I actually dislike books that have mis-communication or lack of communication as a main plot. This one unfortunately is one of them. It wasn´t all bad it was just annoying at times.

I didn’t see this story coming. Luca has lost everything but is determined to get a glimpse of what he could have. Avery is the girl who is struggling to function. Her daily planner marks down every activity from morning to night. She doesn’t have time for Luca, but if she wants to save her dads job some of her day has got to give.

The love playbook is a romance with a difference. Both characters are broken but the fix is anything but straightforward. This is a story of moving on. Changing to make a difference and love when all you want to do is shut the world out.

Luca isn’t the typical transfer kid. He only has his mum and times are hard. For him to move forward with his life he has to work through his past.

Avery and Luca need a distraction. They need something more than their usual world.

This is well written and both characters are interesting. I liked the twists to this tale. It isn’t the usual guy needs help with football book.

4 stars out of 5.

Avery's family was still recovering from her mother's sudden death, when she learned her father's job was on the line. She wasn't sure how to guarantee his football team made the playoffs, but she knew they had a better chance with Lucas on the team.

Lucas was just trying to lie low after being run out of his last school. He shouldn't have been playing ball, but he just needed that small part of himself to help ease the pain of all he lost. He just never expected someone like Avery would waltz into his life, and push him back into the limelight.

My love for football books is no secret, and this one hit me with a one-two-punch, while also filling me up with a good dose of feel-good, which I expect from sports themed books.

Both Lucas and Avery were trying to recover from some very big losses. Avery was still reeling from her mother's death, and trying to cope in her own way, by trying to plan and control as many things as possible. While, Lucas essentially lost everything, and was forced to start a new - no team, no friends, no future. Both of their situations were heartbreaking, even if they were very different kinds of losses, and it was a gift that they found each other to help assuage the pain.

It brought me so much joy to see Lucas rebuilding his life, and this small town really welcomed him with open arms. At first you would think it was all about his ability to run and catch the ball, but later in the story, when everything starts to fall apart, that's when you find out who your friends are. And, wow! That last bit of the book was what I come to sports romances for. It made me want to stand up and cheer, and left me in a state of utter happiness.

On top of all of this, I also got a great romance. It might have seemed a little insta-lovey, but I was a fan of this pairing. Avery "saw" Lucas after he had hit rock bottom, when everyone else had abandoned him. She offered him a helping hand, when he felt isolated and alone, and I can understand him falling for the girl. Regardless of what drove their union, I liked seeing this love grow and flourish. It was sweet and gooey, and there was even a small-scale grand gesture, which made my happy tears flow, and reminded me that even small gestures can be quite grand.

Overall: A touching story about the power of love, family, and friendship, when it comes to recovering from great losses.

Young Adult, Contemporary Romance, Sports

Third Person, dual-POV

This is a standalone book with HEA.

He'd lost his place at college, lost all his football ability, lost his ability to speak to girls, lost his car-okay, just its wheels, but still-lost his home, lost his friends, lost his iPhone, lost his MacBook Pro, and his mom had lost her job.

by Lucas

Addictiveness: 5/5  This was an easy read with lovable characters and a plot that kept me interested until the end. It was a cute, fun read. As addictive as chocolate!!!

Character: hero 4/5, heroine 4/5, secondary characters 3/5, growth 4/5, real 4/5 Great characters with painful past. I just wished we had learn more about them.

Lucas was a good hero. He was not perfect, he had make mistakes, but not really the mistake he believed he had fail at. His biggest mistake was at 14 years old trusting adults and their intentions. If I was to fault someone, which I didn't, it would have been his mother, never Lucas. The fact that he took upon himself to carry the weight of that burden said a lot about his true self. Yes, he was being selfish and risking a lot, but he was just a kid wanting to play a sport that he always believed was his future. He was a sweet kid, very polite, well behaved, respect women and elders, loved his mom and was a great boyfriend.

Avery was a great heroine. She has had a tough year and was worried about her family. When she overheard people talking about her dad, she impulsively decided to fixed it herself. She was a girl with lots of knowledge of football, specially of how to coach football. That was refreshing!!! She was an exceptional daughter, a wonderful sister, a superb best friend and a very sweet girlfriend. She was afraid of the past and her way of feeling control over her life was trying to plan every step of her future. I loved her strength, but I've specially loved her weaknesses . It showed so much of her true, gentle, loving personality.

I know this is a standalone, but I can see a book for Lexi and Colin in the future. At least I hope they get their own book. Besides them, I liked the twin's dad and LeVonn.

Villains.. antagonists… I don't really think we had them here. Really a whole town, institution had done Lucas wrong and life had done Avery's wrong. Them, they were just teen discovering life and their path in it.

All characters were easy to love, connect and understand!!!

Cover: art 4.5/5, title 5/5, color-font 5/5, buy 5/5  I’m obsessed with book covers. I love to find snippets of the stories within the art. I really liked this cover. We can see that it was made for this story. We can see Avery and Lucas in a football field. The title is cute and fits, the subtitle is wonderful, it works so well. The colors and font are ok, but something didn't work for me, maybe it was too big. I would buy this book by its cover without needing to read the blurb!!!

Freshness: 4/5 This was a YA contemporary romance and it had all the cute cliches that it usually has, but somehow, it felt fresh. The fact that a football player needed help from a girl it was cool and unusual. Also how it ended was unexpected and perfect. As fresh as ice mint tea!

Plot: believable 4/5, conflict 4/5, dialogue 5/5, ending 5/5, enjoyment 5/5, opening 4/5, pace 5/5, setting 5/5, subplots 4/5, twists 5/5  Good opening and wonderful ending. Believable plot, with cute dialogues and satisfying pace. Superb setting, interesting subplots with exceptional twists.  High level of enjoyment!

Romance: believable 5/5, chemistry 5/5, description 4/5, development 4/5, steam 1/5  Lucas was coming out of a hard lesson and was fighting depression and trying to get his life on track. He found in Avery the caring and unjudgmental attention that he craved and needed. They had both been broken by life and were lost, trying to get out of the dark tunnel. They became each other's light and strength to keep going. Their love come out of angst and doubts but it beautifully bloomed and became strong. There is no smut here, being totally appropriate for young adults. Cute love!!!

Writing Style: 4.5/5 Cute characters, interesting plot, enchanting romance in a clean, cohesive writing with perfect pace.  Good writing!!!

I guess I wanted to know more about the characters. They were cute, nice, but I wished I had known them better. I wanted them to have more depth. Specially Lucas, he was sort of a mystery. We only really saw him interesting with Avery and her friends. I wanted to know him better.

This was a cute, sweet romance with a dash of angst and teenager problems.

I love small town romances and the small community friendship. I've truly enjoyed how the entire town stepped up for Lucas and I hope to read more of them.

I would love to read Colin and Lexi's book; also to have one for LeVonn.

A sweet love story that was perfect in its simplicity!!!

29.5/35 STARS –  4 STARS (between 28 stars and 31 stars)

Addictiveness: 5 Character: 4 Cover: 4.5 Freshness: 4 Plot: 4 Romance: 4 Writing Style: 4

Action 2/5 Angst 4/5 Darkness 0/5 Humor 2/5 Romance 5/5 Suspense/Mystery 0/5

Would I recommend? Definitely! For everybody that wants cute sports romance.

Would I re-read this book/series? Sure.

Would I read more from the author? Yes, I will be on the look out for more.

You MAY read this because you follow the author; you SHOULD read this because you like cute sports romance; you MUST read this because the love story is enchanting!!!

Oh, this is sad. It’s been a while since I DNFed a book so early. I wasn’t feeling it to start off with. Nothing jumped out at me in the first chapter. Already I didn’t like either of the MCs. Then I had a theory, read some reviews, and the theory was proven correct. I skimmed the little bit of chapter 2 that I did read.

Nothing and I mean nothing popped out at me when I skimmed. If anything it made me want to skip to the end just to know how everything turned out. Instead, I have decided this book isn’t for me. I am going to put it back and part ways. It will be easier than trying to force myself through a book that I know I will give a low rating.

My Thoughts:

The Love Playbook was a sweet and fun read! Lucas has transferred to Hillside High School. Football is his passion, but after he got caught taking expensive gifts from a university, he is banned from ever playing again. He decides to fly under the radar by playing for a small town football team where he won't get noticed. However, all of a sudden, he can't seem to catch the ball!

Avery, the coache's daughter, agrees to help Lucas improve his game. She overheard a secret conversation that if the team doesn't make it to playoffs, her father will most likely lose his job. Football is important to Avery's family, and after losing her mother to Cancer last year, she doesn't want them to lose anything more.

Both Lucas and Avery are struggling emotionally, and are going through very difficult times in their lives. As they spend time together, they find a friend and ally in one another, but will their secrets catch up to them, and tear apart the relationship they've built?

I enjoyed reading about the struggles, friendship, and love of Lucas and Avery. Both of them went through huge challenges, and were able to grow and mature from their experiences. I loved the way they were always there for one another, supporting, encouraging, and guiding. The Love Playbook was a fast-paced, light, sweet, fun, and feel good romance! I enjoyed Lucas and Avery's story, and look forward to reading more books by Suze Winegardner!

Received a copy in exchange for a fair review thank you to Chapter Books. I really loved this book, it has been a while since I have last read anything. I always find something interesting to read but I don't have the time to read, I am hoping that changes next year. I am currently in final year so this was a nice break from it to read the book.

I loved both Avery and Lucas, I found myself constantly wanting to mother them (which is new for me) especially Avery I can't imagine losing a parent like that. But the chemistry between them sure set the pages on fire.

This book was sooo good that I ended up reading this in one sitting, although my back is complaining I couldn't imagine a better way to lose sleep on #bookwormproblems. I know the plot of the story line is not unique, I have a read a handful of novels now with sport being the main emphasis. I did find Lucas's dilemma quite unique though, and I am glad he got the happing ending he deserved.

Without giving it too much away, I enjoyed the story line, the characters and Avery's simple way of trying to solve problems and cope with pain is something we can all relate to. If you enjoy athlete contemporary novels and are looking for something to relax with then be sure to give this a try.

I've just finished this sweet book. Lucas and Avery will melt your heart❤️❤️.
After being on the spotlight for an scandal, Lucas and his mom move to a small town.
And there, he meets Avery, the football coach's daughter.
Both of them have secrets. And the more they keep them, the more their dreams are in danger.
It's a story very easy to read.

The Love Playbook by Suze Winegardner a four-star read that you will be desperate to read. This could have been five-stars, I just felt that it took so long to go anywhere. Lucas broke my heart, he has such a strong story, one that will stay with me, he deserves his happily ever after, but you will have to read it to see if he gets one. Avery was good, she has that special something and the flashcards, they deserve a special mention. I will definitely be looking for this author again as the writing was great overall.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion and review. I LOVED this book. I’m a sucker for a football love story. I can’t tell you why but it’s true. I loved Avery’s character and how strong of a person she is. Lucas was perfect, I loved how he cared about Lexi when she had had too much to drink. It’s really important to me that he felt that way. This is a perfect feel-good story.

This review is going to be short and (probably not) sweet as I didn’t like The Love Playbook by Suze Winegardner and won’t belabor the point.

It’s very rare that I don’t enjoy an Entangled Crush novel. While they might not have the depth of Sarah Dessen YA novels, they can be relied on to entertain. Sometimes that’s all you want and need.

I'm sorry, but I just didn't love it. So much of it felt forced, and the main characters were kind of idiots. Yes, both Avery and Lucas went through some hard things (her mother passed away a year before, and he was banned from football because a university overstepped what was appropriate). But each of them made some really selfish decisions. And I find it really hard to believe that what happened with Lucas would cause his mother to lose his job and force the two fo them to leave town and assume new identities. Honestly.

I struggled with the romantic elements of the book, as well. It's not that Avery and Lucas didn't work well together (lying aside). But their relationship moved way too quickly. I don't have anything against people that fall in love quickly (after a week of dating, my husband and I dropped the L word). What I do take issue with is that their physical relationship moved at lightning speed. The first time they really kissed, Lucas groped Avery. I really didn't need to know every time his nether regions physically reacted to her. They had hardly been dating before they were close to having sex. Not okay.

On the positive side, the book contained several good supporting characters. Lexi and LaVonn were both excellent friends. Avery's father was a good coach and good father.

How it ends:

Note: Swearing, including so many f words I quickly lost count. Lying. Teenagers doing stupid things in a romantic relationship.

A classic YA football romance - and one that didn’t disappoint! One character fleeing from his past and another working to move forwards from her own past. When we meet both of the protagonists - Lucas and Avery - you know that you’re going to love them and you know that you want them to just be happy for gosh sakes. They each have a bit of ‘trauma’ in their pasts which affects them and their own actions.

Characters:
Avery, as far as lead heroines - was really fantastic to follow. She was strong and admirable, even with all of the things that had happened in her life. As for Lucas? You really just wanted to give him a big hug. He had been through some stuff that definitely wasn’t his fault and was a fantastic match for Avery. I genuinely loved him - he was so kind and caring.

Storyline and Plotting:
It was okay and provided enough explanations for some of the quirks that each of them presented as well as a fairly satisfying storyline. Was it anything that was particularly out of the ordinary, or somehow revolutionary? No, I wouldn’t say that. But - it worked. The writing was smooth and fluid, even though there were moments where I felt it was a bit too melodramatic.

Overall - a really chilled novel with cute characters and a great story that is perfect as a read on a cosy afternoon

N.B: I was very kindly sent an ARC of this novel by the publisher and the author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

I normally enjoy Entangled Crush novels very much, but somehow I was just not able to connect to this one at all.

The two main characters, Avery and Lucas both come with major issues.
Avery lost her mother and is scared that her dad will lose his job as coach at the high school.
Lucas is banned from playing high school football and is just as scared as Avery. He is just scared it will be found out, since he plays despite the ban.

Honestly, I just didn't like either of the two characters. Sorry, it was just not a book for me.

First time reader of Winegardner and I really enjoyed it. Easy to read and I’m a big sucker for books that have football in them.

Avery is a big planner. She has to have every moment planned out as a way to recover from her mother’s death. Leaving no room for any unexpected plans. But then she learns that her fathers job is in jeopardy. Willing to do whatever it takes to save her fathers job she enlists the help of a certain someone.

Lucas is the new transfer at the school. Having only his mom he is willing to do anything to help her. Yet he’s there under a fake name & a big secret. But all he wants to do is start fresh and possibly play some football. Will he be able to? Or will the truth come out?

Can these two work together? Would it be enough to save Averys dad’s job?

Both of them dealing with issues and losses. These two will have you rooting for them. Yet the chemistry between them is just blazing.

This is a normal high school romance but with a bit of depression and family problems mixed in. Both of the main characters have had trauma they have to overcome and maybe together they can do just that.
The book is Dual POV and switches between chapters and sometimes in a break in the middle. It was a tad jarring to start but you do get use to it.
Overall it was a decent read with romance and overcoming our own past to head into the future.

I have to say I honestly really enjoyed this book.
The whole storyline totally drew me in.
Avery and Lucas were really relatable characters who were going through a lot and helped each other.
The romance was amazing and at the start it felt very insta lovey but it grew and developed beautifully.
The writing was witty and hilarious at times I really enjoyed it.
Overall an amazing book that shows the power of family love and friendship.

It was just meh.

My biggest issue with the story was Lucas' situation. If he really was as amazing as stated, everyone would know when he left and would probably be able to find him. His old high school coaches would want to know where he went to ensure that he did not go to an opposing team. His new high school coaches would have to apply for a transfer and they would have to state where he came from. And the college coaches and scouts would be keeping a look out for him. Even his teammates and the football fanatics would probably know about the amazing athletes.

I also thought the whole "using Lucas to save Coach's job" was a little far fetched. I don't really see why Avery felt that she needed to lie to Lucas. Or even why Lucas felt betrayed. Does it really matter why she helped? All that should matter was that he got to play game he loved.

I didn't love the writing style. It was basically written in a dual POV, but in third person. I think it would have been easier to read and therefore more enjoyable if it was written in first person dual POV. I just thought it was very wordy and I just couldn't get invested in it.

Lexi, Colin and LeVonn. What was up with them?! I was honestly more invested in their relationship. We knew Lexi's feelings and could infer what the boys thought, but we never got a resolution of their relationship. WHAT HAPPENED!?

It was a fine book. A quick read, just not a whole lot there.

The Love Playbook was a good book, but unfortunately it was not great and nor did it stand out from any other book. The character building was great and they were realistic, however there was no chemistry between Lucas and Avery. It just felt bland, and a bit too sudden. One minute they were just friends that were attracted to each other but haven’t come to accept it and the other they were making out. This just didn’t make sense for me. Another thing that bothered me was the planners and all of Avery’s planning for every single minute. I get that she went through trauma and all after her mother had died (this happens before the story begins) but it doesn’t link each other together. Also find it a tad bit unbelievable that Lucas Westman/ Lucas Black would get banned from playing football because of something he didn’t know. That is very unrealistic. Thankfully, this book isn’t horrible, and was worth my time (and yours) because Lucas Westman and Lexi (Avery’s BBF) made it worth it. There was the occasional humor and the nice friendship between Lexi and Avery. Lucas was a very respectable character and wasn’t a douchebag (you’d be surprised by how many douchebags there are in books). While the situations where not uber realistic, they were rather unique and original which I liked. Overall, this book is good but not amazing, therefore deserves 3.5 stars.

This is an unabashedly romantic high school football story. Lucas and Avery trade-off points of view through the story which I've decided I really enjoy. It allows me to see how they are both feeling, beyond "just the facts ma'am". LOL

Avery is a real sweetheart, wanting to both help her Dad and Lucas. Lucas has a bad news bears background but with her love and kindness, I kept hoping it would make a big difference in his life going forward.

Loads of angst and drama but some of that comes from living in a small town (I know these things. I live in one.😁) So you know how I said it was unabashedly a teenage football romance? It is but boy oh boy does it have more story than meets the eye. I thoroughly enjoyed it for that very reason. You are hard-pressed to outguess exactly what will happen next and that keeps it exciting. So if you love books like that, teen romances with hot guys and clever, kind and loving girls, then you're gonna want to be a-l-l over this!

5❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This is the story of Avery and Lucas. They’re the same yet different. Both are struggling with their own problems but have to come together to try and solve a very big problem.

Avery is still struggling with the death of her month a year after it happened with the help of her brother and her father who happens to be the football coach at the local high school. The only way she can cope is with the help of her daily planner that has her every move written down from when she wakes up and until she goes to sleep. She has no room for anything else in her life and that includes Lucas but when she accidentally learns that her father might get fired from coaching the football team if they don’t succeed this year, she has no choice but to ask for help from Lucas.

Lucas is the new transfer student. With only his mom in the picture to support him, times are tough and he does all he can to help her out whenever he can. All he wants is a fresh start and to play football. It’s not as easy as it seems. With lies and drama this story has you guessing what will come next for Avery and Lucas.

Although I feel like I am too old to read a semi high school romance with added drama, I did enjoy this book and the switch between characters.

Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Teen for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was technically my first sports romance and while I didn’t fully know what to expect, I really enjoyed it and definitely want to read more of them.

That being said, this was definitely more than just a sports romance. It was a story about second chances and forgiveness. The ultimate outcome wasn’t about football or scholarships but accepting what has been and learning to move on and heal (for both of them).

I also loved the supporting characters and their friendships. They were sort of the comic relief to the heaviness between Lucas and Avery and it added a nice lightness to it.

The romance itself was a bit insta-lovey and definitely high-school, but still cute. I was interested the whole time and despite a few technicalities and issues, it was still unputdownable.

If you’re looking for a short, sweet YA sports romance with a bigger message, then you have found your book.

A little bit of love with some angst!

Lucas Black and his mom had moved to Hillside to start over where nobody knew who he was when the college that had been giving him money on the side while he was high school was caught and given a large fine. Avery Stone needed to help Lucas improve his game so the team would make the playoff and save her dad’s job so they wouldn’t have to move. Avery was still trying to deal with the sudden death of her mom by planning almost every second of the day and she had to come out of her shell to help Lucas.

The Love Playbook has some teenage angst but Avery needs Lucas because he brings her out of her shell and Lucas needs Avery because she can help him be the person hewants to be after all that had happened to each of them.

I really need to start taking notes when I read ARC books, but I am so focused on enjoying the books and getting into it and I just don’t think about it. Anyway, The Love Playbook was a short, sweet read.

It was fast paced and I really liked all of the characters in it and how everybody seemed to look out for each other in the small town. I liked Avery’s twin, Colin. I liked how loyal they were to each other. I wasn’t a fan of all of the secrets Lucas was keeping from everybody, but I liked how that plotline ended up. This book was slow at some parts, but it picked up more towards the middle.

I really liked the tension with one particular dangerous scene.

The Love Playbook was a four star rating based on the characters and how the plotline improved towards the middle and end of the book. Thank you Netgalley and publishers for giving me the chance to read and review this book. This had no impact on my thoughts. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
