Aranyos ismeretterjesztő kötet híres macskákról, macskás babonákról, tényekről gyerekeknek, és cuki gyűjtemény, egydélutános lapozó macskamániás felnőtteknek is. Tobzódni lehet a szép és sokféle illusztrációban, de maga a tartalom néha kicsit kevés. Bár meg kell hagyni, a fordító nagyon igyekezett magyar vonatkozásokkal (is) telerakni a megfelelő helyeken a könyvet (pl. említi Szerénkét és Lukréciát a Frakkból), mégis sokszor hiányosnak, vagy nagyon amerikanizáltnak, üresen csengőnek éreztem az "információkat".
Ami nagyon szúrta a szememet, az a "gyömbérszínű" macska, ami több ízben is szerepel a kötetben. -.- Ginger... vagyis vörös (!!!) macska, magyarul. :/

This is one of the more creative variations on the "Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls" format/genre - all about cats! Real life exploits of smart/brave/loyal/cute and clever cats are interspersed with factoids about cat behaviour and biology, and cats in myths, folklore and literature. Similar to the Rebel Girls format, the feline portraits showcase the work of a range of (mostly female) illustrators.
There is a Further Reading section which is an excellent lead to more in-depth and advanced reading (something I felt was sadly missing from the Rebel Girls books).
With short, easy to read sections; mix of fact and fiction; colourful with interesting illustrations; cute animals; humour and weird facts, Rebel Cats ticks all the boxes for a Middle-grade crowd.

Jonas: ik vond het heel leuk. Het ging over allemaal katten. Ik heb dus zelfs geleerd dat er een kat naar de ruimte werd gestuurd. En over Nora de catcert kat; zij kan heel goed pianospelen, dat vond ik heel bijzonder. En over Bob de straatkat; hij heeft een nieuw baasje gevonden. En dat hij niet zo heel erg agressief was, want dat zijn katers meestal.
En er staan hele leuke feitjes in over katten.

Két cica, Borisz és Kátya gazdijaként imádok más macskákról is olvasni, azonban csak úgy, ha tudom, hogy a történetben szereplő állat nem sérül meg. A Menő macskák ebből a szempontból tökéletes olvasmány, ugyanis egyik cica sem sérül meg halálosan. Sőt mi több, igazi léleksímogató olvasmányok gyűjteménye a kötet bátor, kedves, hősies, ragaszkodó macskákról, akik valamilyen formában segítettek az embereknek.
És ha kicsit távolabbról nézem a történeteket, akkor az is remekül körvonalazódik bennük, hogy a macskák esetleges negatív megítélése is fals, hiszen még ha öntörvényűek is, mégis nagyon tudnak szeretni, és ragaszkodni a gazdájukhoz – akár extrém körülmények ellenére is. A Menő macskák megmutatja, hogy a történelem során mennyire félreértett jószágok voltak a macskák. Ha pedig csak a történeteket szeretnénk élvezni, nos, arra is remek választás a Menő macskák cicás történetei.
Kiknek ajánlom? Macskarajongó felnőtteknek, és kisebbeknek is remek olvasmány lehet. A nagyoknak aranyos olvasmány, mely visszarepíthet a gyermekkorba. Kicsiknek pedig a kötet formátumából adódóan remek lehetőség akár az olvasás önálló gyakorlására, akár esti mesének, felolvasásra is. Egyszóval ha szereted a macskákat, akkor a Menő macskák neked szól.

It's an adorable book, full of stories of cats, who were or are famous in some way. Some of the stories are quite crazy - like the ones with cats, who traveled the world on the ships or planes, often by an accident. Other cats are brave and fight not only for themselves but also for their humans. I already knew that cats are our overlords, but I didn't know so many rulers actually loved cats. Others were afraid of them, though. I must also add that I'm lucky enough to meet one of the cats mentioned in the book - Doorkins from the Southwark Cathedral in London. She was amazing - queen of the cathedral. And so soft :)
Illustrations are also lovely, so big plus for that.

What a cute read for the cat lovers out there!
I loved the stories about these special cats, but I would like to change the facts and tips in between the cat portraits for real photographs of the kitties and for more details about their stories! I had the desire to google every single one of the cats to see pictures of them (my google search history looks totally insane haha)!!

On Unejutud mässumeelsetele tüdrukutele ja on Lood poistest, kes julgesid erineda. Ja kui see ei tundu piisavalt võrdõiguslik, siis ka neile on midagi! Lood mässumeelsetest kassidest 😍.
Ma pole ammu ühtegi raamatut lugedes NII PALJU NUTNUD. Ja ma olen viimasel ajal väga palju Colleen Hooverit lugenud... Aga need lood olid nii armsad, kassid nii imelised ja inimesed... nemad vahel nii pahad. Soovitan seda väga kõigile kassiarmastajatele vahet pole kui suur või väike või kui noor või vana. Need imetoredad lood aitavad kõigil meenutada, mis on elus oluline ja kui vinge on see, et maailmas on nii võrd palju kihvte elusolendeid kelle kohta veel nii palju õppida on!

Featuring information about the ancient Egyptian god Bastet, the first cat to make it into space and back to earth safely, the first cat to be buried with their human owner and silly superstitions about felines. This book also gives information about famous street cats, such as Bob, who had a movie made about him and Doorkins, a once homeless cat, who was taken in by the vergers at Southwark Cathedral and has lived there now for more than 10 years and recently has had a corbel made of her, which will make her a permanent part of the cathedral's history.
Beautifully illustrated with various illustration styles, this book is suitable for all ages to enjoy and provides insightful information.

What an adorable collection of both stories about real cats doing extraordinary things as well as facts about the little cute creatures that we love so dearly! This was such a fun, sweet and delightful read.

Trošku mi tam jako dospělákovi chyběla ta konečná tečka za příběhem jednotlivých koček. Jak to s nimi nakonec dopadlo, protože i to k tomu patří.

Książka z tej serii o psach była super, ale jestem kociarą, więc w tym momencie z człowieka przekształciłam się w rozpuszczoną papkę i razem z moimi kocimi dziećmi dziękujemy wydawnictwu Znak Emotikon, że powstała nareszcie tego typu pozycja o mruczkach i że mogłam się z nią zapoznać!
BO SŁUCHAJCIE TEGO!
Faith podczas bombardowania Londynu uratowała swoje kociątko w typowy dla kocich wróżbitów sposób.
Dla Nory skomponowany został koncert fortepianowy (a jej umiejętności możecie podejrzeć na YT po wpisaniu „practice makes purrfect").
Felicette została pierwszym kocim astronautą.
Pyro był maskotką Królewskich Sił Powietrznych w Szkocji i przynosił pilotom szczęście.
Koty były burmistrzami, były czczone niczym bogowie, podróżowały i ratowały ludzi oraz swoje młode. A Kimberlie Hamilton w jednym miejscu zebrała sporo przykładów cudownych mruczków, o których warto pamiętać!
W książeczce znajdziemy kilka kocich przesądów, sygnały miłości czy garść faktów. Autorka podaje nam przykłady innych dzieł kultury oraz wspomina o wierzeniach, gdzie koty mają swoje należne im miejsce — „koty były niegdyś czczone jako bóstwa (I NIGDY O TYM NIE ZAPOMNIAŁY)". Oczywiście nie zapomina o kotach, które dokonały czegoś podobnego, jak szczegółowo opisane mruczki, daje nam koci quiz, poleca miejsce dla fanów tych zwierząt i... Ach! Okej. Próbuję oddychać.
Tym razem również siedemnastu autorów pracowało nad ilustracjami, dzięki czemu możemy podziwiać kociaki w przeróżnych stylach. Całość jest uroczą lekturą dla dużych i małych, a ja nie mogę przestać książki przytulać i piszczeć, że KOTY SĄ TAK SUPER. Jako ich wierny niewolnik i prawdziwa kocia mamuńcia (to już nie jest wymiar kociary, zaufajcie mi) jestem ZACHWYCONA.
Ale tytuł ten polecam nie tylko dlatego, że jest o kotach. Całość została po prostu dobrze zrobiona. I pod względem wizualnym, i pod względem treści.
Psst, kotów można nie lubić, ale to nie sprawi, że przestaną być nadzwierzętami, więc lepiej po prostu się poddać i je kochać, serio.
Psst dwa, czuć, że autorka ma koty. Ta część ma w sobie więcej humoru i więcej miłości.

When I saw this in an op shop in the Blue Mountains, I knew I had to have it. It's a very cute compilation of stories and illustrations of famous cats throughout history. I'd dispute the use of the word "rebel" and "feisty" to describe these cats though as most of them were either just being their capricious selves or they were pressed into service by humans who were basically exploiting them, whether for mousing or money. It also irked me that there were two pretty glaring mistakes in here: a reference to Nazis on a story about Pitoutchi, who tricked Germans soldiers in World War I, and Prince Edward Island being referred to as in the USA (at the bottom of the page on Snowball). There were also a few too many American cats detailed when the more interesting stories were Tama the stationmaster from Japan, for example. The book is pitched at younger readers (I'm a young, cat-loving 42-year-old!) but there are also quite a few stories that are pretty sad (mentions of injury) so reader caution is advised. Still, it was an enjoyable read to round out the year and reminds me again that I must go to Japan! And Kuching ("cat city"), Malaysia!

What a marvellous, heart-warming and wonderfully educational book this is! It is an eclectic collection of real-life stories of the antics of various cats and their owners across the world, spanning throughout history.
Inside this colourful, non-fiction book there are lots of feline facts, but also amazing stories of bravery, survival and honour achieved by cats who lived their full nine lives. There are cats who helped in the war effort, cats who solved crimes, cats who saved people from dying, and cats who helped invent electricity!
Kimberlie Hamilton has done a brilliant job writing an upbeat, accessible book for children you and old, that is made all the more entertaining by its stunning cat-ish illustrations.

Now what a cute little facts-book this was!!!
To no one's surprise I LOVE cats! I've grown up with cats much of my life and I can't imagine life without a cat.
And gladly, throughout history, I'm not the only one.
In this facts-book there's stories about real cats that have made a difference or are extraordinary in one way or another. Fascinating stories for sure!!!
Of course, it's a facts-book for kids, so the facts and stories about each cat are not very long, but they're still very interesting.
I really do recommend this book. Both if you, like me, LOVE cats! Or if you just like fascinating stories about pets making a difference!
