The Spinsters Guild #4

A Foolish Wager

Rate this book
A Lady with a limp. A Gentleman blackmailed in a wager. Can anything good come of this?

Lady Amelia Ferguson cannot remember the day she fell from the apple tree in the orchard, but she has carried the consequences of it ever since.

Even though she is the daughter of the late Earl of Stockbridge, London society do not regard her as of any importance because of her limp. She hopes that Lady Smithton can help her in her dream of finding a kind, gentle, and accepting gentleman for a husband.

Lord Oliver Montague is a gentleman with both fortune and influence. Blackmailed into a wager he must take or lose his reputation in the ton, he is forced to court Lady Amelia and try to win the bet of making Lady Amelia fall in love with him and state those words aloud.

However, the moment he sees her, Oliver begins to fear he has made a dreadful mistake. But what can he do when so much is at stake?

This book is the fourth book of a series called The Spinsters Guild, a group of unusual ladies who are almost “on the shelf”. Can Lady Emily help them find their perfect match?

KU book. Too short too much plot, I got lost at one point. The trope is brilliant and yet.... It was kind of boring for me

Lady Amelia Ferguson is the daughter
of the late Earl of Stockbridge. Her uncle
is now the Earl. He wants her married this
season.
Lady Amelia fell out of a tree when she was
younger breaking her leg. This has left her
with a limp. Her leg pains her to this day.
The ton mocks her due to the limp failing
to notice her beauty and goodness beyond
the limp. The companion who chaperones
Amelia arranges for Amelia to meet with
Lady Emily Smithton who leads ‘The
Spinsters Guild’. The Guild helps single girls
who need help to find a suitable match.
Lord Oliver, Earl of Montague is a rake and
a cad. He picks ladies to toy with in order
to win bets then drops them with no regrets.
Lord Richardson is looking to make some
money by blackmailing Lord Oliver into
making him bet that he won’t be able to win
Lady Amelia’s heart.
The bet is already put the betting book!!!
But Lord Oliver finds that he abhors the way
the ton treats Lady Amelia. He finds her
sweet, innocent, smart and beautiful plus
trying so hard to fit into society.
But the blackmail bet is on.......
What will happen between Lord Oliver and
Lady Amelia?? Will he court her until she says
she cares after all he has learned about her??
Come along to the ton and see how Lord
Oliver handles his challenges and how the
Lady Amelia will handle the blackmailed Lord.
This is book # 4 in the Spinsters Guild. It can
be read as a stand-alone.
An enjoyable, recommended read.
I volunteered to read A Foolish Wager.

Known as a rogue, Oliver, Lord Montague, makes a play each season to sneak a kiss from debutantes and have affairs with widows or unhappy wives. There are always wagers on his conquests. Amelia broke her leg as a child when she fell out of a tree. The ton greets her with disparaging remarks. It is her second season and it will probably be as bad as her last. But her companion and a widow with influence in the ton, help her change her mind. As Oliver courts her, she has no idea he's being blackmailed for a past indiscretion with another lord's wife. The table is turned when Oliver professes his love to Amelia first, but abandons her because of the wager. It will take Oliver's honesty and the help of friends for him to win her heart. A sweet clean romance, if you ignore Oliver's past.

Not a Good Hero

I found myself frustrated with the hero in this book. The heroine is one who has suffered much in her life mostly because of one childhood mistake. She loved climbing trees as a child, but as we see and the prologue, one day she takes a misstep that ruins one of her legs forever. She had already had a strained relationship with her father, and this made it worse. After her father's death, her uncle very much wants to marry her off, but her first season was fraught with heartache and disappointment because not only could the ton not see beyond her disability, but she was openly ridiculed for it. What chance would she have to secure a gentleman?

For such a beleaguered heroine, I would love to have seen a completely swoon-worthy hero. But that is not what we got in this story. Instead, the hero is quite the rake, in previous Seasons only interested in women for what he could get from them—and this was wagered on in his gentlemen’s club. From maidens, he likes to steal a kiss, and from widows and unhappily married women, he likes much more. He and the heroine literally run into each other. They both find each other intriguing--though she isn’t beautiful or perfect enough for him—but he only pursues her when blackmailed by a man (with knowledge of one of his affairs with a married woman) who wishes to capitalize on a bet at White's so he can replenish his coffers. The wager he lays down is that the hero will not only kiss the heroine but will make her fall in love with him. The hero is not as introspective about this as one would hope, and I was actually disgusted when, after thinking about it for a bit, he decided that he had no choice but to go forth in the matter, even knowing it would break her heart. Ick. He goes into it knowing how bad it will be for her but still goes ahead. That is not hero material in my book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Lady Amelia Ferguson has always been mocked by the ton for her limp, her companion seeing this decide to help her by contacting Lady Smithton to help matters for her. On a ball that she goes as a manner to try to make her feel more self-confident, she meets Lord Oliver Montague and they become intrigued with each other, but everyone tells her to be cautious around him because he is reputed to be an arrogant man, so at first she decides to hear their counsils but after spending time with him sees him in a new light as a sweet men and becomes hopelessly in love with him. He start to feel the same love for her, but as he knows that the motive that made him aproach her in the beginning was selfish reasons, he is afraid to tell her the truth and lose her forever. Their love story was so sweet, when they started with their delarations of love i was wearing silly smiles. Loved this book, it warmed my heart.

Too slow and filled with mostly fluff

I could barely get past chapter 6 or 7, and at that point I just heavily skimmed to see if anything interesting or unexpected would happen. I appreciated this was a sweet story without explicit language or sex scenes, but it failed at being interesting. The pace was too slow and felt like the story was being held together (unsuccessfully) by lots of fluff and an overkill of attempts to explain how the characters are feeling/thinking. When one sentence would be enough to illustrate the point, the author uses a whole page, but does so in a way that serves to bog down the entire story. The most annoying part of the experience was how the dialogue was consistently interrupted by long paragraphs of repetitive inner turmoil. We get it, there's angst, but the more you try to spell it out like we readers are incapable of imagination or empathy, the less we can actually feel the angst and the more we lose interest in the characters altogether.

A Foolish Wager
Lord Montague behaved like a self-absorbed cad at the beginning, I know, surprising for a Lord, right? It doesn’t take long for him to straighten up, and that is not the usual way of historical books, so it was refreshing.
Amelia, her injury was off putting to most everyone in her acquaintance. She was quite literally the butt of the joke amongst the ton. I did wonder how her injury was still quite so painful so many years later. I chalked it up to ladies not being very active in that time.
I can’t say that I once rooted against Oliver and Amelia, even when he was acting like a snob at the beginning.
I look forward to the next installment in this series. I wonder how long Lord Havisham is going to be made to wait?

Loved this story of redemption!

Lady Amelia suffers from a limp due to a fall from a tree when she was younger. But it is not just pain from her leg but the scrutiny and cruelty from not only the ton but even her family. Lord Montague is known for loving and leaving but not ruining debutantes. There have been wagers won because of this and so he is blackmailed to uphold a wager involving Lady Amelia.
Because of this wager he gets to know her better and so he must decide if he is willing to take his punishments or hurt Lady Amelia? A sweet, short love story that made my heart hurt for Amelia.

What is that ole saying, what a web we weave when we practice to deceive. Or something like that. This is story is based on that ole saying. An innocent young lady with a limp, an infamous rake, a blackmailer. The rake is Lord Oliver, Earl of Montague. He had an illicit affair with a married woman, Lady Thornhill. If her husband were to find out the consequences would be devastating for him. He would be shunned from all polite society among other consequences. The blackmailer, Lord Davidson, was in desperate need of money and thought the easiest way to get it was to win a bet placed in White's bet book. Davidson set his sights on Oliver. He knew of his indiscretion with Lady Thornhill and threatened to reveal it to her husband. Davidson told him he had to win the love of a young lady who was mocked and treated with disdain and then walk away breaking her heart. Oliver did not want to do that but he also did not want to suffer at the hands of a powerful lord like Thornhill. He took the bet. His target to his shock was Lady Amelia. She is the daughter of the late Earl of Stockbridge and the niece of the current Earl, her uncle. Amelia broke her leg as a child and it left her with a limp. Her father was a mean man and never much cared for her. That continued throughout her life when her father was alive and now it continued with her uncle. Despite that she had a gentle heart, good morals, she was caring and kind. She is a beautiful young lady and would have been considered a diamond of the first water if it had not been for her limp. The ton was cruel and mocked her to her face. They had no compulsion in shaming her and treating her like she did not belong and letting her know she was not wanted. How she had the strength to live through that I do not know. She is stronger of character that she believes herself to be. I admire her character. For she lived each day full of misery, physical pain from her leg, an uncaring uncle and no hope for a suitor to marry her. Her companion and chaperone put Amelia in touch with Lady Smithton. If you have been reading the "Spinster's Guild" series you will remember she put it together to help young ladies who feel like outcasts from society but desperately needed help and guidance to navigate the ton successfully and perhaps find true love. Amelia was encouraged and over time let Lady Smithton assist her. Everything in Amelia's life was looking up until she met Oliver. She found him kind, attentive and attractive. But with his reputation she was warned by all to stay away and be wary of him. A very stimulating and poignant story of greed, self-preservation and the desire to be love. An excellent story and I do recommend. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Foolish Heart💕
You've Been Wrong💔 Before. Don't Be Wrong Anymore...

Amelia💃💋, a young debutante daughter of an Earl, has an instant and readily apparent handicap in her quest for a titled husband. As a child she fell from a 🌳tree and permanently injured one leg. She walks with pain and a noticeable limp.

Her father died and now her uncaring uncle is pushing her to marry👰. With no prospects, he hires Mrs Peters, as a companion and social guide, to find Amelia💃💋💔 a husband.

The companion finally introduces her to Some eligible men, but nothing comes from it. The women of the Ton whisper and make fun of Amelia💃💋 behind her back, so she has no women friends.

Amelia💃💋 meets Oliver🐺🍆⛲, the Earl of Montague, a well known rakehell. Her companion is mortified, but her Uncle approves, he just wants her married👰 off.

Montague🐺🍆⛲ has never had a real relationship with an eligible woman. He just steals a kiss or two, and moves on to a widow or even a married woman. His exploits are recorded in the betting book at White's, where he is famous.

Amelia💃💋 knows about none of that, but she is never to be left alone with him, her companion tells her.
Somehow, when Montague🐺🍆⛲ sees how Amelia💃💋 is being treated by the rest of the ton, he begins to see her as a real person with wants, needs, feelings, and great intellect. Her great talent of singing and playing the pianoforte🎹 mezmerises him!

Alas the bet.....forced onto Montague🐺🍆⛲ by a colleague, he must not only kiss Amelia💃💋, but get her to declare her 💘Love for him. He deeply regrets...

ARC Received from Booksprout🌱
I also got this ebook with KU.

I loved this book! It's an emotional read, and will probably make you shed a tear or two. Oliver🐺🍆⛲ finally grows up and is the reluctant cad, but it's too late. Can he really be honest and convince Amelia💃💋💔 his love💕 is true? What about the bet?
The book is just the right length to be read in an afternoon or an evening, and all the moving parts are there, with well rounded characters and an involved and emotional plot. This is a solid work by Regency Romance author Rose Pearson! 👍👍👍👍👍

This is romantic, entertaining and sweet. Amelia is a shy, naive and caring woman who the ton makes fun of because of a limp she got by breaking her leg when she was 12. Lady Smithton is an influential woman of the ton who has been helping some young ladies who are having issues meet eligible gentlemen. Oliver is a rake who likes to charm debutantes into letting him kiss them, and as soon as they do he moves on to another unlucky lady. When Oliver accidentally walks into Amelia and apologizes, he's blackmailed into "doing what he did last season", which he has given up doing. Then he finds out that the bet goes further than what he usually did, and he starts to feel bad about doing it. He finds that the more time he spends with her the more he likes her, and eventually falls in love, so he is torn about what to do. He can continue with the bet, and break her heart or he can end things, and be ruined. It takes him a long time to get a conscious. It's a sweet story in the end that I loved. Oliver turns into a really protective and respectful man.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

This was an enjoyable read. Due to a childhood accident Lady Amelia was left with a limp. This has caused her to be the subject of much derision from the ‘ton’. Her guardian has said that she must marry this season. This need brings her to Lady Smithton, who has decided to help Amelia find a suitable gentleman. Lord Oliver Montague does not fit the bill as he is a rogue and only looks for perfection. He has been blackmailed into taking part in a wager that concerns Amelia. I enjoyed the way Amelia and Oliver came to know each other and the way he behaved towards her. However, there is still the problem of the wager and can Amelia really trust him. It did make me wonder how the situation could be resolved and it had a very satisfying ending. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A story that tore at my heart with the heroine having a small disability that brought cruel judgement from society. Amelia had a small limp from breaking her leg as a youth and that is all anyone could see. Not the lovely girl she was inside and out, that truly needed someone to care about her. Her life had not been full of love.
When she meets Oliver, she is warned he is a rogue and to stay away. Unfortunately, he is just that or has been and is forced into a bet to kiss Amelia and have her declare she loved him.
But what happens when that cad actually sees her for more than what the Ton does? Will he break Amelias heart but win his bet?
A sweet story of just how much one can endure and know good can often arise when least expected...

With each addition this series just gets better and better!

A Foolish Wager is book 4 in Rose Pearson's Spinsters Guild series. So often in Regency Romance the people and period are romanticized and the problems of the era are glossed over. However, Rose Pearson with her Spinsters Guild series tackles the thorny question of what happens to women who are outside society's norm of beautiful and accomplished. A Foolish Wager is the story of another of the Spinsters Guild members transformation from hiding in the shadows to proudly facing down the naysayers to make a place for herself in society. It is a delightful tale of a young lady standing up for what she believes and loving whom she chooses. And once again the man she loves becomes a better person simply because he has come to know her.
Rose Pearson shows us another not so pretty side of Regency England and what could happen if a woman has friends and support to become the star she is meant to be. There is the happily ever after we demand in all our historical romances. Yet, in the tradition of the great Jane Austin, there is a lesson to be learned before true love can succeed!
I highly recommend you read A Foolish Wager! Rose Pearson does not disappoint!

A great read if forgiveness

All you ever wanted was to be accepted by the ton has been nothing but cruel to Lady Amelia. She has a bad limp due to a childhood accident and no one seems to be able to look pass it. So when Oliver starts playing attention to her she is flattered but wary. What is his game? Oliver knows that once the truth comes out about the bet he will lose her for good. Can he prove to Amelia that his feelings are genuine and that he knows that he doesn't deserve her? Will Amelia be able to forgive him? A great read.
Both likeable characters even though Oliver did an awful deed he was genuine in his apology.

Excellent Regency Novel

A Foolish Wager is my introduction to author Rose Pearson's Regency era novels. I'm impressed. The first quarter of the 19th century is my favorite historical era. In recent years, I've been disappointed in the obvious lack of research. That does not author to Ms. Pearson. Her knowledge of the manners and mores of that era indicates her depth of research. I especially appreciate that she did not give us the expected easy solution to the heroine's problem. I highly recommend A Foolish Wager

Lessons

Learning lessons is not easy especially when love is involved. Amelia the sweet lady who hurt h er leg as a child, she continues to pay for it as an adult. Parent cruelty and uncle. Well then then 'ton' is cruel too. One guy pays attention to her for herself. Not to make fun. There's a lesson hidden in there somewhere for them both. Read and find out if the gentlemen in question it's genuine or not. Very sweet romance.

A Fake Reforms.

My title for this review is the essence
if this lovely story.
Also there was no click this or go there.
The epilogue was right where it should have been. One after the end of the book.
I shall seek out the other books in the series because this book was a wonderful read.
I know each of you who read this book will be as stunned as I at the
terrible way for Ton treated people they considered beneath them.
How could they be so cruel to others?

Great Read

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the message of loving someone for who they are. I loved that Amelia was finally able to see that she is worth something even with a limp. But sadly that is all people see instead of the amazing person she is. I loved that Oliver saw past her limp and that he learned from his past and he owned up to the things he had done. Very good story that makes you think about your life and how you value and look at people

Amelia has a limp from an accident when she was twelve. When she started her first season last year the ton treated her cruelly. This is her second season and nothing is different until she meets Oliver. However he is not completely honest with her. A bet has been made and Oliver is being blackmailed to win the bet for an unscrupulous lord. But the more Oliver learns of Amelia the more he likes her. Now what does he do?

This had great potential, but it was completely ruined by not showing the reader exactly how the Hero changed. All we were shown is the one time he stood up for the heroine against two nasty people, but the rest is all off-page progress that I'm supposed to just accept. Hell no. The Hero was awful in the beginning and I was expecting to see a lot more redemption.

This was truly disappointing and I don't recommend it to anyone.

Had all the ingredients for what I was expecting.. but felt like too many corners were cut, and it fell short for me.. I guess I was hoping for higher tension and angst because there wasn't any spice. Maybe digging deeper into the emotional journey? But I do think this would be appropriate for teens looking to get into HR with this level angst/tention. But if you're looking for a big gut punch or groveling (that was NOT groveling) don't think this is it.

A rogue gets his comeuppance.

This book is about a rogue Lord who is taken down by a beautiful young lady who was injured as a child. The cruelty inflicted upon her by society as well as her father and uncle (while trying to marry her off), is overcome as she finds true love on her own.

Muttered murmurings

Once again, I spent a lot of my reading time paying more attention to the over-use of "murmur" throughout A Foolish Wager. The story of Oliver and Amelia is very sweet...everything a good romance is supposed to be. It's not Ms. Pearson's fault that I get caught up nit-picky details.

Flawless premise, but the execution seemed to be missing something. There was too much telling and not enough showing. It made it hard for me to buy into the romance, to be honest. Still, I love a disabled heroine and a secret wager. I’ll check the author’s other books for favorite tropes.

A marvelous historic romance!

Strong intelligent women are my hero’s. Men strong enough to recognize their flaws and set out to change their life are also among those I admire. Therefor the characters in this novel are ones I like to read about, thank you, Jack.
