Ignacy Trzewiczek returns with a new volume of stories picked from his blog! Welcome back, please stay for the adventure and help us share this wonderful resource !
Quite a bit better than the first volume. It's still a collection of (mostly) unrelated blog posts, but in this volume, there's n active attempt to teach something, something I believe was missing from the first volume. I'm still not sure just how relevant the stories in this volume are for folks actually looking to publish board games as a whole, but there are a lot of useful tidbits buried in the various stories that may help shake loose some ideas about what/how to do something relating to game publishing in general, and board games specifically. Not being a big board game player myself, I haven't a clue how use the book as a whole is to wannabee publishers, but if nothing else, it's entertaining, and that's gotta be a win.
The first book was a wonderful read, providing an in-depth insight into the board game development process.
The second books fells... rushed and unfinished. The author only tells us a bit more about play-testing and the book ends - well not ends but switches to individual stories of other developers. These are nice, but make the books simply feel like a clip art collection of short stories.
If you like reading stories and anecdotes behind the scenes in the boardgame industry, then this book is for you! Ignacy (head of Portal Games) does an excellent job informing, and with a sense of humor, various personal stories and interactions with other designers and friends in the industry over the years. I need to read vol 1, now....and I hear a vol 3, is coming in the future!
Not quite as good, interesting or amusing as the first. Deserves 4 and a half stars, but goodreads doesn't let that be a thing. Still absolutely worth your time, and amusing with a few interesting things about board game design mixed in. Not so much from Ignacy himself this time, which is part of the reason for the lesser quality I think.
I guess I just started to like Ignacy because after the two previous books I really enjoyed this one. It sometimes feels weird that it is a direct copy of the blog entries, but apart from that I did not have any issues with the book.
Once again great insights into the process of board game design.
While this installment definitely was still entertaining, I felt like the first installment had more entries that were actually inspirational/informational. Nevertheless, I still liked it.
This is an excellent collection of Ignacy Trzewiczek's blogs covering several topics relevant to game design. As a bonus the second half of the book features guest articles from several famous game designers who provide their own insights on a variety of topics. If you have any interest in board game design, as well as playtesting, then this book will prove to be a very enjoyable read!
It's fine. There are a few notable inclusions from guest authors at the end of the book, particularly one titled "so you want to be a game designer?"
This one is more of the same from the first book. Feels shorter. Doesn't seem to have near as much content but still communicates the challenges of game design.
Like the first volume it is a good book on board game design, a blog reprinted as a book, and again with interesting entries from lots of leading game designers. Interesting insights on the design processes. Recommended.
