I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

200,000 years in the past, there is a society of people who have the powers of gods, at least some of them do. Others aren't so lucky. Located in a hidden valley, the humans are encroaching closer and closer.

Tries to take the usual tropes and do something a little different.

There’s nothing regular about you.

Keana has always felt like an outcast. Rescued from outside the walls of Paradis, she is unlike any other of the Devine immortals that surround her. Captain Milfort’s family loves her as their own, but others do not treat Keanna kindly. She’s never known her parents, and the other children see her as different, other. The Welcoming Ceremony, a tradition to awaken the Devine powers, is Keana’s only hope of fitting in. If she can prove she is one of them, just maybe they will accept her. Keana’s life will be forever changed as she completes the ceremony and discovers her true destiny.

P.J. Maia has built an in-depth culture of people who are worshipped like Gods. But unlike the divine we are used to; they have a diverse society where even those who would be revered as Gods are shunned. Not every immortal bears a special ability, and those who do not have power are seen as Regulars. Regulars must wear black to identify themselves and have their palms pierced. They are segregated from society, unable to even use the same entrance as those with abilities.

I enjoyed the story of Keana. The cruelties she endured forged her into a strong and capable young woman. Like any teen, she makes headstrong decisions that put her in the middle of trouble. It’s these antics that helped progress the story and made me grow to love the character. Keana’s personality and blunt attitude towards everything made me laugh and lightened up some of the heavier political moments.

While the main story was able to keep my attention, the prologue did throw me for a loop the first time I read it. One conflict led to another and I was easily lost in what was going on. Without a little bit of worldbuilding beforehand, all the new terminology and names confused me. The prologue is explained in detail later on in the story, but I could have done with a more solid foundation to start with.

I do think the author relied too heavily on the glossary to explain some terms. Each new word was linked directly to the glossary in the eBook, which is a great feature, but also a little jarring. I had to be pulled from the narrative to understand because there is little explanation surrounding them. This is one of those books you have to hit the ground running with. I do admit once I had a better grasp of the world, I went back to read the prologue and understood it more.

Despite some of its downfalls, I enjoyed the story of Keana and the society of the Devine. I am interested in seeing where the next book takes us.

Amazing Storyline

I really loved the plot and storyline of this book. This was my first time reading a fantasy book and it kept me captured. The only thing I disliked was how the conversations between characters was not consistent. What I mean is how they were named when stating who was talking. It was in first person and third person and I didn't like it. Overall I loved this book and will be recommending it o others.

I received The Missing Spirit (Eternity Departs, #1) through a Goodreads Giveaway.

I had a difficult time actually getting into reading this book. The concept behind The Missing Spirit was incredible, but the storyline had a very slow start. I felt like I was being lulled to sleep for the first few chapters, only to be stirred by brief moments of absolute confusion. Thankfully, the exciting character of Keana was able to ignite my interest and motivate me to read the rest of the book.

I definitely enjoyed reading The Missing Spirit despite the rough start, the storyline was addictive and Keana was an overall pleasant character. I'm not so sure about the other characters in the book, because I never really connected to them. It's definitely a fun read, and I highly recommend it.

An enthralling fantasy tale, The Missing Spirit tells the story of a young girl, Keana, trying to discover where she fits in the world. As all of her friends begin to receive the powers of their ancestry, Keana must journey to uncover the truth about her heritage. The book really transports readers to a whole different world with wonderful descriptions of the surroundings and fascinating back story that is provided throughout the tale. The thrilling twists and turns the plot takes will keep you turning pages – hoping to discover the answers Keana desperately seeks. It is a wonderful, imaginative book with themes of female empowerment that would be great for any woman, especially young girls coming of age.

From the moment I picked up the book I felt lost, confused, and just couldn't get into the story. The book got off to a slow start and it was hard for me to grasp the story from the beginning. The characters were confusing, and I wasn't invested in them. The journey journal dates were a little confusing to me. I guess the astrology symbols are months in this situation? The where part of it wasn't always consistent, some times it was latitude + longitude coordinates and other times it was the place written out (which I preferred). I did enjoy many of the art pieces in the book.

I felt like it had a lot of promise and I wanted to like the book since I enjoy fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, etc... but sadly this just didn't do it for me. I keep trying to make it further but end up having to put the book down, finding it difficult to immerse myself and get into the book.

The Missing Spirit takes readers on journey back to the past during the Ice Age. In this time, immortal gods ruled over cave people, mammoths and saber-toothed-tigers. The story follows main character, Keana, and her friends as they escape from danger from human tribes.

The book got off to a slow start and it was hard for me to grasp the story from the beginning. I was bit confused as to what was happening, but once I got into the book I just couldn’t get all into it. I think that this was a case of the book not working with me. The journey aspect was a bit confusing at times I found myself not really invested in the characters.

If you enjoy epic fantasy/sci-fi stories similar to this, give this book a try!

Most fantasies take readers on an adventure through fantastical realms. Maia’s novel does just that. But the journey is a little confusing. At times, it seems the author has no idea what comes next. The saving grace of this novel is the backstory and character elements. Each character is three-dimensional and includes just enough information to make them believable. The authors writing is superb, and she brings the story to life. If the author spends a little more time structuring the story through outlining, it will help readers understand the hero’s journey.

I gave this book a four rating because it was well written. The author clearly knows how to spell and punctuate. I found the underscores for explanations of words annoying. However, it is so incredibly over-detailed! I have to admit I became bored and could not finish reading. An interesting book but just not my style, I'm afraid.

The Missing Spirit grabbed my attention. The story follows Keana Milfort, a fifteen-year-old girl, and her friends and takes readers back to the ice age where immortal Gods rule over man and beast and Radiocarbon dating isn't yet thought of.

Putting aside the physiological needs like water, air, safety, etc., an interesting factor addressed early on was that the desire to belong is primal and that not belonging would relegate Keana to a life of hard labor devoid of privacy and with no special abilities or access to the outside world.

So, if her unusual appearance alone didn't make her feel like an outsider, her lack of invitation to the Lumen Academy surely would.

Into this eclectic mix that we come to know as Keana's life, we witness talk of adoption and heritage, scrypaintings and unfunerals along with alcoholic concoctions and woolly mammoth rides.

As someone who grew up watching Land of the Lost and enjoys getting away to do fossil hunting every now and then, I appreciated this ice age story. The world-building was unique and the detailing captivating.

I was impressed by the 'When' and 'Where' denoted in the chapter introductions and quite fond of the artwork. The Lumen Tribune was impressive as well.

This story resembles a fragmented novel with segments strong on character recognition and dialogue.

This book was provided by the generosity of publicist Lucas Jones.

I was one of the lucky contestants on winning The Missing Spirit by P.J. Maia off of GoodReads. It is a book that boasts mythology, fantasy, and adventure. It had all the trigger words to make me interested in the book, but alas, this was a challenging read to get through.

It took me two tries, but I should have DNF this book. The story was very confusing and hard to get into. Between the dialog, constant character changes, footnotes and dictionaries, I couldn’t fully grasp the story. There was soooo much going on!

It seems as if Maia pulled inspiration from all the pop-culture fantasy in media. The world described in The Missing Spirit reminded me of a mash-up between the movie Atlantis: The Lost Empire and the mythical Fields of Elysium from the Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey video game. The technology used is so advanced, yet lost to the modern world, that even I don’t fully understand what they do.

I had high hopes for this book, but it just didn’t do it for me. I rated it a two-star only because I was trying to find the end of all the chaos.

🤓 AGUARDANDO ANSIOSAMENTE A CONTINUAÇÃO 📚
As reviravoltas me pegaram de surpresa e o final... Me deixou com gostinho de quero mais ❤
P. J., não deixe seus leitores na mão 😅
