From the same series of composer biographies also derived from the second edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians , this book is the definitive reference to Ludwig van Beethoven's life and works. Offering new details on Beethoven's posthumous influence as well as political appropriations of his work, this compact volume is an essential starting point for any research on one of the best-known classical composers. In addition to a concise biographical profile reflecting the latest scholarship, an up-to-date list of works, an extensive bibliography and index, as well as eight pages of black and white illustrations are also included in the book.
Joseph Wilfred Kerman -- born Zukerman -- (1924 - 2014) was an American critic and musicologist. One of the leading musicologists of his generation, his 1985 book Contemplating Music: Challenges to Musicology (published in the UK as Musicology) was described by Philip Brett in The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians as "a defining moment in the field." He was Professor Emeritus of Musicology at the University of California, Berkeley.
Clean accurate biography of Beethoven. No frills, just the facts, but they are all correct and all there. Some interesting commentary on his musical works.
