It’s been only days since Rowan and her friends eliminated the immediate threat to magic users and Vampires, but they’re already back on the hunt. Rowan’s out for vengeance, and she’s never been more driven—or angry. But she’s up against a being stronger than any she’s ever fought. To bring it down she’ll need more than the powers the goddess Brigid gave her…

This time she’ll need her friends, too.

She knows her husband will always have her back. As an ancient Vampire and Scion of North America, Clive has more clout and dominance than almost anyone. Rowan’s small but trusted inner circle insist they’ll join her in the thick of the battle, even as she argues it’s too dangerous for them. She’s also got a new dog. Familiar. Whatever. Star is a magical being put in Rowan’s path to help and protect her.

The hunt for ancient evil takes Rowan and her team to London and back to Las Vegas, bringing with them an unexpected alliance. Fortified by their rage, grief and determination, Rowan and her friends will stop at nothing when they track their enemy to the high desert in a final, deadly showdown.

The basics: Lauren is a mom, a partner, a best friend and a daughter. Living in the rainy but beautiful Pacific Northwest, she spends her late evenings writing like a fiend when she finally wrestles all of her kids to bed.

So I had heard that this was the final installment, but I can't find any evidence to support that and the book doesn't feel like it's the end to the series. Did I just slowly read this over the course of 5 months for nothing?

It was great, as always. I just thought it was the final book, so I forced myself to read it slowly and savor it. *sigh* I'm gonna go back and reread the whole thing tonight and hope for book #7.

This is the last day of 2019 and this is my final review of the year. It seemed fitting to close out the year with this book, the sixth book in the Goddess with a Blade series. Why? Because the first book in this series, the book for which the series was named, was the first book I ever reviewed from NetGalley back in 2011 when Reading Reality first started as Escape Reality, Read Fiction.

I still remember not just the book, but the whole scene, sitting at the table in the house we were living in at the time, racing through Goddess with a Blade accompanied by a glass of iced tea and being completely sucked into the world that the author had created.

(As an aside, the cover on the left is the original cover for Goddess with a Blade. I much preferred the original cover aesthetic for the series and wish that they’d continued in that direction. My 2 cents.)

So this is a series that I read and review pretty much as soon as the next one appears on NetGalley. And here we are, six books in and Rowan Summerwaite is very much still going strong. Goddess strong.

But this is the sixth book in an ongoing series, and the events in Blood and Blade are the direct consequences of the shit that went down in the previous book, Wrath of the Goddess. And the story in Wrath of the Goddess is a consequence of what went right and wrong in the previous books.

So this one is the end of the chain. It doesn’t feel like the end of the series, but it is definitely the end of the long arc. As someone who has read the whole thing – although not nearly recently enough, it felt like I could hear the thud of one door closing echoing throughout the entire book – along with the whisper-creak of the next door being wrestled open at the other side.

In other words, this is no place to start the series. It would be like watching Avengers: Endgame without watching any of the movies that led up to it. The endgame has no resonance without knowing where the game began.

But if you’re looking for a fascinating and compelling blend of urban fantasy and paranormal romance, this series has all the mysterious mythology, arrogant but romantic vampires, ugly political infighting and kickass heroines you’ll ever want to meet.

Start with Goddess with a Blade and watch Rowan Summerwaite kick ass, take names and bring down corruption with a load of snark, a lot of deeply hidden heart, and one really big-ass sword.

Escape Rating B+: You can’t start the series here. Period. Exclamation point. It just won’t make any sense whatsoever. That being said, there is so much that still needs cleaning up that has been festering for so damn long that it was a bit difficult to get back into exactly where Rowan was at the end of Wrath of the Goddess and what’s left to clean up.

What I loved about this series from the very beginning is the depth of the worldbuilding. One of the things that I’ve always loved about urban fantasy is the way that it twists on the world we know and adds so much depth, both in its mythology and in its politics. Immortal beings tend to hold immortal grudges and I really dig on watching that play out in the modern world.

Another thing I love about this series in particular is the way that Rowan in particular, as well as her relationship with Clive, reminds me very fondly of Eve Dallas and Roarke in the In Death series. Rowan and Eve have a LOT of traits in common, to the point that if their worlds ever collided they’d either adopt each other as sisters or fight to the death because they are too much alike. But they both have the kind of no-nonsense attitude with full snarkitude, that I adore along with the brains and strength to back it up.

I compare their relationship to Eve and Roarke because Rowan and Clive also start out on what look like the opposite sides of a barbed-wire fence and work out their relationship early in the series. Dane, like Robb, does an excellent job of portraying a romance that is still sweet, hot and occasionally barbed between two strong-willed alpha personalities and that’s always fun to watch.

This series has been a wild and marvelous ride from the very beginning. It is obvious from the way that Blood and Blade ends that there are more stories to be told in Rowan’s world – and I can’t wait to read them.

Blood and Blade is the sixth book in Lauren Dane’s Goddess of the Blade Series.

This book picks up a few days after Rowan and her friends eliminated the immediate threat to vampires and magic users. The hunt is still on and everyone works to undercover the people or person responsible for ordering the death of her friends and countless other innocents. But this time, the being involved is stronger then anyone has ever seen. Rowan must rely on the Goddess, Clive and her friends if they are to succeed. Will they survive the coming battle? Read it and find out.

Blood and Blade is another great instalment to the Goddess of the Blades series. It has a great balance between love, humour and suspense that keeps the reader from putting the book down until it’s finished. Rowan and Clive continue to be an amazing and quirky couple that work together to protect the ones they love. They balance each others’ strengths and smooth each others sharp edges, proving that the love they share knows no bounds. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series to see how their relationship grows.

I received an ebook copy of this book from Netgalley for an honest review.

I'm so damn happy to see this series gets better and better.
The characters actually change and evolve throughout the books.

Rowan and her friends are getting closer to the finish line, to finding the person responsible for all their pain and suffering. They find out more about the Blood Front and there are some things they did not see coming.
The big villain behind it all. Kind of disappointing. Such a major power and they dealt with it pretty fast. I've seen a pattern with these books where the majority of the book they investigate and hunt the enemy and the fight at the end is rushed and not that exciting because most of the characters are too important to the story to have anything happen to them.
Or maybe I'm wrong. The author could be waiting to destroy us all with an awesome ending for the series. One can hope.

Am I the only one that isn't that impressed with Genevieve? Sure, she's powerful but I just don't really like her.

Star was an unexpected and awesome addition. And I like that Rowan and Clive accepted her so easily and fast.

I really hope the next book will focus on the celebrations at the Keep and we get to see more of Theo. He's a lovable scary bastard, but I like him. Plus that it's so damn amusing to see Rowan deal with idiots at these events.

So. If you liked the previous books then definitely read this one because the story only gets better.

Sorry I’m a bit late with this, so here we go.

Rowan Summerwaite is on the hunt for the mastermind who has been pulling the strings behind all the mysterious shit that has been going on throughout the series. Now with a few new allies, Rowan is finally going to even the score.

I was so excited to be able to read an advanced copy from Netgalley that I couldn’t download the arc fast enough. And while I loved being in this world again, it did not exactly read like a final book in a series... (so potentially more books to come in the future?)

Anyway, Rowan has really upped her game. She is a character that pulls at your heartstrings, while you cheer on her ass-kicking tendencies. Clive Stewart and Alice are still amazing characters, and we get more of our favourite magic user, Genevieve, in this book. Rowan and Brigid’s bond is strengthening, and Rowan will need all the help she can get as she goes into what might be her final confrontation (if the series is truly over). We learn more about the dust devils - they need a series of their own! - and why Genevieve is attracted to them.

Would have given this a better rating but for one of the threads that were left undone, which was what happened to the detective from Book 1? I thought for sure he’d have been a part of this whole mess, but he just seems to have been forgotten as the action picked up throughout the series.

Still, barring that plot faux pas, I will definitely be picking up a paperback copy of this book to add to my shelves. A rather unique UF take on vampires and mythology.

There was something about this one...Rowan seems settled, Clive the same. Sure they are running around chasing the big bad, but as a couple they are good. Even amid the chaos that they fall in they are finding their stride of working together, making sure that they and their people are safe. The later an important factor as some of the bad hit a bit too close to home for Clive. I thought they managed the situation in a good way, but better was the aftermath when they had to tell the First.

I also think Rowan in on a great idea of how new hunter groups should work, the hard part will be getting all the parties involved to agree with her. Maybe with the help of her new wonder dog she can prevail.

What a fabulous series! The main adventure seems to be over, but I doubt. Loving the new characters and can't wait to see them develop.

I LOVED this 6th book in the series! Book #5, Wrath of the Goddess" was good, but somehow felt a bit "off". This one gets the storyline and characters "back on track".

Rowan is baaack! Last episode she was really struggling with her grief and vengeance, which is why I think her character was so off. But, we need to remember, even badasses can suffer depression, especially when the losses keep piling up.

This time she's back on her feet and full of salt and vinegar. Her relationship with Clive is deepening, her friendship with Genevieve is growing, her professional relationship with David is changing and becoming stronger as she adds to his duties, AND we get a new character, Star. Star is a magical "Kelpie dog", whatsit who assigned herself as Rowan's Keeper. I wish I could have one!

This book takes us from Las Vegas to London, back to the Keep, and then home again as she, Clive, and Genevieve track down Lyr's handler/enabler. Clive killed Lyr in the previous book, but they still need to find out who was pulling his strings. This lands them with a new enemy, and a few old ones, who need to be dealt with.

The storyline is tighter than last time and full of newly emerging and developing powers across the main characters.

We get a lot more of Genevieve, who is a powerful force in the Witch's Conclave Senate. I believe the author has future plans for a series for her character and I adore her. She and the Trick of Dust Devils strike a deal, and I believe a romance will eventually develop between her and Darius, the leader of the Trick. THAT'S going to be interesting.

There is SO much going on in this book, but the author pulls it together beautifully. I can't wait to see where all these various strings of fate and plans take us. Read this, you won't be sorry. It's a marvelous addition the Goddess with a Blade series!

I struggled with Blood and Blade, and I’m not sure why, I love this series. I was in a bit of a reading funk, not knowing exactly what I wanted to read, so that could be the cause. Either way, the first half of this book was just difficult for me. I knew the story, I knew the characters, but it was just blah for me. I kept having to put it down because it just wasn’t interesting. Even though things were happening, and the story was developing, it didn’t suck me in. Again that could just be the mindset I was in when I started. I really was in a funk and wasn’t sure of even the type of book I wanted to be reading.

I didn’t have that same problem with the last half of the book. That I really enjoyed and it finally sucked me in like I needed it too. I’m looking forward to what Rowan and Clive get into next, and what happens with some side characters after the events of Blood and Blade.

As Rowan and the gang edge ever closer to the big bad ugly that has been pulling strings. Having told the First about Clive's brothers and introduced him to Star her magical doggie sidekick, all he is interested in is getting the extended family around for Christmas!

Genevieve turns out to be more useful than even they both knew, she inherits a Trick and their leader Darius who tells her she is a salt witch.

I won't say who the baddie is but it was an interesting diversion!

So we are still attempting to uncover the identity of the big bad that was ultimately responsible for the death of Rowan's friends Martin, Thena, and Carey. At this point we know that vampires, witches, and humans are involved in this extreme conspiracy to rob individuals of their life force [power] and share it with the big bad.

Rowan, Genevieve, and Clive are investigating together as well as for their individual sects (Witches Conclave, Vampire Nation, and the Hunter Group). Secrets for each sect must be upheld, but at the same time information must be shared. Rowan is still dealing with the grief of losing those close to her. She is also struggling to not be overcome with fear that the same death is waiting for more of those that she loves i.e. her husband Clive, her valet David, her new dog Star, and her powerful Witch friend Genevieve.

I love the snarkiness of Rowan's character. I love the uptight British persona that is Clive. Mostly, I love that these characters will risk life and limb to protect those that they love and consider friend. Though, we do discover whom the big bad is I wonder if Guy was truly the head or just one of the heads of such a conspiracy. Definitely going to continue reading this series. I am interested to see how Rowan continues to evolve with Brigid's powers as well as with the continued exposure to Clive's blood.

This was a decent story. Unfortunately when I got it, I didn’t realize it was part of a series or how far down in the series was. That put me at a disadvantage for really liking this book. However, it did peak my interest enough that I would like to go back and read them all.

BLOOD AND BLADE was pretty entertaining- if you know the series and the characters. The plot and relationships all build off previous books, so if you are heading into this book not knowing the history, you can catch up with the recaps but it won't have the same oomph that the earlier books do. That being said, here Rowan and Clive head to London to investigate the memories and clues left behind by a dead vampire.

They are joined in this book by a new character, a familiar for Rowan, a dog named Star. The build is overall a bit slow, but it definitely picks up later. I really love Rowan and Clive's relationship which is really respectful and very much feels like equals (as it should). Both are powerful and they actively choose to stay together.

The plot features all sorts of supernatural awesome, and the best characters from past books make their appearances here. Overall, this was a fun, action-packed read but I would definitely recommend reading them in order.

Please note that I received a copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
This was a great book !
This book continues were the last book left off.
Rowan, Clive, and the gang continue to hunt the members of the Blood Front.
When Hunters are being killed off, Rowan will not stand for that.
With the addition of her familiar, Star, Rowan set out to deliver justice.
Like the previous books in the series, you can expect lots of actions, intrigues, etc...
Loved the characters + the storytelling !
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can't wait for the next book in this series.

This is the last book of the series, and I have to agree with other reviewers--it didn't feel like it! I enjoyed this series immensely, but my issues were with pacing in the first and last books. Things seemed to move rather slowly in this last book, making you wonder up until the end if all the unanswered questions will be resolved, and then BAM, it's over! It was so abrupt it startled me. I was not a fan of that ending, in part because it left you no time to wind down and get a sense for how the characters survive in the future. And there were one or two key questions left unanswered that really bothered me.

All of that said, I'd still recommend the series and book to friends!

Ok

Rowan is good at what she does. She helps people and Ruhr the wrongs. A lot of wrongs have been done to her and she is out to make them right. With her husband The Scion of North America Clive. With a few friends Genevieve, David and Star ( you will absolutely love) they get things done. Speaking of Genevieve there is more to come and the Tricks. Cannot wait. Will I re-read? No. Do I recommend? If you waited 4+ years for the series continuation like I did yes. Enjoy your reading.

Another baddie bites the dust.

It seemed like we waited forever for this book, but it was so worth it. Rowan and Clive are the perfect couple in the paranormal world. Their story is so full of colorful characters, plots and twists. It is so hard to put down until you finish the last scene. And again Rowan and company gets the bad guys put down.
Now I have to wait for the next book to continue the saga.

The great team killed the villain

I could not put the book down. Two in the morning I was still reading! Absolutely perfect ending! No one died this time but the villain and the other bad person. I am NOT going to spoil the ending by saying who or what the final bad person is! Fantastic molding of a great team of heroes. I can not wait to hear more from the dust devils especially the love affair between Darus and Genevieve.

Love love this book

Each book in this series builds upon the one before it, I love the way Rowan has grown through the series just as we grow as humans. The relationship between Rowan and Clive is so much fun, the love and snarkiness! I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Not much really happens in this one. It's almost all exposition and character building. That's ok, she does a nice job. The simplistic ending seems to suggest Dane's done with this arc and will try something new in the next book. I'll keep reading.
