In an age of viruses and hackers, electronic eavesdropping, and electronic fraud on a global scale, security is paramount. The purpose of this book is to provide a practical survey of both the principles and practice of cryptography and network security. The first part of the book explores the basic issues to be addressed by a network security capability and provides a tutorial and survey of cryptography and network security technology. The latter part of the book deals with the practice of network security, covering practical applications that have been implemented and are in use to provide network security. The 8th Edition captures innovations and improvements in cryptography and network security, while maintaining broad and comprehensive coverage of the entire field. In many places, the narrative has been clarified and tightened, and illustrations have been improved based on extensive reviews by professors who teach the subject and by professionals working in the field.
This title is also available digitally as a standalone Pearson eText. This option gives students affordable access to learning materials, so they come to class ready to succeed.
William Stallings is an American author. He has written computer science textbooks on operating systems, computer networks, computer organization, and cryptography.
The edition I had was probably a bit out of date but it was readable and fairly clearly explained, although there were some parts where it seemed like the author was just rehashing the relevant RFC/standard. This is good for people who know nothing liek me as a sort of overview, but if u are looking for theoretical details or at the other end of the spectrum, practical implementation details, better find a different book.
EDIT: please note a lot of stuff in this book e.g. the PGP email stuff is out of date and not secure, has problems
I have been reading this book as a text book in my college years and also at graduate school. It is an excellent reference book for anyone in the security field
I like this book because it's way of explaining concepts is clear and concise .. and everything written in each chapter is important to read and understand
This isn't one of the harder books on the topic, but sometimes that can be a good thing. This is one of the better intro type books I've read. Definitely recommended.
Great book to add to your library, very detailed, and the concepts are well explained. I've been reading this book in a Data Security course at the university.
It was great to have it from my friend , and you know it's a study book for that I rated it with 3 , but really I didn't read the whole book , and still I didn't like the way its information presented to the students :( , it was really black , and no more hash explanation that I personally like to see in IT Books. even that I like Cryptography so much , but this book wasn't something which will make you love it .
I gives you the principles of cryptography, although some believes it's a good start, I think you need to be an expert or someone with IT background to get the benefit you expect. Great book to add to your library, very detailed and concepts are well explained.
