient to tell stories with a decent plot. The illustrations are adorable, and I love how Dragon and Kitty care for each other, and learn how to work together to get the chores done. They are good examples on top of being fun and cute characters to read about. Highly recommended to fantasy fans, kitty lovers, or dragon lovers just getting into chapter books.
I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book. It was so cute and so hilarious. The message about friendship was beautiful. And the illustrations are amazing. I loved Kitty's expressions.
Thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the digital review copy of this collection.
In the first part of this three-part series, Kitty looks for a quiet home and finds a place with the quiet Dragon. The later two stories focus on taking care of friends who are sick and learning to live together when friends are opposites. These best friends may be very different, but they care deeply for each other and work hard to make their friendship the best it can be.
The art in this is so cute! I love cats and dragons, and by making them best friends, this book series instantly hooked me. This one is perfect for beginning readers, introducing them to characters, plot, and connecting stories (predecessor to chapter books). It’s out in October, so keep your eyes peeled for it.
This book was recommended to me by a second grader who said it was the best thing she read this Summer. I have to say, she has good taste. I did preorder a physical copy for my library, but was excited to get the opportunity to read it myself.
It is the actually three stories in one, which is always good for young readers to be able to meet characters and then follow them in digestible amounts. I love the first story of the unlikely friendship between Kitty and Dragon. I like the quiet too, and as our school mascot is a Dragon - I totally identified with Kitty.
In the second story, I adored that Dragon first turned to a book to learn how to take care of his sick friend. And then in the third story, when Kitty accepts Dragon for himself and the friendship is so sweet... I was sold. I will recommend this to all my 1-2 graders and be on the look out for this darling series to continue..
Kitty and Dragon by Meika Hashimoto and illustrated by Gillian Reid is a collection of three short stories. These feature the adorable duo a fearless cat who is on a mission to find some quiet respite from her very noisy life at the barn; and a dragon who leads a lonely life on top of a mountain.
How their friendship develops is the theme for the first story and how the two learn that friends can be really different but still love each other the same, makes for the other two stories.
Both my kids loved the stories and the vibrant illustrations. While all the stories are written in a very simple and clear language, the big illustrations beautifully coloured bring so much joy to the readers. Brought out by Epic! the largest digital library for kids who are now creating wildest adventures with the help of world's best story writers and illustrators.
Oh my goodness! I have the toughest time trying to get my 7-year old son to read for 20 minutes a day, but I came across this book and it held his attention. He said,”this is adorable!” I have to agree. He liked it so much he immediately went onto the next one.
This book is so cute. The story is sweet and the illustrations are adorable. The illustration at end had my son cracking up.
Love this! I will be reading (and retreading) the books in this series.
