The Disgraced Bride

Rate this book
Miss Emma Bavidge can barely make her way through society without someone whispering about her.

Her father’s disgrace has ruined her reputation and left her struggling in society. Her one hope is Lady Emily Smithton, who leads ‘The Spinsters Guild’ and has promised to help. When questioned, however, Emma cannot pretend that she is immune to the charms of one gentleman in particular – Viscount Morton.

Viscount Nathaniel Morton cannot help but feel sorry for Miss Bavidge. Knowing her father as well as he does, he is well aware that her reputation bears no stain other than that of her father’s disgrace. He wishes to help her in some way, wanting to encourage her back into society’s good graces, but does not quite know how to go about it.

One thing is for certain – he cannot allow her to know the truth about the part he played in bringing about her father’s fall from grace, not even if he begins to find his heart yearning for no one but her!

Can Emma and Nathaniel find love and happiness despite the secrets between them?

This book is the second book of a series called The Spinsters Guild, a group of unusual ladies who are almost “on the shelf”. Can Lady Emily help them find their perfect match?

Emma Bavidge was in an unenviable position due to an action of her father. She was gossiped about and was the centre of unwelcome attention. Emma has asked Lady Smithton for help in finding a husband. Emma was quite bold on one way but unsure in others. Viscount Nathaniel Morton, feels guilty about his part in her father’s downfall and sets about helping Emma to be accepted in society. Morton is an honourable man who begins to develop an attraction towards Emma, as Emma does towards him. However, Morton has made an enemy of an old friend and he is determined to thwart Morton’s relationship with Emma. I liked both Emma and Morton, however, I’m still not sure about Lady Smithton. On the one hand she is helping out the young ladies in her club but I don’t like the way she uses Lord Havisham. This was an enjoyable read, if a little predictable. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Clean Historical

I am sorry, but I do not much care for "clean" romances, and that is what this one is. This book is well written and you like "clean" romances this is your sort of book if you also like Historicals. I however do not like my romances to clean.

Lady Emily Smithton leads ‘The Spinsters Guild’.
This Guild is to help single girls who need help
to find suitable match.
Miss Emma Bavidge turns to Lady Smithton for
help. It seems her father has been disgraced.
This has ruined her reputation within the ton so
she finds herself in a vulnerable situation within
society. Emma reveals that she is drawn to
Viscount Nathaniel Morton.
Little does Emma know that Viscount Nathaniel
Morton is the source of the rumors regarding
her father. He confided in his best friend who
broke their pact and the rumors spread like
wildfire now his ex-best friend is blackmailing
him to keep Nathaniel from his growing feelings
toward Emma.
What is Nathaniel to do when Emma discovers
the source of the family’s fall in society? Will she
forgive him? Will they end up together?
The book is easy to read with writing that flows
smoothly. The writing allows the reader to get
a glimpse of the characters and their action as
if the reader was right in the middle of the story’s
timeline.
The main characters were well defined, relatable
and realistic for that time period. The supporting
characters were well written and interesting.
This book is book # 2 in the The Spinsters Guild
series. It can be read as a stand alone with no
problems.
An enjoyable, recommended read.
I volunteered to read The Disgraced Bride.
Thanks to the author via Booksprout. My opinion
is voluntary and my own.

I don't think I have ever read any of Rose's work before but I really enjoyed this one. Emma Bavidge has been disgraced because of her father trying to blackmail a peer. Now her father is sending her to another season. She only had this one chance. She asks a woman who had been disgraced but is doing well to help her. She needed help to navigate the men trying to take advantage of her. Lord Nathaniel Morton is the cause of Emma's father being disgraced. He tries to help her but thing don't go the way he hoped. They have quite a journey to find their happy ever after. I know you will love it.

I've mentioned many times, I dislike with a passion where only 1/2 truths are finally told, but rest is held back. The reason was lame. The story more of a cookie cutter when you have omission. No excitement because you knew exactly where the story was going.

This surprised me, because I've been enjoying this author's writings lately. But, these character's are not strong and I felt no connection. The villain was what you expected. The person the h turns too, is not above reproach and you would think this would ruin her reputation. Granted it is all rumor but the TON, doesn't need facts.

This is a clean story, with barely sweet kisses. Plus the story ends at 90% mark and rest is blurb for next story. I wish the author would have used the last 10% in this story because it ends abruptly.

No cheating, HEA, no romance and clean. Plus title misleading, our h is not a bride. (ljb)

Behaving Rather Poorly😱

Viscount Nathaniel Morton🐺, is aware of Miss Emma Bavridge's💃💋 shame in front of the ton, because he is the guilty party who blabbed his knowledge of overhearing her father's attempt at blackmailing another lord!

He feels so guilty He tries to make it up to her by talking to her at the ton gatherings and dancing with her, when most of the other people are shunning her and talking behind her back. Soon He begins to see what a good, decent, young woman Emma💃💋 is.

At the time, He told his friend Rochester👺, what he had overheard from Emma's father in strictest confidence. Rochester👺, who He thought was his best friend and confidant! Instead, Lord Rochester👺 shot his mouth off to everyone who would listen at Whites gentlemen's club. Some friend!

Well now he is Nathaniel's ex friend, because Rochester👺 is going to persue Emma💃💋 and probably ruin her , or else he tells Emma💃💋 it was Nathaniel🐺 who ruined Her father, Viscount Hawkridge.
So now Nathaniel🐺 is being blackmailed by Rochester👺! Nathaniel🐺 wants to keep Emma💃💋 away from Rochester👺, but He can't tell Her why, or she will hate him!

Emma's father is ostracized and retreats to the country. Even though Emma💃💋 is completely innocent, she takes the brunt of the ton's gossip and hate. She just wants to meet a decent man and get married. She believes Nathaniel🐺 is that man. How can he now live up to her expectations, knowing what he has done to her father? He has to tell her his secret, but how can he, without losing her?

I loved this well written, intriguing book about the aristocratic and biased ton society of the Regency Era and the two young people trapped in its machinations.

This story combined ideas that are quite often seen in Regency romance but rarely together. There is a spinsters’ guild; spinsters and avowed bluestockings definitely seem to be recurrent themes in Regency lately. The heroine is suffering in society because of the downfall of her father. She still hopes to marry, so she goes to London in hopes of finding a suitor. The hero did have some involvement in her father's nasty business, but he feels sorry for the heroine, as he knows that she is at no fault but is being punished for it, and he wishes he could do something to help ease her way in society.

I found the writing in this book to be a little stilted, particularly the dialogue. I can tell the author is striving to make it sound like historical speech, but not only were some phrases awkward, the characters unfortunately all sounded alike in mimicking this variant of historical-like speech. I also found it confusing that two of the female characters were named Emma and Emily, one of them the heroine and the other being the head of the spinsters’ guild. There were some issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage (beyond the UK spellings), but nothing that was overly distracting. I found that I actually liked the arc of the story, but I was put off by the very unnatural-sounding language.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

A well written enjoyable read. The pace was good & the characters had depth. I wished Emma had had a different Christian name as at the beginning I kept confusing Emma & Emily. I would have also liked an epilogue & to have learned what happened to the villain unless we find out in subsequent books! I look forward to the next books in the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Summary: A short, clean, HEA historical romance. Book #2, although there is enough explanation in the second book that you don't need to read #1 first.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series so I was ready to be enthralled with the second, but this one left me a bit wanting. I did enjoy it and definitely want to read the next book, but...
*Spoilers*
"H" needed to find a backbone and tell "h" his story - especially when he was threatened repeatedly with exposure. He continues to put it off (too many times) and finally the villain's version of the truth comes out, separating the couple. I realize the story was set up that way to give it conflict, but it took chapter after chapter to get there ... and then the climax and resolution all happened very quickly.

This is a fascinating, dramatic and sweet story. Lord Morton is kind, chivalrous and protective. Emma is strong, determined and naive. After foiling a blackmail scheme, Lord Morton inadvertently cause the ton to know what Emma's father was up to, via Lord Morton's friend Lord Rochester. Emma had to face the ton in order to find an eligible bachelor to marry. Lord Morton kept his eyes on Emma when she was around, just to try and mitigate the scorn and drama that was thrown her way. He didn't intend to court her, but he couldn't let Rochester use and destroy her, and he certainly never planned to fall in love with her. She found herself liking him very much, which caused Lord Rochester to burn with jealousy. It has a great storyline and interesting characters.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

Emma’s father was a selfish manipulator, who ruined her with his actions. She is mocked by the gentlemen of the ton and doesn’t know who to trust. Lord Morton feels guilty over his part in her father’s and as a result Emma’s downfall and at first spends time with her to make amends and protect her from his unscrupulous former friend. But when she finds out the truth, will she still want to be with him? I liked Emma’s fellow Spinsters Guild friends and look forward to their stories.

A sweet Regency Romance

The Disgraced Bride by Rose Pearson, book 2 in her Spinsters Guild series, is a delightful sweet Regency romance. It is the perfect book for a cozy interlude on a rainy day. A cup of tea and a blanket on the couch in front of a nice fire in the fireplace completes the picture of how this book made me feel. It is an easy read, entertaining, with a happily ever after that to me are the makings of a magical escape to a different place and time.
I especially like how Rose takes a not so nice fact about the Regency time period and weaves a tale where the "weaker sex" comes out on top. The men in the story become better people because of the women's strength of character. And the "beau monde" are shamed for being small-minded as well as petty. Oh if only that was true, how might the struggle for women's rights changed sooner?!
Well worth your time to cozy up to this wonderful novel. Don't forget the tea and scones!

The Disgraced Bride by Rose Pearson, book 2 in her Spinsters Guild series. Emma’s father attempt at blackmail is uncovered and now Emma finds herself being gossiped about as she attends the social gatherings to find a husband. Viscount Nathaniel Morton feels sorry for Emma and wants to help without having his involvement in her father’s downfall being revealed. It is his guilt that initially has him interacting with Emma but as times goes by he starts to like her.

This story was a perfect example of what happens when the truth is hidden and secrets have the potential to destroy happiness. This is an enjoyable read if you like clean romantic stories with wonderful characters.

I enjoy both steamy and clean romances and read a variety of authors that write both genres. If you are looking for a clean, sweet, historical romance you should read Rose Pearson’s books. She has a wide variety of different venues written sweetly, are enjoyable and will not have steamy scenes.

Fairly standard storyline with the heroine and hero making progress in the relationship but with a secret looming in the background ready to cause disaster. If only they would have had an honest conversation, all the drama would have been easily avoided.

I was disappointed that there was no real progress made in the relationship between Lady Smithton and Lord Havisham from the previous book in the series.

I didn't feel much connection between the main characters. Even during the proposal scene Emma doesn't use Lord Morton's given name. Also, there is the repetitious use of the phrase 'and the like' by multiple characters throughout which became slightly irritating.

A quick read that didn't really grab my interest unfortunately.

Basic nothing of interest

Instead of repeating the same thing for the reader how about just mentioning it in one sentence. You can pick up on character reactions but I'm not two I'll remember the secret you don't have to tell me again. Instead develop actual characters that have interests. Lots of events were happening at the time, science and historical discoveries, philosophy and art all of this is part of getting to know another person. So have your characters have actual conversations rather than tell me that he found her astute and cheerful. The characters are boring sketches and I'll be honest I skipped most of the repeat material.

Illogical

This whole story hinges on an illogical premise. Confiding in someone you trust is not the same as violating that trust and spreading scandalous gossip about what was confided. And yet Morton, who did the honorable thing, labels himself in the wrong while he believes Miss Bavidge will approve of yhe gossiper. If Morton really thinks she's that shallow and stupid, why wouldn't he just leave her to Rochester??
Emily who syarted the spinsters thing was only mentioned in chapter one and plays no role in getting Miss Bavidge betrothed.
This is such a ridiculously disappointing installment in this series I won't be continuing.

I really wanted to like this novel, but it just didn't do it for me. The heroine is spunky and strong, and the hero, kind and honorable, but I just couldn't get behind their love story. The language felt so clunky and wooden. I love a slow burning romance, but this romance had no burn--or even real tension--behind it. The hero and heroine have a growing affection for each other that suddenly blossoms into declarations of undying love after the defeat of the villain.

The first of the spinsters is featured in this book with some appearances by Miss Crosby also. This book at the beginning has quite a few scenes from the first book which make this book truly standalone, though I still recommend reading them all in order. There are wonderful characters and unique situations. I started with the fifth book of the series and am returning to read them all in order and then to reread the fifth since I’ll have so much more backstory!

The Disgraced Bride

This was a very interesting story on young ladies who were thought of as spinsters in a time when it was fashionable to attend parties and such with a chaperone. Miss Bavidge a young lady whose father had been found out on a gamble he was trying to pull only to be disgraced and driven from the ton as the wealthy were called back in the time. This is book two in a good series of short clean stories that are easily and quickly read. The characters are entertaining and well defined. There seemed to be some discrepancies throughout the five books as to how Lady Smithton met each of the young ladies and a little timeline problems. All in all I would definitely recommend this author and this series.

Interesting developments ahead in this Regency romance

The Spinsters Guild is alive and well in this second in the series. Twists and turns in the plot as well as familiar characters abound. The characters are well-developed and the plot has unsuspected twists, making this a typical Rose Pearson read. You won't be disappointed in this excellent goodfead!

A pleasant, clean romantic story. It contains good warnings about the possible consequences of not coming out with the truth sooner rather than later, of jumping to conclusions and the absolute silliness of society. I feel the characters could have been a bit more forceful but then there probably wouldn't have been any story to write. The tale is all about misunderstandings.

After her father’s disgrace at attempting blackmail Emma is sent to London to find a husband. The ton is too busy gossiping about her to give her a chance. One man only asked her to dance and then did not make fun of her afterwards. Lord Morton was feeling guilt because his belief in a friend had caused all the gossip about Emma.

Quality Regency Romance

4.75 stars, rounded up - This story held my attention pretty well. There were only a couple places I chose to skim through, hence my rating. With a clean plot and characters I found myself invested in, the book was enjoyable. If you enjoy that kind of story, why not give this one a try?
