It may have been after 11 a.m. when the planes flew away. And the silence fell. The few people who had survived were lying down. The children didn’t cry, the wounded didn’t groan, because the silence was stronger—so strong no one made a peep. At last they began to get up, carefully, because they were afraid what world would meet their eyes. First they looked into the sky—empty. Then they looked all around—and didn’t recognize what they saw. Because how could they recognize something from nothing? Because nothing was left, the valley was burned out, and the charred beams were still smoldering down below, amid the few chimneys that had remained standing.
Only then did a single wail, a single shout escape from the mouths of the survivors.
