The sound that wakes her from sleep is unmistakable—someone is in their house. She listens as heavy footsteps start up the stairs, and as the bedroom door is flung open, she doesn’t even have time to scream…

Following a frantic emergency call in the middle of the night, Detective Jenna Alton arrives at a secluded family home to find the body of Lucas Robinson lying in a pool of his own blood in his bed. His wife Carol, shivering in shock, has just watched an intruder shoot her husband in cold blood.

As Jenna investigates the murder, she soon discovers that Lucas was having an affair. And when his mistress is also found strangled to death in the center of the small town, Jenna is convinced that the murderer is living amongst them.

When the killer escalates with a mass murder at a remote ranch on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls, Jenna knows for sure that she’s dealing with a murderer more twisted than any other she’s faced before.

As the town begins to fill with revelers for the annual Halloween festival, Jenna has to work fast to stop any more lives being taken. But as the killer always seems to be one step ahead of the investigation, has she finally met a murderer who can outsmart her?

Black Rock Falls at Halloween - what could possibly be scarier than that? This town, why would anybody live there? The body count just keeps rising, I am surprised that there is anybody left alive in this small town. This is book 8 with Kane and Alton trying to keep the peace and once again it is carnage all over town. How much can one small town take?

The cases roll into each other and the victims keep coming. Firstly the pair are called out to a home invasion that has ended in the murder of man lying next his wife. The wife calls 911 and is in serious shock. and so the hunt begins. As always it doesn't end there and this time the big guns of the FBI are called in to help as all signs point to a serial killer who has being running around the country for the last 20 years.

I hope that we see more from the FBI characters Jo and Ty. They brought a lot to the story and something a bit different from the usual characters. In Jo we see h=somebody other than Kane that Jenna can be friends with.

As always the ending with leave you breathless with so much going on you won't know if you are coming or going. Another great instalment and looking forward to more

It's middle of the night when Jenna Alton receives a call that someone has broken in and shot Lucas Robinson while he slept in his bed with his wife lying next to him. A black feather has been left at the scene. Then two bodies have been found in the woods. They've also been shot with feathers placed near by. There's a serial killer on the loose and Kane and Alton have to try and catch him before he kills anymore. There's also a cold case where a young mother and her son were murdered by her abusive husband whilst trying to escape. One of her sons managed to escape. Now some human bones have been discovered.

I love this series. It just gets better and better. The story is taking place around Halloween some perfect time for disguises. The killing spree continues and Kane and Alton have to work out who the killer is. We are introduced to teo new characters who are FBI Agents. Blake and Carter are here to assist Kane and Alton and they make a great addition to the team. I hope we meet them again in another book. The pace is fast and the action starts at the beginning. There's plenty of twists but the last one I never saw coming. A great addition to a fantastic series. This is the best book in the series so far.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author D.K. Hood for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Detective Jenna Alton, along with her team investigate the murder that started with a home invasion.

Before they can really sink their teeth into this killing, the killer escalates with a mass murder at a remote ranch on the outskirts of town.

As the investigation continues, they find many more cases spread through several states all bear the same manner of killing .... down to the black feather left at each scene.

As the town begins to fill with revelers for the annual Halloween festival, Jenna has to work fast to stop any more lives being taken.

Someone is wearing a mask .... and has his eye on Jenna.

Although 8th in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. I highly recommend starting at the beginning ... how Jenna and her team all wound up in the same place for various reasons is well worth reading ... especially as Jenna is not who she says she is. This crime fiction is well written, as are all the books in this series. The plot is tightly woven leading to an explosive unpredictable ending.

This one introduces two additional characters who appear to be able to help Jenna and her team with anything that comes up ..... I look forward to seeing more of them. Also a new character is Pumpkin, the cat with the orange eyes who seems to attach himself to Jenna. Wonder what Duke, the dog, will have to say about that.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

D.K. Hood demands all the reader has, without the promise of letting go from the opening pages of this book. In a story that tackles a number of issue, the author takes the reader on an adventure like no other and keeps the tension high, with a great deal of momentum building throughout the various twists and turns. What begins as an emergency call in the middle of the night soon snowballs and leaves the reader feeling gripped to each line, until the mystery comes together. Sheriff Jenna Alton, Deputy Dave Kane, and the rest of the team are pulled into the middle of it all, leaving only when things fall into place on the final pages of this well-crafted book. I could not ask for more, though D.K. Hood always delivers in this great addition to the series.

When an emergency call pierces the still night, Sheriff Jenna Alton is ready. She arrives at the scene, hoping that things will be swiftly handled, but the sight of Lucas Robinson laying in bed, surrounded by his own blood, is enough to raise her hackles. When his wife, Carol, is seen shivering in the corner and explaining that some random shooter committed the crime, Alton and her deputy, Dave Kane, realise that they have another case where the killer may be on the loose and ready to wreak havoc.

After commencing the investigation, Sheriff Alton learns that Lucas Robinson was having an affair, which is nothing too shocking to her. Robinson’s dalliances may have fuelled the need to ‘get him out’ once and for all. When the man’s mistress is later found murdered, Alton and Kane know that they have a murderer on their hands, likely seeking some form of revenge. All eyes turn to Carol Robinson. But there’s more to the story.

After a remote ranch is the scene of more bloodbath, Alton and Kane have their team attend, where they can be sure something is going on and that the killer is not from around here. The clues and the means of killing are unlike anything that either of them has seen since their days working for the feds, a time both have kept from the locals during their years of service in Black Rock Falls, Montana.

Asked to help explore a cold case as well, Alton and Kane have their hands full trying to keep the community calm and under control. They split their time as best as possible, it there is something niggling in their minds about the disappearance of a family, long thought dead, while the remaining son re-emerges on an indigenous reservation with no recollection.

With Halloween just around the corner and many visitors making their way to town for the festivities, Alton and Kane must devise a plan to capture the killer before more lives are lost, while also trying to piece together their cold case. However, the killer seems to be in the middle of the investigation, knowing the next move before it is done, forcing Alton and Kane to wonder if the killer is amongst them. A chilling tale by D.K. Hood that only adds to the greatness of the series.

D.K. Hood has kept me hooked from the opening book and I have not stepped back in the week I have been devouring these stories. The place of her narrative is surely one reason, as she weavers great writing inside a powerful topic. The strength of the writing is linked to the strong foundation it sets for the other elements to thrive, keeping the reader wondering until the final reveal in the closing pages of the book. I can see direction, purpose, and overall development with each chapter, as the story has a clear trajectory towards a final a chilling determination.

Evolving character development leaves series fans impressed with how things have come to pass and where they might be headed. Hood knows how to spin a backstory and keep it coming, as she provides strong characters who have much to say. Alton and Kane continue to play front and centre roles in the development area, providing the reader with something on which they can rely whenever they open a new book. I can hope that there will be some great development in the coming novels, as some portions of their lives remain under developed to date. Hood never seems to shirk on this responsibility and I can only hope that more is soon to come.

A strong plot is supported by repeated twists to keep the reader on their toes. I can see a great deal happening in this piece related to story arcs from their past and threads left for future ideas. Hood weaves her story so well that the reader cannot help but want to know more as they manage the details of this piece repeatedly and effectively. This series has pulled me in from the opening pages and I still cannot read enough. I hope to see much for Jenna Alton and Dave Kane soon, as Hood keeps providing the reader with more to enjoy, never tiring of her craft

Kudos, Madam Hood, for making this fun while also keeping the story from going stale.

Her Broken Wings is the eighth instalment in the Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane series set in Black Rock Falls, Montana, however, it is not necessary to have read any of the preceding books to enjoy this one. When Lucas Robinson is shot at point-blank range is his sleep by an intruder his wife Carol, who had been lying beside him in bed, is almost paralysed by fear but manages to take cover under the same bed. She later darts down the stairs, hiding in a cupboard and calls the police in hysterics. Jenna is dubious of her story and suspects she is somehow involved yet all of their forensics back up that she was in bed beside him when he was brutally offed. As they examine the scene they find a black feather in Lucas’s blood and it's clear it is a calling card when more bodies start to drop accompanied by the same black feather. It is beginning to look like Black Rock Falls has become the hunting ground for a serial killer once again.

Each of the eight instalments has been incredibly gripping, yet there was something extra addictive and captivating about Her Broken Wings. The action is hard-hitting, the pace rapid, and the twists and turns plentiful. The writing is straightforward, which makes a welcome change from those trying to pack their narrative with unnecessary verbiage, and the story unravels in a linear and logical manner from beginning to end. It's high-octane and palpably tense from the get-go with the most dangerous, violent and merciless murderer to date; it very much appealed to me that the killer was well-versed in forensics and due to this it was going to much more difficult to collar him. You are given little time to breathe between all of the thrills and you feverishly turn the pages until the completely unexpected ending hits you like a bolt from the blue. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Bookouture for an ARC.

They're back! They're back! They're back!!

Jenna, Kane, Wolfe, and Rowley - the delicious police team from Black falls were back in their places when a home invasion killed the husband and left the wife shocked. And things kept on rolling with a fervent pitch at every incident. Jenna and team were kept completely bamboozled right uptil the end.

I have read nearly all books by the author D. K. Hood, and every time I would think she couldn't surpass this, she did. There was something so loving in my gaze when it fell on one of my most favorite team. I loved how they worked like a well oiled machine. The attention to detail in every part of the book made me fall more in love and awe at Ms. Hood's writing. She was so clear and precise.

I lived that the author made the book challenging to the police team to solve. The criminals were getting nastier and more cunning, and now it felt that the were deliberately baiting Sheriff Jenna Black. I loved how Jenna kicked their asses even after a rocky start or two or three, but they did manage to get their perps at great cost to themselves.

Each book of the author is a challenge, and the Broken Wings in this gave wings to my reading and I could finish it at one sitting. A fantastic police procedural from my favorite team.

Definitely a 4+⭐️ read.
It’s Halloween in Black Rock Falls and the bodies are stacking up! I love the Kane and Alton. Every book in the series has held my attention. Yes, I had the killer figured out early on but it didn’t stop me from enjoying it. Her Broken Wings has not only brought back my favorite characters, but several have been added that I really like, especially Pumpkin the cat. The are two new characters introduced from another close small mountain town FBI office that help with solving the murders and are strong enough to build a new series around (which would be nice).

Another phenomenal instalment to this fabulous series. One of my favourites. I love the new characters and hope we see them in future books. There are many murders to solve. Some scenes had my heart threatening to burst out of my chest. A very scary Halloween in Black Rock Falls. Book 9 can't come fast enough for me. I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Her Broken Wings, the eighth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane of the Blackwater Falls, Montana Sheriff’s Department.

Carol Robinson wakes to hear an intruder in her house, hears gunshots and her husband is shot dead as she lies beside him. Unfortunately this is only the start of the killings so the team are facing another serial killer in their small town.

I enjoyed Her Broken Wings which is another high octane read with a violent killer and a creepy atmosphere. The novel follows the usual formula with the narrative told from Jenna’s point of view with occasional switches to the unnamed killer and other relevant characters. The killer is cold blooded, merciless and extremely forensically aware so it’s a battle to catch him. Fortunately the team is experienced and have a newly formed local(ish) FBI team to call on for help. It should be noted that some of the crimes are fairly gruesome and while not lingered on gratuitously they might give the more faint hearted pause for thought.

I really liked the efforts to catch the killer as they are tense, urgent and atmospheric. The team’s jumpiness leaps off the page and infects the reader. I’m glad no one caught me unaware when reading it as I would have screamed! The novel is also fast moving with incident after incident and little time to draw breath and when they do it’s a big mistake.

The solution was interesting in that I didn’t see it coming although I guessed that they were barking up the wrong tree with their initial suspects, which is not an unlikely scenario in crime fiction. The explanation for it all pushes my credulity but the author does a good job of explaining it. It depends on where you stand on the issue whether you will find it likely or not.

I have come to really like the team at serial killer central and there is a brief explanation in the novel as to why this is the case. David Kane, Jenna Alton and ME Shane Wolfe are all former federal law enforcement officers relocated to Blackwater Falls to hide them. As a result they are the best qualified and experienced Sheriff’s officers in the country. The author has decided to supplement this wealth of knowledge by adding two FBI agents to the roster, Jo Blake and Ty Carter, again experienced, smart agents. I’m wondering how the author will top this killer and if we will see the FBI agents again. It would be a shame not to as, after a rocky start, they fit in well and are on their way to becoming fast friends. I like the sense of camaraderie and all in it together mindset that plays out in this series.

Her Broken Wings is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Her Broken Wings by D.K. Hoodis the 8th in the Detectives Kane and Alton series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background:    (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)
Former DEA, Jenna Alton is now the Sheriff in Black Rock Falls, Montana.  Her past is a secret.  Deputy David Kane's background is also a secret.  He was a Special Forces sharpshooter.  Then there is  Forensic Scientist Shane Wolfe, who is not only a Medical Examiner with amazing computer skills, he used to be Kane’s handler. So, with a few other deputies, Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small Black Rock Falls town, which seems to have more murders than a small town should.

My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)

Lucas Robinson was shot while sleeping next to his wife.  He was the first of a series of strange murders that are happening in Black Rock Falls.  Things escalate, and on Wolfe's recommendation, they call in FBI Agents Jo Blake and Ty Carter.  Jo is sure that the perpetrator is a serial killer that has evaded the FBI for a few years.

Meanwhile,  Atohi's cousin has returned to the reservation, and he is not the man he once was.  Brad Kelly left the reservation when he was 18.  Upon finding out that his father was dead, Brad's memory of the abuse his family suffered returned, so he came back.  He remembers the night that his mother and brother were murdered by his father, and he alone made it to the reserve.  He remembers that the police did nothing.  He is quick to anger, and insists that their bodies be located and given a proper burial, but he has little respect for the police, or anyone else.

As the body count rises, Jenna is thankful for the extra assistance.

My Opinions:

I like the addition of the FBI agents, and hope they return in future books.

The plot was interesting and dealt with both mental health issues and physical abuse.  The author handled these topics well.  There was a lot of action, which resulted in a quick read.  As well, the identity of the perpetrator was a surprise, so that was good.

I have the same problems with all of the books in the series.  The first is the romantic relationship between Jenna and Dave, which often lacks professionalism.  The second was a little less pronounced in this book, which is the fact that Jenna often plays second fiddle to Dave.  In this one, she was more of a leader.  However, again Jenna was "amazed by his knowledge".  Comments like that continue to exasperate me.

So, even though I have some issues with the characters, the plots always make up for it, and I will continue to be entertained by this series.

On another note.  The title "her broken wings" seems like an after-thought at the end of the story.  It's a good name for a shelter,  but I don't feel it was tied in sufficiently to the story.

It seems that Black Rock Falls, Montana, must be a sociopathic serial killer magnet and, this time at Halloween, another has found his way to the small town by the mountains. The bodies are coming fast and furious and Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane enlist the help of FBI operatives in a nearby town to help them nab this one known as the Chamelon Killer. Lots of grisly murders and a host of suspects keep the detectives busy. This 8th book in the series has lots of action and many different characters to keep readers fully engaged and rapidly turning the pages. Even though the outcome is predictable, it was an entertaining police procedural and crime thriller.

I've read all the previous books in the series and will continue to do so. Kane and Alton have a work partnership as well as an obvious personal connection. Their relationship is a co-dependency and they certainly have plenty to do in "Serial Killer Central" as the crime rate in Black Rock Falls is off the charts!

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review.

This book is filled with hard hitting action and delicious surprises. Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane sure have their hands full in this, the latest book from the incredible author D.K. Hood. I simply adore Ms. Hood's writing. Her writing is straightforward and uncomplicated. Her plotting makes perfect sense and one event follows another in a strictly logical manner. Her characters are realistic and likable – for the most part. Jenna's team is incredible. They work very well together and like one another. I like the way that sufficient information is given about their backgrounds to flesh them out as people, but not so much information is given to detract from the story line.

Lucas Robinson is shot in his sleep while his wife lies beside him. Hysterical, she hides under the bed then runs downstairs and hiding in a closet calls the police. Jenna is suspicious of her, but she is not making much sense. Examining the scene, they find a black feather in Lucas' blood. While the sheriff and her deputies are trying to make sense out of Lucas' murder, all hell breaks loose. They learn that Lucas had a girlfriend and he, as an investment advisor, had some very unhappy customers.

Meanwhile more murders occur. More black feathers. Does the little Montana mountain town of Black Rock Falls have a serial killer running around? Again?

Hold on to your hats, readers, for the surprise ending!

I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this absolutely great book for me to read, enjoy and review.

So far, I have only read one of the other books in this fabulous series - Break the Silence - and now this one, Her Broken Wings. Even so, I consider myself qualified enough to say that D.K. Hood is a remarkable writer, and this novel is a work of brilliance!

In Her Broken Wings, Detective Jenna Alton arrives at a secluded family home to find Carol Robinson shivering in shock, having just witnessed an intruder shoot her husband Lucas in cold blood. As Jenna and her team begin their investigation, they find a black feather which they believe is a mark of the killer(s) presence, as when further bodies are discovered, more black feathers are left at the murder scenes. With Black Rock Falls starting to resemble a mass murder zone, Jenna knows for sure that she’s dealing with perpetrator(s) more twisted than any other she’s ever faced before. As the town begins to fill with revellers for the annual Halloween festival, Jenna has to work quickly to prevent any more lives from being taken. But as the killer always seems to be one step ahead of the investigation, has she finally met a murderer who can outwit her?

Sheriff Jenna Alton makes a very likeable detective although a little short on inspiration and self-belief. Her deputy, David Kane is a former Special Forces marksman with exceptional profiling skills.

This novel was a fantastic, electrifying and solid police procedural and a well-balanced thriller that had me glued to the pages. I didn't want to put it down as I was desperate to know the outcome of the story. Though Black Rock Falls is a small place, Jenna and her team were still left with a lot of suspects to chase in a very tangled web of mystery. This really was a spectacular crime-thriller that grabbed me hook, line and sinker. The team embarked on an exciting and exhilarating mission to find the perpetrator, calling in the FBI to help, in the form of experienced, smart agents Jo Blake and Ty Carter. All the time the tension was being ratcheted up a notch as D. K. Hood smacked me with some captivating misdirection and planted a few red herrings. The writing flowed effortlessly with a swift pace as it delved into a host of themes all tackled, in my opinion, with care and precision.

I will be seeking out the first six instalments of this masterful series, and I now have a copy of book #1, Don't Tell a Soul. Her Broken Wings is a brilliant, nail-biting and confidently recommended crime-thriller, so don't miss out!

I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my request, from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Woohoo, it’s PUBLICATION DAY!!!! What a better way for me to celebrate this than share my review of this book and do check out Claire at A Knight Reads as she is with me today!
I know I say this every time but please can I have more Rowley! There was just nowhere near enough of him this time!! But I can forgive Ms Hood just this once mind you because I did enjoy the new FBI support team in Jo Blake and Ty Carter, two new unknown quantities and it felt like they fitted in straight away. What is also nice, it widens the net for support both professionally and as a friendship for all members. It’s pretty isolated being Jenna, Kane and Shane but they have always had each other. Whether the newbies will be invited to know their secrets will be one thing but until then, it feels like friends in our little family and I love this!
And we have new animals!! Zorro is Ty’s dog, again I hope we have more of him! But we have a cat, I am so happy about this, plus I love its name -Pumpkin! I love this because it’s my mini me’s nickname so this did make me smile! Plus this cat was badass!
Well, it’s near Halloween so it must be the hunting season in Black Rock Falls, by this I mean for my favourite duo Jenna and Kane. This time it appears that serial killers really do flock to the town to try and outwit Jenna, seriously when will they learn!
This is most definitely the darkest and twisty one in the series! An ending I didn’t see coming, brutal killings and so much suspense it was just palpable. How Hood gets her inspiration I will never know…in fact, maybe I don’t want to know!
Straight from the opening page, it was horrific and, and yes my favourite word, brutal! I really did not see how the beginning could ever relate to a home invader and then on to the other deaths. But once the thread is picked the web unravels and well we still don’t see! This time I felt it wasn’t until Ms Hood decided it was time to let us know because even once we got the bad guy, we were left with a lot of pondering. Man, that was good!
Already it’s been teased that book 9 will be darker, now I am a bit unnerved by this, because of 8 is the darkest yet….just how much darker are we talking! I want Jenna and Kane and the team to enjoy their skiing and their time away, let’s not ruin that just yet, Ah?
There are a whole host of themes running through this book and they are all tackled, in my opinion, with care and precision. The most interesting of them all, I felt could have had more focus, was the one surrounding the killer. What that is, well I can’t say, but it fascinates me for sure! If you want to know, go get a copy of the book!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this outing, yes the deaths are way more, I can’t say brutal again, rough and inhuman (how do you like that!!). We are left breathless at times watching the team, being watched, whilst solving the murders, it’s just one big game! I devoured this book, just like I do with all the books and now I am left feeling bereft as I have to wait for book 9! Can I sulk for a bit now?!

It's raining bodies in Black Rock Falls, Montana.

Detective Jenna Alton arrives at a secluded home to find the body of Lucas Robinson in bed, lying in a pool of his own blood. His wife, Carol, claims she watched an intruder shoot Lucas in cold blood, but was unable to see the killer. Soon Lucas's mistress is found strangled to death in the center of the small town. Then the killer escalates with a mass murder at a remote ranch on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls, setting up a disturbingly grotesque scene where the ranch was preparing for Halloween.

The opening of Her Broken Wings is chillingly written, and the book is fairly gruesome. I liked Jenna, Deputy Kane, and the medical examiner. Their interaction is interesting and I enjoyed following the case up until the climax. The characters have substantial history which is only hinted at in this book. Duke, Depute Kane's rescue dog, is wonderful. The climax wasn't quite satisfying to me, but I'll put my concerns with that in the spoilers below.

At one point, the term "savage" is used to describe a Native American male. That term should never be used in relation to a Native American.

Content Warnings: SPOILER Domestic violence; Death of a child; Torture; Dissociative identity disorder (DID), but I'm not sure the portrayal works at the end. It sounds like the killer realizes they used disguises to get close to victims, but I thought with DID individuals don't believe they're putting on a disguise, they fully believe they are that person. The killer does change voices. I'm no expert and could absolutely be wrong. Perhaps people with DID have more conscious control over the condition than I, as a layperson, am aware. Additionally, psych professionals in the book use the term "crazy," which doesn't seem professional. They also use the term "normal" which rings false - perhaps "not dangerous" would have worked better in context. END SPOILERS

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC. The opinions in this review are honest and my own.

I absolutely love this series and reading this book was like catching up with old friends.
Kane and Alton have their hands full with multiple murders so call in the help of the local FBI which is Jo and Carter.
They get off to an awkward start but soon become great allies and both groups have the aim of finding the killer, before they strike again.
The scene they come across together is pretty gruesome and when they realise a young waitress was used as bait to get the other victims closer, they’re all completely shocked.
Jenna and the team work tirelessly to try and find the killer and just when they think they’ve got it all wrapped up, the unthinkable happens.
This is a fantastic read that had me hooked from the first few pages and as for the final few chapters - I loved them!
If you’ve not read this series you really don’t know what you’re missing.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Best one in the series thus far! Book 8 in the Alton and Kane series I must say don't bother picking this one up unless you have read book 1 to 7 prior because you will be super lost.

It's Halloween and ofcourse no holiday goes without a murder in black water falls. When a man is killed in his bed next to his wife Jenna and her team are called to the scene Jenna suspects there's more to the story but as more bodies start stacking up she has to question her original git reaction

Honestly DK Hood has become one of my top 5 crime writers and its not even top 5 because I love all 5 equally. The way he writes is Just genius and I struggle not to get emotionally wrapped up with each characters side storylines.
In this installment we get to meet 2 FBI agents who are part of a new field office 3 hours away and are called in to help solve the case. I already love both characters and was sad to see they don't have their own spin off series but I'm hopeful they will have a return presence in black water falls.

This killer is fascinating as they have different methods of killing and appear to enjoy putting on grand displays. At points I found myself trying very hard not to imagine the displays as they are as usual described vividly and helped the imagination. I did however guess the killer and saw the twists coming bur ir was still great to read them unfold. I do worry that I guess the killers do quickly and so often either I should write crime or see a doctor ha.

As per another amazing installment in the series. Each character defilement is subtle but gray to read I love the way they are like a mini family and I must say this has been the best and my favourite in the series so far although I have another 5 to read so this can change. Easy peasy 5 stars DK Hood never stop writing. ✋

It sems ages since the last D.K.Hood book and wh#en this bad boy appeared in my #Netgalley account I was over the moon. I've read this series from the start beginning with Don't Tell A Soul. We are at number 8 in the Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane series set in Blackwater Falls, Montana and in my humble opinion it is equally as good as the rest, all I ask is that we don't have to wait quite so long for numbers 9, 10 and 11, hint hint. I've said it before and I'll say it again I wouldn't move to Blackrock Falls for all the tea in China and anyone who does needs their bumps felt.

They have a perpetrator of the sickest kind and the team really have their hands full trying to catch him especially as he has seems to have an lot of forensic making this a something of a nightmare for them. He breaks into a house and manages to murder a man whist leaving his wife with his brains all over her. He's still in the house and she hides in a closet while she waits for the police to arrive. Jenna is more than a little suspicious of her. There's a black feather on the first victims body which is the first and most significant clue, although initially this is disregarded by Jenna and the gang.

As always the weather is absolutely atrocious and to make matters worse its Halloween giving this murderer excellent cover to move around Blackrock falls undetected. With bodies dropping like flies this time they appear to need a little help so in Her Broken Wings we meet a few new characters Jo Baker and Ty Carter (who I initially thought that I wouldn't like him but he did grow on me towards the end) they did seem to gel well with Webber, Wolfe and the adorable Maggie. I really hope that we see more of them in the next books.

I enjoyed learning more background information about the team but sadly no romance between Jenna and Dave as yet. I'm really beginning to feel like that the author is enjoying teasing us readers with the almost Ross and Rachel type scenarios. Please put me out of my misery and let them get together as they so obviously care deeply for each other in more than just a work colleague style.

I have to be honest and say that at this moment in time D.K. Hood is one of the few American authors that I read and thoroughly enjoy, my preferred genre is mostly British crime but these ae just far too blinking good to resist. This is a very highly recommended American police procedural, with short sharp easy to read chapters making you turn the pages at a rate of noughts until suddenly its finished. My only issue is that the books themselves aren't long enough and I know that authors work hard writing for our pleasure but I'm such a #GreedyBookworm that I'm always disappointed to get to the end.

Read for an honest review. Thank you Ms Hood, Bookouture and Netgalley

Her Broken Wings is book eight in the Detectives Kane and Alton series by D. K. Hood. One night, Sheriff Alton caught an emergency call from Carol Robinson, and when she arrived at the secluded family home, Lucas Robinson was dead and his wife Carol in shock. During the investigation of Lucas Robinson's murder, Sheriff Alton found out that he was having an affair. However, Sheriff Alton realised there was a murder in her town after a string of murders included Lucas Robinson's mistress. The readers of Her Broken Wings will continue to follow Sheriff Alton and Depty David Kane's investigation to discover what happens.

I love reading books in this series, and Her Broken Wings kept up the tradition. I enjoy how D. K Hood placed the twists and turns in the ploy of this book. I engaged with the story and the characters of D. K. Hood from the beginning, and it continued to the end. I had trouble putting this book down. I love D. K. Hood's portrayal of the characters and how they intertwine with each other throughout this book. Her Broken Wings was well-written and researched by D. K. Hood. I like D. K. Hood's description of the settings of Her Broken Wings, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The readers of Her Broken Wings will learn about dissociative Identity Disorder and how it affects the suffer and everyone around them. Also, the readers of Her Broken Wings will understand the problems families have in getting medicine and health care when they have no health benefits.

I recommend this book.

Oh my, oh my God… This is another cracking story!!!

In my opinion this author really deserves the title of Queen of Suspense. The way she creates an atmosphere is amazing! She had me listening for noises, looking over my shoulder or out the window … I totally had the feeling someone was going to sneak up on me too. Jeezes, that truely is the creepiest thing, but it’s oh so utterly fantastic.

Jenna and her team are great. They always look out for each other and you just have to love Wolfe and Kane. (and Duke of course 🙂 )

She had chills running down my spine and I just could not stop reading. If I’m honest, I was not only reading, I felt like I became part of the story.

Incredibly, mind-blowingly brilliant! 5 stars

Thank you, D.K. Hood and Bookouture

Thanks again to the publisher and #NetGalley - and especially #DKHood for the opportunity to read "Her Broken Wings" in return for a fair and honest review.

Whew! First of all, I cannot believe we're up to Book 8 in the Kane & Alton series. It seems like only yesterday that we were getting to know Jenna and Dave as they teamed up in Black Rock Falls and hunted their first killer; how time has flown.

Welcome back to Black Rock Falls - Serial Killer Capital of the World (and not a title that they enjoy having, but one that we're very glad of as it brings us tale after tale featuring Alton, Kane, Wolfe, Webber, Maggie, and all the denizens of the town) where Mrs. Robinson - an inspired character name if ever there was - wakes up to find her husband's brains scattered all over their bed and the killer still in the house. When she finally manages to call 911, the hunt for the killer begins.

Along the way, more and more bodies are added to the count [They're dropping like flies!] and Dave and Jenna have teamed up with Jo Baker and Ty Carter from Snakeskin Gully (great placename); they're both FBI, and she's one of the best Behavioral Analysts in the business, exiled due to her husband's taking up with her former boss at the FBI. It seems like the Chameleon Killer has moved into their neck of the woods.

At breakneck speed the story jogs along and there's plenty of action for the adrenaline junkie. But, there's a lot of depth to the story, too. I particularly enjoyed the discussions regarding Dissociative Personality Disorder (DPD) or Dissociative Indentity Disorder (DID) as it's sometimes called. Great research by Ms, Hood to add verisimilitude to the murderer.

Thanks, also, for the twist. Never saw it coming!

Recommended. Highly recommended.

Carol Robinson is lying in bed next to her sleeping husband, Lucas, when an intruder comes into the bedroom and shoots him dead. After hiding for a while Caroline finally calls 911. Sheriff Jenna Alton suspect Carol but all the tests back up her story of being next to Lucas when he died. Then two more bodies are discovered in a near by forest. Two young men have been shot and there’s a link to Lucas’ murder - a black feather left at the scene. With an increasing body count, an angry young man searching for his mother’s body after 20 years and a growing list of suspects. Jenna and her Deputy Dave Kane have their work cut out. Help is on hand from an FBI agent known to Wolfe the ME who has recently moved to a nearby town.

Another installment of the Alton & Kane series that I couldn’t put down. I’ve read them all and they just keep getting better. Love this series.

Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and D K Hood for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

Wow what a great read with bodies popping up left right and centre!

The recipe :
1 x psychopath with dissociative identity disorder
1 x no nonsense taking sheriff Jenna Alton
1 x deputy David Kane
1 x cheating husband to set it off
1 x drunk, woman beating scum of the earth

Method:
Mix all together with seasoning of stupid and jealous people

Result:
Brilliant and twisted story with some curveballs that will leave you with a mouth hanging open!

Highly recommended!!

Thank you to Netgally and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is book 8 in a series, and I was not sure if it would read ok as a stand alone. While I didn't really understand Mane and Jennas relationship overall it reads well as a.stand alone. This is my first time reading this series and author. Very complicated and a challenging mystery. Good read. 3.5 stars.

D.K Hood sure knows how to start a book with a bang and keep the momentum going till the very end. Following her pattern of dark, creepy prologues that compel you to keep reading (albeit with the lights on) Her Broken Wings makes for a fantastic, twisty & suspenseful read! This series has proved to be a strong and gripping police procedural with a strong mix of suspense & thrill. While I agree with some, that the small-town characters with their fancy equipment & Black Rock Falls being a magnet for psychos seem unbelievable, I lap it all up, because that's how much I enjoy the writing!

When Rowley is called to the scene of a crime in the middle of the night, he discovers the bloodied body of Lucas Robinson lying in his own bed. His wife Carol, in shock, is found hiding in a broom closet nearby. Incoherent and almost feral, Carol cannot give the police a full statement. Examining the murder scene, Jenna concludes with Wolfe & Kane that this is the work of a trained professional. But who would want to kill plain old Lucas? Digging deeper Jenna discovers links to other people who are killed in the same cold manner. When the killer escalates with a mass murder at a remote ranch on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls, Jenna knows for sure that she’s dealing with a murderer more twisted than any other she’s faced before.

I like the characters in this series and with the addition of two more potential recurring characters, this series has gotten more interesting! Both characters are interesting and I'm excited to see what the author will have in store for them. The plot was as usual - amazing! This one was a page-turner! While there is a small part in the back of my brain that says it's highly unusual for a small town to see such a large number of serial killers waltz in and out, I ignore that voice and continue to enjoy reading this deeply dark & disturbing series.

Thank You, NetGalley, Bookouture & D. K. Hood for an arc!

4.25⭐

Detectives Kane and Alton are back with another cracking read. That moves in so many directions, and really keeps you guessing, as the team hunt for a serial killer who seems to kill with precision one minute and total abandon the next.

And even though I had a couple of ideas as to who the killer was, which in the end turned out to be both right and wrong it was great to read. Especially as new characters are introduced and with plenty of suspense and macabre crime scenes to enjoy I was hooked throughout; and I'm really looking forward to reading book nine.

Would recommend.

Black Rock Falls, quite possibly the serial killer capital of the world, is getting ready for Halloween so everything must be just fine, right? Umm nope! When the local sheriff's office receives a desperate call from a woman living on the outskirts of town they have no idea just how dangerous things are about to get. As the body count rises Sheriff Jenna Alton, partner Deputy Dave Kane, and ME Shane Wolfe find themselves up against an adversary wanted across the country, can they stop the killings before he moves on again, and his victim count keeps rising?

This is a wonderful series with great characters, inventive storylines and a familiarity which welcomes you in each time you begin a new book. There is a theme running through all the novels but no major spoilers to prevent you starting with any of the eight books released so far. Obviously all good things must come to an end but I hope there will be a few more outings for this trio before that happens.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys this series the author or wants a first class read over a number of novels.

Absolutely terrific read. Strong, smart group of characters who respect and care about each other (Kane move a little faster please). The dogs play their part in their own way to round out our Ohana. Many twists with this killer that kept me reading until I fell sake
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc
