Kilts and Quilts #8

Kilt in Scotland

Rate this book
**From a double RITA® Finalist and an award-winning author

The Kilts & Quilts saga continues with more than stitching and a love match. This time it’s mystery and murder…

In Scotland, the Gandiegow quilters are in an uproar when their favorite fictional quilters—the Buttermilk Guild—are killed off by a best-selling mystery author. Diana McKellen is called in by the publisher to fix this PR nightmare. It’s said, there’s no such thing as bad publicity, but Diana questions this long-standing notion when an editor is murdered at a book signing.

Detective Chief Inspector Rory Crannach has been called in to investigate. He has to interview all the suspects closely…including Diana McKellen. He finds it perplexing that he’s drawn to her, especially since Diana wants nothing to do with him. Her own father was an NYPD detective, who died in the line of duty. She has vowed to never make the same mistake her mother made…falling for a man of the law.

Despite Diana’s resolve, sparks fly between her and DCI Crannach. As the body count rises, they are both on the case to find the killer. But the path to the truth takes twists and turns, putting them both in mortal danger. Good thing the quilters of Gandiegow are there to help. To save the day, Rory and Diana must accept that love—in all its many shapes and forms—just might hold the answer.

Award-winning author Patience Griffin has been writing and sewing her whole life but didn’t discover her love of quilting until her late thirties. She decided the best way to acquire her first quilt was to make one for herself. At nearly the same time, she started commuting three and half hours a day for her dream engineering job. To pass the time on the long drive, she got hooked on audiobooks—especially books with love stories.

Within a couple of years, she was writing stories of her own. It was no surprise to her family and friends when she combined her love of quilting, her small town roots, and her obsession with Scottish romances into novels.

She has gained some recognition with her September 11th Story Quilt which has toured the country as the property of the Pentagon. She has a master's degree in nuclear engineering but spends her days writing stories about hearth and home, and dreaming about the fictional small town of Gandiegow, Scotland.

Don't get fooled when you start this book and think that you are reading the wrong series. You are in the right place. The book starts out in Glasgow but we end up back in our favorite Scotland village with our favorite Scottish characters. This was a good mix of both a mystery and romance. I enjoyed it to the end and was sad to see that I finished it so quickly.

A ewe dunnit mystery indeed! Even with Patience Griffin deep-sea diving into murder mystery mayhem, fans will smile, sigh, and laugh out loud as each page is turned in Kilt in Scotland! As mysteries go, Griffin has written one heck of a winner, winner chicken dinner🐔 Readers can expect to accuse the wrong character, pocket ambiguous clues, wade through romantic distractions (I enjoy those), and never fear, fans still need to duck for cover when Deydie, the broom wielding boss enters the room!

Kilts and Quilts' novels are invigorating to a person's soul. The characters are real, you feel their happiness, understand their reservations, empathize with their difficult pasts affecting present decisions, you will blush when they do something embarrassing, and groan when they say the wrong thing, but most importantly, Patience Griffin has created a community and her readers get to share in the camaraderie. I am never disappointed in a K & Q book.

*Note to author: If you ever think to kill off Deydie it better be because you are writing a series that takes place in Heaven and you need the old quilter and her broom to shake up the angelic authorities😇

Patience calls me one of the Founding Members of the Kilts & Quilts fan club. I've read them all and own a few which I purchased from Patience's Etsy account.

This is an amazing foray into a new look at our author's works. It starts off in a totally not comedic romance genre way. It's more of a Romantic Mystery type of book which I enjoyed immensely and hope to see more of.

Ya Gotta Read and Love it!!!

Another fantastic read

The characters in these books come to life on the pages. I always miss a night of sleep when I read one of these books because I can't put it down. Can't wait for the Alaska series.

Another great story

A fantastic ending to a great series. This has drama, danger, mystery, and murder most fowl. But also just an overall great read. I couldn't put it down I was intrigued with what's coming in the next chapters.

The author of the Buttermilk Guild has written ten novels and decides to end the series by killing off the members of the quilting group. The publishing company of the book series is on a tour of Scotland, along with the author and her sister, Marta and Tilly Dixon. A company publicist, Diana McKellen and a media person, Parker and crew are on the tour, trying to quell all the unpopular feedback that is being received on the end of the series.

Needless to say, all the quilters are up in arms over the quilters and the series being killed off. Bookshops are cancelling orders and even events. Diana knows she has to come up with a plan to continue the tour and sales. Her plan is not helped at all when a murder occurs at the first reading - the murder mirrors the murder in the first book of the series. Cancellations keep coming and Diana decides to move the tour to Gandiegow and hold a quilters retreat there.

When the first murder happens, Detective Chief Inspector Rory Crannach is called in to investigae. Of course, he needs to interview all the suspects, including Diana. They both are drawn to each other. Diana fights the attraction because her father was an NYPD detective who died in the line of duty. She does not want to repeat what happened to her mother when her father was killed.

Murders continue, all following the way the killings happened in the series, with the quilt of each mystery wrapped around the body. I was a bit surprised at the identity of the killer.

I enjoyed catching up with the characters from earlier books in this series. I wish this series could continue as I really enjoyed it.

I have now completed all of the novels in the Kilts and Quilts series. This is the only one that was really a "who done it" mystery, or as the cover says "A Ewe Dunnit Mystery".
I am not really a fan of mystery books, but wanted to complete the series. I am glad that I did. All of the regular people from the town of Gandiegow, Scotland are in the book, besides new characters introduced. The quilters in Gandiegow are angry that their favorite mystery author, 40 year old Marta Dixon, had suddenly ended their favorite mystery series about the Buttermilk Guild. In all actuality, her older sister, Tillie, had written all but the last book.
Diana McKellen is told to "fix" the publicity fiasco, and is called in. Murders involving the quilts and the accompanying books are beginning to take place. Detective Chief Inspector Rory Crannach has been called in to investigate. At the end of the book, I was very surprised to see who the murderer was, and her motive.

When the author of a popular murder mystery series about a quilters' group comes to Gandiegow people soon start dying as they do in the books and end up wrapped in a quilt. Diana, who works for the Three Seals publishing company as a fixer, falls in live with handsome police detective Rory. However, she is reluctant to advance their relationship because her father had been shot dead in the line of duty and her mother never fully recovered.

Bottomline: My fav of the "Kilts and Quilts" books! The murder mystery was pretty easy to figure out early on, but still a joy to read.

As far as Who-Dun-It books go, the mystery here was pretty simple but the characters and setting was so fun. I loved the slight spin on the K&Q books. This was the first one that was a mystery and not just a love story. So happy it included all the quilters though. Deydie and her broom are the highlight of my summer!!!! I love that old bat.

Loved it!! Couldn't put it down! I absolutely loved every second of this book! It was very clever, creative and interesting from beginning to end. While still intertwining a beautiful love story throughout.

I loved that this book was a little different from the other books in this series, but still the same, lovely heartwarming style. I sincerely hope she writes more books like this! I also hope she continues this wonderful series.

I have read others in this series and was interested in how a murder would fit in. I thought it was a fun book, but more of a romance (like the others) with murder mystery stuck in there. Some of the familiar characters from previous books, but you wouldn't need to read those to enjoy this one.

Really 3.5 for me. I sometimes get a bit tired of the romance aspect when the characters are constantly fighting the attraction.

Love the cover art on these books!!

Amazing Series

Diana’s and Rory’s time has come. The only obstacles are the murders. The book has you guessing who the killer is, but it wasn’t until near the end that my guess was correct. Highly recommend the entire series. I’m sad that I’ve finished them, as I feel I’m leaving my family in Gandiegow.

3.5 - I enjoyed some of the mystery elements of this book, but I didn't like that there was no denouement. The book ended so abruptly after doing an excellent job developing these new characters and their relationships. I hope she continues to write these books - I preferred the mix of romance and mystery.

I read this over the holidays and it was a great choice to relax and travel to Scotland for a light tale about quilters. So happy Patience has decided to write a mystery series and this is a great start.

Newest in the Gandiegow quilting circle books. Love the series with Scotland, kilts, quilting, and old friends to visit. Nice to start at the beginning of the series as lots of characters, like Deydie continue in each book.

It’s a slight change up from the previous kilts and quilts book. Still the same cast of characters. Still a romance involved. But with the addition of a cozy mystery. That changed it up a bit while all permanent characters remained true to their personalities.

Gave this a chance, and it was too predictable for me… as well as not enough spice. I thought I’d enjoy the romance along with the murder/mystery, but all the characters were just sort of “meh” (aside from the Gandiegow crew, whom i still love)

Another disappointment. Outsiders as the main characters and a murder mystery to boot. Should be a spin-off series instead of number 8 of the Kikts and Quilts.

I love this whole series and wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this one because it’s a mystery. Patience did a wonderful job of combining the characters we love from the series with a murder mystery. I normally guess the killer very early on in mysteries but she had me wondering until right before the end. The romance aspect kept in line with her other books and she gently reminded us of who all the characters were without having a blatant explaining and recap like other authors tend to do. I was sad to finish the book because I have to wait for more about Gandiegow, but I’m also looking forward to her Alaska series!

Another great book by Patience Griffin! So enjoy reading her books, can’t wait to start, and don’t want to finish knowing I’ll have to wait another year for her next book! I love the visuals of Scotland! Makes me want to drop everything, jump on a plane, and visit all of Scotland! I love the strong women Patience writes about and the gorgeous men with their insecurities too! Thanks Patience for another enjoyable read!

Enjoyed this book very much. Usually I guess the killer early on, but not this time. I loved the mix of romance and mystery. The ending was worth the wait.
