This little board book briefly and simply tells the story of George Washington, the first President of the United States. Parents can use this book to introduce the person of Washington to very young children through simple words and bright pictures
The Story of George Washington, written by Patricia A. Pingry, is a 200-word board book revealing George Washington’s childhood, jobs, farm life, and how he became the first president of the United States of America. It is part of the extraordinary The Story of... series.
This book prepares younger readers for elementary school years, giving them a broad picture of the birth of our country and constitution, why Washington was chosen to lead it, and how our country’s capital is named after him.
I love this series of books, detailing important historical figures in American history. It’s a fun and effective way to teach little readers, with simple, informative text and fun, colorful, detailed illustrations.

“On Presidents’ Day, we celebrate the birthday of George Washington, the very first president of the United States,” Patricia A. Pingry begins in her children’s book, The Story of George Washington.
~ What ~ This twenty-four-page board book with rounded corners targets children ages two to five years old. With no scary scenes, it partially contains the story of America’s first president. Colorful, engaging illustrations cover both sides of the pages with an easy-to-read font size.
The book explains that George Washington, “the father of our county,” was born in Virginia, tried to tell the truth, was a surveyor, farmer, and the leader of America’s army. After the war, he helped adopt the U.S. Constitution, became our president, and later moved to Mount Vernon. The ending includes how our capital and a monument are named after him and his face is depicted on our currency.
~Why ~ This is an educational story about our president and some of his life. I appreciate it mentioned the story about cutting down the cherry tree and the fact he had slaves on his five farms. There is enough activity in the pictures to keep young ones interested while reading.
~ Why Not ~ Some may not like a history book that contains slaves, but they were an integral part of society back then. There are many complicated words that young ones may not understand or comprehend, but they could be explained by the reader. The book may be too hard for beginner readers with its three-to six-syllable words.
~ Wish ~ With the board book being for toddlers, its contents are more for kindergartens and first graders who may want to know the history of America. I wish it had less detail for its targeted audience or reformatted into a regular book for older children.
~ Want ~ If you are looking for a series about famous people, the author has several books for young ones available, and this one on Washington will give a young one plenty to learn about a past U.S. president.
Thanks to Hachette Book Group, WorthyKids, and the author for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
"Every post is honorable in which a man can serve his country."
"Unless some one pops in, unexpectedly, Mrs. Washington and myself will do what I believe has not been [done] within the last twenty years by us, that is to set down to dinner by ourselves."
"Having now finished the work assigned me, I retire from the great theatre of Action."
"Gentlemen, you will permit me to put on my spectacles, for, I have grown not only gray, but almost blind in the service of my country."

The Story of George Washington by Patricia A. Pingry is a part of the "Story Of" reader series from Worthy Kids. This is a great series to get children thinking about United States history.
The Story of George Washington helps children see the basics of who George Washington was, learn the basics of the story of the cherry tree, see his influence on the beginning of our country and know that he was our first President. While some of the words may be a little big, as a whole this is a great book. Parents can fill in some of the gaps orally if questions are asked and explain in more details or help children find the answers they are looking for.
With Presidents Day coming up in February, this would make a great book to put in a toddler's library. The book contains about 200 words, is 24 pages long and has brightly-colored eye-catching pictures. The book measures about six inches square so would be easy for small hands to hold and turn the pages. The Story of George Washington would also give children an early glimpse of American history before kindergarten.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions within this review are my own.
The Story of George Washington is a children’s book covering his life and it explained who we celebrate him on President’s Day. He was the first president of the United States and he is known as the father of our country. He was born on February 22, 1732. He is famously known for him chopping down a cherry tree in his childhood and he was very honest to openly to admit it. The book touched on what he did and how many farms he managed. It discussed the Revolutionary War and how he signed the U.S. Constitution. It revealed how the United States was named after him.
I would recommend this children’s book to any child aged 2-6. It described the life of George Washington and the background where kids can easily learn about America and the first president. I immensely loved how it gave a quick overview of his life and it taught children history. This book could easily become the first building block of American history for our children. I loved how colorful the book was and how it helped to catch kid’s attention.
"I received this book free from the publisher, Hachette Book Group/Faithwords/ Worthy Kids for my honest review.
Why is George Washington one of the people on Mt. Rushmore? Or why is there a Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. These questions and much more are answered in THE STORY OF GEORGE WASHINGTON. Author Patricia A. Pingry uses simple words combined with interesting illustrations from Jesús López to teach children about the life of George Washington, the first president of the United States.
For example, “During the Revolutionary War, George was the leader of America’s army. After eight years, the British surrendered to him at Yorktown, Virginia.” This well-written book can be read over and over—and especially around the annual President’s Day holiday. I recommend THE STORY OF GEORGE WASHINGTON.
The Story of George Washington, our first President of the United States, George Washington, has his story told, from his birth to his retirement. Author Patricia A. Pingry shares President Washington’s struggle for the birth of our nation as an Army general, a slave-owning farmer, and one of the writers of the United States Constitution. This is a good book to explain an important figure in the history of the United States.
Author Patricia A. Pingry does a great job making this important figure in American history understandable and relatable for little ones. The Story of George Washington is one book in “The Story of” series written by this author teaching children about important figures in American history.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest opinion.
I was surprised to see board books about Presidents!
This provides a short overview of the life of George Washington. The book shares minimal information in a concise manner. Some children may not understand all that he did or the significance, but the information is presented in such a way as not to be overwhelming or too much for this age group.
The illustrations are appealing. One thing I like is that the books end with a quote related to the President.
This set would be a good way to introduce children to a little bit of history and would go well with class lessons in the early elementary classroom for President's Day.
I found out there is a series of books including Rosa Parks, The Mayflower, The Star Spangled Banner, and Martin Luther King, Jr.
I received copies of these books from Hachette book group for my honest review. Thank you.
Who exactly was George Washington? Even the youngest learner will come away with the who, the what, and the why. Books for children and about our American History are way up on my list. Pingry does a great job telling little ones about this American hero and America's first president.. The illustrations are superb and will keep even the youngest student turning the pages. Highly recommended for the home school library and young children.
The Story of George Washington is presented easily and clearly in this children's book. The illustrations are striking, the message is clear, and our author does a great job of teaching little readers about an important historical accuracy.
Personal Reaction: I didn't really enjoy this book solely because I do not like history, and didn't find this book very interesting. But, I do think it would be a great book to introduce to elementary students, and it gives good information on who George Washington was.
Purpose/Use in Classroom: This book would be great for a read aloud during a unit on history, particularly on historical figures. It would also be great to use during a history unit on the US presidents. This could also be used for an independent read for students who are very interested in history, and want to learn more about George Washington, the first president of the United States. This book could be used for nonfiction purposes, and introducing biographies into a literature curriculum.
We all know who George Washington is. He is one of the most important people in American History. The book is full of colors. The story of the book is by chronological order which students can have really good timeline in mind. One of the big reasons why I pick this book not only because he is the first president in America but also I have been to his house two times : )
I love GW, so I was SUPER EXCITED to get a board book bio for the little one. However... Board book length kinda OVERsimplifies aspects. And it perpetuates the cherry tree urban legend. But still, overall, 4 of 5 stars for starting the conversation AND just for existing! How many people are awesome enough to get immortalized in a board book?!?
