Read this with my granddaughters, aged 6 and 8. Both loved it so much! The perfect balance between information and gloriously explicit illustrations makes the book accessible and interesting for both ages. Needless to say, the youngest was mostly interested in poo!
Atlika tikai nobrīnīties How? How do you know that?
Packed full of all sorts of fun facts, this book is sure to draw a wide audience of readers who like science and even those who just like the fabulous illustrations. Organized in three parts - the human body, animal kingdom, and earth and science - this collection of facts told in a comic book style will have readers laughing and sniggering throughout the book. Highly recommend for elementary and middle school students!
I thought we’d skim this or read a few here and there but my 7 year old twins loved it so much and refused to skip a page! It took us 3 weeks to get through but it had such interesting facts and helpful illustrations! I learned a ton!
A Day in the Life of a Poo, a Gnu and You is the kid’s nonfiction book that you need in your life. Not only will you laugh your socks off, you’ll learn some amazing facts while doing it! It is the funniest, most entertaining and totally unique general nonfiction books for kids around. I guarantee that this is going to be the most looked-at nonfiction book in my school library because it screams ‘PICK ME UP!’
It is bursting with short comics that give kids a glimpse in to the life of organs in your body, gross bodily functions, animals of all shapes and sizes, plants, planets, rainbows and much, much more. You’ll learn how farts form, where poo goes when you flush it away, how a sea jelly swims, what a pangolin’s scales are made out of, and how bananas grow. As well as the ‘Day in the Life of a…’ pages there are also ‘The Bigger Picture’ sections which give extra detail, and secret diary sections which show you extracts from the secret diaries of an earthworm, a red blood cell, and a lightning bolt. Each thing, whether it is a hand, a pimple or a worm has a unique personality and a different way to tell its story.
This is a book is super accessible for kids of all ages, with simple text and bright, funny illustrations that anyone. It’s a nonfiction book that parents and teachers especially will love sharing with kids. Between Mike’s text and Jess’s illustrations you will be laughing your head off. They have managed to pack a lot of information into a page or two of comic, with just enough detail to astound you. Jess’s illustrations always make me laugh and she has had plenty of different things to draw in this book. I love the expressions she gives to the characters, even each individual toe on the foot.
Some of my favourite facts from the book include:
a single elephant can wee up to 9 litres at a time male platypuses have poisonous foot spurs the amount that a sloth poos once a week is like us doing a poo the size of a small dog there are blue bananas! A Day in the Life of Poo, a Gnu and You is going to be incredibly popular with kids. The comic format means that my graphic novel fans (of which there are many at my school) will gobble this book up. I just need to buy myself a copy because the library copy will get issued and passed around all of the kids.

Where was this ESSENTIAL book when I was in middle school? The author explores the human body, the animal kingdom and earth and science. Fun, fascinating facts and cartoon-like illustrations by Jess Bradley make this a great pick for reluctant readers and fans of non-fiction. This is a teaching tool for any beginning science class as well.
Features include "A Day in the Life of a Hiccup," "A Day in the Life of a Pimple, how your major organs work, and "You and Your Poo" teaches how to tell if you need more fiber, more water or if your poo is healthy! Any middle school reader will love that!
In the animal world, earthworms, spiders, dung beetles, weird types of fish like the gulper eel and the long-nosed chimaera, koalas, skunks, pandas and other animals are highlighted. Did you know pandas poop up to fifty times in one day or that worms can be both female and male?
In the science and earth section, readers will learn about some plants, fungi, weather, volcanos, auroras among many other subjects. A fun-filled, illustrated glossary ends the book. Kids won't even realize how much they've learned because this little gem is so much fun to read. Who knew science was so cool?
HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. This is a must-have, must-read for any science buff and even those readers, like me, who really aren't into science. Note to educational publishers: maybe if you made science books more fun, more kids would excel in the sciences.
Grade 4 and up. Easy to read, each page is filled with illustrations and fun facts. The pages will turn fast!
Colorful cartoon-like art and a conversational writing style (with humor and a fair amount of gross-out) make this an epically browsable title. The information is organized into three broad topics – the human body, the animal kingdom, and earth and science. The section covering the human body focuses on anatomy and physiology, with a fair number of pages devoted to urine, poo, and farts. The animal kingdom chapter describes animals and insects with a weirdness cachet, such as dung beetles, deadly jellies and colossal squid. In the earth and science chapter, readers can learn about lots of random science, from bananas and Venus Flytraps, to weather and space. There’s a lot of information covered with just enough depth for browsing. Information is presented in graphic panels of different sizes as part of a general “snapshot” of a topic; there are 2-page spreads of more in depth information that include diagrams; and there are “secret diaries,” which are often in narrative form, from the perspective of a 10-year old’s nose, for instance.
I wouldn’t call this an exhaustive source on any one topic, but it’s a fun book to pick up and leaf through for kids who like books of facts. A detailed table of contents makes finding a preferred topic easy, and there’s a glossary for tricky words.
It might seem goofy to rate a children's book about animal life cycles and poop 5 stars, but 5 stars is all Goodreads gives me to work with, so there you go. I am rating this on how much my children have enjoyed this book, which is to say: a tremendous amount.
We have checked this out from the library 3 separate times.
I have one son who is an avid reader and one son who is a somewhat reluctant reader. They have both asked for this book to be re-checked out (somewhat unheard of). On the second time we checked it out, my reluctant reader son said, "Can we re-read some of the Secret Diary pages again?" I didn't even remember that the book was divided up that way, but there you go. It really made an impression on him.
The illustrations in this are so cute. I'd really recommend it if you have kids interested in life sciences and nature. But who knows, you might capture some unexpected attention just because of how irreverent and fun it is.
This was a pretty decent nonfiction book (told in graphic novel format) that covers A LOT of information. It could be used for readers to just look at the pages that interest them as each page is stand alone (a few refer back to previous pages but have a note at the bottom). I found myself torn often between thinking that the page didn't include enough information about the topic and that the page included too much information about the topic. Often on the same topic! It must be a hard balance for the author. There is a plucky tone throughout (and one instant where a rock or plant or something, I forget which, calls another a "loser," which I didn't particularly like). There is definitely some gross out factors too that some young readers will enjoy. Not my favorite book but I can see kids enjoying it.
Very charming book to teach children some of the highlights of world history. The authors skillfully mix humour with historical accuracy and education.
To make a few critical remarks: Their description of the Middle Ages is oversimplified as an era of knights (only in parts of the world, and only in the second half of the Middle Ages) wars (same in all periods) and unnecesary deaths (same in all periods).
Queen Elizabeth I is called a 'drama queen' (I think, I read the Dutch translation), which simply is not true if you compare her behaviour to other monarchs. Unconscious sexism for the sake of a pun?
A wonderful graphic guide for kids that I stumbled upon by chance and now recommend to every kid between 7 and 11 years old. It’s split into three sections: the human body, the animal kingdom, and earth and science. The guide covers topics such as the function of the brain, the life of bees and how a light bulb works in one to two pages. Both the cartoons and the texts are hilarious and entertaining to read which makes keeping the facts easy and fun. Perfect for book-shy children to become engrossed with reading!
A wonderfully fun book jam packed with facts and information, all the while with age appropriate clean humor and lightness.
Displayed into sections and illustrated in cartoon style, A Day in the Life of a Poo, A Gnu and You is informative, entertaining and easy to digest as many of the facts are shared in small bits, either a full page or a double spread with personified objects and anthropomorphised animals.
It is a delight of a book that kept us building knowledge the further we got into it.
What a fun book! I read this out loud with the boys (10 and 13) and we all enjoyed it immensely. It's a non-fiction book about the human body, the animal kingdom, the earth and science - so almost everything! Each page or page spread is a comic in the form of "A day in the life of... " or a secret diary. Its funny, candid, and thoroughly enjoyable.
Since it's chock full of pictures, I'll add the requisite year of visual art review - the comic images are cute, quirky, full of personality, and absolutely perfect for this book.
A brief look at the daily life of different living and non-living things from the human body, animal kingdom, Earth, and general science. For the kids that want to know about everything! The format makes all this information much less overwhelming with all the comics, diagrams, and "secret diaries." For kids currently reading the Science Comics or who have read all the Elise Gravel and Who Would Win? books.
This graphic guide to "The Human Body", "The Animal Kingdom", and "Earth and Science" is full of fascinating facts told in little snippets with lots of entertaining graphics. This would be a great little reference book for the intermediate science classroom or a great gift for that kid who craves learning little factoids about a variety of subjects. This book is 1 of 10 titles nominated for the 2023 Kentucky Bluegrass Award for grades 3-5.
A fun, browseable, comic-style book packed with information. The word "poo" in the title will reel them in, and the bits of humor will keep them reading. Personally, I would have preferred a focus on one of the topics--the human body, animal kingdom or the environment, but I don't think kids will mind one bit. Sure to be of high interest to reluctant readers.
An adorable, fun, and informative kids' nonfiction graphic novel. Every page is about a different [organ, creature, etc] and there is something unusual/interesting and a bit of a joke to go along with pretty much every one.
Would make a great elementary science read for most kids--answering just a few of those endless WHYs!
Hilarious! Informative! Sure to be a hit! Just go on and buy this one as quick as you can for ALL the kiddos you know. The puns were my favorite. I also loved how the book is arranged… one page of information, illustrations, graphic novel like panels, words that were the right size… not huge, but also not teeny tiny! Got get a copy, seriously 😉
5 stars. Outstanding mix of facts and humor, as tag line says: a laugh out loud guide to life on earth. Perfect for browsing favorite topics from the table of contents or reading straight through. Graphic novel format tidily breaks up the tidbits of information. Cheeky illustrations are so fun! There’s a glossary, wish there was a list of recommended reading or source material.
Cute and quick entries on everything from your nose to anglerfish to Japanese knotweed. The presentation will appeal to many students, I think it's a bit young for middle grade.
