To err is human, to end up in the supernatural afterlife in a hot dog suit is divine.
When Eloise Worthington drops dead and awakens in the afterlife, she knows she doesn’t belong—mainly because she’s surrounded by a supernatural cocktail of species she never knew existed. Gods, witches, vampires, werewolves—and now Eloise, a middle-aged human more concerned with getting her way than getting out of someone else’s. She quickly learns that this supernatural retirement village isn’t the last stop on the Afterlife Express and villagers can be blinked out of existence, which is exactly what happens to Zeus.
Yes, that Zeus.
Unfortunately, it appears that Eloise is to blame—or is she? Never one to shy away from a challenge—although her idea of a challenge usually involves tequila and a cartwheel—Eloise sets out to clear her name and, in the process, figure out where she truly belongs.
Welcome to Divine Place, because sometimes a fresh start requires a little divine intervention.

Murder and Mahjong is the first book in the Divine Place supernatural cozy mystery series by Annabel Chase. I am a huge fan of this author and was so excited to hear about a new series and I was not disappointed. If you read her Federal Bureau of Magic Series, you will recognize the main character in this new series from the last book. And if your not reading that series you should be. Oh wait, I got side tracked .
Eloise Worthington dies and falls (literally) into a place she doesn't belong, a purgatory of sorts for the supernatural. She may or may not have killed Zeus. Yep, that one.
I loved this book! Eloise made me laugh and the setting is fantastic and descriptive.
The mystery was so well thought out and perfectly paced. I LOVED IT !!!!
Murder and Mahjong is the first title in the Divine Place series which is marketed as a Paranormal Cozy Mystery, but could, in my opinion, also fall under the new genre of Paranormal Women’s Fiction since our heroine, Eloise is of that age group and just might have some powers of her own. It’s up to the interpretation of each reader, but I think this one falls in both genres.
I laughed my backside off with Eloise’s sudden demise into what she never, ever expected to exist. A ‘holding’ place, so to speak, a supernatural purgatory, a limbo where demi-gods, myths, and the paranormal go when they die before being admitted to their ‘final’ destination. Well, Eloise isn’t supernatural… but it seems she did manage to kill one when landing on Zeus upon arrival. Who would have thought that a middle-aged woman dressed in a hot dog costume could take out one of the old gods? Eloise isn’t buying it, and the longer she’s in Divine Place the more she’s convinced there is a murderer afoot. And, lucky her, Zeus’s’ ex-wife Hera has just appointed her marshall with a side-kick to find out exactly how her annoying ex-husband was killed.
There are plenty of suspects, lots of funny and intriguing characters, some hotheads, some too-cool-for-school types, and the one lone human, Eloise. Together most are wanting to discover who killed Zeus… and one who plans on them never figuring it out. I had fun here and will be back in Divine Place for the rest of the series. If you love snarky heroines, the unusual, and love to solve any puzzle then Murder and Mahjong would be perfect for you.
Eloise Worthington drops dead and awakens in the afterlife wearing a hotdog suit and laying upon the corpse of Zeus – yes, that Zeus. Whom she may or may not have flattened out of existence. She’s in some sort of supernatural retirement village/purgatory (with an annoying Homeowners Association) where gods, witches, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, fairies, and other supernatural beings go to spend their “retirement” until they reach Oblivion (death for the “dead”).
She’s on the hook for murdering a god, unless she can figure out whodunnit, clear her name, and determine why she was in that hot dog suit in the first place. She’s as much a curiosity to the residents of the town as they are to her; humans generally don’t end up in Divine Place, a village where the only “law” is the HOA. (“I balked. ‘Wait, you have a committee that regulates whether you can stick pin flamingos on your front lawn, but not to investigate if someone gets obliterated?’ Hera gave an airy wave. ‘Priorities, Miss Worthington. We all have to look at your lawn.”) The horrible HOA president appoints her as the town marshal so she can clear herself by finding the guilty party, and appoints Zeus’ son, Cole, as Eloise’s deputy. Cole is a demigod, protector of justice and social order, and the right man to pitch in since he and his father “… weren’t what you’d call close.”
This book was way better than I anticipated. Witty dialogue, well written, an interesting mystery with a smart-mouthed main character, and a Siamese cat who breaches the afterlife to come be with her human. Watching Eloise get her sea legs and figure out where she belongs was more entertaining and touching than I expected. And the parts about the HOA rang true. I will read more in this series.
Enjoyable but hoping the future stories are better
I enjoyed this entry into a new series, I had even read the Fury story that starts this one. I really enjoy the Fury series. For me, this book missed the mark a bit. It was cute and fun but I found the writing needs to be tightened up a bit. Too much a little of this and a little of that but not enough substance of any one thing to really get involved with.
I also find the Eloise character a bit of a horror. Which I guess she has to be to end up in a purgatory situation. Though some of her comments I find humorous and even her outlook has moments, yet the negative things she said she has done, I find more annoying and being disgusted with humanity. I guess you shouldn’t end up in a horrible place for being a narcissist or shallow, but it also doesn’t make for a great character. Instead of Eloise, I’m wondering if you should have named her ‘Karen’?
Hopefully the next book in the series will be better and that Eloise herself begins the process of becoming a better person. Wouldn’t you do that if it meant ascension to a better world, and if you become worse, you descend? Maybe she needs a Chidi in her life as the Good Place TV series has a similar feel to it, to teach her more about the concepts of right and wrong. Eloise could seriously use the instruction.
It does seem a bit odd that Hera offers her a Marshall position. Creating and keeping it especially for her, when in the past all the supernaturals have said they don’t have murder or any severe crimes in the Divine Place. Being a Paranormal Cozy Mystery, murder is likely but if death and murder start to occur, wouldn’t you start thinking it was a human that brought it into your sphere of existence? Especially if it didn’t happen before she appeared.
I enjoy this author so I will give another attempt to the series with the next book, but hopefully the writing for it improves as well as better plots and character development.
A new idea.. or at least one I haven't read before!!
This ties in loosely with the Chipping Cheddar Fury series. In one of the tales in that series Eloise Worthington dies after she's bitten by a snake.. the snake is actually her neighbour Mrs Langley who's the victim of an unfortunate incident. Eloise is not popular before she dies being a rather contrary individual who often protests over rather insignificant things in a hot dog suit!!
Eloise doesn't end up where she should after death.. by some strange mischance she falls from the sky into Divine Place.. a sort of halfway world for dead supernaturals or forgotten gods.. landing on the dead body of Zeus the Greek god of thunder she appears to have sent him to oblivion.. with no supernatural blood it creates consternation when a human arrives and she's tasked with finding out who actually killed Zeus.
With Cole, Zeus's illegitimate son, to help her and her cat Mischief who appears from across the rainbow bridge. Can Eloise find a way to carry on "living" in this rather strange in-between?
I really didn't like this book and DNF. Mainly because I disliked the mc. She wasn't a good person, but then wondered why she ended up in "purgatory"? Well, maybe because you admitted to stealing, getting naked when drunk, sleeping around, dissing other people and their opinions as not important, drinking too much regularly, can't keep a job, is extremely ungrateful, bitchy and mean. And is alone, unmarried and a very critical person age 47, but none the wiser as to why you're alone and in purgatory? Absolutely no self reflection and taking any responsibility at that age? Even after death, in a hotdog suit?!
Add to that an even duller male lead, a boring setting that sounds like the Stepford Wives for super naturals, and I just wasn't interested to find out what happened to Zeus. Pity, as I adore paranormal books that include mythological gods. And I like this author. But I just couldn't bother and decided to move along.
A really different read. A human suddenly finds herself dropped onto the body of Zeus in a supernatural Purgatory. Now to clear her name she has to find the real killer and is appointed to the role of 'marshall'. The characters are all a mix from varies myths and legends, some larger than life. Whilst our heroine is an outspoken, confident woman who suffers from 'hot flashes' and who is trying to beat the label of the 'only 'human' in a supernatural community. A community that has more rules and regulations then you can put down on paper and all run by the iron hand of Hera, Zeus's ex wife. Who could have obliterated Zeus? There are numerous candidates, from the women he seduced to the gods he annoyed and not forgetting his dysfunctional family. Will she unravel the mystery?
I actually enjoyed reading this new book for a new series by a author i absolutely love. It was very different to the usual type of cosy mysteries. It is set in a in between world between hell and heaven. A place for supernaturals to go when they die but have some sort of problem. Eloise Worthington is a 47 year old woman who dies after being bit by a snake. How does she end up Divine Place? Why did she end up there? These are questions that need to be explored. On her arrival she lands on top of Zeus. Eloise is given the task of investigating the death and to find out who is responsible. Eloise meets some very interesting characters especially a very attractive man called Cole who was the son of Zeus. I can't wait to read more and find out how Eloise copes in this new world.
This is a cute cozy mystery. Eloise Worthington somehow has been dropped in purgatory for supernaturals known as the Divine Place. Unfortunately she literally fell on top of the recently obliterated Zeus and now its her job to figure out who killed the thunder god. With the help of vampires, witches, and a cute demigod deputy Eloise needs to find the murderer before she herself is obliterated.
This is my first book by Annabel Chase. I appreciated Eloise's snark and confidence. A lone human surrounded by gods, fairies, and other supernatural folk needs to know how to bluff. Eloise is frank and honest about her faults and she reminds me of Elinore Shellstrop from the Good Place. I can't wait to see how the series progresses.
Eloise found herself lying on top of a big dead guy. Wasn't sure how she got there. Guy turns out to be Zeus. Yeah, THE Zeus. Witnesses exclaimed she fell out of the sky and landed on top of him. Did she kill him? He's not squished or shattered. But biy is the president of the HOA pissed. His ex-wife Hera. Turns out she's sort of in purgatory for supernatural entities like vamps and shifters plus gods/goddesses no longer worshipped. Eloise must figure out who killed Zeus before Hera obliterates her. And boy, does she miss her cat Mischief.
I found the first half of this book dragged a bit, but I'm unsure whether that is because it was book 1 of a series and the world needed building, or if it is because I found the mc difficult to like. I flew through the second half of the book though, and even though I'd already worked out the who and why, the how was interesting. I liked the mc's relationship with Mischief though, and liked where the development of the character was heading. So at this point I am unsure whether I will read any more of the series.
A gently exciting start to a new series featuring a middle-aged human woman who dies and somehow ends up in a supernatural limbo. And naturally she's from Chipping Cheddar, but not blessed with the Sight, she's totally unfamiliar with the supernatural world. Her interactions with gods, goddesses, demigods, and more prosaic supernaturals are entertaining, and the series promises much more of the same.
If you've never read annabel case's books you're in for a massive treat. She's an imaginative and highly talented writer. However, I would start on her first book in her first series and work your way through, that way you won't be waiting and gnashing your teeth for the next book in this series. Though to be fair to Annabel she does manage to keep her fans highly satisfied
Annabel Chase has unique ideas and wonderful ways to present them. We enter a whole new world created by Annabel Chase, this is a delightful storyline that came off of her Federal Bureau of investigation of paranormal series, or the "Fury" series. That story was located in Chipping Cheddar, Maryland. I already love this diverse new world that takes us beyond. Great concept, a joy to read. Enjoy!
This book was very much a surprise delight. I'll be honest: the cover didn't appeal to me, the title didn't appeal to me, and even the blurb - despite hitting on a few key things I like - didn't do much for me. If I didn't completely trust the author to deliver a good book, I wouldn't have picked it up. But boy was I glad I did. Solid characters, solid setting, and a resolution to the mystery that was more satisfying than almost any I've read.
I can't decide if I like this series or not yet. I love Annabel Chase's other books but this was difficult to read. The main character Eloise is dead but it supernatural purgatory. You find out in life she was pretty nasty, angry, and spent a lot of time drinking. The only one who seemed to like her was the cat. Not much has changed. I'll give the next book a read to see if I find her more likable.
This cozy mystery is very different. Something went wrong and when Elloise died she showed up in the Divine Place, the afterlife for forgotten gods and magical creatures. When she arrived, she fell out of the sky and landed on Zeus. Word traveled fast that there was a human in the Divine Place and that Zeus was dead. Now it is up to Elloise to find the killer or she will be obliterated forever.
In the annals of fantasy there are lots of thoughts about what happens to gods and other paranormals when they lose their believers. This book posits a halfway place where they continue existence with one another. It's about what happens when one of them, Zeus, is killed. A dead mortal appears from the sky and lands on the body. Investigation and humor ensues. The dead mortal is our heroine and the unraveling of the mysteries is the reader's delight.
Murder and Mahjong( https://www.jeu-mahjong.fr/ ) is a fun and quirky start to the Divine Place series. Annabel Chase mixes supernatural mystery with humor, bringing gods, witches, and even Zeus into an afterlife setting full of surprises. Eloise is a relatable heroine, and the touch of mahjong in the title adds a playful twist that makes the story stand out. A light but engaging read for fans of cozy mysteries with a paranormal edge.
Interesting twist on the afterlife. Eloise died and went to the Divine Place which is supposed to be for the supernatural as a retirement village so she definitely gets an quick education into the supernatural beings. She fell in Zeus when she was dropped, but he was already dead. Now she is appointed the task of finding the killer. Interested in reading more of this series to see what predicament Eloise gets herself into.
This was such a fun to read mystery! So much to love on this beginning of a new series! From Eloise waking up dead in a hot dog suit, to her unfortunate meeting with Zeus and Hera, to being appointed Marshall with a demigod deputy solving a murder, it was fast paced and a lot of fun to read. I especially loved the golf carts and descriptions and my heart swelled when Mischief appeared. This looks like it is going to be a fantastic series!
Bit slow to start and it took me a while to get into this book. Different slant on characters from the classics, with the usual cosy magical mystery stalwarts of witches, werewolves and vampires. Dropping a 'human' into this environment offers story opportunities and book gave me a quick, light read.
A funny and entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series
A funny and entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. A great cast of characters and a funny story line. A human woman ends up in supernatural purgatory. The only human in a place where supernaturals end it when they are not bad but yet not good. Very entertaining check it out
I love Annabel Chase and all of her work, but this story took a while for me to get into. Thankfully, it was worth the effort. Devine Place is quirky and fun. The supernaturals there are interesting and adding a human to the mix is hilarious! As for Eloise, she' a hot mess and I loved her! Looking forward to the next book.
Instead of coming across as sassy and spirited the main character comes across as nasty, rude and unfortunately somewhat stupid. I was incredibly disappointed as I usually love works by this author, if you, like me, enjoy her other books be warned, this one I couldn't even bring myself to finish.
Honestly....I can't finish this book it's that bad and I've never done that before. I love the author's other books but this new series is terrible. No chemistry with the characters, snark is very negative rather than endearing, feels rushed, and kinda feels like a knock off of other books I've read but worse. Sorry but I wish it was better...
Eloise blunders into an afterlife for forgotten gods. And they want to blame Zues death on her but decide to make her the marshal instead. She has no skills and she's not sure she won't be obliterated. Instead she solves the mystery and someone else gets obliterated. Want to read about how all this gets wired together? This is a great tale with a few twists.
This story was quite challenging to read at first. It was a slow start and hard to relate to the characters but once the cat showed up, it was like the book jumped into action. I really had to push through the first 2/3 of the story but am glad I stuck it out.
I could not tear myself away from reading this book. Annabel Chase is an amazing tale spinner. She has an easygoing style of writing that encourages you to keep exploring. The Supernatural genre stimulates your interest in finding out what is coming. I hope that there will be more than 3 books in this series.
Really enjoyed this story. The MC had a real attitude and a some interesting interpersonal history, which might explain ending up in supernatural purgatory. The surrounding characters are many and varied and quite entertaining. I'm hoping that the entertainment can last through a few more books in the series.
