The Stand-In Boyfriend

Rate this book
Sometimes the person you're meant to be with is standing right in front of you.

Parker Reed has been in love with Beth Bennett since he was four years old. She grew up next door to him, holding his hand and now his heart. The problem is, Beth has no idea Parker is in love with her. He’s stuck in the friend zone, forced to stand by while Beth dates a parade of losers. But with their senior year of high school winding down, Parker finds himself wondering how much longer he can hide his feelings for Beth.

Beth Bennett’s life is perfect. She’s convinced she has it all—the world’s best friend and the world’s best boyfriend. Now if only she could get the two to get along. With her spring break trip to Aspen just around the corner, Beth feels the pressure to spend time with both the guys in her life. But as usual, her older sister throws a wrench into Beth’s plans by hijacking her perfect spring break with a shotgun wedding.

As Beth scrambles to balance being a girlfriend, best friend and sister, her perfectly planned life spirals out of control. As always Parker is there to catch her. And when Beth’s boyfriend decides he’d rather go skiing than be her wedding date, Parker steps in to take his place. He decides the wedding is his big chance to tell Beth how he feels. What does he have to lose . . . besides the girl of his dreams?

Who will Beth choose? Her boyfriend, or the boy who’s never let her down?

This book does what it’s supposed to really well. It’s a YA contemporary that’s follows a girl and a boy who’ve been best friends forever and don’t tell the other they secretly love each other. Sure it’s a very common trope, but the tropes in the book are done very well. I hated two of the characters so much, but I’m pretty sure I was supposed to so well done. As long as you go in knowing what the book is and don’t expect it to be some revolutionary, new thing I think you’ll really enjoy it. It’s well written and I loved the character of Parker.

I was given a copy of this awhile ago. However, I got bad with putting it off but I have finally read it. I did enjoy this. Although, I'm not surprised I've enjoyed this series so far. I felt bad for Beth. Not many people in her life are trustworthy. Thankfully she has Parker. I was so happy that in the end everything came to light and they got what they deserved.

Not a bad story overall, but steal a car, drive to endanger and destroy a expensive automobile and no legal consequences?

This book felt much longer than 226 pages, not gonna lie.

It's very repetitive - 100% can confirm that Parker smells good.

Title: The Stand-In Boyfriend
Author: Christina Benjamin
Rating: 4.5/5 stars

I received a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This is a spoiler free review.

Summary:
Parker Reed and Beth Bennett have been friends, and neighbors, their entire life. They know almost everything about each other and enjoy spending time together, going to the movies, the beach, and each other’s homes… but they are just friends! However, Parker has a major crush on Beth… and she has no idea. When Jared moves in across the street, Parker has to balance remaining friends with Beth while dealing with her new relationship with Jared. Will Parker be able to support Beth in this new relationship or will Parker’s heart take over from his head, potentially ruining their friendship?

Review:
I have to admit, it has been way too long since I last read a romance novel. I don’t even remember what the last romance I read was. But this was what started my love of reading. I always looked for stories with romance in them. So, coming back to this genre was like greeting an old friend and it was refreshing. This story was a traditional high-school novel, which included classes, sports games, parties, and relationships. The story was so well written that I rarely felt like putting the book down. The beginning of the book was a bit slow, due to a large amount of inner dialogue from Parker about his love for Beth. This was necessary in setting up the characters however caused a slow start. However, I encourage readers to continue because it soon picked up and became a light, easy, and quick read.

The story is predictable in some ways and unexpected in others. It is a classic love story that has been done many times, however it adds twists and turns that keep the reader on edge. It also dives deeper into the life of a high-school student by dealing with college selection and the desire to appease parents.

There is an attention to detail in this book in regards to the characters, setting, and plot. The characters were all fully developed, with different character traits and behaviors that become expected of them. The setting and plot were well described and I was never unclear on the situation unfolding in the book. Parker and Beth have known each other for a long time and this shows in the story. Parker knows small stuff about Beth like the fact that only macarons from a specific bakery will cheer her up. Beth, who is interested in theatre, uses theatre terminology in her everyday life, which is incredibly detailed (and accurate… as a dancer, I do this all the time). This is the attention to detail that is characteristic of this novel. The description is also incredibly successful. I do not like the beach and this book made me want to go to the beach.

The character that shocked me the most was Jared. He is the typical jerk who gets in a relationship with Beth as a game. However his character develops much more depth than I was expecting and I believe this is why I appreciated the love triangle in this story more than I have in the past. I was surprised about how complex his character was. When one part of the triangle is a jerk, it is easy for the reader to pick a side and stay there. However, Jared had more depth than this and it left the reader on their toes, curious as to how he will turn out (even though I still think he is a jerk). The book is in multiple perspectives, so not only do we get a deep understanding of Beth and Parker as characters but we also get a glimpse into Jared’s mind and why he does the things that he does.

Words that I would use to describe this book:
Heart-warming
Cute
Classic
Charming

If's, maybe's, should've, could've-the words that have echoed through Parker Reed's mind from the day that P and B became P, B, and J. Parker has grown up next door to Beth Bennett. They are best friends. He's been in love with her most of his life but he's never had the nerve to tell her. He doesn't feel that he deserves her and he's afraid to ruin their perfect friendship. Beth feels the same way but she's too shy to show her feelings, always hoping that he will make the first move. Then Jared moves in across the street stealing Beth away. It's true that you never know how much you need and want someone until they're gone. Not that Beth is truly gone. Parker still sees her every day, he still goes with her to the classic movies they both love, he still goes to each of her musicals because these things are important to Beth and don't interest Jared. Parker's been relegated to the stand-in boyfriend. It hurts to see Beth dating another guy but he can handle it because her happiness is the most important thing in the world to him. Jared may not be worthy of Beth but he falls for her along the way. She matters to him more than any girl ever has but he's made mistakes. When it all starts to fall apart Beth has to make choices. Which boy owns her heart? What does love truly look like, will she recognize it when she finds it, has it been there all along or is it with the boy who stole her away?

I love this series. They touch me like no other series written today. Each one is so heartfelt and leaves me happier than I was before. Once again I was enchanted. This is a book of missed opportunities, regret, and mistakes. It's also a book of hope, sisterly love, friendship, and young love. It's a story that could occur in any high school across the country. Best friends fall in love all of the time but are too scared or shy to go after what they want. Boyfriends and girlfriends make (un)forgivable mistakes, lie, and hurt the other person in the relationship every day. They are not necessarily bad people. They are young, stupid, careless with another's heart. This doesn't make it okay or lessen the pain but it doesn't make them a horrible person either. They will likely get their heart broken one day too. It's part of life and love. This story of young love, first love, lasting love is written to perfection. It's a series of normal days that become extraordinary, precious childhood memories, perfect days in the present, and the hope of a lifetime of the same. This book was all about P, B, and J but the supporting characters deserve mention. Misguided Caroline... Normally, I would hate this girl, but instead, I actually pitied her. The Bennett Girls...I love them in every book they appear. The wedding preparations, hurricane Brenna, and the good-natured teasing were the perfect balance to the heavy emotions the teens were all facing.

As I've mentioned more than once, this series reaches me like no other. Each time I finish one of the Boyfriend books I'm afraid that it will be the last. I can't imagine that Christina Benjamin can continue to come up with ideas for and write these dear books forever. For right now I'm going to look for the rainbows and hope that she has at least one (5, 10, 20) more in mind for the future.

I have a new swoon-worthy book boyfriend and his name is Parker Reed. Christina Benjamin is making a habit out of creating amazing characters that I can't help but fall in love with. Parker is amazingly sweet and so is Beth, they deserved to be together!

Beth is the girl next door and her family took care of Parker and his Father when his Mother died suddenly. Beth and Parker had a crush on each other since they were kids, the problem was neither one knew. The kept it a secret from the other just in case the feelings weren't mutual. As Parker said 'he would rather have Beth as a friend than not at all'. Then Jared came in the picture and swept Beth off her feet. Can Parker prove to her that he isn't what he seems? Will he finally tell her how he really feels?

All I want to do is gush about how much I adored Parker and Beth, but mostly Parker. They were just so stinking cute! How could Beth ever even think to date anyone else when Parker was right next door? I mean, really? And to go for Jared of all people. Gross. Also while on the topic of terrible people can we talk about Caroline for a second? She was pretty terrible and I know in her own twisted way she was trying to help Beth but she went about it in the WRONG way! I'm not sure there was a worse way she could have gone about that. It must be nice to have that kind of money and power, though.

Honestly, I would also read a book about Beth's sister Brenna. She seemed awesome and like she has a story to tell too. Plus if it wasn't for her wedding Parker and Beth may still be just friends and pinning after each other in secret. I don't think I could have survived if I had that many sisters, though. One stealing my clothes was enough, thanks.

This is one of the best contemporary series' I've ever read! You can read them in any order because they are written as if they were stand alone's.

Pretty good read; had me not wanting to stop reading!

https://ladiikeiii.wordpress.com/2020...

***Spoilers; splash here and there***

This book was really good. I figure her best friend, Caroline, was trash and didn’t care about Beth. Even Parker didn’t like Caroline; he probably thought that something wasn’t right with her. He also didn’t like Jared for personal reasons, but he knew that Jared was trash.

I was glad when Beth figured out that both Caroline and Jared weren’t good people in her life. I mean Jared even showed proof of that after the accident that Beth was in.... he came to the hospital to talk smack to Parker, and stated how he was going to get Beth back. Like boy no, your garbage. I was like Beth woke up and heard everything that was said. And dismissed Jared from her life for good.

She even dismissed Caroline when Caroline blew her phone up with text messages. Beth figured things out when it came to Parker and his feelings and her own feelings. At first, she pushes him away, but after talking to her sister & then the accident where he saved her, she knew that Parker was meant for her. He may have been a “Stand-In” boyfriend, as everyone stated, but he was a perfect boyfriend for her.

I can honestly say that I wish I grew up with a stand that boyfriend in my younger days.
Honestly I don't know what poor Beth was thinking when she didn't know that the best person of her life was her best friend Parker Reed. Most of us females will do anything to have a Parker in our lives. But she let bad boy Jared get in her head and in her best friend who's a bad girl mess with her mind.
Even though she's saying that her boyfriend didn't reciprocate her feelings by attempting to do anything that she like to do she still couldn't see his faults are a better word for it she didn't want to see his faults. The best thing Jerry did for her was not go to her sister's wedding with her, is there going to ski With Friends and leave her what her with her best friend Parker and them finding that the love one another is the best thing that either one of them could have ever imagined.

I really enjoy reading this couple story imagining and watching their story blossoms throughout the pages and I must say that I loved it and I loved how her eyes opened in the end.

You always hear about the girl next door, well this story is about the boy next door. Parker's best friend is Beth Bennett his next door neighbor whom he's been in love with for as long as he can remember. He's just never been able to work up the nerve to tell her. His concern is that if he tells her it will ruin the perfect friendship they have & on some level he thinks he doesn't deserve her. Funny thing ... Beth also has feelings for Parker but much like him she's too shy to say anything. She's hoping that Parker will make the first move.
Now enter the new guy, Jared, who just moved across the street. He takes Beth's attention from Parker. But does he really? Is Parker ever going to be more than just the boy next door?

This book was very sweet and wonderful. It flows wonderfully and the characters are very well described.

If you have read any of the authors other books this is definitely one to read as well.

I don't know how I'm feeling about this series anymore..

The first couple books I loved and then I read the holiday boyfriend which you will recall me saying was good but not the best and I think this is my least favourite. I'm starting to think that if I read a YA highschool romance book then I need them to be like IN highschool dealing with school drama etc, I need a little more happening than just the romance (weird I know right) but with NA and adult romances there usually is more happening and that's what I love, so when it's YA I need that extra aspect.

Don't get me wrong this wasn't a bad book but I felt like up until the second half of the book I wasn't really interested and was just reading in hopes of getting somewhere.

Parker was great but I also think I'm just not really for the friends to lovers trope, maybe that's why it didn't interest me as much 🤔 hated Jared BTW... Yeah so I think I'm going to carry on trying with this series and hopefully I'll have better updates to come

I was around page 200 and I started thinking to myself "What could happen in these next hundred something pages?" This was the time when Parker and Beth finally told each other how they feel and Beth had broken up with Jared. So in my mind I started thinking about what could happen to make this book last a hundred more pages. This is what I came up with:
1. College discussion
2. Jared confrontation
3. Caroline confrontation
These are the three reasons I came up with. I was not excepting Beth to get into a car accident. I was pleasantly surprised when Beth heard all the stuff Jared said in her hospital room. The epilogue was one of my favorite parts of the book. It was the perfect ending.

An amazing childhood friends to lovers trope book!🥰 I want to read more books like this! Parker Reed is so sweet and I love everything about him 😩 I low key feel bad for Jared but he screwed himself over by keeping it a secret from Beth for so long. Maybe he would’ve had a chance (not that I wanted him to) if he told her sooner. I hope someday her and Caroline reconnect. As for now I can’t wait to continue on with this series! I like how the books connect in a way but you don’t have to have read the previous ones for them to make sense it’s just more fun if you have. But I recommend this book for anyone who likes the childhood best friends to lovers trope that’s at least 14+.

Sweet young love🥰🥰

Parker has been in love with Beth since forever. Beth feels the same but both are afraid to let the other know. Much to his dismay Beth eventually finds a boyfriend 💔. He’s heartbroken but doesn’t say anything even though he knows Jarred is a twisted playboy who will eventually hurt his Beth. He’s afraid to loose their friendship. Better friends than nothing right? Luckily Jarred lives to Parker’s horrid expectations and true love finds love. Beautiful tale of young love 💗

Very cute and sweet slow burn coming of age story. Written in alternating 3rd person POV.

Beth realizes her forever has been right next door all of her life after a little time away from her "perfect" boyfriend. Crazy family antics, high school drama and sweet love all tied into one with this story. Makes a girl say aaaaawwwwww!

I really enjoyed this book, loved the characters and who could fail to love Parker! He always put himself 2nd to Beth without even thinking about it, even when it crushed his heart ☹️ I couldn’t understand her ‘friend’s motives and who needs friends like that anyway! 😡 and as stupid as Jared was, I really would’ve liked to know what happened with him at the end? 🤔

This is another beautiful book by Christina. Young love and mistakes made is all part of the growing up process. Parkers in this world are so rare, when you find one you need to hang on with both hands. Unfortunately bad boys always have some sort of attraction. Be it the rebel in you or the need for something taboo I don't know. This book takes you on an adventure of growing and young love.

I’ve read all of The Boyfriend books by Benjamin and it seems her writing gets better with each book she writes. This book wasn’t bad, but it just didn’t have the arc to pull me in. The plot and the characters seemed flat. While I wanted to love this book, it just didn’t do a lot for me.

Two sides to the story

Really enjoyed this sweet story with two sides. The just-look-at-me best friend, afraid to make his case and risk the loss of a lifetime. Conversely, the overconfident player learning to exist below the surface and find some respect for the women in his life. Both grow a bit, but one wins the prize.
