Aidan O'Conner (Human) and Leta (Dream-Hunter)

Aidan tried to be a nice person all his life. Now he hates everyone, because everyone has betrayed him. His brother and his nephew have taken advantage of him, his ex-girlfriend slept with his brother and then accused him for things he has not done, his best friend told all his secrets at the newspapers and magazines after Aidan confided in him.
And all the things these people said were distorted facts of his life and lies.

The only fact is that Aidan is very talented and extremely famous. He is more famous and sexier than Brand Pit. And when people don’t lust for him, usually they envy him.
Isolated in a cabin, he just wants to be left alone. What he doesn’t know is that things will get worst.

Aidan’s brother has made a deal with the worst demon out there. Dolor gives the worst pain to the cursed people and he is Leta’s worst enemy. Leta has to help Aidan and imprison Dolor again – otherwise Aidan and all humans will be in trouble.

Aidan is about to learn a few things like
-self-sacrifice and unconditional love
-true friendship
-there is a whole new (for him at least) world out there with Gods and Goddesses
-he can die in his dreams and he can battle in his dreams

I really enjoyed the book.
I guess it was originally published around Christmas’ time, because the whole story takes place during Christmas.
And in the end of the book, you can read snippets of our favorite Dark Hunters and Were Hunters’ Christmas day.

Another great addition to Dark-Hunter and Dream-Hunter series.

Despite the fact that Upon The Midnight Clear isn't a particularly outstanding book in the series, it still has its moments. I really enjoyed reading Aidan and Leta's story, and I loved Aidan's motto that he would be the last one standing and that he wouldn't let people who hurt him win.

Leta totally won me over. She has such a beautiful heart. She knew what Aidan had been through and she swore she would never ever betray him. She kept her word and never left his side even in the worst moments.

Love healed all their wounds and washed away all their pain.

----------------------------------------------

I found myself surprisingly pleased with the bonus Christmas story, Holiday Gatherings, at the end of this book. I was secretly rooting for Aimee and Fang to be able to have a future together. Can't wait to read their book.

Dolor, the god of Pain is summoned into the human realm by the selfish, cruel Donnie, who wants him to torture and kill his brother Aidan.

Dolor’s awakening triggers Leta’s waking too, a dream-hunter and Dolor’s greatest enemy. Leta is determined to save Aidan’s life and defeat Dolor.

Aidan is a very successful actor, now living as a recluse after his trust and generosity were badly abused by his family and fiancée.

The only character is finely worked out is Aidan. Too fine, actually. His characterization is tiringly long-winded and repetitive. The same facts are paraphrased over and over again. I liked him, but he is not in the same street with Kenyon’s other heroes.

Leta’s character seems interesting, but not delineated properly, let alone the secondary characters.

The plot is simple, the romance undeveloped, but overall it is not a bad story, and it has some great moments.
“And you’re going to save me.” He laughed again, then sobered. “Why would you do that?”
“It’s my job.”
“So you just randomly follow the god of pain around trying to protect his targets. What are you, the antipain fairy?”

Holiday Gatherings
5 stars

The bonus Christmas story at the end of the book is brilliant and hilarious! It makes me want to read the following books of the series right now!

“It’s all right, Urian. I have it.”
“You sure? It’s been a whole day since I last killed someone, and I’m getting antsy.”

Hoping for anything better only led to bitter disappointment. No, this was his life. He'd be alone until the day he died.

pity party photo: pity party pittyparty.gif

Aww, poor Adrian! He's only the biggest movie star on the planet who has millions of dollars so he can live the rest of his life without working ever again. Okay, I get that his family were a bunch of greedy a-holes who betrayed him for money and tried to kill him, but, hey, everyone has problems. I can't decide whether to eat another cookie before dinner, or if it will ruin my appetite. Life is just full of hardship, there's no need to whine about it.

first world problems photo: First World Problems RealWorldProblem_zps35d8e80d.png
Poor kid. Now, he deserves our sympathy...

So, Adrian's butthead of a brother, who is in jail for trying to murder him, has summoned an evil demon to kill Adrian once and for all. Luckily for Adrian, the goddess Leta is on the case. She will help him defeat the evil demon AND sleep with him. Things are looking up for our poor, sad, beautiful, successful man. He doesn't have to be poor and sad anymore! He could just go back to being beautiful and successful! Gosh, it's so great to see things working out for the incredibly good-looking! They have such tough lives.

This series has become so tedious to read. I'm just desperately trying to make it to Acheron's book. But there is no Acheron here, so it was such a waste of time. This story was made of all kinds of cheese and so predictable, I literally knew what was going to happen within the first couple of chapters.

I listened to the audio, and while the narrator was okay, he did overact a bit, to the point that everything Aiden said was overdramatic, and I think that helped add to the cheese.

To put it mildly, I was bored, bored, bored. I'm fairly certain that I'll be done with the Dark Hunter/Dream Hunter/Were Hunter/What's the point Hunter series after I read Acheron's book. I was a raging fangirl at the beginning of the series but they are all running together and so convoluted that I don't even understand what's happening any more.

Is it just me, or are Sherrilyn Kenyon books hit or miss? With more misses than hits I'm afraid.
And this one is a clear example of a miss.

Maybe I could've enjoyed it if I hadn't read so many other Dark-Hunter books. But after so many, I just can't help but notice that it's practically the same thing. Only a few things are changed. Like the names.

So no, this book didn't leave me with a good feeling. The only good feeling I had was that I managed to finish it.

I felt like there was something missing from this book. I liked it, but I think it could have been better. The storytelling seemed basic--not something I'm used to with Ms. Kenyon. I get that this was supposed to be short story, but it was a little too barebones for me. The characters (other than Aidan) just didn't seem to come to life for me, which is atypical for a Sherrilyn Kenyon story. My biggest issue is the short length. I think that keeping this short really restricted the complexity of this story, and it really did need more depth. I think this would have been a great novella, but it falls short of greatness as a novella, unfortunately.

What I liked:

*Aidan was a good hero. I could see why he was so bitter and sad. He'd been let down by people he was supposed to trust, people he'd do just about anything for. It was interesting that he was a movie star, what that entailed. I did appreciate how Ms. Kenyon wrote about the negative aspects of fame, although Aidan always had a good head on his shoulders. If he was a real guy, he'd be a movie star I'd respect as a person. I would love to see that movie Alabaster, that he was in. It sounds good.
*Leta was good too, although I thought that I could have used more elaboration about her backstory. It was a nice change for the heroine to be the one driven by vengeance.
*There was a good romance here, although I needed more depth to be great.
*It was good to see Deimos again. I liked him in The Dream Hunter. Hope he shows up again.
*I liked how we got to see various people who we've met in the Dark-Hunter world celebrate Christmas. It brought back some happy memories of reading their stories, and made me eager to read the following books in this series.
*I loved the fantastical elements, especially the worlds that Lyssa created. Very freaky and weird. Nice touch.

I think every author has a book that's not so great. Unfortunately, this is probably the one I'd name for Ms. Kenyon. I think she's a very talented author, and I enjoy reading her books. I just needed a richer longer book for this one to shine as brightly as it could have.

This felt more like a novella rather than a full Dark-Hunter book and I think both the romance and the story suffered a bit from having less time to grow. That said, this still had plenty of the usual elements (the humour, the romance, and the mythology) that make the Dark-Hunter series so fun to read. It was good, but not as good as usual.

The real plus was the Christmas theme. It was a lucky coincidence that this was my read for Christmas Eve since I had no idea this was going to be a very loose Scrooge retelling! That aspect of the story was actually quite fun.

Aidan O'Conner is a superstar movie actor who has retreated to live in isolation after being betrayed by everyone in his life from his brother and fiancée to his friends and publicist! He is full of anger and determined to be left alone. Unfortunately for him his evil brother has broken out of prison and summoned the long imprisoned god of pain to kill Aiden. Leta, the Oeneri who trapped Dolor the first time, has to protect Aiden. She has a tough job as he is determined to drive everyone away!

The story was OK but nothing special. The same goes for the romance. Aiden was a little whiny to begin with but got a lot more likeable as he was wooed by Leta.

The most exciting bit of the story was getting to learn more of the history of the Oeneri and getting to meet the likes of Zeus! We also ran across M'Adoc and Deimos. Deimos is growing on me. I hope he gets his own book!

Rating: 3 stars.

Audio Note: Fred Berman did a great job as always.

This was short. It would have been better but for 2 things. The hero was a whiney bitch for almost the entire book. It got old fast. Poor little rich boy, people were mean to him. I get they were really mean. But still. Get over it dude. Bad shit happens. People suck. But not ALL people. Whaa-whaa-whaa

Heroine was a bit of a sad sack but was a very sweet woman. She had loved her dead husband and child very much. I would have been ok with this. But when the hero stops mid sex to ask about how much she loved her dead husband. That was just too wierd for me. I could not get past that and almost DNF'd from the stupidity of it all. But I am a stuck I. The series so I persevered.

Hades proved yet again that he is a softie at heart, at least where Persophinie is concerned.

This book is just 282 pages of Aidan O'Connor whining and griping. If you want to read that many pages about a whiny-ass, weak-ass, pathetic excuse for a man - then more power to you. Have at it.

He flicked the lid off his beer and held it up to the photos of his 'family' that he kept on his mantel next to his five Oscars. "Fuck you all very much," he said snidely.

But in the end, he knew the truth. He was the only one who'd been royally screwed. He'd put his trust in all the wrong people and now he was left alone to deal with the devastation they'd foisted on him - because he'd dared to love them more than he'd loved himself.

Life was nothing if not pain and he was the king of it.

Two years ago, he'd lived and died for those assholes on the mantel. Had given freely to them, hand over fist, wanting them to have a better life than the hell he'd known growing up.

And even though he'd given all but his life to them, it hadn't been enough. They'd been deceitful and selfish. Unsatisfied with his extravagant gifts, they'd begun taking, and when he'd dared to question them about their theft, they'd gone after the only thing he'd had left.

His reputation and livelihood.

Yeah, people were sick and he was tired of the Judases all around him. His days of being used by others for what they could suck out of him were over.

Okay, now imagine reading whiny stuff like this for over 200 pages. This whining goes on and on and on and on.

I was like, "Shut the f*ck up, stop whining, stand up and start acting like a man! Yeah, life sucks. Big deal. Stop whining like a toddler and grow a ball or two!"

So unbelievably pathetic.

There's only one line I really liked:

He'd had enough knives planted in his spine to make a stegosaurus envious.

That was a great line! I loved it.

Kenyon tries to soften the sting of this terrible novel by giving us a little "Kenyon's world Christmas" story at the end. We are allowed to peek into all our favorite characters lives and see how they are spending Christmas. That was a nice gesture, but it doesn't make up for the time I spent reading this novel.

Aiden O Conner, became a famous actor, and is very talented, but was betrayed by everyone he knew, he has no friends and his brother is the worst. When his brother makes a deal with a god, to take him out, his life is in grave danger and there is only one person that can save him. Leta. Leta, knows the danger of her one enemy, and this enemy is after Aiden. A human man who has only known betrayal and injustice and pain. He doesn’t trust anyone, and lives like a “Scrooge” up in the mountains, away from civilization. Leta and Aiden become close despite how Aiden tries to keep pushing her away. This was such a fun short story, that added something different. What was most heartbreaking was Aiden and how he has been treated by everyone he knows, and his brother is just horrid. But Leta is such a wonderful heroine, kind and patient, she handles Aiden perfectly, and I love the way these two come together in the end and fight a god. Great courage and passion is written on each page, and this was a sexy and unique romantic interlude that is perfect for any time of year. It also reminds us the importance of loyalty to those we care about, and that jealousy can destroy us at times….it was an important reminder to me even, to keep close watch on my emotions and not let pride get in the way of the relationships I form. I adore how this author writes her stories, and I have found each story I read from her unique and teaches about human nature and makes us really think about what is really important in life.

I like the dream-hunters a lot, and even though I've read them out of order, I had no trouble following. I think of this as a long novella. It was a fairly short, really quick, action-packed read.
Leta, a dream goddess, is brought out of a healing 2000 year self-imposed stasis when the god of Pain is summoned from a curse she and Hades put on him last time he was out. He's the one who gave Zeus the nightmare that caused all the Oneri to have their emotions stripped. So she heads off to Earth to save his target, and she and he heal each other and fall in love in typical Sherrilyn Kenyon fashion :) with a fantastic HEA.
At the end are 3 or 4 mini updates on what everyone in NOLA is doing for Christmas. I think this book came out right before Acheron, so at the end we see Ash have a "feeling" when he's near Kat, but we don't know what it means...I'm assuming it has to do with Tori. We'll see.

Is it just me, or do Dream-hunters fail in comparison to Dark-Hunters?
I mean the story was so short. And mediocre at best.
The characters weren't flashed out enough for me to care about them. Not to mention that after heroes such as Wren, Valerius, or Zarek, Aiden just looked silly.
I know, I know, every pain is relevant, and shouldn't be brushed aside because someone has it even worse, but I think what made me react like this was the writing. SK didn't put enough effort into character development, as far as I'm concerned.

This was not one of my favs in the series, and yet it made me cry. Leta was amazing and she warmed my heart with her determation to save Aidan. I loved holiday gatherings stories in the back of the book. I sure hope that we will get a chance to read Aimee and Fang's story some day.

'Hmmm, feeling a bit ‘meh’ about this one. Riding the high of Devil May Cry, I dove straight in expecting good things and it all fell flat for me I’m afraid.

This book felt more like a glorified novella. It’s really short, and there’s not a lot of story to really get drawn into. And although we get a brief visit from some of the characters we’ve met in earlier books, it feels a bit isolated from the rest of the DH world – although I’ve been assured that these characters do appear later in the series, so I’m trusting that Kenyon will tie it all in nicely for me somewhere in the series (she hasn’t let me down yet!).

Our hero and heroine are both torn up over grief (her – very warranted) and betrayal (him –just downright whiny considering what other characters of the series have had to endure), but within hours of meeting each other they are healing each other and falling in love. While there were some swoony (and steamy) moments, it was essentially insta-love which, to me, felt more circumstantial than anything else.

The action was good – fighting in the dream world sounds brilliant! Although it appears that when fighting in the real world you can be all kickass-action-guy while at the same time talk over family history and dramas and have huge, big, life-altering epiphanies… yes, all while fighting. Weird.

After that it all collapsed into a big pile of ‘hooray for everything’ and I found it a bit too cheesy for my liking. I'm giving this 2 stars, riding on the back of the awesomeness of the rest of the series.

Overall, an unexpected blip on the otherwise fabulous road to Acheron, but I’m still excited to carry on.

EDIT - 19/08
I'm adding another half star to this because of the short at the end 'Holiday Gatherings' which lets us peek in at most of the main characters we have met in other books to see them all gathering together for Christmas. Love!

Many think that Upon The Midnight Clear was a disappointment for the simple fact that the book was "too short." However, knowing ahead of time that it is a specialty release, noted as being longer than a novella but shorter than a novel, while I admit the book was shorter than Sherri's standard, it was very good considering.

Unlike the previous Dream-Hunter novel, Upon The Midnight Clear went in the direction of having a female Dark-Hunter, Leta, and a human male, Aiden. Essentially being targetted by Dolor the god of Pain, Leta's job was to protect Aiden from the death warrent he had out on his head. The plot is in truth extremely simple, but both Aiden and Leta are lovable characters, and the pace of the story was very well established.

While not one of my high ranking favorites in the series, I without question enjoyed this book. An extra bonus was no doubt the added insight scenes of the Peliters, McTinery's, Hunter's, Styker and Nick, and Acheron and Simmi looksees into their Christmas of 2007. I truly loved the bonus scenes, most especially the last of Ash with Alexion, Danger, Simmi, Ximara, Styxx and Urian in Ash's heaven-home, and definatly the moment of Acheron, Sin, and Katra. The fact that Ash percieves a premonition possibly about his herion is so well written and a truly wonderful bonus to the story.

Another great book to the Hunterverse-series. In this book we meet Aidan O'Conner and he acts like the Scrooge. Aidan is tried of people walking all over him and taking advantage of him for his money. The money he worked so hard to get while becoming an amazing actor who is loved and adored by all. Not only has his friends betrayed him, his own brother tried to kill him for his money. Now, his brother is looking for revenge and believes Aidan doesn't deserve that money or the fame, he says it should be all his.

One day on a cold winters night Leta appears in Aidan's life and it all starts to go down hill for him. It has been a while and I do mean a while since Leta has been awake. She has no idea what the world is like in this day and age. Leta is awoken because someone decided to call upon the god of pain, Dolors, which was Aidan's brother. Leta doesn't care for Aidan she just wants Dolors dead and gone. So she pains on using Aidan's angry to fill her with power to do just that.

The main character Aidan, I really do feel bad for him. He went through all this trouble because he was rich and famous and his brother wasn't Aidan worked hard to get out of the horrible situation he was in. But his brother didn't care, he wanted everything. I see why Aidan became the Scrooge and decides to avoid everyone, because it is hard for him to trust now.

Leta, she is a strong-willed and powerful dream-hunter. She was put to sleep because of the major injures she got from the last time Dolors and her fought. At first I didn't like her because all she wanted was to use Aidan to get to Dolors and kill him. But then she started to fall for him, but she doesn't believe they were her emotions until her brother M'Adoc told her that the Dream-Hunters are slowly getting their emotions back. There is no stopping the connect they have for one another, it took a while for Aidan to trust Leta, but he finally lets her in she has to leave and he is devastated.

I loved the book, my favorite part was when Aidan's friends decided to come over for a Christmas dinner after all that has happen between him and Leta. I wanted to cry of happiness and sadness. For one he lost the one he loved and for two his friends from the studio came to celebrate Christmas with him. So like I said before another great book to the Hunter-verse series.

There was a time when Aidan had it all, both rich and talented he was an Oscar winning actor who was engaged to the woman of his dreams, but then he was betrayed by his family and closest friends and lost his faith in humanity. Now he lives in the middle of nowhere and keeps the whole world at a distance, the last thing he needs is for anyone to get close enough to betray him again and he has no intention of returning to the movie business no matter how much money they're offering him. His brother isn't content to let things lie though and he has one last plot up his sleeve, he has summoned a god of pain to destroy Aidan once and for all. Luckily for him the god of pain has an enemy and goddess Leta will do whatever it takes to protect Aidan and defeat her nemesis once and for all.

While I liked both of the main characters in this I have to admit I didn't enjoy it as much as I have previous Dark-Hunter novels, probably because it has no connection to any of the previous books we've read and both main characters are completely new to the series. It's mentioned that Leta is M'Adoc's sister and we do see him briefly but that wasn't enough to give me the Dark-Hunter fix I was looking for.

Aidan had suffered some terrible betrayals but I have to say I started to get a little fed up with his constant complaining, he was so determined to push everyone away that he came across as quite gruff and unfeeling and I started to get bored of his internal monologue. Leta was more interesting, I enjoyed finding out more about the Dream-Hunters and their curse and I did like seeing her bring Aidan out of his shell.

Overall I'd say this was an okay read, it had a bit of a Christmas feel to it with Aidan's Scrooge impression going on and a holiday celebration thrown in for good measure, it was also a very quick and easy read but it didn't grab my attention like the books in this series usually do and it wasn't as good as I expected. The romance did have quite a sweet ending and I wouldn't mind getting an update on the couple as the series continues, perhaps they'll have some important impact later on that I'm not currently aware of. I have admittedly high expectations for Sherrilyn Kenyon but I'm hoping the next book goes back to some of the main characters who I'm much more excited to read about.
