I’m the ruler of Hel as well as a demon-controlled section of North America. I'm also in charge of elven labor relations, and a bachelorette party.
The bachelorette party thing is kinda cool, but the bridesmaid dress I’m being forced to wear isn’t, and neither is the fact that Gabe is going to be the one walking me down the aisle. If we make it to the altar without either of us killing the other or being struck by divine lighting, it’ll be a damned miracle.
Worse, my adopted angel, Lux, has misunderstood his duties in the upcoming nuptials and this isn’t a problem I can brush under the rug.
Debra lives in a little house in the woods in Maryland with three sons, and a Noah’s ark of four legged family members. She has a corporate job during the day, and writes novels at night, after the kids are tucked in bed.
She drives an Excursion affectionately called The Beast, couldn’t carry a tune if you duct taped it to her back, and enjoys an occasional cosmopolitan (heavy on the vodka). On a good day, she jogs and horseback rides, hopefully managing to keep the horse between herself and the ground.
Her only known super power is ‘Identify Roadkill’.
The imp continues to be one of my top 3 favorite Urban Fantasy series with its irreverent antiheroine and her hilarious posse of misfits.
This time though, I think it’s safe to say that the youngest angel of Order stole some of her limelight along with uncle Samael as they struggle to fix the outcome of a much too literal interpretation of a sacred duty. Add a world caught in middle of confused and angry angels and demons gleefully taking over big chunks of America and Sam has got her hands - and backyard - full.
Still; there was time for romance, and WOW; some of it was NOT expected, but oh so adorable. I don’t know who was more delighted with a certain scene that featured Gregory and a stolen, little object, me or Sam. Can’t wait to see the culmination of that particular act;-)
My one complaint is that of a European, far removed (thankfully) from current American politics. Readers of the imp will know that a certain failed casino owner turned WH resident has been hilariously, yet accurately featured in this series since long before he became the actual president across the pond, or even ran for office. The (unnamed but clearly recognizable) president we saw in this book did not fit well with the man we’ve laughed at in the Imp series since 2013 and his shockingly respectful portrayal this time around felt... off. I understand; ruffled republican feathers and all that, but the DJT in Imp 11 felt like a normal human being, and well... Let’s just let that implication hang in the air...
~I was given an eArc in exchange for an honest review~
With This Ring is book 11 in the Imp series. I am so happy to say that this isn’t the end of Sam’s story. I thought this series was over with book 10 and then book 11 popped up as a surprise but I waited a while to listen to it because I am not ready for the story to be over or to say goodbye to the characters. Thankfully, the storyline in this book did not wrap up and there is more to come. The author even did a note at the end confirming there is another book coming. So now I patiently, okay slightly impatiently, wait.
I finished With This Ring a few weeks ago and didn’t get a chance to review it right away so it is no longer fresh enough in my mind to leave a detailed review. I can say that I absolutely loved this book. It is a little like returning home to a family I like whenever I read these books. There were several laugh out loud moments and lots of good action too. Lux really stirred up some trouble and it was quite a feat for Sam and Gregory to clean up the mess.
The narration was good. The narrator doesn’t have a wide range of voices but she does a good job reading the story and making it come alive despite that.
I recommend this book and this series. This is a series in which you need to start at the beginning and read each in order. I am looking forward to when I go back and start the series all over again.
All Sam wants is to enjoy time with her child and sexy Angel, but instead the responsibilities keep piling up, much like the zombies outside her door.
I'm beginning to feel sorry for Sam. She has so many duties that she no longer has time to be the Imp she was. The situation keeps escalating and you can't help but wonder how much worse it can get.
I did feel that the story was a bit rushed. So much was happening that some things were dealt with in a very shallow manner. There were several story lines that would have been interesting to follow on their own, but as a part of the whole, they got lost.
I'm actually quite worried now for Sam and the world she is trying to create. I even feel sorry for Satan! Hopefully things will be resolved in the next book. Can't wait!
Sam never fails to delight. Despite being a demon imp and the Iblis, she manages to do the right thing, cursing up a storm as she does so. The bachelorette party she organizes is a thing of beauty and will become a legend. The usual crew of characters round out the tale. We learn more about the value of dwarves. Thank you Debra Dunbar for another epic ride. Highly recommended.
Let me start with saying: I loved imp series! 1-10 book - perfect gold! This one? No, just no. Sam is the Iblis and yet she holds no power even after last fight in book 10 where she fully became Iblis and could order every demon to return to Hell. I expected this book to be full of moments where Sam just like waves her hand and stuff happens and she acknowledges that with the new power everything is easier and she can have more time with Lux, Gregory and Samael - as her sensei or something. But NOOOOO. She was portreyed even weaker than in book 1. SPOILER ALERT! ............ Humans have got their hands on powerful weapons against demons and angels, but this fact was somehow downplayed. I mean if the hole race can be easily killed with some paintball guns then it needs to be acknoledged that as a leader of Hell Sam should have shut down completely weapon manufacturing and keep this war between angels and not let humans to get involved in a big war which I think was gonna happen in the next book. And the ending...terrible. New villain just hops out of nowhere and declares that THEY ARE COMING TO THIS WORLD because their band have been lifted.... Yes you need a bone structure for the next book but I get the feeleng that this book was so full of unsolved cases just because author needs to write more books. ................. I would not recommend this book. However because of boredom you can read this book just do not expect a good plot or good interactions between your favourite characters. ........... And now a few times a smiled reading this book: “I can heal,” Lux offered. “No, he can’t,” I lied. I wasn’t letting Lux anywhere near that hag’s moldy beaver.” “I can,” he insisted. “Heal hag. Swap rings every year.” The woman hesitated. My hands slipped again, leaving me clinging to the very end of the branch. ---- Before I could protest, Lux danced over and punched her in the crotch. “Heal!” The hag staggered backward, falling to the ground with her feet in the air.
.... “Strippers!” One of Amber’s friends screamed. “They’ll be here soon,” I promised. Then I pivoted so she couldn’t see my smile turn to a grimace. I’d ordered the party favors. I’d gotten Amber a gift I knew she’d love—an all-expenses paid trip for her and Irix to one of the premier sex clubs in Europe. I’d booked this place, threw my credit card on the table and refused to accept donations from the others to help defray the cost. But the strippers… None of the delivery guys I’d accosted had been interested. The professional organizations I’d contacted had been booked up through the summer. I’d begged vampires, werewolves, the homeless people camped out at my condemned properties at the end of the canal walk. Finally, out of desperation, I’d asked the one group I knew would enthusiastically be on board with this project, and who would be available. The doors of Billy Wampus flung open. “We’re here!” I lifted a finger in the air and the jukebox began playing Rhinestone Cowboy as half a dozen Lows swaggered into the bar, wearing only chaps, cowboy hats, and a smile. I clapped my hands. I was the only one. The Lows had clearly spent a lot of time and effort choreographing their routine in the thirty minutes between when I’d told them about this gig and their arrival. Their moves were completely synchronized, even though quite a few of them hadn’t mastered the art of creating a convincing human form. Pick sauntered up to a redhead, hopping on his bow legs so that his long thorny member bounced in her face. The woman recoiled, her spine hitting the back of the chair with an audible whack. “Uh, Sam?” Nyalla sidled up to me, patting Rutter on the head as he shook his hips at her. I waved a hand at her. “Shhh. They’re going to do splits for the finale. Do you know how diffcult it is for Lows to achieve that level of flexibility? Quite the thing to watch.”
.... “What the fuck is going on?” Samael shouted as he pushed the door closed. “Did you try to resurrect Elvis and it backfired? Why is there an army of undead trying to storm the church?”
.... “How about you owe me a favor?” Samael interrupted. “After all, I helped fight these corpses. I put that damned ring back on. I wasn’t even invited to this wedding, but here I am, helping.” I laughed. “Fine. What exactly do you want? You’re already the Maid of Honor for my wedding. I’m even getting you a wrist corsage like you wanted.” “I get to give the speech at your wedding reception.” I glanced over at Gregory and bit back a smile at his horrified expression. “Done. And Samael?” I waited for his eyes to meet mine. “You need to be in this form for my wedding, not Gimlet. And commando. There better not be any underwear on under that satin dress.” He grinned. “You can count on it.”
......... In conclusion - I am disappointed, so f**** disappointed that I am not gonna even re-read this review and correct grammar mistakes...
Still love the characters but I didn’t care for the plot on making them powerless
I am sorry, but while I still love the characters. I didn’t care for certain key elements of the plot.
Wedding stuff was fun, bachelor party and even the ring stuff was fun.
It did take a while for our favorite Imp to start causing chaos to save the day, but because of the below items I feel she is now completely powerless along with all supernaturals being powerless as well.
Spoilers:
However the things I didn’t care for at all:
The entire blue paint ball weapons- were way overpowered and way too easy to make.
Not just the paintballs, but the ease in which all these new artifacts the wall; amulets and everything was being mass produced.
Basically you have beings that can survive anything and alter the very fabric of the universe and they can easily be killed by paintballs.
This makes all future enemies worthless and all the angels and Demons powerless.
The way the world handle the political enslavement or the various stupid policies that are going to cause major issues down the road for everyone- our fun imp didn’t even try to stop and no one seemed concerned about.
Lastly the twist at the end about a potential new enemy- just shoot it with a paintball problem solved.
This is a major letdown. The book? Hardly. The letdown is that it has been out so long and I am just now reading it. Somehow it got lost in my shuffle. Argh. No, onward...
First, I had barely started before I realized how long it's been between books from this author. Second, at about the same time I remembered how much I have missed Sam! Ack!
You would think this would be simple and maybe not too interesting, right? Wrong. I mean, sure, weddings are a bit complicated but they're routine. Right? Maybe if the Iblis isn't involved but she is so there you go. As usual, I'm not going to spoil the book by telling you about it but there's zombie stuff, baby Angels stealing rings, a whole raft of ongoing "issues" just to add to the confusion, and there's Sam. Sam, who never met a situation she couldn't complicate at that is still true. But relax, in the end... nah, I won't tell you about the wedding or whether it happens. I will just say this - if you like this series, you will like book 11. Me, I would like more than 6 stars because any Debra Dunbar book is a top shelf book, just like this one.
In closing, if you haven't read books 1 - 10, you will like 11 more if you start at the beginning. You'll be glad you did!!
I didn't think I'd enjoy another Imp book, mostly because it seemed there wasn't much more to say. But, boy was I wrong! I loved this! Sam is back as her usual nutso self, Gregory seems to be catching a bit of that nutso, and Lux, well, Lux brings his own form of adorableness to the mix that just can't be missed. I love that little booger who gets everyone in trouble while trying so hard to be good!
Yes, this time it's Lux getting Sam into trouble, and how and why are hysterical. Something only a baby Angel of Order could possibly do. Particularly one being raised by and THE Archangel, who prefers the name Gregory these days but started out as Michael, and The Angel of Chaos, The Iblis herself, Sam the Imp. I mean, want to confuse a kid? That'll do it!
I love this series. Totally love it. I have since the beginning even before it got really funny, and since it ain't over yet, I'll continue to love it. If you've never read it, you're missing out. Seriously missing out.
This is my 12th book I have read in this series, but only the 4th time I have read the physical book instead of listened to the audiobook. At least twice the editor missed an incorrect use of "it's," so now I wonder if there have been lots of other typos I was unaware of. There was also a missing "d" at one point.
This book actually didn't go the way I expected it to. The series ostensibly ended last book, and I figured that this would be a fluffy epilogue capturing the happy occasion of Amber's wedding. I thought we would check in with each of the side characters and hear that they are all sappy, making babies, living happily ever after.
Instead, Amber had a grand total of about 3 lines in this book. Her fiance Irix had none at all. And other than Wyatt making a surprise re-appearance, I can't say that we seriously checked in with every side character.
This was actually a typical Imp book, focusing on Sam and her antics. There were Ruling Council meetings. There was a moral decision to make, and Sam the ex-demon wanted to take the easy way out, but didn't. She was way too casual about meeting with the president (heavily implied to be Trump). She made massive international deals off the cuff, with no thoughts to the repercussions. She spent the majority of the novel carving her way through zombies, but she prioritized family time with her angel mate Gregory and their angel kid.
There was drama and some suspense. There may have been attempts at humor, but those usually rub me the wrong way. Although, even I smile at the thought of the Lows putting together a synchronized dance routine.
There will be a sequel in 2021, so I guess the conclusion in book 10 was a fake out?
To this day I still don't understand what exactly an Imp is in this universe. Originally, Sam admits she is just a step above a Low. Imp behavior is referenced often, and it always seems to be short for "impulsive." But characters act like they can tell Sam is an imp just by looking at her, even though she never describes any physical features that are specific to imps. Weirdly, characters look at her and say, "You're an imp!" even after she has developed angel wings. These should clearly mark her as an angel, but for some reason ancient demons think of her as a winged imp. Which doesn't even exist in this world.
There are greed demons and war-maker demons. Succubi who specialize in lust. Lows who are little more than animals. But there is never an explanation for what it actually means to be an imp.
Speaking of world building, I was pleased to learn some more about dwarves in this book. Dunbar has been light on detail about species other than angels or demons. I am still curious about why Sam was so excited 6 books back to hear about a demon-goblin hybrid. There has been no goblin character since that oblique reference.
However, there is a stereotypical "hag" of a witch in this book, and no explanation is ever given for who the Hell she is, where she lives, what her species is, how she has magic, or how common hags are. We have encountered young Wiccans before, and elf-trained sorcerers, but never a hag like this. Her power seemed way stronger than that from any witch Amber encountered in New Orleans, but no explanation is given as to why.
This series has always been one of my favourite UF's out there, mainly in account of how Sam is just the most hilarious narrator and I love her antics. But something felt a bit off for me with this one.
I thought book 10 was the final book and it felt like a decent ending, so this felt strange. It was great seeing Sam deal with Lux, and I enjoyed the small amount of page time with Gregory, but I didn't really enjoy the plot.
I think the biggest issue was that the author referenced some figures and situations in global politics that I tend to read to forget about. Reading is my escape from how shitty many aspects of the world is, and having people like Trump in it (albeit briefly and not named) and references to Brexit made me grimace a bit. Plus I didn't like this whole idea of humans having magical super weapons that could take down Demon's and arch angels. It felt a bit incongruous.
So, whuoenibdid enjoy seeing the characters again, I'm not sure I'm massively interested in where the plot is going.
I have to say, this was amazing! I really loved seeing Sam, Lux, and Gregory all together. It was super cute. It was also fun to see the various threads, such as the demons' new territory, from the previous book in the series, being continued and causing trouble as usual. Also, I look forward to book 12 in the series from that epilogue. The trouble never stops, does it? I guess I'll have to wait and see in 2021. 5 stars! Really funny, exciting, and cute installment in the series. I'm very glad that there was a followup.
The book seems as if it's going to be about Sam's bridesmaid woes, but that's a red herring. The real trouble starts when baby-angel Lux is appointed the ring bearer, and takes his job too seriously. Most of the rings he steals (from all over) are merely valuable, but some are...special.
This book got off to a slow start, and I didn't enjoy the first half of the book. After that it picked up steam, and ended well.
3.5 to 3.75 stars, This one was okay but I do very much like the series and character in this series. I love the main character but I found the main story was not push forward as much as I would have liked but all in all I still liked it.
I got an advance copy from the author. This book is great. Lux is growing and learning, Sam is learning that motherhood is wonderful even in the moments that aren't so great. All the zombies is quite interesting. Love how Sameul saved the bachelorette party. Over all. I love this book.
I absolutely love Sam and I am so happy we get more of her. She's the ultimate angel of chaos and she brings so much joy to us readers! She always takes us on one hell of an adventure!
In this story Sam has got her hands full - more than usual. There are so many different troublesome events going on that she has no idea where to start. Nothing ever seems to go right for her but then again she is Satan. As always she keeps us laughing with her antics, her wit and they way so goes about doing things.
I laughed pretty hard with this book. It was an hilarious adventure with Sam and there was no end to the chaos or mayhem. Loved it!!
Oh boy am I glad she didn’t stop at book 10!!! Sam and the gang are back with a fresh set of horribly hilarious adventures.
Amber and Irix are getting married and adorably mischievous Lux takes his “Keeper of the Rings” duty seriously. On top of that psychotic elves are trying to take over the world, not so holy angels are sick of the bullshit, walking dead extras are ruining sun bathing, and humans are doing what they do best, making weapons to combat anything different.
You have no idea the excitement I felt when I realized book 10 wasn’t the end. This creative and hilarious world has entertained me for quite some time now and this one definitely lives up to the standards set by its predecessors. It’s nice to see Sam grow up in her own way with her responsibilities as Iblis that she now takes seriously(resentfully but seriously) and motherhood which actually suits her character quite well.
There were some pretty heartwarming moments on top of some laugh out loud ones and I’m glad to see Samael is remaining in the series because his dynamic with Sam cracks me up. And as always Gregory and Sams utter devotion to each other is so satisfying and isn’t overdone to the point where their relationship is boring like so many other novels when the main character finds their meant to be.
The ending was exciting and the epilogue has me so excited for the next book!! Debra Dunbar has done it again!! Not like I’m surprised....
I absolutely love Sam. She is barely hanging in there on this one. There is one crisis after another. She's trying to arrange a bachelorette party, keep the peace between the different factions, fight out why zombie animals are attacking her house, and and return a ton of stolen rings. As always, nothing goes right for her. You have to read this, you will laugh your butt off.
I have read all the books written for this world and I think the imp series is the best. This edition has a couple of typos and missing punctuation spots, but the story is excellent- couldn't put it down and finished it in one sitting. However, I wouldn't recommend as a standalone, there's just too much that happens in the other books.
2 1/2 stars There were some fun parts of this book but it didn't make up for the lack of cohesiveness and then the cliffhanger story continuation ploy we were left with.
So if I had to pick out a main plot it would be the rings plot. Only problem is that only the zombies were eventually intertwined with that. We had to sit through the politics, the weapons, the dead angels, all to get through what could have been a novella. It would have been a pretty good novella and might have got 4 stars as a novella from me but 2/3rds of the book remained with the other plots and ended on a cliffhanger. A bunch of the other plots dragged, didn't go anywhere, or was just build up to the eventual continuation on the series. The main plot almost seemed like a side plot and actually was to an extent other than the name of the book points to it as main.
So since the rest of the book seemed to meander to get to a point that wasn't fully realized and then dropped as a cliffhanger, I really was disappointed. Hopefully the next book answers all the cliffhangers and this does not become a serial series or I won't be pre-ordering books anymore. I don't continue serials unless they are completely finished and even then they have to be favorites... so maybe when it is complete or I hear that the next book is a wrap up to most things. This was a whopping disappointment.
First review-- I had to come back to clarify since it is a favorite series. I hate cliffhangers like this. Two thirds the book was about the dead angels and the spells that took powers and neither is answered. One is almost not started. This really had no cohesion because off the multiple storylines, which a couple are left in cliffhangers. I am disappointed as the Imp Series was one of my favorites. This even had pretty boring parts that were build is that then went no where. So another surgery jumps on the cliffhanger band wagon
With This Ring (Imp Series Book 11) is an urban fantasy book from a series which I highly recommend.
Angel Of Chaos Sam is the leader of Hel; smart mouthed, fierce, and a rule breaker, she tends to bound from one bad moment to another. She’s come along way from a mere Imp hiding in the human world. She is the Iblis, but with the title comes responsibility. Recently she mistakenly banished the Angels from their home world and earth is now crowded with demons, elves and homeless angels. Tensions are high and the humans are preparing to protect their world.
Meanwhile Sam is to be a bridesmaid and her adopted baby Angel Lux will be the ring bearer. Sam’s lists of responsibilities is getting longer, not helped by semi-dead creatures arriving on her doorstep which she constantly has to attend to.
When book eleven of a series can still make me laugh out loud this is a very good sign. I love all the rule breaking; Sam’s parenting antics were particularly fun. The dialogue, story themes and fast pace make this a very enjoyable story.
My only wish would be a short reminder in the beginning of who the main characters are and a quick recap of the story so far, as it has been a good couple of years since I read the last book, and I was on catch-up for a while. Looking forward to book twelve.
Sam, the Iblis, just can’t get away from dead rats, other dead animals and zombies. Lux her little baby angel, went on a stealing spree, stealing rings, from people and places, all over the world. Sadly one was cursed and the majority of this story is about Sam trying to kill, get rid of or cut to pieces attacking dead things. At times the story, to me, seemed to bog down and became redundant, with the constant insane, no answers on how to stop them and the never ending attacking by the dead. But, Sam was at her hilarious best, when it came to setting up a bachelorette party, for Amber. Even I blushed, at some of her outrageous party favor (sex) toys. The party was a complete success!! The wedding between Irix and Amber, was rudely interrupted by zombies, but, the vows were said and Lux did an amazing job of being the ring barer. Lots of trouble in the human world, as companies are making weapons to possibly kill angels and demons. Sam and Archangel Michael are trying to sort it out. Sam was injured by one such weapon and only help from an old friend, a dwarf, finally got the Iblis’s powers back. The surprise in the whole story was, ….., oh no, I guess you’ll have to read that, yourself. Another wedding is coming, at least I sure hope so! So, excited to know, book 12 of the series, will be out sometime in 2021. Kathy Barber Doyle 6/21/2021
At first, I thought that this would be a novella since there was a not in the last book that it was the end of Sam's story, but it turns out that there will be more on the way. I am hoping that I can read the other women's stories. This one comes after Amber's story. Its Amber's wedding but Sam's perspective. Lots of laughs to have. These women are so awesome and the men in their lives are so perfect for them.
I love the bad girl Sam and how she really tries to give a crap about things! It’s too funny. Her sense of humor is very dark but so entertaining. The book was a little slow and for waiting as long as I did for the next one to come out, it really didn’t deliver a lot. I will read the next one though because I love Sam.
I am so happy Sam is back!!!! I'm pretty sure this is one of my favorite series and Sam is definitely my FAVORITE character! The right amount of naughty with a deeply buried good heart! This book deals with what would happen if we suddenly had angels, demons, and elves among us....but with the twist that most of them don't want to be here!
Laugh out loud funny story. Sam is the bridesmaid from hel literally but she does throw an amazing bachelorette party. Lux causes his usual drama complete with lots and lots of zombies. Samel comes through as his Gimlet the Low and again as the entertainment at Ambers party and wedding attendee. I can’t wait to see Sam’s wedding to Gregory.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
How can an imp have a good time these days? Especially when the dead keep crashing your pad. Sam's days are full of council responsibilities, but she just wants to have fun while planning a bachelorette' party of epic proportions, well the wedding will be epic alright, full of zombies!
