“Why does this always happen to us?”
Quinn Broomsparkle, wizard extraordinaire

Six months have passed since wizard Quinn Broomsparkle left behind his indentured servant shackles. He’s in love with his half-dragon/half-fairy familiar, Twig Starfig. He’s got a home. Friends. A job. And a father-in-law he could do without. A pretty close to perfect life. But as Quinn has learned the hard way, things rarely stay peaceful for long. Especially when a Starfig’s involved.

Summoned to his home realm and a past he’d thought left behind, Quinn and Twig find themselves in the middle of evil machinations . . . with no clear enemy. When Quinn’s younger brother, Zak, goes missing, it’s Starfig Investigations on the case.

Being the first wizard in a thousand years isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. On top of a missing brother, a broken-hearted red fury, an archivist with a secret, and a ghost pirate-parrot who’s determined to return to his captain, Quinn and Twig’s relationship is sorely tested when questions—and unhappy answers—about their mating dilemma are pushed to the fore.

All Quinn wants is his fairy share of happiness. Is that so much to ask?

MEGHAN MASLOW is truly a rare breed. No, not a unicorn (although that would be sooo cool). She’s a—gasp!—extroverted writer.

She believes that life is meant to be lived. Preferably with lots of people around. Every day is an adventure, or should be. She’s spent a large portion of her life working and living in various countries in Africa. She’s multitalented, having perfected the art of eavesdropping in bars around the world while chugging local brews, and gabbing with anyone who isn’t quick enough to elude her grasp. She believes kindness is contagious, and learning to laugh at yourself is one of life’s greatest gifts (and challenges). She advocates for social justice, believes storytelling can be transformative, and surprisingly isn’t a misanthrope. She loves travel, reading, world music, Moscow Mules, awkward dancing, dreadlocks, her family, and um… writing.

By far, my favorite of the series!

Twig and Quinn have come leaps and bounds regarding their relationship, and their romantic push/pull is no more. They are mates in all things except the official bite and are a solid cohesive team! This definitely made for a less angsty installment and a less frustrating one at that.

Have no fear that things are boring for these two. For sure, they are not without their challenges, because there are many. Quinn is the first male to manifest magic in over a millennia, and unsavory evil doers are none too happy with such a development. Luckily, they have powerful established friends and easily make new allies to help them fight the big fight.

This starts off with a bang and never lets up! That’s an impressive feat to keep this reader’s ferret brain’s attention for 400 plus pages!

Hopefully, we’ll see more of Twig and Quinn soon, as they have both come into their own personally, as well as a duo, with new and improved powers! The eclectic cast of characters continues to grow, and I love how their “family” has evolved. Maslow needs to hurry up!

Lighthearted Wizardry to kick off 2021!

I adore this series and His Fairy Share may well be the best one yet. Not only is it action-packed with a complex mystery storyline that will keep even the sleuthiest sleuth guessing but it was F.U.N.! Maslow pressed the accelerator to the floor from the beginning and kept it there throughout. Nothing like holding onto the side of a speeding train by your fingernails, ammiright?

But I can't lie what I really and truly love are these characters especially when they're in the capable and adept hands of Greg Boudreaux, so much so that when I requested this installment I felt it necessary to re-listen to the first two of the series for the fourth? time. I don't know how he can switch between so many characters, always make them unique AND remember them all! Talk about magical...

Twig, Quinn, Bill, Cookie and Pirate McPiratestein have nestled into my heart and simply put, I love hanging out with them and seeing what sorts of shenanigans they get up to. Shenanigans that will undoubtedly irritate Auric Starfig. Now, I realize I'm in the minority here but that crabby fairy has amused me from the jump and he continues to do so. He only plays a small but crucial role in this installment and I have to say, I missed that cranky bastard.

Usually Twig and Quinn get into their pickles in the Elder but this time they've taken their show on the road to the Hominus Realm. Another change being we're also told His Fairy Share through Quinn's viewpoint rather than Twig. Fitting since he's there to see his family for the first time since being sold into slavery. By them! Needless to say, I was not a fan of his people except Zak but they do meet some good "people" along the way, as they always do. Beckett plus a whole host of pirates will make nice additions to the The Clan of Twig and, the good lord willing, will play a role in Starfig Investigations #4.

Because it's The Clan of Twig and what it represents that draws me to this series again and again. It validates and continues to reinforce the notion that people can overcome perceived shortcomings particularly with the love and devotion of others. It also continues to turn the social order on its head and propose anti-heroes as the ones to emulate and conventional leaders as the ones to side eye. The fact that all of this clever subtext is couched in a tongue in cheek tone, fun capers with a heaping side of sexy hijinks is precisely what makes Starfig Investigations one of my favorite fantasy series and will surely lead to a fifth re-listen.

Recommended! (not as a stand alone though)

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

I am seriously in love with this series and was sooooo excited when I learned book 3 was going to exist. Quinn Broomsparkle is adorable and I loved him from the second I met him. And Twig, ahh, Twig, he's like me in that he guards his hoard with fire and threat of dismemberment. ;) At the end of book 2 we see Quinn receive essentially a summons to return to his home realm and meet with the Council. I knew there was going to be trouble. With these two, there is always trouble. :)

What I did NOT expect was the LEVEL of trouble these two find!!! And argh, I can't tell you all that happens because it will spoil the surprises. I will say there is deceit, murder, Pirates, lots of magic, and loads of secrecy!!! The following is a spoiler but sort of vague:

The story is awesome!! Maslow is an extremely talented author who has created an exciting world with Quinn, Twig, Bill, Cookie & friends, Pie, Twigs father (who has a reveal of his own at the end), and now we meet Quinn's family and friends, plus others. Quinn is there to get answers on how to send Pie to the great beyond, and to finally get an answer on if he will lose his magic if he mates Twig. Then there is also the added bonus of getting closure with his family. Hate Quinn's family, except for his younger brother Zak, who always looked up to Quinn. Of course since Quinn was sent to be a sex slave because he couldn't find his familiar, Zak became sullen and thought Quinn didn't care about him, so typical teenage emo business.

When the full truth behind Quinn being summoned "home" is revealed, I am drawn in the to action and also pissed because Quinn and Twig were treated so bad! I knew they would succeed and live and triumph in the end, blah, blah, blah. :D But the stuff they went through was not fun to read and I didn't know the HOW of success which is stressful.

Please let there be another book!!!! Please, please, please! This is a great series and I do not want to say goodbye to Twig and Quinn. Plus!!!!! Zak is crazy about Bill! This is adorable to see and Bill is all blushy and almost afraid of Zak! Then there is Pie and what happens with him in the other realm. That was so cool!! So many new friends and stories to explore, this can't be the end!

You can bet when this comes out in audio I will add it to my collection. I am so excited to hear how these new characters will sound and am so, so, so bouncing in my seat to hear Quinn and Twig again on this adventure. If you haven't enjoyed this series you need to start, and by start, I mean with book 1 because this series HAS to be read in order.

5 stars all around, and a million more for the new realm adventure!

When I found out b0ok 3 existed!!

Greg Boudreaux's performance deserves an OSCAR! After being bewitched, bedragoned and befairied by the previous book, now I'm also bespelled. With Broomsparkle-y sprinkles. Seriously, I have no idea how he does it, but each new book in this series tops the last one and I'm slowly but surely out of superlatives.

Oh, and maybe I should mention the story too, hmm? THE BEST so far and it made my happy place even happier. ;-)

Incredible!!!
Another amazing story from this series, a book to have fun, I was entertained, intriguing plot, gripping adventures, hysterical comedy, steaming boiling hot sex scenes, Love and devotion between the main characters, the friendship, the mythology, the creative characters, everything was perfect, high praises to Meghan Maslow!!!
I absolutely adore the comical bits of this series, the slogans, book titles, the products, the sayings and cultural expressions, I laughed from time to time although this book took a more serious course, with investigations, the closures, the action scenes were spectacular, I loved it!

I’m really satisfied with this series so far! Six stars, another to my shelf of favourites!

I also have this book on Audible, astounding performance from one of my favourite narrators Greg Boudreaux, spectacular acting, his talent to make different voices always impress me, fully committed, I savoured every moment! Kudos to him!

After contemplating my rating for this book over the weekend, I’ve decided to round up my stars because of how FUN this reading experience was.

As someone who has consistently enjoyed the previous stories in this wildly imaginative M/M fantasy series, I was expecting more of the same—that is to say: great world-building, adventurous plots, wonderful and diverse cast of mythical characters, a sweeping romance, and plenty of belly laughs to keep the mood just right!

His Fairy Share was all those things, of course, but this third instalment also went to a whole new level of epic, with higher stakes, more action and intrigue, greater character and relationship development—that left me marvelling at how outstanding Twig and Quinn had become as a memorable fated mates couple—and, overall, just a more exciting and entertaining story arc.

I highly recommend this entire series to all M/M fantasy lovers because it really is building in its level of awesome with each subsequent sequel, and I for one cannot wait to see what magic mishaps and adventures lie in wait for Twig, Quinn and all their amazing friends.

If I thought that book 2 is quite plot heavy, the last one in the series is not only full of drama, but also contains a good dose of angst (which is a good thing, btw!))

So much happens, my head is spinning just trying to sort it out.
The main thing is that Quinn and Trig sort their relationship out – even if the way it goes was an easy path to take – and save a whole world.

Some things that happened before fall in place by the end, but quite a few remain unexplained. Most of all – what happened to the storyline of someone trying to kill Twig’s father?

Again, for me, there is too much plot and too little relationship development. I adore Quinn and Twig, and I really would have liked to see more of their ‘power struggle’ and how it affects them.

There’s one part I found really odd, namely when

Anyway, one thing’s for sure – this author surprised me quite a few times with quirky plot twists and funny names and ideas. The creative swear words really are a hoot!

All in all, this was great fun, but ultimately more Quinn and Twig and less action-packed plot would have been appreciated!

Best one yet

OMG this one ticked pretty much all my boxes for what I love to read in a paranormal fantasy mystery series.

I've likened this series to Robert Asprin's Myth Adventures series before but this one reminded me of Skeeve's madcap adventures more than the previous two.

Not that the storyline is remotely similar, just in the way Meghan entwined several different strands of plot together with some great humour, while also demonstrating a ruthless ability to do what's necessary for the narrative.

I never saw half of the twists and turns coming and I had an immense smile on my face the whole time I was reading!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Meghan Maslow has done it again with another romp in her fantastical and amusing world of the Starfig Investigations series. I was eager for another installment in the series and this book might just be my favorite. There was one issue I had with the story, but other than that, I was absorbed in the fun, funny, and sometimes harrowing exploits of Twig, Quinn, and company.

This time, we get the story from Quinn’s POV. After having the first two books from Twig’s POV, I wasn’t quite sure how this would play out. When the series begins, Quinn is a bit of an unknown and he keeps his secrets close. He opens up more in the second book, and we get to see more of him. It seemed a fitting time to see the story told from Quinn’s POV, and I have to say, even though I enjoyed him previously, he hadn’t endeared himself to me as Twig had. But I can no longer say that. Seeing things from Quinn’s view changed a lot of my perception of him, and Maslow does an outstanding job of really sucking the reader in by showing us how strong, and how human, Quinn is.

This series is a lot of fun and Greg Boudreaux continues to be absolutely awesome - his portrayal of the ghost parrot cracks me up.

Some serious shit goes down in this instalment - Quinn returns home for the first time in years, and he and Twig find themselves embroiled in all sorts of political intrigue and shenanigans.

3.75 stars, rounded up

I was worried when I saw this was Quinn's POV because I hadn't fully warmed up to him over the last two books, but I ended up enjoying his POV a lot and it offered some much needed insights into his feelings for Twig, their bond and everything else. Quinn's brother Zak is an interesting addition, and I liked Beckett a lot. Pie gets some closure, which was nice. Getting to see Twig through Quinn's eyes was fun too, and Quinn gets some much needed lessons in valuing all of himself, not just those parts he thought makes him valuable.

The endgame was telegraphed a little too much. And for this having one battle scene after another, my lord did this drag on and on. There wasn't enough downtime to break it up and give those scenes levity, and there was just too much play-by-play that bogged those scenes down. Maslow also used fragment sentences much too excessively, and often they felt more like typos, like an ongoing sentence accidentally broken off due to bad punctuation rather than because the information being conveyed required emphasis.

I did go back and look at the speculation I left for myself in the review for the second book.

Twig gets to meet Quinn's family. Oh boye, oh boye are they just the pits. Except for his younger brother. Just an angry teen!

Here I thought the only sparks would be the breaking of another headboard. But why not start a revolution instead of figuring out that pesky mating bond issue. Oh, how about figuring out how to get the ghost parrot past the pearly gates. Wait there has to be room for standing up to Twig's father. Cause the breaker of all bones Dragon Queen is team Quinntig...Twiginn...her favorite hatchling's mate choice.

Are we still combining favorite couplings names together? I'm late to the trend!

I enjoyed this new installment of this series. But I felt a little more disconnected at the same time. I loved getting more focus on Quinn and his past. But so many new characters were introduced that it felt like a whole new world...which it was so I'm not making sense. But yeah. I still love Quinn and Twig together. I love their little ragtag family they've made. I did get emotional at one spot...so I guess I wasn't as disconnected as I think I was.

Not a dull moment in this book: Witches and Pirates and Dragons, oh my! :)
Our MCs manage to save not one, but two worlds (ok, maybe save one and make the other safer).

The only negative thing that irked me quite a bit is a very generous amount of misplaced modifiers. Oh well, I guess it makes for some interesting reading.

Screw it, I am not splitting hairs with 4.5 stars, this deserves 5 for me especially with the audiobook! Greg Boudreaux was the absolute perfect fit for this series!

I have loved this series since it started. It truly seemed like it was going to be some sort of ridiculous fun MM fantasy because of the names in the blurb and there is some of that but there is a LOT more going for it and I am thoroughly impressed! I know that the plot is very fast with what feels like a lot of different storylines but I think the author brought it all together pretty amazingly all things considered. There's deep emotion, political intrigue, mystery, along with a good portion of very hot sex! And all of this done in a fantasy setting with a half-dragon/half-fairy who's hot as balls, wizards and witches, pirates, demons and more! I live for this shit! Lol It's reminiscent of Tales of Verania and Discworld for me and they are some of my favorites.

One thing I want to mention is how well this author writes secondary characters. They have so much personality that you really want to know more about them. I would like so many spin-offs just because she has so many great secondary characters.

As far as I know, there's plans for at least one more but I don't know when it will happen or if there will be more after that.

3.5 Stars. This book takes the POV of Quinn which was a fun twist. I loved the first half of the book as classic Twig and Quin makes waves in the human world. But after that things get kind of messy. Hectic. All at once and it felt kind of forced. Kind of like an anime that got cancelled so they ran around last minute trying to bring a season's worth of teasers to fruition. Just felt cheap. I would much prefer the series to be stretched out. To give the characters and plot the justice it deserves AND to get me more time with Twig and Quinn in the Elder.
On an unrelated note totally ship Bill and certain Griffin. So if I certain author would be interested in a spin off series you know that might be a good place to start. Hint. Hint. Wink. WINK.

Wow, what a whirlwind of a story. There is nearly no time to catch your breath and if nothing is happening for a time then Quinn and Twig might find themselves in the eye of the storm.

We're back in Quinn's home realm where the witches sold him into his indentured slavery years ago but now he's back as the first wizard since 1000 years and of course not every witch is happy to have him back and Quinn still have to find out the real reason why the council requested his return and he has to meet his family which is anything but a happy reunion. Good that there are old friends and finding new ones because those 2 need any help they can get when the next part of the prophecy is revealed and their enemies take advantage of the opportunity that opens when Twig reluctantly returns to the Elder realm.

Different to the previous books there is no doubt about their relationship, no struggle and no holding back. It's obvious that they complete and balance each other and even during their one darker moment there's only a bit of angst and not for long. It's even necessary for Quinn to believe in his worth.

There are slight glitches on the road like Quinn's easy acceptance of the old magic without caring about what it is and means and I don't know how I feel about Zak and his flirty shenanigans in the last part of the book but if you like a story with adventure, humor, some sincere moments and intrigue, if you enjoy big battles and danger and emotional development and if it's an advantage to have great unique supporting characters with their own life and background while the focus is still on the relationship of the main characters … well, then what's taking you so long to start this series?

Now I'm only anxious that this is going to be only a trilogy. Somehow this book would be the perfect end for their voyage what's there to gain after having it all … but I cross my fingers that Meagan Maslow finds a way that there is still place for development and that she's willing to continue.

I don't know why it took me so long to get around to reading this story. I was really enjoying this series and I'm oh so happy I got back to it. This was such fun. There's some great humor and it's paired with lovely action. And of course...there's pirates! I do so enjoy me some pirates, plus Pie finally gets to find a place to call home. That parrot needed his captain.

Twig may be a dragon, but it's hard to stand in front and protect his wizard from everything. Especially when it's the witches of his past calling him home with no real idea as to why. They were the ones that sold him and now they want Quinn's attention, now that he's got Twig as his familiar and his magic is active. The whole thing feels like nothing but trouble.

This was pretty much non-stop action as our lovely heroes found themselves in trouble almost from minute one. Nothing's quite as it seems in the higher ups with in the witches community. Something is rotten in Denmark and both guys just want to get out and get back home before things go too crazy. Of course, things aren't going to work out that way. I enjoyed this story a lot and I loved seeing Quinn get to reconnect with his younger brother. Zak was amusing in his own right for a petulant teen. There's some loss in this one and Quinn definitely grows as an individual as well as in the strength of his relationship with Twig.

Really enjoyed this. It made me smile and I'm going to definitely jump on the next book a lot more quickly.

It was awesome! I love Quinn & Twig!! This book should not be read as a stand-a-lone. So in the last book, Quinn has been summoned back to the land of his birth. If it was up to him, he wouldn't go back as they sold him into slavery years ago, and his elder brother & parents are real pieces of work. But since they haven't figured out how to bond without Quinn losing his magic, off they go. Twig is not well received, as familiars are really nothing more than animals. Twig is obviously not and they have a hard time accepting that he is just like everyone else, well except for the half dragon and half fairy thing he has going on. Also, them being mates disgusts more than one. The only people that Quinn is happy to see is his best friend, who he got into a lot of trouble with when they were kids, and his youngest brother Zac. But there is something not right going on and of course Quinn & Twig are thrust into the center of the evil that Quinn uncovers. This was an action packed book; there is betrayal, which I never saw coming, the answer to why Quinn is the first wizard in a 1,000 years, and the liberation of a suppressed people. Oh and the most important thing, the resolution to the mating issue. I really hope there will be more stories in this series as I don't want to see it end.

Maslow returns to her Starfig Investigations series in the third book with a different point of view. The previous two books are written from Twig Starfig's perspective. This time, his wizard-mate, Quinn Broomsparkle, takes center stage as Quinn and Twig travels to Quinn's home at the Hominus Realm. Being the first wizard in centuries (after men's magic seems to disappears from the realm) is getting Quinn summoned by the Council of Divine Magic. And it's also time for Quinn to face his family again.

Since I'm reading this back-to-back (and I've prepared myself with the change of POV) I have no problem of familiarizing myself with Quinn's voice. This is Quinn's book, for sure, and I'm so happy with a lot of things that is resolved here

- Quinn reuniting with his younger brother, Zak
- Quinn acknowledges the mating bond
- Quinn understanding the use of Scrodbun’s war hammer
- Quinn taking a more important role in the realm
- Quinn standing up to Twig's father, Auric Starfig.

In addition, and I wonder how that will do for Starfig-Broomsparkle clan in the next books.

The battle section of this book is exciting (we have kraken!) albeit a bit too long (I ended up skipping through the pages during the battle). It can be trimmed a bit, IMHO. Also the whole () feels a bit cliché.

BUT, this book is still a winner, especially because there are few of new characters to be around with as well like Zak (Quinn's flirty brother) and Beckett (the witch-pirate). PLUS, Pirate McPiratestein, or Pie for short, finally understands why he is being left behind and settles in for a new 'job' as ()

I'm SO READY for the fourth book to be released in December. Thankfully I don't have to wait a bit too long for it. Sometimes starting a series late in the game has its benefits 😆

Loved it!! Not sure but this may be the best of the series. So much happens - magic trickery, ghostly visitations, lotsa pirates, treachery and heaps of fighting. Poor Quinn and Twig are once again in the thick of things. This was definitely a bit more bloodthirsty than others but showed the gravity of the situation.
Definitely a reread series.

An epic third book in this series. Told completely from Quinn's perspective (the first two have been Twig's POV).

Greg Boudreaux once again did an excellent job of bringing the whole cast to life.

This series needs to be read in order.
