মাঝে মাঝেই বিশেষ কোন অঞ্চল নিয়ে অদম্য কৌতুহল জেগে ওঠে। হতে পারে ভূমধ্য সাগর বা ককেশাস পর্বত, সাইবেরিয়ার হিম বা আমাজন জংগল - কিন্তু এই ভূত যখন মাথায় চাপে তখন সত্যি বিহ্বল হয়ে যাই, শয়নে স্বপনে আমার মস্তিস্ক ছেয়ে থাকে, মনে হয় ওর রূপ রস গন্ধ গায়ে মাখি, ভেতর থেকে একদম চেটেপুটে খাই। সাধারণত সেই বিষয় নিয়ে আধডজনের মত বই পড়ে ফেললে জ্বর কমতে শুরু করে, হোক গল্প বা নভেল বা ইতিহাস। তবে ব্যাধি প্রকট হয়ে দাঁড়ালে একমাত্র প্রতিষেধক বাকি থাকে বাস্তবে ভ্রমণ।
ক্যারিবিয়ান দ্বীপপুঞ্জ নিয়ে নেশা অনেকদিনের। আমার কাছে এই বিপুলা পৃথিবীতে দুটি মানববসতি সত্যি অনন্য, অন্য সব দেশ-প্রদেশ থেকে বেশ তফাতে। প্রথমটি ভূমধ্য সাগর, দ্বিতীয়টি ক্যারিবীয় সাগর। গ্রীক-রোমানদের হাত ধরে প্রথমটি পাশ্চাত্য সভ্যতার আঁতুরঘর হিসেবে স্বীকৃত, আর দ্বিতীয়টি মূলধারার ইতিহাসের গোটা সময়টা জুড়েই ছিল অজানা। কলম্বাস অজ্ঞাতে সেই পর্দা সরিয়ে ফেললেন মাত্র ৫০০ বছর হলো। তবুও দুটির মধ্যে অদ্ভূত মিল খুঁজে পাই - বিভিন্ন জাতি ধর্ম বর্ণ ভাষার খিচুড়ি পাকিয়ে যে ভূমধ্য মনন বা ক্যারিবীয় স্বত্বার সৃষ্টি হয়েছে, তার জুড়ি অন্য কোথাও মেলা ভার। দুটি কালচারই অদ্বিতীয়, এক বিচারে সামগ্রিক এবং স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ।
ফ্লোরিডা থেকে ভেনেজুয়েলা পর্যন্ত ব্যাপৃত এই বিশাল পৃথিবীর বন্দনা যারা গেয়েছেন, তাদের মধ্যে গার্সিয়া মার্কেস, আলেহো কার্পেন্তিয়ের, এবং কবি ডেরেক ওয়ালকটের নাম অবশ্যই নিতে হয়। এদের লেখা যত পড়েছি তত ভালবেসেছি। গাবো আর ওয়ালকট বাদেও আরো কিছু ক্যারিবীয় সাহিত্যিক নোবেল পুরস্কার পেয়েছেন - যেমন নাইপল বা ফরাসী ভাষার কবি সাঁ জঁ পের্সে, কেউ কেউ বলেন যে মিসিসিপির বাউল উইলিয়াম ফকনারকেও এই হিসাব থেকে বাদ দেয়া যাবে না। এরা প্রায় সকলেই চোখ-ধাঁধানো নৈসর্গ্য আর জীবন-বৈচিত্র্যের মাঝে খুঁজে পেয়েছেন ইতিহাসের নিষ্ঠুরতা - সাম্রাজ্যের শোষণ আর লুন্ঠন, দাসপ্রথার অপ্রশমিত বেদনা, দস্যুতা আর লুটতরাজ আর অবারিত রক্তপাত।
ক্যারিবিয়ান অঞ্চলকে অন্তরের অন্তঃস্থল থেকে যারা উপলব্ধি করতে পেরেছিলেন, তাদের প্রথম সারিতে আরেকজন যিনি থাকবেন, তিনি কিউবার লেখক আন্তোনিও বেনিতেস-রোহো। ক্যারিবিয়ানকে তার জীবনের অন্যতম ব্রত হিসেবেই বেছে নিয়েছিলেন - তিনটি স্বতন্ত্র ফর্মে ধরতে চেয়েছিলেন এর প্রকৃত নির্যাস। একটি উপন্যাস সী অফ লেন্টিলস বা ডাল-সাগর, একটি বিখ্যাত সাহিত্য সমালোচনা দ্য রিপীটিং আইল্যান্ড, এবং বেশ কিছু ছোটগল্প যা ইংরেজিতে রূপান্তর করেছেন তারই সহকর্মী জেমস মারানিস।
কি দুর্ধর্ষ এই সংকলনটি। লেখকের নিজের ভাষ্যমতেই তিনি ক্যারিবিয়ানের বৈচিত্র্যকে চিত্রিত করার জন্যে বিভিন্ন স্বরে, বিভিন্ন গ্রামে ইতিহাসের পাতা থেকে অজানা অচেনা একেকটি এপিসোডের নাটকীয় রূপ দিয়েছেন। সংকলনের সবচেয়ে প্রিয় গল্পটি নিঃসন্দেহে "উইন্ডওয়ার্ড প্যাসেজ"। খচ্চরের পিঠে চেপে এক গঞ্জে এসেছে মদ্যপ পাদ্রী। স্থান কাল পাত্র কিছুই পরিষ্কার উল্লেখ নেই - কেবল বিভিন্ন রেফারেন্স (কোন অপেরার উদ্বোধন, কোন রাজার বদনাম) থেকে বুঝে নিতে হয় কি হচ্ছে। ভয়াবহ কৌতূহলের বশবর্তী হয়ে গুগল উদ্ঘাটন শুরু করলাম, তাতে বেরিয়ে এলো যে বর্তমানে হাইতি ও ডোমিনিকান রিপাবলিক সম্বলিত যে দ্বীপটি, অতীতে যার নাম ছিল হিস্পানিওলা, সেখান থেকেই এসেছে এই গল্প। ১৬০৫ সালের দিকে স্পেনের রাজা সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিলেন যে দ্বীপের পশ্চিম ভাগ সম্পূর্ণ বিরান করে দেবেন, কারন ওখানকার বেয়ারা জোতদার-জমিদার আর গোখামার মালিকরা শত্রুপক্ষ ডাচ ইংরেজ ফরাসিদের সঙ্গে অবৈধ বাণিজ্যিক সম্পর্কে লিপ্ত হয়েছিল। (পরবর্তীতে এই বিরান-করণের ফলেই দ্বীপের শূন্য পশ্চিমাংশ দখল করে ফরাসিরা পত্তন করে হাইতি নামক উপনিবেশটির।) সেই সময়ের গভর্নর ওসোরিও-র নামের সাথে মিলিয়ে হিস্পানিওলার ইতিহাসের এই অধ্যায়ের নাম দেয়া আছে the Devastations of Osorio। কি চমৎকার নাম! কিন্তু বাস্তবে চারশো বছর আগে রাজার আদেশ শুনে সেই জমিদারবর্গ আর তাদের অধীনস্থ গ্রামবাসীরা কি অনুভব করেছিলেন, কি ছিল তাদের ক্ষোভ বা শোক বা শকের মাত্রা? কি প্রতিক্রিয়া বা প্রতিরোধ ছিল তাদের? মদ্যপ পাদ্রীর অত্যন্ত মনোগ্রাহী মনোলোগের মাধ্যমেই সেই চিত্র অল্প অল্প করে গড়ে তুলেন লেখক।
একের পর এক এইরকম গল্প। কি চাই আপনার? জলদস্যু জন হকিন্স কর্তৃক রিওহাচা বন্দর ধ্বংসের ইতিহাস? নাকি গুয়াতেমালার অভ্যন্তরে সওদাগরী কাফেলার বিপদ-আপদ? পাদ্রী সাহাগুন কি করে ঔপনিবেশিক সময়ের অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মহাগ্রন্থ, আজটেক জাতির উপর ১২ খন্ডের বিশ্বকোষটি লিখেছিলেন? সবগুলো গল্প যে একই রকম ভালো লেগেছে বলবো না - শেষের দীর্ঘ রচনা "মারিনা ১৯৩৬" অপেক্ষাকৃত কম সফল লেগেছে। কিন্তু যেগুলো হিট সেগুলো একদম গ্যালারিতে ছক্কা। "ভেরাক্রুস" নামের অপূর্ব গল্পে ফরাসি জলদস্যু, মেক্সিকোর নতুন বড়লাট আর ভেরাক্রুস বন্দরের গোবেচারা সামরিক কমান্ডারের তিনটি ভিন্ন সুতো একত্রে মিশে তৈরী করেছে অসাধারণ কমেডি। "ল্য কাপে পূর্ণিমা রাত" আরেকটি চমৎকার হাইতি-ভিত্তিক গল্প। শিরোনাম-গল্প এবং "হেভেন এন্ড আর্থ" ফিরে এসেছে লেখকের আপন কিউবায় - কয়েক দশকের ব্যবধানে দুটি স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের বেনামী সিপাহীদের বিয়োগান্তক কাহিনী।
সুসাহিত্য পড়লে যেই অনুভূতি সদাজাগ্রত হয় - পারলে এক্ষুণি এর তর্জমা করে ফেলি, সকলের সাথে পাঠের নিপাট আনন্দ ভাগ করে নেই। কিন্তু বাস্তবতা যেহেতু তা হতে দেয় না, লেখক অনুবাদক প্রকাশকের প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা অন্তত জানিয়ে রাখা দরকার। ফেবার এন্ড ফেবারের এই ক্যারিবিয়ান সিরিজের অনেকগুলো বই-ই সংগ্রহ করেছি - ফরাসি স্প্যানিশ এমনকি ডাচ থেকেও অনূদিত - ধীরে ধীরে রসিয়ে পড়বো। দুই বছর আগে কার্পেন্তিয়েরের Explosion in a Cathedral আক্ষরিক অর্থেই মগজে যে বিস্ফোরণ ঘটিয়ে দিলো, তার অনুরণন এখনও প্রতিধ্বনিত হচ্ছে...

"This collection of stories draws on and reflects the historical complexity and ethnic and linguistic diversity of the Caribbean by moving through time, geography and a variety of narrative styles. The subject matter includes the travels of John Hopkins, the colonization of St. Kitts, the landscape of the Cordillera and the Spanish-American War amongst other themes." I have always been fascinated by the history of 'Latin America' but rather than history books I have learnt it from literature. I would never claim that literature is a substitute for history but there are times it will tell you more about history's 'reality' than any amount of facts. Even if you are going to rewrite history, as Carlos Fuentes does in 'Terra Nostra', what is rewritten can be as revelatory as what isn't.
I adored these stories by Benitez-Rojo (the name is hyphenated on my copy of this book but Goodreads doesn't hyphenate his name. I am sticking to the version of the name he put on his books)
and have read them at least twice. most recently during the lockdown. On the strength of them I have bought his novel 'Sea of Lentils' which is about as definitive an endorsement of an author asa I can give.
If you can search out this collection - I am sure you will enjoy it.

The stories in this collection are beautiful but brutal. However, from what I've learned of the islands' history here, that is extremely fitting.

A set of short stories, all about the Caribbean, told from diverse viewpoints...pirate, smuggler, slave, peasant, governor, etc. I will look for more work from this author and hope to find complete novels as good as this collection.
"But Puerto Plata was much closer to Santo Domingo than this godforsaken place, Puerto Plata almost bordered on the captain general and the Inquisition, and that's why it is no more; it almost bordered on the land of treasurers, inspectors, magistrates, constables, captains, mayors, planters, merchants, lenders, slave traders, notaries, and bishops and archbishops, priors and precentors, the creme de la creme of the very shit itself, the New World shit, colonial shit, the worst shit of all because it has no self-awareness, doesn't smell itself."

A collection of short stories by Antonio Benítez-Rojo, one of Cuba's most celebrated writers. The title story is set during the war for independence. The narrator is a Cuban soldier suffering from yellow fever, his mind traipsing from past (marching with his troop and executing Spanish soldiers) and present (he is left by the general in the care of an old man on an island) to hallucinations (he is in New York searching for his old girlfriend who works with the Cuban revolutionary junta). In the end, he is found dead eaten away by vultures.

A View from the Mangrove is an antidote for any lingering notions one may harbour of myths of noble European adventurers sailing into the horizon and a reminder of the tangled roots of their misadventures, treachery, brutality and exploitation that created our Caribbean world and a lot of its current problems. Benitez-Rojo though, also offers glimmers of hope, through faith (such as Voodoo) and of course resistance.
Film accompaniments: Salvador Carassco”s The Other Conquest (1998), Carlos Saura’s El Dorado (1988), Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), Irving Lerner’s The Royal Hunt of the Sun (1969) and Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto (2006) but only for the costumes.
