A Parade for George Washington

Rate this book
Crowds cheering, trumpets sounding, and cannons firing! Follow along as George Washington journeys from Virginia to his inauguration in New York City.

After the Revolutionary War, the newly formed U.S. Congress chose the first president. Every vote was for Washington.

So began Washington's week-long trip from his home in Virginia to New York City, where he would be inaugurated. At every stop on George Washington's route, people were determined to celebrate their very first president. In Baltimore citizens rode along with Washington for seven miles, in Philadelphia people chanted "Long live George Washington," and in Elizabethtown, NJ, Washington was met with a parade of boats so spectacular that he would later write in his diary: "the decorations of the ships, the roar of cannon . . . filled my mind with sensations."

David A. Adler deftly retells this joyous journey in information-packed prose, while John O'Brien masterfully illustrates our complex and beautiful new nation in his signature style. Included in the meticulously detailed artwork are period-accurate maritime signal flags for kids to decode and buildings like Federal Hall in New York City that still stand today. Back matter includes a time line, source notes, and a bibliography.

David Abraham Adler is an American children's author. He was born in New York City, New York in 1947. He graduated from Queens College in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics and education. For the next nine years, he worked as a mathematics teacher for the New York City Board of Education, while taking classes towards a master's degree in marketing, a degree he was awarded by New York University in 1971. In that same year, a question from his then-three-year-old nephew inspired Adler to write his first story, A Little at a Time, subsequently published by Random House in 1976. Adler's next project, a series of math books, drew on his experience as a math teacher. In 1977, he created his most famous character, Cam Jansen, originally featured in Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Stolen Diamonds, which was published that year.

Adler married psychologist Renee Hamada in 1973, and their first child, Michael, was born in 1977. By that time Adler had taken a break from teaching and, while his wife continued her work, he stayed home, took care of Michael, and began a full-time writing career.

Adler's son, Michael S. Adler, is now the co-author of several books with his father, including A Picture Book of Sam Adams, A Picture Book of John Hancock, and A Picture Book of James and Dolly Madison. Another son, Edward, was the inspiration for Adler's Andy Russell series, with the events described in the series loosely based on adventures the Adler family had with Edward's enthusiasm and his pets.

As of November 2008, Adler has three sons and two grandsons. He lives in Woodmere, New York.

Young children can follow Washington on his trip to take the oath of office in New York - wonderful art. I guess it was one of those days were you always remember where you were; then you tell the story to your children, grandchildren and (maybe) great grandchildren. Really made this historic event very vivid for me.

It takes a while for George Washington to make his way from his home in Virginia to New York City. George had to make the journey on horseback and not a car or a train because they didn't exist. It would take a week for George to arrive in New York, where he would be sworn in as the first President of the United States of America. This book will take your young reader along with George on his journey, a parade at every stop. Everyone was so excited to see the General, soon to be President. The trek is also well displayed in wonderful illustrations and maps.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book about George Washington's parade as he came to the Presidency. This book could be used for school reports as well as recreational reading. The illustrations are excellent and colorful with lots of detail. There are pieces of maps throughout to show his journey. I had never heard about so much celebration surrounding his move to become the President. The book captures the love of the nation for this humble man, the father of a new United States of America. I learned so much, especially the part about the ships in the harbor doing a celebration, too. There is a list of historical dates/timelines at the end of the book as well as source notes and a bibliography. Highly recommended for an American History unit and Grades 4-6.

As an introvert, I can only imagine how tired poor Washington must have been after all these parades. But, I bet he felt really loved by the people who put in so much time and effort to make him feel special. A fun little book and a nice tribute to Washington.

I'm a big fan of John O'Brien's work, so you can imagine how excited I was when I picked up this book and realized that he was the illustrator! Flapdoodle: Pure Nonsense from American Folklore and Mistakes That Worked: 40 Familiar Inventions & How They Came to Be, and now this book... O'Brien always manages to crop up when I last expect him, so that was very fun!

This is a glimpse into one part of Washington's life, his parade-filled journey from Mount Vernon, Virginia to Federal Hall in NYC for his inauguration. Suitable even for the younger picture book crowd and is a great springboard to discuss the similarities and differences in America and presidential inaugurations from the first president to what children today have seen with the most recent inauguration(s).

A different perspective on a much loved historical figure: George Washington. I liked the illustrations, the use of quotes, sources listed at the end and the unique perspective. However, with all of that being said, overall I was left wanting more after reading this book. It was okay, but not one I will be recommending to students.
